A new volume in ACC Art Books' London series, focusing on the capital's vibrant LGBTQ+ scene. Queer London is a timely and accessible introduction to the city through a LGBTQ+ lens, and will appeal to anyone with an interest in London's thriving queer landscape. Celebrating the diversity and innovation of queer individuals in London, both historically and today, Queer London features a range of bars, clubs, shops, Pride events, charities, community organisations, saunas and sex shops that cater to the LGBTQ community. Along with highlighted features on influential queer Londoners of the moment, this book delves into the cultural history of queerness in the capital, including events, organizations or venues that have sometimes been forgotten or overlooked, but which were of key importance to the community. From the long, illustrious queer history of Soho and the legendary drag balls at Porchester Hall, to the hottest clubs of the moment, Queer London is the go-to guide for anyone looking to engage with rich queer legacy of this nation's capital.
Picked mine up today from Gay’s The Word and honestly what a treat. It’s so much more than just a listings of queer spaces - it’s a past, present and future look at the all things queer in the capital.
The personal anecdotes for each section and description give it a real sense of familiarity and you can really feel those spaces - old and new.
The images are glorious and really capture the warmth of the queer life in london.
I’ve lived in London for 11 years and still haven’t been to all the venues so once lockdown lifts I’m going to work my way through.
A must for all coffee tables and an excellent gift as well.
This is a useful guide to the queer scene in London, set out in an easy to read way
I read this cover to cover for the first time, something that you don't have to do, but I found some really amazing clubs that I want to check out with friends
Me and my friends aren't big drinkers, and a lot of the queer scene evolves around alcohol, I love that there were bars etc that have sober nights included in this. We found a couple that sound exactly like our kind of thing and we will check them out
This is a handy resource for the queer side of London, including some of the history and bars that are no longer open. It's so important to know our history and the often hidden history of LGBTQ+ London
What a great book - an interesting collection of bars, clubs, night life, and also charities and health resources. Part guide, part history snap shot, this is such a helpful resource, interspersed with pages focussing on people and organisations important to LGBTQ+ history. It's refreshingly inclusive and intersectional.
A wonderfully insightful look at the history of and guide to London’s LGBT+ culture. This is essential reading for those who want to know where we come from, where we are, and where we need to go. Alim’s writing is engaging, funny and can transport into the venues, events and locations he talks about.
