"This is a warm, funny, educational, and very human story... a reminder that we are all just humans trying to be our best. And that, like this book, is a precious thing." Colin Mochrie, Actor/Comedian/Producer, "Whose Line Is It Anyway" Finally, I was revealing my true self to the world; someone I had recognized since the age of four. I confidently declared, "I'm a transgender woman-but a woman just the same." In nearly an instant I had conquered my lifelong insecurities, fears, and demons by facing them with unapologetic authenticity. I was confidently staring down a societal construct that immersed itself in long-held sexual and gender-related mythology and ignorance. Had I finally overcome the mortal heartache of being a person who to me was anything but natural? Or was I about to be sideswiped by more adversity than I could have ever possibly imagined? This must-read book will help extricate you from your irrational fears and help you uncover the courage and confidence hidden within you to become your best version-unapologetically you. It will help you discover a new understanding of the world, and yourself, all through the lens of one woman's rebirth into the person she was always meant to be.
What a wonderfully written book by a woman that has had a remarkable life filled with adversity and wonder all at once.
Throughout the book, it felt as though I was having a personal conversation with a friend that I've known for years! Hiding From Myself is refreshingly easy to read, while providing me with incredible insight into what she had to process and overcome along her journey to becoming the wonderful person and beautiful woman she is today.
I loved this book. It made me cry in places as it was so raw and honest. I am now really appreciative on what it is like to live a life as a woman and not to take it for granted as there are many women like Amber who have to fight everyday to be recongized as female. Her story is a tribute to all transgender women and how brave they are when standing up, shouting loud, proud and beautiful.
Reading Amber's story felt like she was personally sharing it with me. I really appreciate her honesty, persistence and tenacity as she pushed toward achieving her goals. I've had my share of life challenges and can relate to Amber's journey through "doing the best that you can with the information you have at the time". I am happy for her.
Well, I started reading it and couldn’t put it down. I connected with Amber on so many levels. She brings out a truth that many of us spend so much of our lives trying unsuccessfully to hide. But her words flow with beauty that unapologetically says this is me, accept me or not! Just reading her life story gives me strength to face my truth. Ambers story has stirring echoes of my past and all that has shaped and changed my life. I hope all who have the pleasure of reading this story find as much candor as I did and whether gender dysphoric or not allow it to lift them to a higher understanding. Your journey is told with a sense poise and humor that makes it easy to feel connected to you. Thank you for putting yourself out there, to be a light in the dark. Samantha
An Interesting, Informative, and Entertaining Marvelous Read
This unique and remarkable memoir on the diverse human condition left me emotionally invested from page one.
By sharing some of the most intimate and vulnerable aspects of her life and self-discovery, Amber illuminates and educates on a subject to which many of us still have little understanding.
I am so impressed by Amber's resilience, courage, and determination throughout her life. The support and encouragement received from this wonderful woman's family and friends can teach us all something about unconditional love. The priceless way she deals with adversity during her transition left me in stitches. Good for you girl!
I highly recommend this entertaining and well-written book to everyone that wants a better understanding of what it means to be transgender.
An amazing memoir highlighting the trials of transgender individuals.
A highly insightful story about the harsh trials Amber and other transgender individuals face in trying to live a normal life. Her book brilliantly explores how the simplest and underrated daily happenings can be a tremendous daily struggle when you realize things are not as they should be. The issues covered are impressively articulated and make you feel as though you are right there as things unfold.
This book is definitely a must read! Not only does she highlights the issues many transgender individuals face, but how human nature molds the very fabric of our lives and how we interact with each other.
Two great authors, A. R. Washington and Shakespear
Do you know what to be transgender is like? Society has many false ideas and misconceptions about transgender people. Amber's story let's you see the good and the bad.
I am also reminded of Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, in which the advice, "To thine own self be true." is given. Here, in this book, it takes the author over forty years to realize and achieve this.
Why do we try so hard to be who we are not to fit in? This book shares the journey of a beautiful person’s discovery in becoming the best version of her “unapologetic” self. A true story that will inspire those struggling with a society that is rigid and unempathetic to be their true self. It has humor, heartache, hope, and most of all truth.
I really appreciated how vulnerable and open Amber is in her sharing her story of incongruence. If you've ever felt like an "other" then you will be able to relate to this book and the author's story. It also provided great insight into the lived experience of a trans woman on her journey to womanhood.
