Dirk's epic run of success in King's League has drawn new gamers to Dawnshire, but not all of them are there to play nice. Rumors about mysterious Graydon's Armor pieces are quietly spreading across the Realms. It isn't long before someone attempts to take away everything Dirk possess as powerful forces conspire against King's League's newest player sensation.
The game quickly turn personal as hidden threats work to make Dirk's life miserable in and out of the game. Dirk follows the clues to King's League's cyberpunk expansion realm, 86-Neon. Fighting for survival in a world of flying cars, powerful weapons, and ruthless crime, Dirk must learn to rely on more than just himself if he hopes to survive this thrillingly hilarious second installment of King's League!
King's league was a mixed bag of some good and some frustrating, but this sequel seems to have doubled down on the frustrating and thus averages out to utterly mediocre.
I find it very hard to care about the situations involved when it becomes obvious that things will always work out for the MC just fine and nothing is ever going to seriously threaten him. I felt the same way in book 1 when he sort of stumbled into maxing his character, but I hoped things might improve in book two. Yet now he still has that max level character and I get the impression he's never going to lose it.
What's the point of setting a story in a world where you can die and have to start over at the beginning, if it never actually happens? Then the 'potential death' stakes become as meaningless as in a standard adventure novel when it becomes obvious the favored character is going to be fine for 20 more books.
Long story short, I was on the fence after book one, and book two pushed me off. I'm done with this series.
I struggled a bit with the first book. There were some glaring plot holes that were tough to get through. But it was decent and I made it. I was actually pretty excited about this new book, the work concept is very cool. I love cyberpunk. But I couldn’t get past the first bit. Some of the glaring game mechanics issues came back with a vengeance. And then he has a conversation with another high level player and that was the straw for me. It was struck me as two teenagers having a fight, just nonsense really.
So King's League is a great LITRPG title with a fun main character. Its based around a Fantasy game but its big enough that it has "Upgrades or Skins" and one of them is 86 Neon which happens to be the title of the second book in the series. 86 Neon is Tech-Punk the weapons change from Fantasy / Medieval to all out SciFi. This was a very fun read and one that shows how much the author can change something and still keep everyone happy. I am looking forward to the rest of the series and the great action
Book two of the King's League series is just as exciting as the first book, and should definitely be read after the first book. The action is non-stop, the characters are very engaging, and there is a lot of friendship and loyalty to each other among the primary "good-guy" characters. The premise is extremely interesting, in that the action takes place in an asynchronous multiplayer virtual reality game, i.e. an MMORPG.
Good, fun, straightforward sequel to King's League. The structure is a bit off from what I expected, as Dirk doesn't even enter the cyberpunk world of 86-Neon until more than halfway through, and then the story just sort of books it to the ending. Still enjoyable, though not as much of a page turner as the first book. Still planning to continue the series, since this sets up book 3 pretty well to explore some supporting characters that I liked.
Book 2 was just as enjoyable as the first. The real world aspect of it was believable, even if the bad guy wasn't really. I still enjoyed this part of the story a lot. Don't really understand why anyone would actually play in a world like 86-Neon though. We play to escape our misery, not endure more of it.
I thought the first book was fast paced and engaging. This one has a nice through line of the main character going after his next nemesis. No setbacks in this story line, and some setup for the -ups.
King's League was my first experience in litRPG. I had no idea what to expect but came away eagerly anticipating the next installment. 86Neon did not disappoint. I can't wait for the next one!
Dirk lives again as the 2nd book brings him into a cyberpunk world where we meet some new characters that are quite interesting. Some threats in the real world make for a good change of pace as well and a great aet up for the 3rd book.
This book gives a fresh perspective to the game we read about in the first book by taking us into a high tech futuristic expansion. The story is just as thrilling, and the stakes are even higher in this one.
A great read full of adventure, with light town building and heavy fighting, magic, guns, explosions and the odd PvP thrown in. The story clips along and is well written and brings the now content to life.
Thoroughly enjoyable and look forward to the next one.
What happens when RPG players get so serious about the game that they start tracking down other players to ruin their lives for real. This is one version of what can happen. Good read. Enjoyed reading even through I'm not into RPG myself.
