Robert de Keith was captured by the English eight years ago and has since been forgotten in a cold dungeon. Now he’s finally been released and can’t wait to return home to Dunnottar Castle and his beloved wife, Elizabeth. She has done an excellent job acting as laird in his stead, but now Robert feels like an imposter in his old home and his wife is distant and treats him as a stranger. Robert doesn’t even know how to interact with his young son who was just a toddler when he left.

With the coming of Yuletide, Robert and Elizabeth struggle to get to know each other again after the upheaval they’ve both faced and overcome the resentment and distance between them to see if their love can be reclaimed.

For such a short novella, this second chance story certainly packed an emotional punch. Elizabeth and Robert had lots of hurts to work through but seeing them find their way back to each other was just the heartwarming story I needed to get me into the Christmas spirit and the festive backdrop of Yuletide was perfect here.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Can you imagine being imprisoned for eight years, then coming home to see your family? Eight years is a long time and things had to have changed, emotions high and hopefully a second chance to become a family again.

A wonderful wrap up to this series with love found again and many questions answered. As always, this author brings you into the story and wraps it around your heart!

An Idiot and Bullying Laird a Hero??

I have read two different medieval Scottish series written by this author, and for the most part, I have enjoyed her stories. However, I did not remotely enjoy this one at all. I liked the premise when I read it at one of my favorite book review sites but was turned off nearly right away by the way the author handled the main character, the eponymous returning laird. To me, he first came off as an idiot in his first discussion with his wife (and in subsequent discussions and thoughts as well). Did he really think that she could have gotten a message to him during his captivity? Such would have been unlikely, even if she tried more than she had by pleading with the English king. It would have required a bribe, and there would have been no guarantee that briber would have followed through. For him to have such thoughts about her—from what she did and didn't do and her looks—seemed sheer idiocy to me. He was always willing to go make the worst assumptions about her, even though she kept their holdings together while he was gone and has raised their son as a single parent. I hate it when characters make wild (and wrong-headed) assumptions about others that have literally no basis in any fact whatsoever. He also seemed to expect that she should have filled him in on all the castle's history while he was in an English dungeon for eight years on that first night… that same first night he jumped to all the wrong conclusions. Seriously? Will he find fault with everything she did or didn't do? I felt sorry for the poor woman. She deserved a better man than she had. And on his first meeting with his now ten-year-old son, he's a bully. I became completely disgusted with the book when during their second fight, rather than acting like a rational man and having a reasonable discussion without assuming everything, including that he was completely in the right, he thought he could just kiss her and make it all better. And, gawds, she appeared to like it! Ack, no! Puh-leaze. I didn't find this book remotely “festive” as the author put on the cover. I didn't like it one bit.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

The Laird's Return is a lovely ending after the Immortal Highland Centurions trilogy. It is the story of Robert de Keith, Laird of Dunnottar Castle, his wife Elizabeth and their son, Robbie. Throughout the series Robert has been kept in prison by Edward Longshanks, King of England. Elizabeth, his wife, has had no word of him in all that time, not even knowing which prison he's being held in or if he's still alive. She is now the acting Laird raising their son alone. Suddenly Robert is released from prison after 8 long years and travels home...bitter, lonely and changed from the man he once was. Elizabeth has changed over the years, too, gaining strength and self-reliance from being Laird. When Robert unexpectedly returns he feels out of place, rudderless, seeing how the world has changed without him. His son was only 2 when he left and is now 10, a stranger to him. Elizabeth and Robert once deeply loved each other but now feel a great distance between them. They dredge up old resentments and they vie for their son's affections but underneath it all they realize their love and passion are still there. This is such a lovely, well-written story of a second chance at love.

I really enjoyed this novella and getting to read what happened to the three Centurions after the curse of their 100 years of Immortality ended 7 years ago....Maximus & Heather, Cassian & Aila and Draco & Gavina...and how their lives have changed. They all have children now, are blissfully happy and are aging gracefully, laugh lines and all. Now with Elizabeth and Robert happily reunited they all have come full circle. Thank you, Jayne Castel, for a beautiful conclusion to a fabulous series!!! Highly recommended!!!

This tugged at my heart!

The Immortal Highland Centurions series is about three warriors, survivors of the legendary Ninth Roman Legion who fought against the Picts in ancient Scotland, are captured, and for their punishment, are cursed with eternal life. But there is a fourth warrior (not immortal). He is Robert De Keith, Laird of Dunnottar. He has been missing for eight years. Throughout the trilogy, Robert has been held captive in an undisclosed location. His brutal brother was Laird for a brief time, until he was killed. Afterwards, his wife, Elizabeth, has been Laird. During his absence his two-year-old son has grown up without his father.

In The Laird's Return, Robert is suddenly released from prison. He shows up unexpectedly at Dunnottar just before Christmas. While happy to be free, he must come to terms with his bitterness at missing out so much of his family's life, and suffering the privations of being a prisoner of the English.

In the trilogy, Elizabeth has been an elegant and admirable woman, but eight years has strengthened her and she has become an effective leader. She has also grown very protective of her son. Robert's return necessitates changes to these relationships, and they must find a way to adapt so they can return to the loving relationship they once had.

This novella is a wonderful conclusion to the world of the Immortal Centurions. We get to see what has happened to Maximus and Heather; Cassian and Aila; and Draco and Gavina. I loved reading about their lives and children. And to read about how Christmas was celebrated in Medieval Scotland. This series was outstanding and I highly recommend it!

Will Their Love Heal Their Wounds?

Captured by opposing forces, Laird Robert De Keith has been imprisoned for eight years. He'd all but lost hope of ever seeing his home, or his wife and son. Now that he's free, he wonders if his nightmare is really over, or has it only just begun.

The day that Lady Elizabeth received word of her husbands capture was the day her emotional world paused. If not for her son, she might not have been able to function each day of the last eight years. Now that he's free, she wonders if her dreams have come true, or if she is about to step into a nightmare.

There are as many second-chance love stories as there are in-love couples who have suffered through long separations. Robert and Elizabeth's story may have happened in fourteenth century Scotland, but the language of true love is the same any where or in any time period.

I loved this last and final story featuring characters from The Immortal Highland Centurions series by Jayne Castel. Although a standalone Christmas novella, The Laird's Return is more of an extended epilogue to the first three novels. It is the perfect holiday conclusion to a really marvelous series and it ties together nicely the loose ends left dangling. Although Elizabeth's love and longing for her missing husband was never in question, getting to meet Laird Robert De Keith filled in many unanswered questions and served to prove again the binding strength of forever love.

Content 411: This is a mostly clean read. There is some passionate kissing and a mildly described bedroom scene.

Jayne Castel writes a wonderful Yuletide tale of hope, second chances, and love that can indeed surpass all understanding in its endurance, trials and tribulations. The final ending to The Immortal Highland Centurions series comes full circle with Robert and Elizabeth’s heartwarming, sweet tale.

Robert de Keith, Laird of Dunnottar Castle, returns home a different man after having been imprisoned by King Edward I for eight long and excruciating years in punishment for his brother’s hiding William Wallace in his keep. Having thought him long dead, his wife Elizabeth, now a different woman herself carried on, acting as Laird of Dunotter and raising their son Robbie alone. The years have weighed heavily upon them both.

The characters are just beautifully written. It’s true, Jayne does such a fantastic job of expressing all the pent-up gamut of emotions, fears and anxieties that Robert and Elizabeth have dealt with for the past eight years, all with compassionate empathy and passion.

I just loved seeing Robert and Elizabeth find their way back to one another. And to top it all off we get a chance to see our heroes, Maximus & Heather, Cassian & Aila and Draco & Gavina and their children all living mortal, happy and content lives enjoying the Yuletide celebration. Do yourself a favor and read the whole series and this absolutely incredible story filled with hope and love!

Thank you so much Jane for such a lovely, well written story of love, passion and hope.

4 Stars (Jayne Castel, Ashe Barker, Cecelia Mecca, Kerrigan Byrne)

my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions, 4. stories with family/friends and 5. I’ll end up reading the book again and again.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). For a short story, the past characters were Intwined nicely in the story.

The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable (enough written about past book H/H to grab your attention). I really did like the H/H for this book; well paired as a couple.

writing style is easy to follow, humorous moments, the give and take dialogue enjoyable.

I’m not a huge fan of ‘internal dialogue’ in books. I can only take so much. This did not have me doing any skimming.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

romantic/sexual content is written well throughout the book (kissing, oral, love making) I’d rate it 1.5/5 in hotness and steam.

would recommend the book and series. This series needs to be read in its order or you’ll miss the storyline completely.

🗡️🗡️ONE BREATHTAKING JOURNEY🗡️🗡️
Blazing blizzards! Jayne unleashes one tumultuous rollercoaster with this remarkable treat, dishing out traumatic experiences, heartbreaking lessons and adrenaline pumping drive, grabbing you from the start and holding steady until the end, hurling this jewel to staggering heights. Difficulty and mishaps descend in a flurry of tough choices and shrewd strategy, blurred barriers and broken perimeters solidify as restrictions are amplified and enforced, exposing the intense quirks and defying bents, kicking this baby into the eye of the storm, blasting it into a tailspin with mind-blowing results. Attributes and temperament in layer upon layer that you peel back with each page your drawn into this tangled web so thoroughly till everything else ceases to exist, reaching deep for every ounce of strength in a fierce surge of determination, blasting this baby to life spectacularly. The characters are complex, genuine and realistic with traits and qualities that balance and blend, with amazing depth and diversity and enough spice to add an extra kick to the mix. Throw in 100% on point realism, raising the stakes with such graphic scenarios that are so colorfully descriptive and vividly detailed its like you're living it with them instead of on the sidelines. Incredible job Jayne, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

The Laird's Return
A Highland Festive Romance Novella
The Immortal Highland Centurions #3.5
Jayne Castel
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Robert De Keith has spent the last eight years in an English dungeon. So it comes as no surprise to him that when he returns home to Dunnottar Castle that he just doesn't feel the same and doesn't fit into his old life anymore.

Elizabeth, his wife, has ruled the castle in his absence and it has changed her too. Even his young son seems rather uncomfortable around him.

As Yule approaches, Robert and Elizabeth try harder then ever to get over the bitterness and other things that they feel and have a normal marriage. But is is too late for them now?

Jayne Castle brings us an incredible final novella to this great series. I savored every word of this. This year I find I am enjoying reading Christmas stories alot more then last year. This was the perfect story to take me back to this series. I felt like the characters were family and I knew then all as well as a family member would. To see all of the Centurion's and their wives so happy. Elizabeth finally got her happy ever after. All in all I really enjoyed this novella and will probably read it again at a further date.

I enjoyed reading this novella about the missing character in the Immortal Centurions series. Robert De Keith is the formal Laird of Dunnottar Castle. When he went to battle over eight years ago, he was captured by the English and imprisoned. First his brother took over as Laird but due to his greed and over reaching ambition he was killed by Longshanks. Then his sister-in-law took over for his brother but she gave it up to marry. Now his wife Elizabeth runs the Castle and has done well. They each did not know how to be with each other. I feel the problem was Robert did not know how to express all that he went through to Elizabeth. She did not understand what he went through and felt he was not interested in all she had going on in his stead. Their biggest contention was their 10-year-old son. Elizabeth coddled him and Robert wanted to train him to be a warrior. She also felt threatened for his affections. It seemed their son was so delighted to have his Da back that Elizabeth was jealous. It was hot and cold for a while between them and then they got to the point where they understood each other. A fine story of the returning beloved Laird.

Is it too late for a second chance at love? An embittered laird. A loyal wife. A new start. A Yuletide Second chance love in Medieval Scotland.
Robert De Keith has spent the last eight years rotting in an English dungeon. But when he returns home to Dunnottar Castle he soon realizes he doesn’t fit into his old life anymore.
He is bitter and angry that his wife didn’t write to him or try to get him back.
His wife, Elizabeth, has ruled the castle in his absence. After her brother-in-law tried to kill the King, she thinks that her husband is dead but inside hopes that he will come home. When he returns to her he is not the same man and she is not the same woman, she is more confident and is used to running the Dunnottar Castle in his stead.
I was glad to be able to find out what happed to Robert and Elizabeth. They both have to leave past hurts behind them if they are to get to a place where their marriage can survive.
This was a thoughtfully written story.

Every once in awhile a series concludes in a fulfilling way and you think you're satisfied but then the author writes one more story that truly ends the entire story arc; this book is that story.

When Draco ends, you think the series ends and it does but one issue isn't resolved; will Robert De Keith return home. The Laird's Return: A Highland Festive Romance Novella (The Immortal Highland Centurions) answers that question.

Robert returns home but doesn't feel like he's really home. Elizabeth is happy that Robert is home, but he doesn't really seem like Robert. While the story is very short (81 pages) it leaves you feeling truly satisfied when you didn't really know you weren't satisfied until you read the book.

I never read books less than 100 pages, but did read this because I received it as an ARC and am so happy I did. It's a very quick read and extremely well written. I recommend this book, and all books by Jayne Castel.

The Laird's Return: A Highland Festive Romance Novella by Jayne Castel 4.5 Stars
Another great read! This novella is the fast paced emotional journey of Robert and Elizabeth. Robert Laird of Dunnottar was captured and imprisoned by the English King Edward I “Longshanks” for eight long years. Leaving his wife and young son to believe King Edward ordered Robert to be executed for his brother’s secretly hiding William Wallace in his keep and for his brother’s failed attempt to assassinate the King himself! Until, one day Robert came home. This is a touching story of strangers starting over and second chances. If you enjoy engaging characters, compelling storylines, drama, passion, and a happy ending at Yuletide, then you will love this story. You can read this story on its own but, I recommend to read the three book series and this novella last. They are all great reads!
Happy Reading♥️

Content Notes: Adult. Some explicit steamy romance descriptions 3-4 out of 5 flames. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I was beyond thrilled to learn that Robert and Elizabeth's reunion would take place at Yuletide, the most magical time of year. After 8 long years of being imprisoned, Robert is finally back home at Dunnottar but his homecoming is not as easy as it should be. So many years have gone by and he's not even sure who he is any more or where he fits in.

Elizabeth thought to never see her husband again and to have him suddenly home is like a miracle but he's changed, is bitter and angry. She also needs to learn to share their son which is hard for her since it's been only her and him for so many years. As emotions and feelings are shared, remembered love becomes whole and hearty again:)

An absolutely delightful ending to this very exciting series!!

Surprise!

What a surprise to find this book, "The Laird's Return: A Highland Festive Romance Novella" to complete this series, The Immortal Highland Centurions by Jayne Castel! I love it when the author gives the reader a bonus that answers the question: What happened to this minor character?
Robert De Keith was a prisoner of the English for many years and had missed so much of his life. He is not the same man who had left his home to go to war. He has to adjust to a son who has grownup without him and rekindle his relationship with Elizabeth, his wife. There are struggles. Robert is a bitter man and feels out of place in his own home while Elizabeth has gained strength and confidence. They must find a way to blend who they are now and grow.
I loved this unexpected gift from the author!

Robert De Kieth has returned home after spending nine years in an English prison. To a wife and son and clan he needs to reconnect with. Elizabeth and Robbie are happy to have him home. Elizabeth is up sure how to deal with Robert after being separated for nine years. Robert is anger and feels like they have forgotten him when he had not received and word from them in nine years. Can they work their way back together or are they doomed. I guess you’ll have to read the book to find out. Amazing characters that pull at you’re heart and a storyline the draws you in and keeps you there. This is apart of a series there are three books before this one . Maximus then Caspins then Draco all three are a must read

I really enjoyed this book, and I was sad to see it end. I loved how the story focused on themes like love, family, and second chances. Castel did a great job (as usual) of showing the pain, anger, and loss that both Elizabeth and Robert dealt with and how that affected their relationship. Despite their misunderstandings of each other, there is still love there waiting to be rekindled. Both characters' attempts at parenting were also really heartwarming to read. It was great to see our previous heroes Max, Cassian, and Draco with their families and how they have changed. If you enjoy a good story about family, love, and reconciliation then look no further.

Just when I sadly thought to have seen the last of Cassian, Cato and Draco, I found myself back at Donnottar Castle with all the characters of that series making appearances! Ms. Castel has taken tiny threads of the series, pulled them out, and fashioned yet another tale worth telling.
How does a couple separated for 8 years re-connect? What are the stresses that hamper their reunion, despite their abiding love? How do they overcome them? And how does a father BECOME the father his son needs so much? An artful telling of the reunion a family who had long thought they would never be together again.

This book is set several years after the final book in the Immortal Centurion series and concludes the story of Elizabeth and her imprisoned husband Robert. Throughout the previous books Robert was imprisoned by the English while Elizabeth moved from struggling to manage and bring up their son to a confident woman standing in for the missing Laird. Both have become very different people but their love was strong before they were torn apart. This story shows their relationship redevelop into something beautiful. A lovely ending to a fabulous series.

Heartwarming

This is beautifully written conclusion bringing any loose ends together for our Immortals and the Lairds of Dunnottar Castle. The story leaves you feeling warm and truly happy that all of our characters have found love filled lives. I was very excited when our author wrote this story of Elizabeth de Keith and her husband, Robert de Keith, both Lairds of Dunnottar Castle in their own right. Robert having been captured eight years ago and now returned find their love as strong as ever. A beautiful HEA.

Heartfelt Story Of Recapturing Love:
A wonderful story that picks up where The Centurions left off but it could be a stand alone story if you wanted.
Elizabeth and Robert reunite after a long separation and try to recapture their love. Their journey is not an easy one.
There is anger, jealousy, fear, and longing. It doesn't take long for the smoldering passion to surface.
Love scenes are very sensuously written and they had my attention.
This story really completed the series which I highly recommend reading them all.
Jayne's next book series STOLEN HIGHLAND HEARTS sound wonderful. I'll be watching for them.

Is this home

I never like Elizabeth from previous stories aka Liz! Too bossy, too mouthy and after reading this overprotective! Rob has been in the bowel of hell! Rob survived 8 years in an English prison in dungeons that were absolutely deplorable!
Elizabeth had been acting Laird very successfully but any normal person should have known to be warm and loving! The stars are for the glimpse into , Draco, Cassian, and Maximus they each have a family so excited for them! Elizabeth is bitter and has been the previous stories! She does love her son but no real chemistry to me with HR and Robert! Happy to get a conclusion and HEA!

I don't usually care for novellas because most of them don't go into enough depth for me. This one was well done. After having been imprisoned for over seven years, Robert comes home to his wife and son, who is now ten. The years they've been separated have changed both Robert and his wife, Elizabeth. Both have to overcome these changes in order to regain a close, loving, and trusting relationship. Of course, they accomplish this by the end of the story, a bit too quickly for my taste, but this is, after all, a novella and not a full-length novel.

I also enjoyed seeing how the couples fared who'd been portrayed in the series' first three novels. A truly HEA for everyone.

After Robert was released from the English prison and returns to Dunnotter Castle he feels like everything has changed and he may not adjust to the new changes. His wife Elizabeth has taken over running Dunnotter in his absence and she too has changed as she has gotten stronger and likes running things. When Robert left his son Robbie was only two and now he is ten and they do not really know each other but Robert still loves Elizabeth and his son if they can just find a way to be a family again.

A perfect ending to the series, this Christmas book is about second chances. After Robert returns from being imprisoned for eight years, he doesn't expect to see how much life has moved on without him. Elizabeth is happy that he is finally home, but now must share the responsibilities of running the keep and raising their ten-year-old son. She doesn't trust him to care for their son. Can they piece together their lives and their marriage for a second chance at happiness?
