See How They Run: A Retelling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Rate this book
Isabelle Crane arrives in Sleepy Hollow as the new schoolmistress. A friendly traveler warns her to ask why so many of the town's teachers have left the tiny village. PIcturesque as it may seem, something about the town - and especially the children - doesn't sit quite right. Though Isabelle is looking for a new life, starting it in a town with secrets might not have been the best idea.
A short story set just before Halloween - See How They Run reimagines the Washington Irving classic tale of Sleepy Hollow and the Van Tassel family.

K. A. Miltimore is a writer living in the Pacific Northwest who has followed the advice of her 5th grade teacher, Miss Hammond, and become a writer. She loves mid-century fashion, 80s music and nachos (not necessarily in that order). With her husband and son, she loves exploring quirky local towns, and dreams of dragging them both to Iceland for a tour someday. Her tombstone will likely read "Always Creating". In addition to writing, she enjoys making jewel spiders, looking for great Washington red wines, and re-watching the movies that she has forgotten over the years.

Isabelle Crane found a new job. She will be the new teacher in Sleepy Hollow. Everybody is extremely friendly upon her arrival. Only one man tells her to leave the village as quickly as possible. He says there is risk of death for her. All Hallows Eve is a couple of days away and Isabelle can't think why she should go away. Everything is perfect, the family she lives with, the children at school. When the alerter is shot things turn to the worse for Isabelle. What is going on in this village? Will she survive? What happened to all the teachers before her? A very good slow creeping horror tale with a good dose of 19th century charm. The twist at the end is brilliant and you are rewarded with some real horror and a nasty legend. Highly recommended. I loved this retelling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Perfect pre-Halloween spooky story. In this twist on the classic Headless Horseman tale, Isabelle Crane arrives in Sleepy Hollow to take up the post of schoolmistress, but just what did happen to all the previous occupants of her new position? Loved the atmosphere and imaginative reinterpretation of the original. Definitely builds a feeling of dread right up to the terrifying denouement, an image I won't soon forget. Great fun for readers who enjoy reimaginings of classics and Gothic horror.

Eerily chilling

Isabelle Crane needs a new start. She has to get out of her sister's house. When a posting for a schoolmistress in Sleepy Hollow catches her eye, she takes it. But Sleepy Hollow is weird and the children are weirder. Something is going on. Something sinister.

Short but so full of tension. A great read!

I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this book more than I anticipated. It was spooky, but not over the top.
