D.F. Hart is my pen name for suspense & thrillers; I've never found my given name to be particularly suspenseful or mysterious, so when I opted to finally give in to the siren call of writing, using my initials felt as natural as breathing. (I write contemporary romance as well, and you can find out more here on Goodreads by looking up D. Faith Hart!)
I’d always intended to be in this career; a college professor teaching Chaucer and Shakespeare somewhere and writing fiction in my off time. However, life has a sense of humor, it seems. Before I even realized it, I found myself hip deep into a career in Accounting – just about as far left-brained as you can get from being an author. I went with that flow and obtained my MBA with Accounting concentration to augment what I’d learned ‘in the trenches.’ I’m going on my twenty-sixth year of ‘crunching numbers’; I like it and I am good at it. But it has never been my passion, and it never will be.
In 2009, the pull to write became overwhelming. I’d had the plot idea for “Wall of Secrets” since 1989, but until I approached my fortieth birthday had been too timid to get it out of my brain and onto paper. I finally decided I’d wasted enough time. If nothing else ever came out of it, I would at least walk that fire path and put this story out into the world. “And the Wall Came Down” was the original title of the result.
By late 2018, I felt I’d told a good first story back then, a unique one, a gripping one. But it seemed a shame to just end it there. So, I picked up the loose threads I’d deliberately left at Wall’s conclusion ten years prior, and started weaving the sequel, re-titling books and their stations along the way. “And the Wall Came Down” became “Wall of Secrets”, the history-and-backstory rich prequel of the Vital Secrets series, and its sequel, “Book Keepers”, morphed into “Book of Secrets“, the first 'official' book in the set.
2019 also brought with it a unique opportunity to truly ‘go indie’, and I seized the chance and haven’t looked back. The advent of the next title in the Vital Secrets Series, “List of Secrets“, firmly set the path for a ensemble cast of characters whose lives develop and grow throughout the series while battling bad guys and catching killers.
Seven stories plus the prequel are the plan for the Vital Secrets series. The final installment, "End of Secrets", will be done sometime in 2022. I've also started a new series, "Raven's Path", which will follow an international hitman's travels as he wrestles with being a hired killer with a moral compass. The first installment, "Raven's Rise," will be released June 26, 2021.
I liked that the plot moved quickly but the author missed many details that would have helped develops the characters. People showed up with no introduction or info. You don’t find out occupations until chapters later. Glad it was free won’t buy rest of them
ps: spoiler alert cause I was spoilt — my own fault. So, to tell this review, I’d need to simply just blurt everything out. Spoilers ahead. I won’t hide this review in all, cause while I tell all, there are zero details. Also, kindle dictated for how long I’d read, btw — makes me wonder if replacing the battery is the way to go, or simply buying newer device would be the best option. I ask for feedback on this, my fellow bookworms.
Okay, then, this is Vital Secrets series (bundle of book 1-3, but as you can tell, reviews will be separate!) is my first read for 2024 (finished today, Jan 2, 2pm sharp), picked this set at random after seeing cover with dude holding a gun and some words like, crime, thriller, suspense, detective work etc attached to it. All that, set my mindset for CSI, NCIS; set the standards too high, but the coincidences were piling up too hard and too fast, I just followed the letters on the e-page.
This book was filled with coincidences and breakthroughs with actual connections lacking dead-ends you ought to find in such genres, everyone was too smart and too sharp to make mistakes or look elsewhere; the whole introduction of too many characters without a second thought to carefully build them, or even tell us something more than a name within the first paragraphs instead of maybe 5 chapters away, really grind me the wrong way enough to stop and write this down. Just a tiny bit of criticism. I have come to like a few of them and side-eyeing Paula character hard. RIP.
Falling in love for the first time is hard when you’re an intelligent psychopath. Falling in love at first sight with a brand new FBI profiler when you’re an intelligence young woman, it’s good. This book centers in the lives — heavily — of both Bella and Mikel. Mikel being the psychopath you can immediately tell is the killer, Bella being the unfortunate object of Mikel’s Cupid arrow.
You know it, it’s fast paced enough where you’re barely registering the time span of things. And a lot of things happen. A lot. Death of loved ones, degenerates (as the book called), death of more loved ones, blossoming young minds going missing and coming back lobotomized in some way, mind control, nanotechnology. Relationships getting serious. Weddings. Pregnancies. Killings. Rapes. Killings. New relationships once again. It goes on, until the bad guy lands in a comma. How he survives and with their mind intact, it was never answered. Just happened. You accept it. Then, you accept some more stuff that seems impossible and BOOM. A trail of deaths on two shoulders. A strong-minded woman that unfortunately just couldn’t make it. And Thunder just lighting the bullseyes of a psychopath. The End.
There’s a book 2, so won’t delve too deep into this review. Once the bundle 1-3 books are done, this review will be uploaded to that book. If you’re just passing by, don’t worry. This is a message for the Goodreads folks. A copy-pasta, that might get my audiences from different places confused, but it’s new year, new me, less filter, less mindfulness. Really in a hurry to keep reading. Bye.
A really good thriller. Just when you think it is over, that the danger has been destroyed, it comes back again. The writer does a good job of keeping you involved and on your toes.
I was confused in a couple of areas, it seemed too many characters to keep up with at times, which is why I only gave it a 4-star rating. But all in all, it was well written. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a good mystery/thriller read.
Just a story, unimaginative and plodding. No drama, no tension, no anything really. All the 'goodies' are too good to be true and fall in love at first sight as a prelude to idyllic marriages. The villains are formulaic and too bad to be true.

Readers’ Comments ‘Not bad at all. Best character: Nathan, best part: prologue; absolute gem: short, simple, powerful, slightly shocking. The way it was written (not overly complex, simple vocab) will work well for this genre.’ Male reader, aged 42 ‘If you enjoy a scary thriller, this might fit the bill. A little too predictable for me, but it’s a perfect book for sitting on the sofa with a glass of wine.’ Female reader, aged 62 ‘The central characters were very well-developed; you really get to know them. This seems to be very much plot driven with lots of twists to keep the reader guessing. I was so happy to read the second book and to learn how the characters and story continued. Loved the new characters. There was such sweetness and love shown between Bella and Nathan also Faith and Rick. The suspen held me to the very last page. The story was extremely well written and you could tell much research and thought went into the writing of this amazing story. I am ready for another story.
Book of Secrets is the first book in the Vital Secrets series (but really the second because this is a case where you absolutely need to read the prequel first to have any idea what is going on). It introduces you to Nathan Thomas, FBI profiler, and Bella Amsel (who is a minor character in the prequel). They find insta-love in Vegas and when they start their lives back home and Nathan takes a case that soon reveals it has ties to Bella the stakes feel high. It's not long before they realize Bella is being stalked by a psychotic individual with mind control nanotechnology and will stop at nothing to have Bella as his trophy.
Unfortunately, this book wasn't a win for me. I'm not big on the insta-love trope (and every couple in the book had this type of relationship) and the characters were really over the top. Almost like if you were watching a show or a film and the actors were "over-acting". The antagonist was over the top evil with no real background other than that's just who he was. The protagonists had no faults. There was no complexity or real personality. I also had a hard time with the pacing. Characters came in and out very suddenly with no introductions or exits or really even understanding the purpose and the scenes also bounced around very very quickly.
Lastly just a very personal pet peeve of mine--I can't stand when a book uses medical professionals or medicine incorrectly to help move the plot. I have a really hard time suspending reality in those cases. I just get too worked up about it!
Some of the plot did seem like it had potential and believe it or not I think I have one more book in this series on my Kindle that I'm still considering reading. I think the rest of the series focuses more on cases that Nathan has and less on his and Bella's relationship and I *may* give it one more shot... after a big break though.
In this volume of Vital Secrets, the book of secrets chronicles the killing spree that Mikel and Paula are responsible for. They go from town to town, in different states, killing as they go. Paula does all he killing, while under control of Mikel as they travel on a route taking them closer to Bella and Nathan. If it is possible, it seems that each killing is more bloody than the one before. Meanwhile, the FBI are closing in and getting closer to arresting them each time. Leaving a bloody trail, Mikel is getting closer to his Angel and he wants nothing more than her, his Angel, Bella forever. Along with that is the love story of Rick and Faith and how a bookstore brings the two of them together in a true love story that proves there is a time for everyone to find true and lasting love, and how the details seem to iron themselves out as the story progresses. An engaging love story and a bloody adventure keep the reader engaged until the very end.
I have just finished "Book of Secrets", and while I admit that I rate the books I read higher than probably others this was again a fantastically good story by a gifted author. The story started out rather calm and then exploded with action that would not stop until the end. The way the author left the book end speaks to a 2nd continuing book to be written that will continue in the same vain that was started in book 1. I found the story easy to be stopped and when restarted by me and yet I was immediately right back in the action as if I had not stopped, which made pausing easier to do when I needed to do other things. This was again a new author for me and I will say that she made my reading experience a good one and I also recommend her to everyone looking for an author can write about action that puts you in the middle of it all which makes everything seem real to me and anyone that reads this story.
I enjoyed this book and will buy the next one. In general I felt that it was very well written and kept my interest throughout. Why did I just give it 4 stars? There were parts that were just not believable. For example, the majority of couples in this book experienced love at first sight. Now I believe in soul mates and for them love at first sight. It happens but those instances are few and very far between. Not in this book. It was the norm. There were also coincidences, particularly with people meeting, that were possible but unlikely. These things took something away from an otherwise well written book. Like I said, I enjoyed it and am getting ready to read the next one. In spite of the above irritants, I would definitely recommend it.
A really hard going story about Nathan Thomas, his to be wife Bella and her stalker Mikel Metzger.
Metzger is a very tough irrational killer. You will need to read the prequel Wall of Secrets to get his back story. But he lead his fathers business and used nanotechnology to control people to kill them.
Nathan is an FBI profiler who along with Detective Zimmerman conclude that there is a serial killer on the loose.
Metzger has a fixation on Bella going back to his time at university. He is happy to play the long game, very long in Belle’s case just like his father before him!
I won’t spoil the story by saying anything else about it except that it is very tense and at time exasperating and annoying that Metzger gets away with things for so long.
Good ideas, poor execution. The main flaws that stopped me being more engaged were:
* The narrative shifts POV far too often and at times that don't always make sense. It's not uncommon for the scene to shift four or five times in as many pages. It's disorientating and makes it harder to stay engaged in the narrative. * Bland, undeveloped characters. Black and white morality reigns supreme here - the 'good guys' never step a foot out of place for more than about five seconds, while the bad guy is a literal Nazi. * Far too many plot points that get forgotten about or resolved so quickly there's almost no point in bringing them up.
It's a shame because the same concept with a different style of narrative could have produced a far more engaging story.
This book was really a page turner and I really enjoyed it - the characters were well developed and the author has a strong story line. My one disappointment was that everyone found a mate and fell in love at first site - I know that that might just happen - I mean a know a couple that married 3 weeks after they met and have been married over 50 years - but in today's society - well not so much. I am excited to hop into the next book in the series, and see where the author takes me. I received a free copy of this book with the only request a true and honest review
I loved this book. Will definitely be getting more of this series. I enjoyed the suspense, mystery, adventures, romances, and everything in between! This story will have you thinking about it when you leave it for a bit, have your adrenaline going, then you will laughing and crying with all the sisters and brother. Mikel is one cold and sick freak! Nathan and Max will do what ever it takes to bring him in, or take him out if possible. If you enjoy suspense I highly recommend this book.
From the very beginning I thought (and that is just me!) that there were too many characters and had to go back to figure out who belonged to whom. Overall it was a good read after figuring out the characters. I am still puzzled, how do you get shot directly in the chest and not die from it. I thought the heart was someplace in there. That nut was waaaaay over the hill but made the story interesting and once Nathan got his act together it got even better. The book did end on an upper which is good I think.
Although the plot of recreating the Reich characters has been part of many fiction stories, none that I´ve read until The Book of Secrets was so creepy or intense. It has very twisted minds and plans, lots of action, romance, crime, goodness and the relentless work of a very determined FBI agent. It was a very entertaining reading albeit a little long. I donwloaded a free copy of this copy and this is my honest opinion.
My introduction to the writing of D.F. Hart truly grabbed my attention. With a plot that could've been taken from the headlines, Book of Secrets, is certainly a page turner. Other than a few editing errors, the only negative thing I can say (& it Could be a positive...although somewhat unrealistic) is that all the couples included in the story are perfectly suited to one another.
SHADES OF THE MOVIES; NIGHT HAWKS & RELENTLESS. AS I READ BY 21% I'M TALKING OUT LOUD THIS WAS LIKE WATCHING A TRAIN WRECK. STORYLINE IS A BIT UNBELIEVABLE AT TIMES BUT I ENJOYED IT ANYWAY. I WAS BOTHERED A LITTLE WITH THE DIALOG BETWEEN THE COUPLES THEM CALLING EACH OTHER "BABY" SEEMED JUST A LITTLE OFF TO ME. NOT SEXUALLY EXPLICIT. IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD READ, HELD MY INTEREST AND THE ENDING WAS PERFECT. ;D
Thank you Sister of mine....Melinda...For sending this book too me...I Loved it....Just Finished List of Secrets also....another Great Read...next is...Web of Secrets....looking Forward to reading this one....To me....its hard to put these books down...Thank you D.L.Hart for some Good reading...I So Enjoyed...😊😊😊
Really interesting, not like your usual detective novels. Lots of action and adventure and cute romance but on a serious note, the details of the the whole suspense and crime and how everything was linked was really well put together. I really enjoyed this book. Really recommend it.
To start with I thought I was going to hate this book with its Sci-fi mind control serum angle, however I quickly became hooked on the story line and began to enjoy it. Clearly I’m a cynic because all the falling in love at first sight and perfect relationship rubbish irked me! But generally a good read that was fast paced and kept you needing to know more!
Very interesting and entertaining storyline about a new type of serial killer murdering with the help of nano controlled human guinea pigs left over from WWII technology.
A story of a young couple. Bella and Nathan, their families and friends. A closeness they have for each other. The mind of evil and how it works, Mikel; Murder, mysterious thriller. Who wins and who loses?
I really enjoyed this book. It was my first time reading this author and I loved the suspense and how the narration changed from character to character to keep it interesting!
I read the second book first so did not know the characters from the first book and did not understand their place in the story. Again, well written. I've bought the third book which I'll start now. I expect to enjoy it as much as the first two.
I really enjoyed Book of Secrets (Vital Secrets 1), the story moved flawlessly along only giving enough information to keep you intrigued . I highly recommend reading this books and kudos to the author, can’t wait to get book 2!
Good story. Loved Max and the relationship between Faith and Rick. The relationship between Bella and Nathan was terribly goofy. The evil in this story is very evil and obviously was not eliminated since this is book 1 of a series. I'm a no to continue the series.
What an exciting read this was!! It got half way through and I thought the story was over but then more unfolded and then more. The story that kept on giving!! Such wonderful characters that I loved and hated. I was disgusted, laughed, teared up and felt like I was on a journey. Thank you
