About the author

To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.

Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

I have enjoyed reading these stories very much. They are set in the 1860s, in the very early days of the police service in England. The private lives of Inspector Daniel Haze and Lord Jason Redmond, esteemed American surgeon, come to England to claim his inheritance and stayed, are very much a part of the stories. They are both interesting characters, one with typically traditional views on society and each person's place in it, coming up against the much more progressive, open views of a modern American and finding himself questioning his own ideas. I find this interesting. The mysteries also are interesting enough to keep me reading more.
The reason for four stars instead of five is because the speech of the 1860s characters is peppered with American words and turns of phrase which, once noticed, became somewhat obvious and slightly irritating. I also unexpectedly found a historical mistake. I have never been that person who continually finds fault with facts in a story,but these books turned me into one. I recommend them nevertheless to anyone who enjoys a detective story and historical police procedures.

Jason and his orphaned ward, Micah, having survived the atrocities of the American Civil War prisoner camp, settle in England to assume Jason’s birthright of nobility. Unintentionally Jason begins to solve the murders plaguing the small town with his new friend, Constable Daniel. The intrigue of his personal and professional lives create a fast moving story I could not put down.

Loved the fully formed characters, the back story of the civil war, the escapades of an American trying to adapt to British society, and the details about different personalities. But I realized that each book begins with a dead body and ends in triumph... wish the author had shaken things up a bit because I enjoyed reading these first three books in the Redmond and Haze series.

I enjoyed this historical cozy mystery set very much. Irina Shapiro is a gifted writer. Good characters, good mysteries with lots of suspense, twists and turns. Fun for a fast read.

Character Study

Love the characters. The mysteries seem like a backdrop. This is the 3rd book I’ve read in the series, and I will definitely go on.
