Travel books are special genre and a book may or may not vibe with you, just as fiction book may or may not. This is my type of travel books. It can be recommended to anyone new to Japan, but it also has a lot to offer someone who has already been there are few times - without getting completely obscure. This is useful for tourists and it makes us not feel ashamed about needing a guidebook. It notes which restaurants comes with English menus, but doesn't only include those. It has useful tips on when to make reservations and get tickets far in advance and it's not afraid to tell us to get the staff at the hotel to help us with those reservations, because unlike some other books I've come across, this does not assume that its readers know Japanese.
My only complaint would be that I feel like it's really underselling Yokohama. "You can do a daytrip from Tokyo and see all the sights!" Jonathan, dude, my man. I once spent almost two weeks in Yokohama without even a daytrip to Tokyo and I was never bored. Please look harder, mkay?
If you’re looking for a great rainy-day option, or you simply want a break from temple-hopping, head to the Kyoto Railway Museum. A hit with kids and train lovers, this museum traces the train history from the steam engine all the way to the bullet train. Old bullet-train models, commuter trains from days past, and even steam locomotives are on display. It’s also possible to hop aboard a steam locomotive and go for a short ride (adult 300 Yen, child 100 Yen)."
