Rate this book
Croak is a collection of delightful quotes and gorgeous photographs celebrating the underappreciated beauty of frogs. It will delight anyone with a fondness of these fascinating creatures, and may surprise others who haven’t yet come to appreciate the members of the animal kingdom who ‘croak’.As amphibians, frogs are part of the most threatened group of land animals. They come in every shape and form, from round blobs to leaf-like mimics; they live on every continent in the world except for Antarctica; and they have a huge variety of lifestyles and reproductive modes, from giving birth to live young and carrying babies around on their backs to living their entire lives in deep caves underground! Croak will open your eyes to their vibrant variety and the urgent need to protect our amphibian friends. Many of the stunning, colourful images in Croak were taken by author Phil Bishop on his travels around the world. They showcase frogs in their natural habitats, paired with quotes from famous faces such as Cameron Diaz and John Steinbeck. Simultaneously amusing and illuminating, this is the perfect coffee table book to be dipped into occasionally, or to be read all at once by budding frog-aficionados.So if you’re interested in what frogs were up to 65 million years ago, or how they are related to 10% of all Nobel prizes, pick up Croak and find out all about these wonderful creatures.

Frogs have been around far longer than us and are found on every continent except Antarctica. There are thought to be around 8300 species of these amphibians. So far we have identified around 88% of them. They may be more, but no one really knows.

Sometimes you never know the true value of a creature until it becomes a memory – Suzy Cato

Most live in damp places as you’d expect, by being ever adaptable there are some that can live in deserts. This book is a collection of amazing photographs and quotes that Bishop has collected together. The text is from a variety of people such as Harrison Ford, Colin Tudge, Roald Dahl, Lou Read and even one from a puppet; you’ve guessed it, Kermit.

When we save the frogs, we’re protecting all our wildlife, all our ecosystems and all humans – Kerry Kriger

This is a delightful little book. The quotes are quite memorable and amusing occasionally about our little amphibious friends. Couple this together with a series of stunning images and it is quite the visual feast. Seeing all these pictures reminds me that not all frogs are green; the colour variation between the various species is just staggering. There is a list of the species at the back of the book, but I did feel that it could have done with a few lines about each of them to highlight where they come from and if they are endangered or not.

A collection of photographs and quotations.

Croak is glorious! I loved it. Firstly it is the perfect coffee table book being a relatively compact size, with an extremely high quality, vivid hard backed cover and with natural orange end papers that are reminiscent of autumnal colours. Each double page spread includes a fantastic frog photograph of the quality on the cover, alongside quotations from all manner of people. These quotations are presented on pages edged by or fully coloured like parchment so that Croak has a luxurious and timeless appeal.

At the end of the book are the species names and locations of the creatures featured with the photographer credited and some useful web site addresses for those who’d like to find out more making Croak educational.

The quotations are brilliant. They include pithy comments from writers such as Shakespeare, Voltaire and Mark Twain through actors and celebrities like Stephen Fry, Daryl Hannah and Robin Williams to renowned conservationists. What other book provides you with a frog themed joke from Tommy Cooper immediately followed by a quotation from Goethe? The quotations made me smile, gave me pause for thought and had me nodding in agreement.

Croak is a wonderful book for frog lovers, for those interested in conservation and for those looking for inspiration too. It would make a fabulous gift and I thought it was excellent.

Frog lovers will love this book
This review is based on an advance copy of CROAK I received from the publisher. It is the most delightful book I’ve ever seen about frogs. I can’t wait to share it with my granddaughter who has a fascination with these little creatures. But CROAK isn’t a book specifically for children. With the spectacular photography and thought-provoking quotes with each photo, it will delight young and old, or in-between, alike.
The book is hardcover, 160 pages long, with a single photo per page spread, with the quote on one side and frog on the other. It encourages the reader to marvel, think, and rejoice with each turn of the page. Frog lovers of all ages will love it.
