I’ve tried. I really did. But at a certain point enough is enough!
And after 5 books I can confidently say that Society for Paranormals just isn’t for me.
Which is okay!!!

To keep it short and sweet: there wasn’t much I enjoyed.
The plot was easy to see through and somehow still managed to not make a whole lot of sense.
The mysteries came in too late time and time again.
The characters were kind of insufferable, above all Bee herself who was a hypocrite and simply annoying.
And lastly (and worst of all) we were told everything and shown nothing.

Which is a bummer because the premise intrigued me, and I was excited for the African setting and mythology. Sadly, none of that came into play as much as I had hoped for.

So, I am officially done with that series.

I earlier read a shorter box set of the first five books of The Society for Paranormals and enjoyed it immensely. This series follows the adventures of Mrs. Beatrice Knight, commonly called Miss Knight, a widow who moves to Nairobi with her aunt, uncle, and two cousins, along with the ghost of her deceased husband, Gideon. This move happened in 1899 when Nairobi was primarily a camp for workers on the Uganda railroad.

Miss Knight begins her stay in Africa as a member of the Society for Paranormals and Curious Animals. But she eventually decides to sever her connections with this outfit when she learns of the treachery of her former mentor, the werewolf Prof Runal, the head of the Society.

While there, she encounters all manner of spirits, shapeshifters, mythological creatures, and other paranormal types. She also discovers much more than she ever knew before about her own origins.

Furthermore, many, but not all, of her supposedly normal friends and relatives have experiences that change them into paranormal beings as well or wind up marrying paranormal beings. Miss Knight herself winds up remarrying an energy and identity thief, thus becoming Mrs. Timmons. This is particularly hilarious as her ghost husband persists in hanging about, and the two husbands bicker about Miss Knight’s adventures. Occasionally they even agree.

Among the creatures Miss Knight encounters are Koki, a West African she-demon who can shift from a beautiful woman to a praying mantis in any of several sizes, a pair of Adze, which are African vampires whose alternate forms are fireflies, and Le-Eyo, the god of Death.

The author provides a brief recitation of which parts of the story have some basis in fact as opposed to which are fictional. These listings are at least as funny as the rest of the books.

Unusual, funny and rather addictive

The complete series contains 10 novels following widowed Beatrice Knight as she travels from England, after her guardians the Stewards fall from grace, to Nairobi. Bee has a secret, she's part werewolf and part witch and had been working for the Society of Paranormals in London. She's been asked to continue her activities on behalf of the society in Nairobi but Bee is beginning to realise that things are not as simple as she first thought.. even her own life may not have been quite what she first thought.. her parents deaths, her relationship with Professor Runal comes under question as she figures out that he may have been involved in their murder.

Trying to negotiate with a series of African myths, legends and Gods Bee finds herself recruiting an array of rather interesting friends and acquaintances, Anansi the giant trickster spider, Koki his wife, Liongo, Le-Eyo, Kam, the twin lioness shifters and many more.. all while trying to hide her own true nature and riding off to the rescue on Nelly the sleepy, belching horse who develops some rather useful powers of her own.

I really enjoyed it and I hadn't expected to quite that much. So if you like to have a heroine who doesn't do as expected, especially considering the Victorian setting then do read on.. be aware that this relates to the colonisation of Africa and that there are aspects that reflect the views of the time, although our heroine doesn't show herself in a bad light overall there's points which could trigger upset.. I think we need to hold in our minds that this is fiction and fantasy not factual writing although Vered does end each novel with some interesting fact and fiction notes giving an insight into the truth.

I'm a huge fan of the Mitzy Moon series, but having read all of the released books to date, I went in search of a new author to read. The Society for Paranormals series caught my eye and I thought surely 10 books would keep me busy for a while. I should have known better.

The reality is that when I become invested in a character or series, pretty much everything else has to take a back seat to my reading other than work. And if I'm not fully engrossed in a new book, I frequently just put it down and don't finish it. I became engrossed and enthralled in the Society for Paranormals: The Complete 10 Book Supernatural Cozy Mystery Series series extremely quickly and raced through it. And now I'm sad that it is over!

What I hated: It's over and there aren't any more in the series.... :-(

What I loved: Pretty much everything else! But here goes.
1. LOVE the characters! The depth of the character development was part of the reason I became so attached.
2. LOVE the crazy conundrums and situations they get themselves into!!!
3. LOVE the environments. All so very well thought out and described - I could easily picture them in my 'minds eye'.
4. LOVE the 'Fact and Fiction' section! So cool to learn how history shaped some of the characters, what was actually true and what was not. Brilliant!

I strongly recommend this series for a fun, entertaining, well written and unique series! ENJOY

This must-read series is brilliant and hilarious!

So far, I have only read two of the books, but this series is one of a kind. I love it so much! The uniquely tough heroine, Miss Beatrice Knight, is one that you do not want to miss. She is such a trip! This genre-defying series will appeal to many people, and it is suitable for teens and adults. It is a funny urban fantasy, but it is set in circa 1899 Nairobi, Kenya. It is also a cozy mystery series, but all of the African legends and myths are real and walking around. There is very witty dialogue and Victorian culture, but there is also a hilarious farting pony! To top it all off, the cast of characters is diverse and fascinating. The author lives in modern day Nairobi, so she really captures the landscape, vegetation, animals, and culture of the real Kenya. I think this boxed set is a treasure.

Fascinating

This author certainly likes to enhance African tales especially the creatures of folk lore. The characters are all interesting in their own way and of course Miss Knight is the main character who is against the decorum of the time and refuses to sit and be the perfect housewife and she cannot live without tea. All the books are interesting in their own way but reading all the collection in on go got too much and started to become a little mundane. All told not a bad series but perhaps a little prim and proper as it was in the time it was set.

Never a dull moment with this series

This is one of the best series I have read. It has everything you want in a paranormal novel. You can find plenty of action, strange paranormal creatures, and of course romance. It is made up of wonderful characters who catch your imagination from the beginning to end. I can't wait for another book in this series.

Engrossing

Initially disappointed, the beginning reminded me of another series that I had thoroughly enjoyed and I didn't want to read a poor copy.
Suddenly the book evolved into something entirely different. Stunning settings, enticing characters and an adventure waiting. I'm already missing Beatrice.

Brilliant book!

I've been looking for a book on African mythology, and here she is, mixed with colonial africa, a bit of steampunk and lots of african demonology and mythical creatures. All this is wrapped in with very real characters and the authors' ability to turn out a captivating story with a female lead. Sigh... now for a spot of tea.

Reading novels by descendants of colonialists is always a bit fraught and there were definitely some things in these stories that made me a bit uncomfortable, but, overall, I think the author handles those issues reasonably well. Apart from that, the stories were solid and the characters were engaging. I come away satisfied, having gotten the light entertainment and novelty I was hoping for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was so different. I also enjoyed that it was set in the Victorian era. And primarily in Africa. Just one great read. I am not the best reviewer, but if you enjoy the paranormal and cozy mysteries, this is for you

Steampunk, paranormal adventures in Kenya. Filled with unforgettable characters (one of my favorites being a horse who devoured a snake spirit), Beatrice Knight and her ghost husband, Gideon, and even a lightning god!

Read the first adventure and you’ll be hooked!

I veered from my usual cozy...

And tuned into the paranormal. Not one to stray this far afield, I was never the less quickly entranced by the setting and characters and enthralled in the twists and fast paced action, gripped and flung into the vortex Vered Ehsani has crested.

Fun series

Quirky characters in madcap adventures. Ehsani does a great job conveying the personalities of the different people in the country. I love the way she brings to life all the paranormal monsters in African culture. Love Yao!

Fun read, definitely recommended.

I was pleasantly surprised the books moved along so delightfully. The characters were well done and rounded out. I read many books of a more serious nature, but I kept coming back to Mrs. Vered Ensani’s books for fun and pleasure.

Having just finished these ten books I need rest as I've barely been able to sleep while trying to keep up with 'Miss Knight's shenanigans. A truly exciting, exhilarating, exhausting and wonderful series.

Great fantasy tale in a colonial setting

Superb dating and location in Africa circa 1900. I'm not a fan of historical stuff but this is undeniably a fantastic magical adventure with the style just incidentally providing date and place. The whole thing was wonderful... Read it!
