Hunted Girl by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson
is the second in the Detective Rachel Ryder series.

First, let me thank the publisher Severn River Publishing (in particular Cate Streissguth) and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Detective Rachel Ryder left her 15 year career on the Chicago police force, and moved to Hamby Georgia, after the death of her husband.  Although she killed the man who shot Tommy, the person that hired the killer was just released from prison.    In her first major case in Hamby, she found and fought corruption in the police force and government.  She now has a new boss, and things are looking up. Her new partner is a veteran of 30 years, Rob Bishop.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
A man is found overdosed, and the needle gets linked to Brad Pruitt, a family friend of Detective Bishop.  Brad is a drug addict who couldn't be helped, although his brother and sister tried for years.  But no one really thinks that Brad would murder anyone.  A skull necklace is found at the scene that seems to link the murder to the Mexican drug cartel....and to Rachel's past.

Rachel is sure that Petrowski is responsible, and is coming for her.  But things aren't adding up, although the bodies are.

So, Is Rachel putting her new friends and team at risk, or do these deaths have nothing to do with her.

My Opinions:
Well, I admit that the first book was good, although the topic of police corruption and politics was not my cup of tea.  Unfortunately, this second book is about drug cartels, and that doesn't really appeal to me either.  I swear if the next one is all romance, I'm out.

I found that there were so many suspects, and different theories, that it got a bit confusing at times.

All that being said, the story was good.  The writing is good....and although she's a bit of a time-bomb, I'm starting to really like Rachel (although some of her decisions are rash).  I absolutely love the other characters in the book - probably better than I like Rachel.  They are all gaining depth, and are very likeable.

Yes, I will be reading the next one!

Looking for a gritty mystery to sink your teeth into, well look no further! Fabulous characters who are well fleshed out to bring reality and humanity to the surface, sunk into a layered plot with many moving parts that meld together to make one exciting plot to delight and entertain for your reading pleasure. The main character is a tough, intelligent female detective from Chicago who has relocated to the south to attempt to start over after her life crashed around her, but the powers that lead to that crash may not be done with her yet and may have hunted her all the way to Georgia. While this book is part of a series, you could enjoy this as a stand alone. I would however, recommend starting with the first book to prolong your reading pleasure and fill in a bit of back story. I really look forward to reading from this series as I quite like the characters.

Fast-paced! Riveting! Emotional! Suspenseful! Compelling! Complex! This book brings it ALL! It was an artful melding of twisted psychological thrills and nail-biting suspense. THIS is how you do a next-in-series and keep a reader wanting more!

*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

This author reached out to me on Insta to read an ARC of her upcoming book on this series, I think it’s 7. I have seen the series around but hadn’t read it yet. I happen to just finish a book. So I dived into book 1. And read fast.

So I just finished this book and WOW. The more I dive into this series and characters…the more I’m hooked. It’s fast, with many twists. And Rachel is a bada$$ cop. I love the premise, I LOVE the surrounding characters and boy do I love the action. This author has a great voice in this genre. Diving into book 3 NOW‼️

If you enjoy police procedural thrillers with a strong female lead, these Rachel Ryder books are tailor made for you. Hunted Girl follows Rachel on a case that involves the murder of a close friend’s family member while she attempts to resolve a personal threat that stems back to her past and the loss of her husband. I had wondered how Carolyn Ridder Aspenson was going to follow up the initial Rachel Ryder story, now I can say she did it with a bang and hit this one out of the park. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.

After listening to the audiobook for Hunted Girl I felt the need to update my original review. Once again Anne Marie Damman does an awesome job of bringing Rachel, Rob, and the rest of the cast to life. Even though I had previously read this book, listening to the audiobook felt not only like experiencing the story for the first time, but it also filled in a few gaps where my reading seems to have missed. Thanks to Severn River Publishing for providing me with an audiobook review copy of Hunted Girl.

Hunted Girl by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson
Rachel Ryder #2

Detective Rachel Ryder, in her second book, is dealing with grief, flashbacks, a new job in the South in a town that is much smaller than Chicago, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. She is someone I am warming up to and hope will eventually find her way forward…in more ways than one.

What I liked:
* Rachel: widow, detective, goldfish owner, friend, listens to her gut on the job, conflicted on this case, still finding her way after the loss of her husband.
* Rob Bishop: Rachel’s work partner, supportive, focused, wants justice for someone he knows
* Chief Abernathy: wise, strong, good leader, aware, capable, someone I respect
* Lenny: Rachel’s one-time boss, neighbor. Also, a father figure and mentor who lives back in Chicago
* Garcia: Rachel’s partner in Chicago
* The writing, location, and plot
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* Getting to know some of the supporting/secondary characters better
* Being able to feel the various conflicts Rachel (and Bishop) experienced throughout the case
* The twists and turns
* That the bad guys were exposed and dealt with
* The lead-in to book three.
* Wondering if Rachel would ever get over the loss of Tommy and be able to move on – if so, will it be with someone else in law enforcement, or someone not involved in it at all

What I didn’t like:
* Knowing that the drug issues, crimes, murders, etc. are no doubt real and were presented believably.
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

You have done it again!! Another thrilling read in this new series!! Keep it up!!!

You have the this genre down pat. For those that are now confused, this author also writes wonderful books in the cozy and magical genres. This book, for me, is more thriller mystery. Not sure what you would call it.

Quick storyline: Rachel has been called to what appears to be anoverdose death. Question is ... is it just that? Especially when the deceased has an item on body that Rachel recognizes. The case gets complicated because partner has possible ties to case and is the past coming back or is Rachel reading to much into this.

This book has so many twists and turns that you are going to fall into the rabbit warren. I did. Wonderful job! You got me.

You have done a phenomenal job pulling multiple plotlines to a fantastic ending.

I really like the characters of Bishop, Jimmy, and Savannah. I am just hoping that the ending of the book is just what it says, and not what I think it could be.

Keep it up and write the next one fast because I cannot wait!!! No patience for this series. I WANT IT NOW!!!!

Great fantastic read. Can be read as a standalone. Hard to put down, so don't start it at bedtime like I did.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

I might have rated this more highly for the story and the characters. However, the side story of people thinking Rachel is gay because of her appearance and behavior was bad enough as is, but even worse to read about how she changed her appearance and behavior. Having people think she was a lesbian was worse to her than staying true to herself. That whole situation was unnecessary to the plot/character development and just left me feeling like the author wrote Rachel to be anti-gay. If that’s what she wanted, successful. If that wasn’t the intent, why write it like that?!

As much as I loved the first book, I almost dnf’d this one. It just didn’t flow as well as the first one. There was so much going on and at times felt jumbled. I had a hard time being invested in the outcome and the characters. With that being said, I’m not giving up on this author and/or series. It wasn’t the worst that I’ve read but when comparing to book 1 and other books in this genre, this latest installment was just average for me.

Thank you #netgalley and #severnriverpublishing for the eARC.

🌟Recently finished reading the book HUNTED GIRL by CAROLYN RIDDER ASPENSON, this is the second draft in the "RACHEL RYDER SERIES" and as the first one this one also has same amount of suspense and thrill. The mystery is amazing and will keep you guessing till the end but you can't predict anything. The storyline is amazing with intriguing plot and you won't be able to put it down once you start reading.🌟

💫Plot-
✨The plot revolves around the RACHEL RYDER and a psycho killer who is murdering the people in the town, and after every incident he left a clue for Rachel to investigate. Rachel was samrt and tough and she investigates the case with her instincts but this time her emotions overpowers her instincts as he past begins to haunt her and she was certain that someone is targeting her to seek revenge. She was trying her best but can't find the killer and the number of murders was increasing and there were lives at stake. Now she has to risk everything and find the killer to stop these murders✨✨✨✨.

💫Writing-
✨The writing has been brilliant by the author and you will barely find any loophole in the plot. Almost all the things are just perfect and blended very well. The character of Rachel was introduced in first part but it has been explored more in this one and has been done nicely. The language is easy and the narration has been top notch. The book is fast paced and once you start reading it you would finish it off for sure. The description is the such that you can feel a suspense thriller movie is running in front of your eyes. The scenes and locations were amazing and gives you the vibe of a murder mystery. With its amazing storyline and intriguing plot the book is a perfect treat to murder mystery lovers.✨✨✨✨

💫 I enjoyed it thoroughly and i would also recommend it to you if you like this genre

**This is an honest review in return for receiving a NetGalley ARC**

This series is like TV crime shows fused to a page - the plot is driven, unpredictable and easily devoured. With a strong female lead, it provides a great idea of what small-town crime fighting might look like when mixed with drug cartels and revenge.

I read the first book of this series to better acquaint myself with the characters and events in order to be prepared to read and analyze Hunted Girl. I was not disappointed.

Carolyn writes her characters extremely well, creating three-dimensional personalities for not only the leads, but also to the supporting roles. I felt like I could understand what they were feeling, and most reactions and interactions felt very believable. She displayed controversial subjects involving gender equality, PTSD, grief, rage and deep emotional turmoil.

I enjoyed the plot - it took me out of the predictable police drama and into a web of revenge. It was difficult to separate the two plotlines, allowing for genuine shock at discovering how the puzzle pieces fit together.

This is a perfect read that wants their crime fix without being glued to a screen. Very well written and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Even though this book is the second in the series I throughly enjoyed it. Rachel starts a new job in a new town after what happened in Chicago but instead of thinking that she will have a easy job it's not b/c much to her surprise her past has followed her. Rachel and her partner come across what they think is normal OD but it is deeper than that. Her past is catching up to her but she isn't quite sure who it is even though she has an idea. The case becomes personal because dead bodies keep on popping up with the same MO but she can't get the puzzle put together quick enough. On top of everything her workers thinks she isn't interested in men and of course there are people that just don't like her until she proves them otherwise. When her partner's best friends brother is murdered it is no very personal and goes completely downhill from there. I found the characters believable and well rounded for being detectives. The best about the book there are really no lose ends. Highly recommend this book to anyone that likes are good police story. Thank you to Severn River Publishing for this ARC

Ms. Aspenson has followed up her first book in the series with an outstanding second case for Detective Rachel Ryder. Rachel is slowly getting used to life in Georgia, but Georgia is not quite used to her. Both Rachel and her husband were detectives, in Chicago, when he was murdered. She killed the shooter while the corrupt commissioner who planned the murder was sentenced to prison. At the scene of a drug overdose a strange necklace is found on the body, one that Rachel had last seen on the man who killed her husband. Has her husband’s murder case followed her to Georgia? As more bodies are found with a necklace, she knows this is a sign…to her. Her partner Bishop still doesn’t believe this is about Rachel, but her gut tells her it does. She learns that the commissioner was released from prison; is he working with the local drug dealers to get his revenge? When Rachel is attacked, who will survive the final confrontation? A non-stop police investigation led by a gutsy and persistent female detective. Loved it! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Book 2 is a continuation of Rachel Ryder’s struggles with the death of her husband and working with a new partner, Rob Bishop. Although book 2 is a standalone, if you haven’t read book 1, you miss the background information about Rachel. As they come across a dead homeless man, it leads them in discovering that prints from Bishop’s family friend are found at the scene. The narrative is great, setting the scene and helping to further develop the characters’ personalities. Rachel has a great attitude and spunk. The mystery itself is twofold, the murders possibly connected to Rachel and Bishop and her still dealing with the death of her husband. The investigation is filled with pitfalls, unexpected twists, multiple motives and surprises that keep you glued right to the end. This is an emotional thriller, where lives are exploded and perceptions are twisted and shattered! Look forward to the next book in the series.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

OMG, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Rachel Ryder Series!

This is book #2 of the Rachel Ryder series. I have read the 2 books within 48 hours. I cannot wait to read book #3!!!! Carolyn Ridder Aspenson has done a fabulous job creating characters to cheer on thru the entire book. Rachel is a feisty high energy detective that will not let anyone or anything get in her way to find the truth in any situation. She highly believes in upholding the law and will stop at nothing until she gets to that truth and apprehends her suspect! In this story Rachel’s past come to haunt her. The man that was responsible for killing her husband was released from jail. Quickly bodies started piling up and sidle messages were sent to Rachel. She was convinced that the messages were for her and only her. Is her gut correct? Is her past coming after her in the small town that she moved to after her husband’s death? You will have to read to find out! This book and series is Well worth reading! I am HOOKED!!

I was thoroughly engrossed in this fast-paced and intriguing mystery, and had a very hard time putting it down to get an appropriate night’s sleep. Since I live in the Atlanta area, being familiar with so many of the places mentioned made me feel even more invested in the story and its outcome. Rachel is a likable and extremely driven character, and I enjoyed the relationship she had with her partner Bishop. I read the first book in the series, and it was nice seeing how the respect and trust between them grew from when they first became partners. There were some very heartbreaking and sad situations in the book, and the language was a bit harsher than I prefer, but the likable characters, the suspense, and the very satisfying conclusion balanced it all out to make it a very enjoyable read overall. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author through SRP Mystery and Thriller Books, and have given my voluntary and honest opinion.

It is still a good book but the second book you see Rachel a bit more clearly. It is a little weak on her moving and going to work for a small police dept to fulfill her husband's dream. This comes up in other books - do the bad guys really need to follow a cop they don't like who moved multiple states away.
“I accepted the call. “What!” I waited for a telemarketer named Brian to tell me my extended warranty had expired and he could solve all my problems, but all I got was heavy breathing. “Hell-o?” The breathing continued, so I clicked off the call and blocked the number.” She is a cop and had literally just given her card with her cell number to someone she hoped would call her with more info - makes no sense.

““I’m fucking straight, you assholes!” so angry all the time

““Already have, and Joey’s already on it.” “Your tech guy.” “Yes. If these two are using new identities, he’ll be able to find out.””

This was another story that pulled me in and definitely held my attention for all of the hours that I was reading it. I literally did not put the book down for almost 7 straight hours. Rachel Ryder and Rob take the central parts in this newest book, but there are friends of both that make strong and deeply moving appearances in this book. As things move from one murder to another they are both called upon to take some deep looks into their own psyches and perhaps reevaluate some preconceived emotions. I thought this was a very well written and well edited book and as I said, I did enjoy the storyline. I am looking forward to the next book and the next phase in these two detectives careers.

I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary, honest, and completely personal review.

Detective Rachel Ryder is a strong female character in this police procedural mystery. A former detective in the Chicago area, Rachel has seen more than enough dead bodies than most of the detectives in the small Georgia town where she now serves as detective in the small police force.  When the body of a homeless man turns up it first looked like a standard drug overdose, but when her partner's family friend's prints are found at the scene, it becomes apparent this is more complicated than it initially seemed. This book deals with issues of homelessness, drug addiction, and how it affects the innocent family members. There is also a twist to the plot when ties to Rachel's husband's murder in Chicago keep showing up, sending her a clear message her past is catching up with her. This series is suspenseful, and a page turner leaving me wanting more.

This is one of the easiest reviews I’ve ever written. I’ll say up front that I loved this book! This author normally writes paranormal mysteries and this series is a departure from that. Rachel Ryder has a lot of flaws and doubts, but she always keeps her strong moral values. The first book in the series introduced her and gave her background. This book builds on her background by having the man responsible for her husband’s death get out of prison and make good on his threat to hunt her down and make her pay for his imprisonment. Rachel is on a major emotional roller coaster. I love how she handles the ‘good ole boys’ she works with. I won’t dish up any spoilers, but this book held my interest from the first sentence to the last. I received this book as an ARC, but that doesn’t affect my review. I genuinely loved this book!

Carolyn Ridder Aspenson has written numerous books and multiple series. This is the second of three newly released Detective Rachel Ryder adventures. Having not encountered Aspenson’s previous body of work, a new smart, tough, and fearless female protagonist was welcomed with much anticipation. Beginning with a routine overdose investigation, the body count mounts and connections to Ryder’s past revealed. Feisty detective Ryder has attitude and an unwillingness not to pursue a case when her hunch is ignored. A new hero and a worthy read with a three-and-a-half-star rating. With thanks to NetGalley and the author for a preview copy for review purposes. All opinions expressed herein are freely given and totally my own.

I’m enjoying this series, even more than the others by this author, and I do really like those. This series has suspense and intrigue, and emotion, and Rachel is this tough, determined woman, who fights for what she believes in.

This particular story had Rachel fighting demons from her past. It was a tough case, personal to more than just Rachel. It was difficult to figure out how it all fit together, causing Rachel and Bishop to keep questioning themselves.

I do like the characters in this series - serious when it counts, but also with sarcastic and fun sides, and I liked getting see the emotional side of Rachel crack through.

A great series, and that ending makes me wish the next book was out now!

Detective Rachel Ryder and her partner Rob Bishop, are called to ad overdosed death in a park, to dot all “i” it will have to be investigated, but it looks pretty straight forward. Bishop’s best friend’s brother shows up dead and he is a link to the dead body in the park, … things are starting to line up and is Rachel’s Chicago days catching up with her?
Totally loved booked 2 in this series, it flowed just as a well as the first, and it leaves you wanting for more! I really enjoyed how the characters have evolved since book 2, the trust between the partners.

Haunted by her past

Hamby, Georgia is a long way from Chicago and Detective Rachel Ryder is still getting used to the slower pace but at least she is far away from the daily reminders of her husband’s murder. When she and her partner, Detective Rob Bishop, respond to the apparent overdose of a long time addict Ryder finds evidence that may somehow link the case to her husband’s murder and a criminal who has promised vengeance.

This is a well-written, solid crime thriller. There are good character interactions, suspense, and the plot is very believable. Anyone who enjoys crime thrillers should read this book. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

I have not read the first book in the Rachel Ryder series but I plan to remedy that soon. I love Rachel. She is a badass detective from the gritty streets of Chicago transplanted to a small southern town after the death of her husband. She is flawed but wonderful, with a mouth that is going to get her in trouble one day. Something about the body in the park reminds her of her past, and then the dead start piling up. I read this book in one sitting. It was nonstop action with great character, good dialog, and a good and believable plot. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an early copy. I plan to read more of your work.

Drug Dealers and Dead People
This book is the second in a series. While it can be read alone, the reader will get more enjoyment by reading the series in order. This book contains violence and implied violence and rough language. It also involves the tough situations that a police detective would likely be involved in like severe drug addiction and prostitution. The book is an excellent follow-up to book one. Bad stuff is happening and it is tough to tell which bad guy is behind which crime. Some of the story arc completes in this book as a new story arc begins.
I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.

The past and the people Rachel had been running from came to haunt her in the small town she currently lives. She also feels that she does no fit in the social settings designed for women in the south and suffers from prejudice from her co-workers because of the way she behaves, talks, and dresses. But beware, reader, here she comes and turns everything upside down, finds and works against a chain of criminals with the help of her partners (both the previous and the actual ones). The plot is well constructed, believable, the language flows, and the story keeps the reader very entertained till the end.
