Truths We Confess #1

Truths We Confess - Volume 1: A Layman's Guide to the Westminster Confession of Faith: The Triune God

Rate this book
In his three-volume exposition of the Westminster Confession of Faith, R.C. Sproul writes with both insight into current issues and clarity for lay readers. The resulting commentary will long serve the church as an invaluable aid for digesting and teaching the eternal truths of Scripture. This first volume (of three), covering chapters 1?8 of the confession, explains what we need to understand about Holy Scripture, God and the Trinity, his decree, creation, providence, the fall into sin, God's covenant, and Christ the Mediator. Every discussion is geared toward bringing us to a deeper knowledge of and greater love for the doctrines of grace set forth in God's Word.

Dr. R.C. Sproul (1939–2017) was founder of Ligonier Ministries, an international Christian discipleship organization located near Orlando, Fla. He was founding pastor of Saint Andrew’s Chapel in Sanford, Fla., first president of Reformation Bible College, and executive editor of Tabletalk magazine.

Ligonier Ministries began in 1971 as the Ligonier Valley Study Center in Ligonier, Pa. In an effort to respond more effectively to the growing demand for Dr. Sproul’s teachings and the ministry’s other educational resources, the general offices were moved to Orlando in 1984, and the ministry was renamed.

Dr. Sproul’s radio program, Renewing Your Mind, is still broadcast daily on hundreds of radio stations around the world and can also be heard online. Dr. Sproul produced hundreds of lecture series and recorded numerous video series on subjects such as the history of philosophy, theology, Bible study, apologetics, and Christian living.

He contributed dozens of articles to national evangelical publications, spoke at conferences, churches, and academic institutions around the world, and wrote more than one hundred books, including The Holiness of God, Chosen by God, and Everyone’s a Theologian. He signed the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy and wrote a commentary on that document. He also served as general editor of the Reformation Study Bible, previously known as the New Geneva Study Bible.

Dr. Sproul had a distinguished academic teaching career at various colleges and seminaries, including Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and Jackson, Miss. He was ordained as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America.

Very good introduction to the fundamental aspects of reformed theology with modern and readable commentary. Very interesting content if a little dry at times. Worth reading for anyone with an interest specifically in reformed theology, but I think authors like Keller and Lewis are much more readable and approachable for the non-reformed layman.

Excellent layman's look at the WCF. Three volumes is a bit much for most study groups, but these books will repay a close reading. As with any exposition that vastly exceeds the word count of the original document, there are readings that go beyond what the Confession states, sometimes for the good (six-day creation) and sometimes not so much (depending on Mendenhall/Kline re:CoW/merit), but no one does as good a job as RC at explaining doctrine in a relatable, engaging way at the adult Sunday School level.

Some good insights from the king of popular Calvinism. Great beginner's guide to the Westminster Confession of Faith from a man who has spent nearly his whole life trying to defend its theology. I would take issue with some of his points throughout, but overall, it looks like it will be a good series.

This was such a powerful and well researched book that I've added this to my "to purchase" wishlist. I had so many pages that I badly wanted to mark up in this library book and make the book mine.

This was better than I thought it would be...a very careful and thorough look at the truths of Christianity. I highly recommend.
