The Horror is Us

"What a perfectly balanced, well-curated batch of stories. The horrors that torment real people living ordinary lives are vividly on display here, as well as a fresh handful of supernatural tricks and treats. A short read to keep us awake for a long while."
—Katharine Coldiron, author of Ceremonials

The Horror is Us is an anthology about monsters and the monstrous things that grow from us—individually and together. It examines the horrors we experience and put each other through. The authors within this creeping collection demonstrate an eye for taking our world and adjusting the picture of it until we can see the gleaming teeth that were always there. A mix of killers, the supernatural, and everyday fears play out in these short stories that blend the aesthetics of slasher films, ghost stories, campfire tales, and thrillers. The Horror is Us gives a view into other people’s fears and asks us to feel that fear with them.

This is an extraordinary collection of some of the best uses of the horror genre to dig a little deeper into psyches, cultures, relationships. There's the eternal love of a witch's black cat, vengeance with a side of raw meat, an enthusiastic but out-of-work butcher, two sisters stuck in the basement of a haunted house with their drunk father, and the menace of black metal-listening white supremacist cops.

The stories are varied in tone and style, but come together to form a rich tapestry of innovative, creative, surprising stories. Highly recommend for anyone who's enjoyed LOVECRAFT COUNTRY or any other horror that uses the elements of genre to explore difficult, dangerous, challenging materials.
