4.5 stars. Wow, I was honestly just gearing up for a standard haunting story. And in some ways it was, but holy Santa Claus shit, did Hash Black create something totally unique and unexpected. There was a pretty big swerve towards the latter part of the story, but it was a pleasant surprise. Was Beth, our lead, being tricked by someone nearby in this new neighborhood? Where was Lily? What is with that haunted mirror and the hallucinations? Again, I was not prepared for what it turned in, but it was solid. The author went really big. But I enjoyed pretty much everything here. Black created some great characters and lore, and put a creative spin on it all. And it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, with an adequate length. Lily, Beth’s daughter, reminded me so much of my daughter, too. All the funny, blunt comments she would make made me reminisce of my Melody. She always finds new ways to make me embarrassed or shocked. But that’s what kids are supposed to do, right? I was a little smart ass when I was her age, so I’m glad that the bloodline still runs strong. Anyway, I had a great time here and can’t wait to see Hash Black’s other offerings.

Mirror mirror is a fast paced horror novella that played on two of my deepest fears...haunted houses and something bad happening to one of my children. Oh and now I have an irrational fear of mirrors too.... lovely. 😂

Overall this was a fabulously spooky and quick read. Although short the characters and storyline were well developed. I really enjoyed this take on a classic horror trope: The haunted house/Poltergeist story. While not a new concept it still felt fresh and I was HERE FOR IT from start to finish.

Thank you again Hash Black for reaching out to me. It was truly a pleasure reading this and I cant wait to read more from you in the future! This book defintely left me wanting more from you.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Where do I start with this one? I really wanted to like this book, but honestly, it was terrible. The storyline was okay, but the writing was really choppy, filled with short sentences that just didn't flow. It felt like a child's writing (The man was called Ben. Ben wore a blue shirt. He didn't like the blue shirt.) There were a lot of spelling and grammatical errors that also disrupted the flow of the story for me. The overuse of the word "um" when one of the characters was talking bugged me sooo much. If you have an 8 word sentence and 4 of those words are um, it's too much. The way characters spoke annoyed me too. No one talks like that. It was like in those movies where aliens are pretending to be human and just throw every word they've ever heard into one conversation.
I don't know why I finished this one tbh, maybe I was hoping the ending would be enough to redeem the rest of the book. It wasn't.
The cover is cool, though, so there's that.

When a new author to me asks if I’d like to read their new book? Answer is Yes!! If you follow my reviews you know I love ghost stories and I am all excited to say, this story has it all!

Beth and her daughter Lily, after the death of her husband make a new start in a new community and new home hoping to find some peace as Beth is ready to start a new job at the local hospital.

Well this house has other ideas as it’s the haunted house of the century according to the locals. The site of a horrific fire that took 2 lives and then the subsequent kidnapping of young Ben, the second inhabitants of the haunted house.

Beth, unaware of the house’s history begins to experience odd things happening especially when it comes to the mirrors in the home, cracks, sounds, mysterious cats start appearing then one horrible night, Lily is pulled through the mirror and a count down starts.

No spoilers. Beth and Lily are befriend early on by Dr. Mark who in the beginning seems the innocent neighbor who becomes a romantic interest for Beth. He’s interaction with the family does raise some concerns as we know nothing really about him or his history with these supernatural events. His character is the most difficult to nail down and that makes the story all that more creepy.

The haunted spirits of the house raise enough chaos, blood and gore to satisfy any genre reader and the “hold your breath” ending was intense!

Highly recommended to everyone that loves a fantastic poltergeist type haunting with a twist. Your 24 hours start now. Enjoy!

recieved this book as a blind book purchase from etsy. i had high hopes going in, but there were a few major problems i had with the book.

first and foremost, the book is awkwardly worded to the absolute max. dialogue is clunky and weird (seriously, what six year old child talks like that?), and descriptions of both people and actions felt strange and unnatural, hindering the flow of the book and giving the reader pause.

secondly, there's a seemingly random romantic subplot that drives a good amount of this story. the dynamic between beth and mark is rushed at best, and incredibly creepy and gross at worst. plus, there's too much forced nakedness. way too much.

lastly, the plot itself is just fine. the mystery of the ghost and the hallucinations and the missing child. the stakes were present, but the stilted, exaggerated unhelpfulness of every character in the town felt frustrating and did nothing to support the plot. and the final confrontation had a twist, but it was hindered by the racial slur used to describe the secondary antagonist for multiple pages.

*Disclaimer – I received free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

The Mirror is a novella that follows a grieving widow as she moves into a new house, and hopefully a new life with her young daughter. Unfortunately, this new house has a dark past and an even darker entity inhabiting it and it’s reflective surfaces. Drawing on themes of painful secrets that refuse to be forgotten, repressed evils, and a mother’s love for her daughter, the story deals with heavy subject matters.

Unfortunately the pacing of the story is off. The entire work spans only a couple of days, and yet it seems only in the first hour or so of our main protagonist moving to this new town and still grieving the loss of her husband, she has no qualms falling in love with a brand new doctor who quite literally falls into her yard. Not only does this short span of time make some of the events feel unreal, but the backstory of the ghostly haunting going on was very difficult to fully believe as well – without any spoilers, the events of the town’s past just didn’t make sense and so the tragedy and darkness there didn’t have the impact that it should have. I did have to read the story twice to get the events straight in my head.

There are some good scares and descriptive passages of the dark entities that have stolen our main characters daughter. The psychological aspects of the scares were a plus for me.

The Mirror is a fast paced paranormal horror that just needed more space for the story to breath.

I’ve not been snapped into a horror novel so quickly in a long time! There was moments of silence and then absolute shock! This is one horror book that is going to set (or unsettle) with me for a while.

A few grammatical errors that are quickly overlooked because the story is so fast-paced and well told.

For fans of horror reading I highly recommend this book!

I knew I didn't like mirrors

I really enjoyed this book. . .it was a quick read and a good read and I will never look at mirrors quite the same. I like the idea of covering them up.
