Respawn #6

The Last Crossing

Rate this book
At first, stories of Cheater caused nothing but laughter and rolled eyes.
As the months went on, however, the tales became more terrific—and more terrifying. Now, Cheater the Lovestruck Loser has become Cheater the Lucky Legend. He never misses. He can never be held captive. And his luck never runs out.

In pursuit of his love, his inexorable progress eastward leaves a trail of story upon story and corpse upon corpse. Any enemy standing in his way is soon reduced to a stain of blood and black dust on Cheater’s boots.

Only one crossing sits between him and his destination. Between him and his soulmate. He is anxious to complete his journey immediately, but his companions seem to stall at every opportunity. Has he been wrong to trust them? Will they abandon or betray him before the end?

For some, this perilous campaign will cost them their lives. For others, the cost may be greater still.

A rather disappointing conclusion to the series. Overall, this book didn't really need to exist - it didn't add much to the overall story arc and the elements of closure that it brings to the series could have easily been incorporated into book 5.

Much like a professional quarterback who plays just one or two seasons too long, this series was a bit long in the tooth as well.

The closure wasn't all that great, either. Yes, major plot elements were wrapped up, but...not very tightly or neatly. The author clearly left an opening for future installments if he so chose, however.

Overall: meh.

Great read

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was a one sitting read. Very gripping and action filled LitRPG story.

Love this series!

I honestly can't say what draws me to this. Right now this is my favorite series. None captured me like this. Not J. Butcher, not B. Sanderson, no other LitRPG. Really. I am 200+ books so far this year (as of OCT 2020) and for some reason Cheater and Kitty get me. Every damn time. I will stop reading another series just for this. Same as W. Wright, but this one. More. I really can't say anything other than that. More. Please.

I can’t tell if this is the last book of the series but the ending isn’t satisfying like usual! There should be another book or chapter of them together or using the loot/wining the game

The Last Crossing (Respawn, #6) by Arthur Stone:

The Last Crossing by Arthur Stone marks the sixth installment in the Respawn series, promising readers another thrilling adventure in the world of reincarnation and second chances. While the premise remains intriguing, the execution in this particular installment falls short of expectations, resulting in a narrative that struggles to captivate and engage.

Stone's writing style maintains its consistency, with clear prose and descriptive language that attempts to immerse readers in the world of The Last Crossing. However, the narrative lacks the depth and sophistication needed to truly captivate.

In this book, readers continue to follow the protagonist as they embark on yet another reincarnation, this time in a world teetering on the brink of destruction. While the concept is promising, the plot feels formulaic and predictable, with little in the way of surprises or unexpected twists.

The world-building in this installment is minimal, with little expansion on the rules and mechanics of reincarnation or the larger setting in which the story takes place. This lack of depth hampers the reader's immersion in the world and detracts from the overall experience.

Moreover, the character development in The Last Crossing feels lacking, with the protagonist failing to undergo significant growth or evolution throughout the narrative. The relationships between characters also feel underdeveloped, robbing the story of emotional depth and resonance.

When compared to its contemporaries in the reincarnation and fantasy genres, such as Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore or The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North, The Last Crossing falls short in terms of depth and complexity. While these works offer thought-provoking explorations of the themes of life, death, and destiny, Stone's novel feels shallow and underdeveloped, relying too heavily on the novelty of its premise rather than meaningful storytelling.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)

The Last Crossing (Respawn, #6) fails to live up to the potential of its premise, offering a lackluster and uninspired continuation of the series. While it may satisfy some readers' curiosity about the fate of the protagonist, it ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression in a genre filled with more compelling offerings.

Slightly less interesting than the rest in terms of mechanics.

This sixth - and apparently last - book of the Respawn series did a lot of re-use of mechanics, not introducing any significant feature or anything. And while it had some interesting characters, the entire setup reuses most of the previous characters, situations, and objectives.

Still, it has to be noted that it does, indeed, wrap up the major underlying arc and motivation of the main character. Of course, our star-crossed lovers almost insult each other and the like, but that's on par for the genre in Russian litrpg. The series remain very much open, but M. Stone has indicated in an answer that this is indeed the last of the Respawn series for the foreseeable future. So, while we can lament the lack of further Continent shenanigans, the series itself does provide closure, which is very, very rare in the litrpg world.

I've just finished the entire Respawn series, books 1-6 and I really enjoyed them. I listened to the audiobook while I was at work and found the entire idea of a character having multiple lives VERY interesting! Every time our character Rock/Rocky/Cheater died he would learn from his mistakes and always make his death come at a cost to his enemies. I really wish the book had continued into a 7th book, there are so many places this story could go however I understand why it didn't because this isn't the sort of story that could really end anywhere. Thanks very much Arthur Stone for writing something so interesting!(I'll copy and paste this review on all 6 books.)

Hot damn!

I love this series. It is easily my favorite series by Arthur Stone. I have to say for the most part each book is better than the one previous, though book 5 might actually be better than book 6. Just a teeny bit better.

I do have questions about the connection between this series and the Hivecat series. They seem like the same world but there are a few key differences. Hey Arthur, any comments about those differences? I've looked online for information about this topic but found nothing.

Anyway, I can't wait for the next installment.

It's truly painful how stupid this man is. I could bear being friends with or on a team with him, but the idea of an intelligent, competent woman being able to tolerate his stupidity and form an emotional attachment is too far fetched.

The only case it would make sense is if she's just looking for a powerful f***-toy simpleton that she can control like a marianett. Also, what a horrible end to the series. It's criminal so many books were spent on this dullard, instead of finishing things off with a book or two of them reunited.

Book six

Mistakes: I found a handful of mistakes scattered throughout this book. Nothing that really threw me from the story.

Plot: So close to getting back to his girl, but this trip may just be his toughest yet.
I enjoy lost of loot collecting and this book just doesn't have that.

Characters: There are characters to both like and dislike in this book. The MC seems to have yet another personality change, almost whiny this time around.

East Coast

Cheater gets lucky. His dedication and persistence finally pays off as he enters the last stretch for the Eastern cluster. Aside from grammatical errors this was a quick and fun read. I love they way their (March, Clown, Cheater) notoriety has grown. Let’s see if that carries over to the new zone.

Amazing Book (Is this the last I’m the series?)

Awesome continuation of the series. Is this the last book? (please say no) This is probably my favourite series in the LITRPG genre it really gets gritty in places and you are on edge for all the characters thinking they might die or betray but always hoping they will win.

Good to have the primary story arc end. I loved the action and how Cheater keeps pushing the envelope practically breaking the system. I really wish this wasn't the final boo though it feels like it could continue easily. I'm not sure if Arthur Stone plans to continue the series but it would be cool to get the team together to form the perfect world for themselves.

What is next

Good continuation to the story slightly OP but not too much. Want to see what happens with Cheater and his lobbies dovvie next. And maybe in the tank they finally get it on - that would be a show. Invite Chief of Nolds too. Might be fun

I chose this rating because you really have to enjoy a series to make it to book Six. I really like the concept of this game like story. It's kinda spooky too.
