At some point during our development as a species, we experienced a huge shift in the paradigm of existence; from living in harmony with the planet and all its wealth, to fighting against those same things that should bring us peace and harmony.Ultimately, the fight turned against us.It didn't take long for humanity to transform the world we live in entirely. We have developed a general state of detachment that only draws us further apart and encourages us to be more disconnected from ourselves and our surroundings. It may come as no surprise then, that almost half of the adult population experience one or more forms of mental illness in their lifetime. It is even less surprising that the more we indulge in this detachment from ourselves, the more that number increases. This hasn't always been the case, however. For a very long time, Eastern philosophy held the key to our wellbeing and with the right tools, we can now easily uncover their secrets for a better life.If you want to heal yourself from within and discover your unlimited potential, then Scroll Down and discover more about Modern Chakra!

while the information was all there - phrases like 'this might all sound a bit girly' put me right off.

The book is very touching and honours the idea of becoming more in tune with yourself while also giving you practical tips on how you might go about doing so. I liked that it focused more on actions than just theory. It spoke to me because it was full of practical advice on practising Eastern philosophy in your everyday life, which I found very easy to relate to. The author starts by using examples from modern culture which are easily understood but not overly simplified. The book goes on to give details on how each chakra affects daily performance and what one can do about it even if they feel like their chakras are out of balance or even closed down completely (which occurs for many due to detachment, stress, anxiety etc).

The Sanskrit word "Chakra" which literally translates to spinning wheel is a term used in Hinduism and Buddhism that was born from a belief in invisible energy or force that permeates our being but isn't synonymous with religious practice in the sense of worshipping a God in order to gain favour. These wheels can be seen as bridges between our material existence and spiritual place. It's also been described as the powers our life have. Allowing us to do things humans wouldn't normally be capable of doing if they didn't possess it.

This book was, to put it simply, it is fantastic!

Chakras for Beginners or Long-Time Practitioners

I have been working with chakras for over 30 years as a Reiki master, so this book intrigued me when I saw it at one of my favorite review sites. I found it an immensely enjoyable read, though I did find a few issues with it. As you might expect, it begins with a description of what chakras are and what it means when they are blocked, balanced, or overactive/underactive. She discusses different ways to work with the chakras in general, like with mantras, visualization, meditation, and incorporating astrology, crystals, yoga, and aromatherapy. While I've studied astrology for over 35 years, I had never seen another chakra book that incorporated it. I found that section quite fascinating (though I wish she included the chakra associations in the planet list at the end so I didn’t have to flip back and forth). I've also worked with crystals for a long time, but I'm always interested in seeing other practitioner’s use of them. While I don't do yoga or use aromatherapy, I found those sections fascinating as well. If you are a true newbie to chakras, you will most likely find this book helpful because the author states and reiterates what each chakra means throughout all the sections of the book. This does not come across as repetitive but rather as refining knowledge regarding a specific practice or use.

As a longtime Reiki master, I do have quibbles with her brief Reiki section. The author states, “While you don’t need to be religious in any way, you do need to be dedicated to seeing improvements in yourself. You also need to commit yourself to a virtuous life, so respectful, honest, and kind.” While improving yourself and being respectful, honest, and kind is lovely to do for yourself and others, you do NOT need to do so to incorporate Reiki into any practice or into your life. If you believe in the law of attraction and the abundance of the universe, Reiki has a similar concept. Reiki simply exists in the universe and can be drawn down by any person who has been trained to do so regardless of your level of personal improvement or perceived “virtuousness.” Reiki helps everyone and everything. A deeper study of Reiki will reveal the Reiki Ideals and other philosophies that were given to us by the original Reiki Masters, including Usui. But that does not mean that you have to be virtuous or “improved” to benefit from Reiki. You will benefit from it regardless of whether you are or not. Because of this error, I do find myself questioning if there are other such mistakes in the other subjects that I do not know as much about, like yoga and aromatherapy. I suggest following her practices but not always believing the informational aspects of the other topics.

The other quibble I had with the book was that it stated that Native Americans believe that Mount Shasta is the equivalent of the root chakra for the planet Earth. Native Americans cannot be seen as one entire homogeneous group that has a single opinion! There are different tribes all over the United States and Canada. Perhaps the local Indians around Mount Shasta found it to be an energy center that we would equate with the meanings of the root chakra, but that doesn't mean that *all* Native Americans see it as such.

Despite these quibbles, I do think this is a great book for chakra beginners as well as those who have been working with them for a while as this author does share techniques and insights that may not be familiar even to those who have been working with them for a long time.

Insightful and helpful

I really enjoyed this book on opening your inner chakras for deeper understanding and healing. It covers everything from mantras, yoga, meditation, reiki and crystals with the history and practical applications. I did not know much about how to use crystals so this was helpful. It was well written and gave practical uses as well.

Great Book for a Novice

Only familiar from a distance of the chants, mantras, and crystals. This book introduced me to the true understanding of what the chakra is and how to use it in my daily existence.

I was expecting a train wreck. Spiritual practice is difficult to communicate about, even without the difficulty of talking across cultures. And I have read a few well intentioned books written by white people that have been… mildly harmful, at best?

This book is not a train wreck. It’s earnest, and from a western perspective, but it’s also cautious where caution is warranted and has at least some idea of the boundaries between the things that happen in the (as of yet) unprovable field of the mind, and things that happen in the physical. It even seems as if there is some deep understanding of the way that visualizations are merely ways of interacting with the energies present, rather than being somehow a true vision of the energies themselves. The moon hand problem. So, not bad.

Other things I appreciate; emphasis upon simple tones as mantras rather than full mantras in the vedic sense. So much safer, and less likely to cause interaction with some stray creature of the mind that way. An understanding that lots of essential oils are trash, and some crystals break down in water, is well conveyed as well. It’s an essential point, for safety's sake.

Traditional practitioners will bristle at the ‘choose your own’ process the author suggests, but most of the people who this is aimed at do not have the choice of many temples to visit and enjoy. It’s well aimed advice, in the field she is shooting into. Nothing here will be a revelation to people with a practice, but nothing here is harmful, and that's not bad at all.

A lot of good information in here, but terrible writing. I don’t think the author had an editor and it shows.

"Modern Chakra is a nonfiction book written by Verda Harper. The main focus of this book is to teach readers about chakras and how they work. In addition, this text also discusses the history of the chakra system as well as some uses for them in modern times.

Chakras are centers of energy located throughout the body, which support health on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. These Chakras determine a person's state of being or consciousness at any given time. They also have both positive and negative effects on health depending on their location and primary function within the body. Important concepts such as karma, Taoism were introduced along with an explanation of these theories from Indian culture as it relates to Chakras.

The book is very easy to read and understand and is perfect for anyone who is new to the subject."
