Ghost House

Everyone believes Tommy's best friend died in a terrible accident. Only Tommy knows that it wasn't an accident at all. He made a drunken mistake he can never take back. And now he's haunted, literally. It sounds nuts, and sometimes Tommy is not sure if he is nuts. It doesn't seem to matter too much until he meets Suki.

Ghost House
(Soul Mate #1)
by Richard Crawford
This is a terrific ghost story where our guy of the story gets possessed by ghosts (1 or 2) and he is at the mercy of what they want to do. Having friends, jobs, or any kind of life is nearly impossible! This is his story and it is exciting and terrifying but even some of the ghosts you find have a sad story. Excellent!

I'm having to review my personal policy on first person, first-tense reads - they used to irritate the daylights out of me.

When I realised this was in that format I thought I'd be switching to another book after a chapter. Instead, this story kept me up late and nearly made me miss my stop twice.

I've seen the lower rated reviews on this book; but have to say it's one of the best I've read in a while; for me the characters were rich, detailed and pretty entertaining.

Tommy is a man haunted by guilt, in more ways than one. Dangerous as his situation is , it's about to get a whole lot worse.

I can't give too much away without going into spoilers, but can say this is a very intense, character-driven read, and a great twist on the ghost tale. Some heavy language and a bunch of scenes that will have your heart in your mouth wondering what will happen next.

Highly recommended.

This was one of those books that twisted and wormed around in my mind when I wasn't actively reading it. The mechanics of Tommy's possession by ghosts was psychologically terrifying, yet at the same time riveting. Honestly, what if your body was commandeered and you were nothing more than a spectator while a spirit with nothing to lose (because they've already suffered the ultimate fate) toted you along for the ride while it carried out some agenda you have no access to and no control over? Genius concept.

The story flowed well, I liked being part of the many ghost stories, and I was almost as mortified and regretful as Tommy every time he fumbled another interaction with Suki.

What's Jess's story? Would like to learn more about her and how she has a spidy sense for the evil in people. Just found out there is a book two. Will definitely be making a purchase.

3 ½ stars

I fretted a bit over rating and reviewing this very interesting and original paranormal novel about a young man haunted by a secret, an addiction and real ghosts. Because half stars aren’t possible and there are a number of things I really liked about this enjoyable story, I upped my star rating to a 4.

As the story begins, Tommy, homeless and near broke, is being taken into the police station for what the cops believe was drunken behavior. It soon becomes evident that his conduct is not – or is not always or is not solely – due to his drinking problem. Instead, Tommy is in what seems a bit of an inescapable circle: his drinking has led to a terrible accident; the guilt he bears for this secret intensifies his desire to drink, as does the fact the accident has led to him being plagued by ghosts; and these ghosts’ invasion of both his body and his mind only elevates further his need to dull the insanity with more drink. In such misery and with no apparent way out, Tommy has become rather hopeless about his situation, until he meets a pretty young waitress named Suki.

Despite his terrible secret, Tommy is a very sympathetic character, and the author does a wonderful job developing his longing for connection with Suki, as well as with making the reader feel the fear and frustration he experiences as the ghosts possess him. The mystery of the story is well-sustained and I really enjoyed the story’s pacing and Tommy’s unique voice. Further, I thought the correlation between Tommy’s possession by ghosts, in which he has little control and a terrible lost sense of self, and the same psychological result of alcoholism was a fantastic, but subtle, symbolic element of the story.

The main difficulty I had with rating the story was due to its editorial issues, something harder for me to overlook since I started working as a freelance editor. Although I’m aware that the use of commas and other punctuation has declined for stylistic reasons in more modern fiction, Soul Mate had a more noticeable lack of punctuation, which sometimes made sentences a bit more difficult to read smoothly – phrases that should have been, but weren’t, separated off by commas and no semicolons between two linked full sentences. In addition, there was the occasional outright missing word. Though it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story, I also thought that the last 25% or so of the book seemed a little bit rushed and abrupt compared to the pacing of the first 75%.

Overall, however, I really did love the voice, style and original premise of the story and I look forward to reading the sequel its ending seemed to indicate would be forthcoming. I believe Soul Mate shows an author with quite a lot of talent and a distinctive style and I hope to see how he develops this in future stories.

I feel like I need to review this book in 2 sections. The first 75% of the book was awesome. I loved it. I loved Crawford’s writing style, the characters were intriguing, and the entire idea was unique. I raved to everyone who wanted to talk books. There were no slow parts, no places that brought me out of the story.

And then I got to the last 25% of the eBook… what? It was like it was a completely different story. It turned into – he did this, and then he did that. I couldn’t believe it – it got boring! And we got a whole new set of goals, and they were resolved, but it left the questions brought up in the first 75% of the book, still up in the air.

Little Spoiler Next:

It seemed like this last part of the book was stuck on there and the visit to Anna was wrote in after the last part in an attempt to pull the two stories together. But it just didn’t work for me. I don’t know why Anna and the murder mystery were even there. I wish Suke would have followed Tommy after she dropped him off. Then we could have found out what her physic abilities were as the two main characters fought the ghosts – which would have brought them closer together. And I wish we could have had a better understanding of Danny (which was something I was waiting the entire book for) but it seemed to be kind of pushed to the side. And it would have been nice to know why Tommy was a ghost taxi in the first place.

I’m still giving this book 4 stars because of the first 75% was so awesome and even though I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed in an ending…

I was lucky enough to get this book free for Kindle, and thus far, it's probably my favorite free thing Amazon has ever given me. Great mystery with a clever paranormal slant. Very strong characters, very well created. The protagonist isn't immediately likable, but he's nonetheless fascinating, dragging the reader into his panic of ghostly possessions he can't fight as the dead use his body to take care of their various unfinished business. I don't want to give away too much, but I won't hurt anything by saying that by the end of the book, I not only liked the main characters, I put the book down only to immediately jump over to Amazon in hopes of buying the sequel to find out what happens to them next. No luck. At least, not yet. I'll be looking for more from this author, though. I hope he won't leave us hanging.

If you're a mystery fan or someone who likes ghosts/horror (I fall into all those categories.) this is a free book I would happily pay for. I believe it's still free, but if it's not by the time you read this, don't let that stop you.

Wow. I read this book in 2 days. I hated to put it down. I could not wait to see what happened next. The fact that ghosts enter & use Tommy's body was cool & is stated right off, so that's not a give away to the story. If you like paranormal / supernatural type books that involve psychics & a little humor & sarcasm, this might be for you. Tommy's friend's death is when the ghosts started taking over Tommy's body to complete their owm unfinished business. The fact that this happens keeps Tommy from having any kind of life other than that of a homeless street person. Tommy is finally able to make a connection with someone, but he us afraid to share his secret. He could lose his friend if he does, or he could gain the help he needs. Then comes the strangest twist. An evil man bent on revenge and murder takes over Tommy and he has to try to fight the ghost and needs even his past enemies to help save his own life. This was an awesome free book for ibooks. I loved it.

I must confess...reading a book written in the first
person is not what I would call my cup of tea. However, by the time I had gotten to the second chapter, I was hooked!

I love a good ghost story and for the most part it delivers huge. It's a very creative storyline and leaves just enough to the imagination to ponder-what if this really happened to me.

I struggled with my decision on the amount of stars this book should receive. I really wish we could use half stars as this book deserves more than 3 but not quite a 4. Some of the other reviews mentioned the story had a lot of typographical errors. I didn't necessarily find this to be the case. I did find a few but not enough to disrupt the story. I give it 3 stars (and 1/2) because I have a a few unanswered questions that I hope will be addressed in book 2 or 3....what exactly is a ghost taxi....what are the hidden secrets about Anna....Jess apparently has talents of her own, what are they?

While it's not the next book I will be reading, I have added book 2 (Ghost Town) to "my" to be read list.

This book tells the story of Tommy who made a mistake when he was younger and is literally haunted by it years later. Until he meets the girl of his dreams and tries to change his predicament.

The premise for this book is interesting and the writing style of the ghosts taking over Tommy's body is very good. However, the book itself felt very drawn out and slow, I actually had to force myself to drive through it and get to it's conclusion. The book also seems to completely change it's plot unexpectedly and very late into the piece which makes the first half feel like very over-detailed filler.

Overall, I got it for free and it was an ok read.

I got this book from Smashwords years ago, and have just gotten around to reading it. Overall, I really enjoyed this read. It's a unique concept, I think, the ghosts possess the main character and use his body to complete whatever unfinished business they have, and the main character is aware and along for the ride.

I hesitated to start reading at first, when I realized this was the first book in a series called Soul Mate. I thought, "Ugh, is he going to fall in love with a ghost?" But that's not it at all. There is a romantic story line, but the book is not a romance in the traditional sense.

Because the story is written in the first person, and because the main character Tommy has his body hijacked by ghosts much of the time, a LOT of the story is his thoughts and feelings and reactions. Tommy is "freaked out" by almost everything.

I wish the author had been more descriptive about some things. Example, paraphrased: The police were screaming in Tommy's face, pushing him around. "The ghosts screamed louder."

It felt to me, as a reader, that the author was just being lazy in not taking the time to figure out what the ghosts sounded and felt like, in order to describe it to us.

Ghost House is its own thing, part romance, part mystery thriller, but not enough of either to be categorized as such.

Tommy's story kept my interest, and I will read the next two books if they're still available.

I was put off reading this book by some of the low scoring reviews on here, but I'm glad I'm old and wise enough to make up my own mind on such things. I actually enjoyed the book with it's unusual premise. I liked Tom and Suki, even Jess, Ally and Anna.
Tom is an actual 'messenger' for ghosts as they are able to inhabit his body, unfortunately with some dire consequences.

Although I liked this book for the most part, I did get a little confused at times when the ghosts were showing themselves through Tommy.

Normally I love paranormal books but this one was the DARKEST book that I have read in a very long time. I had a very hard time finishing this book even with how short it was.

Thomas Curtis is a young man who after a horrible accident happened to his friend has become somewhat of a spirit vessel, which means that the dead can “borrow” his body to talk to loved ones they left behind or to try and right wrongs that happened when they were amongst the living. Tommy meets a very nice young lady in a local diner, Suki, who has been known to try and help everyone that comes into contact with her, however when Tommy skips out on his check she gets very angry with him and when the two of them come into contact with each other she gives him the cold shoulder after having to foot his bill when he was in the diner. Tommy is desperate to make Suki understand that it wasn’t him that walked out on the bill but a ghost when Suki hears that she becomes very upset and tells him to leave her alone.

Suki, has been around mediums her whole life, her mother Ann was brought in on a police investigation when a little girl went missing from her home, there was a conviction but the person that was convicted didn’t hurt the little girl and the Ghost that is in Tommy is determined to set the record straight. When Tommy and the Ghost turn up at Ann’s job without Suki, Ann can tell that there is something wrong and before it is too late Ann Tommy and with the help of Danny, another Ghost the trio is able to banish the Ghost but Tommy needs to figure out what happened to the little girl, it’s almost as if he owes it to the ghost even if the Ghost was willing to kill Tommy when things didn’t go the Ghost’s way.

OMG!! Where do i start? So this is a free ebook on kindle. I got it as i thought it was a shifter book. But its not. This book had me hooked, not straight away but by chapter 2, i couldn't put it down.

It centers round Tommy & he is living rough, sleeping on the streets. when we first meet him he's getting locked up for being drunk & disorderly. It seems to me that this isn't the first time he's been in custody. It starts slowly but picks up the pace quickly. Mickey, is Tommy's good friend who is also homeless. There is some strong characters in this book, other than Tommy, Mickey shows loyalty, Ally a Scottish guy who is, Suki & Jess. I was glad there was no weak characters.

At a point in the book, i do jump to the wrong conclusion. I did think it was all to do with drugs. But its not, he doesn't take drugs, he doesn't want to drink but sometimes its beyond his control. Tommy does get himself into some close shaves but he can't stop it from happening.

I hope Richard Crawford writes book 2, I want more, so much more, want to find out what happens to the gang!!

I got this book when it was free on Kindle books, and to be honest by the time I got around to reading it I had forgotten everything I knew about it. So when I started reading I had no idea what it was going to be about, I really enjoyed it. Tommy, the main character, wasn't immediately likeable however after getting to know him a bit further then I grew to like him and feel sorry for him in places. The ghostly possessions being a punishment seemed a little far-fetched (yes I am aware how ridiculous that statement seems). Given the genre I guess I shouldn't have been surprised at the revenge angle but it just seemed a little too much, that and the situation with Suki's mother, however overall the book was a good read. The plot moved quickly enough and the different activities of the ghosts were amusing, poignant and at times a little strange. That Tommy was able to even attempt to try to keep up a life of his own was impressive. I look forward to reading others by this author and in this series specifically.

I read this novel years and years ago when I first got my kindle and it marked my first experience reading #selfpublished work and I was really impressed with it. When I got this book, the cover was different and it was called Soul Mate. Since my last reading, its had a makeover and the new cover looks wonderful.

I was attracted to the concept of this story as I hadn’t seen anything like it before. Tommy, a young man living rough on the streets is constantly visited by ghosts for his help. They possess his body to sort out their unfinished business. Tommy can do nothing about it but let it happen. As you can imagine, some of the spirits drag him into awful and dangerous situations. Tommy wrestles with alcohol addiction to cope with this new vocation and harbours a deep secret. Everyone believes his best friend died in a terrible accident. Only Tommy knows that it wasn’t an accident at all.

I thought the premise was fascinating and truly original. If you like paranormal stories, especially with possession involved, I highly recommend it.

Good storyline, spoiled only by being badly written. I chose this book because it is free on Kindle and looked different to anything I normally read.

Without giving any spoilers, it's about the supernatural. The whole story however does not quite make sense - the main character can be possessed by ghosts and refuses to tell anyone because no one will believe him, yet the city he lives in accepts the use of mediums. There is even an example where the police converse with mediums. This lack of continuity makes the overall message of what the society believes difficult to digest.

Characters are well developed and I am hoping that book 2 and 3 are also free on Kindle. If not I will be annoyed as the storyline is so gripping I have to know how it ends, and if he truely messes things up once and for all.

Recommended if you are going to get it for free, yet with frequent unnecessary expletives and a lack of advanced sentences, I would not buy this book.

The title of this book doesn't really give you any idea what it's about and the cover image, while creepy, is very 'cheap' feeling and made me wonder if the book was going to be poorly written (yes really judging a book by its cover) but it was a free download so I went for it anyway.

Without giving the game away too much, it's very different from your standard ghost novel which made it feel fresh and kept it interesting throughout. While I liked and felt sorry for the main character, I didn't particularly develop any affection for him.

I know this is first in a series of novels, but the book felt very unfinished - more like the end of a chapter rather than the end of a novel which is the main reason I've dropped it down a star.

I really don't like marking a book this low, but it really wasn't a book that I liked. It was okay, but not one I would read again or that I would keep. It kind of freaked me out. I did like several of the characters: Thomas (Tommy) the main character, except that he kept getting possessed by ghosts - nearly every day! - as they tried to "finish" their "unfinished business" is the best I can describe. The girl he fell in love with, Suki. And his best friend on the streets, Mickey. But the possessions were involuntary and I just couldn't get through the book.

Yes, overall this story had a reasonable plot and character development. However, although I like stories that include mystery and ghosts, I felt it needed a more in-depth feel to it. There was some good /great writing in parts and the trickle of humour was refreshing. To be fair, it could have been 'too modern' for me and yes, I liked it but I wanted more from it. Nevertheless, it is worth a look.

~ Well when I first started on this book, it sounded like some rambling. I was not so sure it was going to turn into anything that I was going to like.
However as I got farther into it, I found it was a good story.
Very compelling mystery with the haunting. I do not find a whole lot of books that I like that Ghosts are the mine part.
This was good though!!
This one I would say if you like paranormal/ Ghosts this one would be for you.

Happy Reading Everyone!
