An excellent character transformation account about Bai Xinyu, a rich spoiled brat who was thrown into the army by his parents, was ridiculed and belittled by his fellow soldiers, but eventually became a military hero. It also contains a great romance between Bai and Yu Fengcheng, an army genius who at first held Bai in contempt, but was gradually touched by Bai's growth and change. Contempt turned into respect, and finally love, as they fought side by side against the enemy.
Some may have a problem with the propaganda and nationalist undertone of the novel, but politics aside, this is one of the best military romance books I've ever read. I adore Shui Qian Cheng's impassioned writing, and especially their humor. I think I've re-read this book twice.
I usually write a sort of review only for those books I really enjoyed, and this one, well I loved it. Till now I only read Chinese web novels with an ancient setting, so this one was the first one set in today's China's army. This is a story about two soldiers, who change thanks to their experience in the army - I do think it's a little bit unrealistic in some points, but nothing too exaggerated. All the characters where lovely, especially the sweet Feng Dongyuan - there's an extra about him, I would have liked a whole story about his experience - and the wise Chen Jing, who's an important supportive character. I have a liking for Yu Fengcheng's mother and father, and about his Uncle I'm still uncertain about what to think about him, but he is still an interesting character. About Bai Xinyu I appreciated how the author didn't make him someone who accepts the feeling of the other man easily, but he struggles to be independent and to sort out his life. I liked the way he improves thanks to the people around him. The thing I liked most is actually the character development of a lot of people, not only the two main characters; I was very engrossed by the training and the missions described, I could feel what the characters were feeling and I just couldn't stop reading. I really enjoyed it.
Me duele y mucho.
So, let me tell you about My Little Poplar, the latest novel I picked up from 188 group. I'll be honest, I didn't have high expectations at first when I saw the cover. It looked kind of "meh", but I believe in giving every book a chance. And boy, was I pleasantly surprised! My Little Poplar turned out to be the best book I've read from this author so far, even better than "Years of Intoxication". It just goes to show, you can't judge a book by its cover.
If you're into military settings, you're going to love this one. The first half of the book is packed with military scenes, and while it can be a bit overwhelming with all the details and jargon, I actually enjoyed it. It was like watching an action movie come to life on the pages, and it gave me a glimpse into a world I knew little about. The second half is where the famous "wife chasing chapter" comes in, which this author is known for.
But what really hooked me on My Little Poplar was the character development. The main lead and main love interest grew so much throughout the book, it was amazing to see. It was like watching two boys grow up, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. Sure, there were some secondhand embarrassment moments, but that just made it even more interesting and hard to put the book down.
And let me tell you, there was plenty of angst too, but it was the kind that felt real and understandable. Given what happened between the main lead and main love interest, it was inevitable, but it was done in a way that felt authentic and not forced.
The book was quite long, with a lot of extras at the end, but it was totally worth it. The ending was perfect, with a satisfying closure that left me speechless and completely satisfied. I highly recommend My Little Poplar if you haven't read it yet. It's definitely one of the author's best works, and the only 188 novel that I'd love to have a physical copy of.
Oh, and by the way, if you've read "In Love With An Idiot", you'll be excited to know that My Little Poplar is set in the same universe, with some appearances from the main lead and main love interest of that book. How cool is that? Definitely adds an extra layer of fun to the story! So, go ahead and give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.
If I had to use a quote to describe this book, it would certainly be this one. This is a book about character growth and progress, about transformation and perseverance, through the story you get to experience the slow metamorphosis that the main characters go through, they are constantly changing for good, realising things they hadn't and surpassing themselves.
While you read you can be amazed by this progress, watching as the characters continue moving forward, without giving up even if they are dead tired, even if they are desperate and they feel like they can't keep going.
Their perseverance is moving and even inspiring.
It's easy to relate with the main character, maybe due to his 'flaws', he is not the typical hardworking and talented main character who since the beginning is prosperous and matchless. He starts being a weakling, the annoying son of a rich family, he knows no hardship and is pretentious, but after he joins the army he discovers a whole new world, a world where no one will care about his status, where no one will pamper him or care if he cries or shouts, all this 'imperfections' enable you to get to know better the protagonist, to feel his progress as something to be proud because you met him in his worst but then you are also able to watch him rise to glory.
The story can make you laugh and be embarrassed, but it can also be painfully heart wrenching. You can feel how your heart is being torn until it can’t stop bleeding, the turmoil of emotions are intense, there are many tragedies that start happening one after the other and you can do nothing but to feel powerless alongside the characters. Many times you also ask yourself the 'whys' and start to wonder the 'ifs'.
This story and the main character's relationship is, in my opinion, unique. Why? Because of the way it starts building, because of the way they meet each other and fall in love with each other. Their feelings are strong and passionate, although I didn't like the way the male lead molested the protagonist at the beginning, later on you realise that maybe he is not really a bad person...
Their affection towards the other is fulfilling, strong but also irreplaceable, they went through many things, they laughed and cried together, they enjoyed and grieved together. They went through many indescribable hardships, life and death experiences that they sincerely won't be able to experience with anyone again in their lives. All those factors start creating an unbreakable bond between them.
And yes, there is also mistrust and misunderstandings, they also fight and suspect each other because of miscommunication, yet they yearn for the other. Their fights and conflicts reflect how the lack of communication, trust and sincerity can erode a relationship, yet how understanding the other, talking about the problems and fighting them side by side, trusting and cherishing each other can also heal said relationship.
In short, this book is like a mysterious journey, you will be amazed as you start exploring it, but also distressed and maybe melancholic, but once you reach the end of the journey you won't be able to forget it. I would say that this book and the characters are memorable for me, the mix of happy moments and desperate ones, the pride of watching the protagonist succeed, the pain of watching him suffer, are only some of the factors that have made this book unique and unforgettable.
ME ENCANTÓ!
I don’t know if I should rate My Little Poplar 3 or 4 stars so 3.5 should be ok. The novel is good, the characters development is great and all the side characters are lovable but I hate the fact that Bai Xinyu was harassed and ra*ed.
Overall it’s a good read if you’re patient enough to get through the first half of the book.
This book is good!! I love the crematorium style and the plot development, but most importantly of all I really liked the character development from Bai Xinyu and Yu Fengcheng, like how BXY was always improving and going toe-to-toe with YFC. Thanks to that, this webnovel was really spicy 💦not only that but the plot was really good. This book is going to have a special place in my heart.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I know that 188-series books are basically just copy-paste versions of the same storyline since they all follow the crematorium trope. Don’t ask me why I keep reading them, I just do. Sometimes, I even reread a few *cough* Beloved Enemy *cough.*
If you’re not familiar with SQC’s books, here’s a quick rundown: Shou falls in love with a scummy gong and gets completely taken advantage of. After a hundred chapters (give or take), he finally grows a backbone and leaves. Naturally, this is when the ML realizes they’ve made a huge mistake, and the chase begins. Cue the groveling. The redemption arc? Questionable. But if you’re patient, you’ll at least get some solid begging.
SQC books just hit that sweet spot when you’re in the mood for something toxic. If there’s too much fluff in your life, sometimes you need a little negativity to balance it out, you know? Lol.
Anyway, this was an okay read. Could’ve been shorter. The military missions felt a bit over the top and unrealistic, but I honestly have no clue how the Chinese military operates, so I can’t say for sure how accurate any of it was. MC and ML are in the same squad, though ML holds a higher position. MC never wanted to be in the military—his family forced him into it, leaving him no choice. He starts off as your typical spoiled rich playboy with no dreams or aspirations, and the story mostly focuses on his character development.
I don’t know what else to say except "It was okay." Nothing groundbreaking, but I knew that going in.
Grovel – 3/5 Plot – 2/5 Translation – 2/5 (because why is there a word "pussy" in my smut when both characters are MEN? 🤦♀️🤦♀️Girl, bye.)
DNF - at chapter 40, started skimming from chapter 26.
The story is relatively average so far but I mainly dropped it because the current completed translation is quite terrible and really prevents me from enjoying the story.
The characters are barely likeable and not enough for me to break my brain reading MTL. Actually nothing is worth succumbing to MTL.
