An unprecedented report for unprecedented times, Profile of a Trump’s Mind, America’s Soul is a unique and timely accomplishment by one of America’s leading intellectuals. Dr. Bandy Lee’s previous New York Times bestseller, The Dangerous Case of Donald 37 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President, opened the door to understanding the Trump presidency from a mental health perspective and has been published in many countries and languages. This new book goes beyond Donald Trump to explaining the followers who elevated him and the nation that tolerated him as president. Why does Donald Trump have such a hold on his followers? Why must he provoke violence? What is going on in the minds of those who support and follow him, after so many scandals, failed policies, and even a deadly insurrection? What caused his ascendancy, and how can we prevent another one? Dr. Lee’s epic new book is “the missing piece” that answers these questions with accessible language. She was the first to call out Donald Trump’s psychological dangers in a major way at the start of his presidency. Written over the summer of 2020, she explains why, after almost 200,000 coronavirus deaths and economic devastation, he is still a candidate for reelection and correctly predicts that he would not concede an election loss, would declare it a fraud, and would not let go of power unless severe limits are set on him from without. She outlines what citizens can do at this critical time to help the nation heal and prevent another Trump travesty. With 20 years of experience treating violent offenders and advising on violence prevention programming for prisons, communities, and governments, Dr. Lee is uniquely well positioned with a considerable track record of accuracy. She has also blown the whistle on the American Psychiatric Association’s misuse of the now-infamous “Goldwater rule” to silence mental health professionals under the Trump presidency. The muzzling of intellectuals and journalists, she has warned, is the first sign of tyranny. Melding the techniques of CIA profiling with established methods of public health, this report represents an attempt to meet mental health professionals’ responsibility to society. At this critical time all seriously concerned Americans need to be aware of Dr. Lee’s conclusions and recommendations.
Dr. Bandy Lee is a medical doctor with a degree in divinity, a forensic psychiatrist, and a world expert on violence. Dr Lee "became known to the public by leading a group of mental health professional colleagues in breaking the silence about the current U.S. president’s dangerous mental impairments." She is currently president of the World Mental Health Coalition, which is dedicated to promoting public health and safety.
National Mental Illness and a Prescription for Wellness.
Dr. Bandy X Lee has described the dire national emergency in which our American society finds itself now just prior to the election of 2020. She explains how so many psychiatrists’ voices have been muted through a misapplication of the “Goldwater Rule” by the American Psychological Association (APA). Therefore with their voices muted many psychiatrists joined together to write the book “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump” in order to explain to the public, lawmakers and anyone who has been striving to understand the insanity of society’s acceptance and normalization of conduct by Donald Trump and his enablers that is so outside the norms of our culture. Dr. Lee does an excellent job of explaining what has happened, why it is happening and what we can do to rectify our situation through education and action. We must acknowledge illness, seek medical attention by utilizing the experts among us. Our future is dependent upon creating a society where equality matters, equal opportunity matters and systemic dysfunctional systems must be dismantled and replaced with adaptive social, political, educational, economic, medical including mental, physical, and spiritual models. Dr. Lee has given us that prescription.
This book is very important and goes into the profile of DT and also a profile of his followers. He has a developed a cult of personality like every dictator.
AS we find ourselves as American Citizens at the Bleakest and most dangerous point since the Late 1960’s. This Timing did not arise out of thin Air. Its presence could and should have been foreseen by the Failures of Institutions respected and trusted throughout American Society. Institutions representing the Lifeblood of Civil, Professional, Economic, and Political Existence.
The Author focuses on just one of these failures, that of the Disgustingly self-imposed muzzling of the Psychiatric and Psychological Professional Class to recognize the obvious Danger of the Rise to Political Power and Influence of an easily diagnosed Criminal Narcissistic Sociopath, Donald J. Trump. History will document that the malfeasance was widespread: Systemic Economic Inequality, Corporate Greed, Media Manipulation and Dishonesty, Ethical, and Educational Failures. All contributed to the Current Debacle. But this book shines the Light on one of the most critical Guardrails that Citizens should have been able to Trust to stand firmly in their Standards and Professional Quality.
We expect that Firemen know who and what causes Fires, that Police understand the threat of Crime, and Doctors can see the Roots of Sickness. But here we have the most serious threat to the survival of Democracy here and possibly The World, carefully documented through rigorous research, and thousands of Professionals refusing to sound the Alarm for Decades.
Even though Profile of a Nation addresses Pre-2020 Events, nothing has changed or improved in 2024 except to get worse. I just wish that these Truths had been exposed before Nov. 5, 2024. At least we can hear them now. I would have preferred Human Narration, but I still appreciate the Facts expressed: Five Stars. *****
Most of this book, at least 70% I feel, is the author defending professional psychiatric evaluation of Trump. I get the argument is like if a medical doctor detected a person with a dangerous infectious disease entering a crowded bounce house at a children's part, then "not my patient" is not a good reason for staying mute. A lot of arguments, some with backing case law, are given for a psychiatrists assessing a president, specifically Trump, who is a danger for access to nuclear strikes, etc. and responsible for a higher per capita death rate in the US than most First World nations.
Much is made that there is broader ethical and legal reasoning for speaking openly of the threat of a deluded (one who believes the lies they speak) than may be suggested by The Goldwater Rule, an ethical principle established by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) that prohibits psychiatrists from offering professional opinions on the mental health of public figures whom they have not personally examined. Named after the controversial 1964 presidential campaign of Barry Goldwater, who was the subject of a damaging magazine survey of psychiatrists' opinions, the rule was adopted in 1973 and aims to prevent speculative, biased, and irresponsible commentary that could damage the psychiatric profession and the public's trust in it.
This is a book that arrived too late through no fault of its author. We needed the message spelled out clearly, as she does somewhat too far along in the book, about 5 years ago. But maybe we would not have taken it seriously then; who knows? I have one major complaint and one minor one. The minor quibble is about the errors--missing words, garbled sentences--which are likely due to the rush of writing. No big deal, except when sentence meaning is lost. The big quibble is Lee's nonstop complaining about the APA. I realize the importance of the reinterpretation of the Goldwater Rule. In fact, I got it the first time. And the second. And the third.... However, those quibbles aside, the chapter in which Lee finally lays out the substance of Trump's issues is worth the cost of the book.
What we learn about Trump but we're afraid to ask.
Brandy offers an excellent psychological analysis of the man we call Trump. I have an MS in Management, with a BA in Economics history. I love to read and learn new things about the circumstances we live under and about the elected officials who lead our nation. Trump, for me, was a person who not only could not be trusted but was known to be manipulative in how he uses other ro self-serve his own ego. Brandy X Lee taught me many things about his state of mind and what that means to the rest of us. The book is an education not just about Trump but the psychological profiling terms and explanations in detail and what that means to us all who would have to live under a tyrants rule. God help us all shoukd he gain a second term as President.
Hi, I just read your story and OMG it was actually FIRE. Fr tho, while reading my brain was in full-on IMAGINATION MODE
I'm an artist and I take commissions for Webtoons, Comics, Manga & Character/Cover Art. Not gonna lie dude but your story would look insane as a comic or webtoon, and I wanna be the one to do it. No pressure at all, just thought it could be super dope to bring it to life visually.
If you're down or wanna see some of my work, hit me up on Discord (eve_verse). Hope to hear from u soon!
This may be the book of the decade for me, certainly of the year. A true eye opener on where we have been in the Trump era. Something that finally explains to me how it is possible that so many people have blindly followed this unstable fascist on his journey to destroy democracy, the country, and his own followers, all for the propping up of his fragile self. Thank you Brandy X. Lee, you are an American hero in my take.
Dr. Lee has written several books and has led efforts to understanding of the days-horizon and cognitive dissonance we, as a nation have experienced during the administration of Donald Trump. Deftly written and abundantly documented, this is an important book not only for the light is sheds on our collective experience but to provide insights so we never let it happen again.
Clearly explores the relationship between the mental health of our former POTUS, Donald Trump and his followers and the disastrous consequences for our national mental health and the lives of our citizens, while proposing individual and collective actions for restoring a healthy community.
This is one of the most important books I've read. It helped me more clearly understand Trump and Trumpism and the other pathological personalities I've seen in my years as a medical doctor. Dr. Lee is a wonderful scholar and writer.
Should be required reading for ... well, everybody. I finally understand Trump and it's truly frightening. My only issue was the need for better proof reading.
70 million voted for Trump. Are they psychotic? Bandy Lee should be careful. She knows full well that: “[u]sing psychiatry for political or self-aggrandizing purposes is stigmatizing for our patients and negatively impacts our profession.”
