– You surviving this far doesn’t mean everything will be permitted to you. No, it simply means you now have more responsibility. The sin of living on, the sin of surviving by trampling on someone else’s stories, the sin of using others’ Fables as your fertiliser and daring to spread your branches and sprouting new buds – so, if you’re alive, then be responsible for those sins.

this is, by far, the best one in the whole series. the whole journey to the west arc is definitely one of my favorite.

also, i may or may not made a mistake of listening to james blake's rendition of when we were older while reading the part where dokja realized that the journey to the west scenario that he joined is the one that belongs to his nebula :")

[He has been alone for a very long time.]
[To someone like that, telling him that he’s not alone a few times won’t suddenly change anything.]
[You need to tell him, always be next to him, and reaffirm it for him.]
[Until he realises that he’s truly not alone anymore.]

Epic isn't enough to describe what I feel about the novel.
I've been reading the novel from so long that I have lived my most hard times knowing I have the comfort of the book at the end of the day. This volume, probably the longest of all, brings us closer to the "end" of the novel Kim Dokja is living through. I found some scenarios pretty similar - Dokja trying one up the protagonist, him sacrificing himself and returning to fight again along his companions. I do wanna pick on how some parts around ~30% into book felt like the worst pace and I was dragging my feet till it picked. Then again I have never read a novel as unique as ORV.

Probable SPOILERS for previous volumes (and maybe this one too)

(4.5 Stars)

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
【A Story could be made up, but it'll never tell a lie.】
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

Honestly, I don't even know where the last volume ended and where this one began because everything is soo messed up. It's a big thing that I even decided to write a review for this.

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
As things stood, I couldn't really tell apart whether we were in the [Journey to the West] or [Kim Dokja's Company's Disorganised Great Adventure Get-Together].
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

I love all of themm enough that I can barely choose between any. Well, maybe Jihye might be a little down the line but you get my point. I still can't believe they haven't changed the name yet smh. I mean, how hard could it be to get a name for your Nebula when you have someone like Sooyoung?

Kim Dokja
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
I would never sacrifice myself ever again. I'd not leave my companions behind. Just like how Yoo Joonghyuk didn't want to give up on this life, I shall not give up even until the end.
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

The protagonist who's not the protagonist. The amount of respect I have for KDJ Co. for being able to actually handle this guy is infinite. No offense but I loveee when he's getting bullied (mind you, he's still one of my favs and better than Joonghyuk). That worker's revolt was the BEST. For all I know, It might even be my favourite scenario till now. Also I kinda like how the author does actually show that he's a proper introvert even though him settling into this world shouldn't have been THIS easy but eh.

Yoo Joonghyuk (no idea which turn, take all but none)
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
⸢A regressor actually doesn't regress. What actually regresses isn't him, but everything else excluding him.⸥
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

Can we say that this whole volume literally belonged to this guy? I mean it was all about Joonghyuk this turn and Joonghyk that turn. (I think he's slowing growing on me.) Also that scene with Joonghyuk, Secretive Plotter and Yoo Mia was so goodd. Not sure why but I want more Yoo Mia and Secretive Plotter interactions. Alsoo HIS COOKINGGGG. I don't think there's ANYONE in the world who reads this thing and doesn't want to try his food.

Han Sooyoung
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
Han Sooyoung replied to her in a shameless voice. "I'm working part-time in the dating industry."
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

I loveeeeee her (not enough to compete with the Shatter Me post tho) I'm blank rn so gonna leave this half blank too

Gilyoung and Yoosung
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
⸢Would I be able to go to a PC Bang with Gilyoung-ie and play games with him, and…⸥
⸢And, go to the Han River with Yoosung-ie and share a pizza with her?⸥
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

I may have given up halfway through this review and accepted the fact that I can't write one but it just felt incomplete without these kids so atleast I'll give them a proper mention. The way they went from jealousy and constantly fighting eachother to actually caring about the otherrr. Gilyoung even signed a contract with his sponsor just to save Yoosung.

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
"Hey, Shin Yoosung, you don't need a finger or two, now do you…?"
"You probably don't need anything above your neck, though?"
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

Yoo Sangah

I think I'll need to say this a lot more: I don't hate her anymore

Lee Hyunsung

Just found out we share the same mbti :)

Persephone

Loml so...had to mention her too

Jang Hayoung

Can Dokja atleast TRY and give her some attention???

Han Donghoon

I NEED HIM BACK

Secretive Plotter

Once upon a time, I actually used to like him.
Now?
I don't.

Maybe he had already known the truth – that life was an accumulation of one's choices, that those countless choices piled up to eventually become a Story worth a single person.

One's life would always be greater than a story written about him.

“I had read every regression turn found in the 'Ways of Survival'. I still remembered them all. However, there was one part that even I had failed to read.

⸢The Epilogue.⸥”

Have you protected all that you were supposed to protect?" like !!!! ???? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN.

“The stars of the night sky sparkled as they looked down at us, as if the destruction of the world was a story belonging to a distant realm.

While chewing the dumpling, I began thinking this for the first time. That I wouldn't have minded this story going on for a little while longer.”

That speaks volumes.

4/5 🌟

Two chapters before the end of this volume, I thought it would end in a somewhat calm manner for the first time. But that final moment at the last chapter. WHAT THE HELL?????

Now my confidence about this novel having a happy ending is continuously dwindling right before my eyes!! Would it be Kim Dokja against everyone??? I know his companions would be by his side, but still!!!

I have no courage to start the final volume, but I'm dying to know what will happen next!! I'm getting so anxious, damn!!!

Where do I even start.
This was the volume that was most tiring to read. Am I complaining? no. When it comes to a layered novel like orv, It is quite pleasant.
Great War of Saints and Demons arc was great. Best arc of vol4 in my opinion.
This volume was more focused on morals of the Star Stream + orv universe rather than being character focused, with the exception of yoo joonghyuk because the fight with 'Hell of Eternity' versus Secretive Plotter were all great. my only problem is with the lack of Yoo Sangah screentime, since she had a big comeback I was honestly expecting more. Still since I learned more about worldbuilding/star stream morals/Uriel/Yoo Joonghyuk, I still loved this volume. Also the end!?!? SINGSHONG WHEN I CATCH YOU...

“No importa de qué género, raza o mundo seas. No importa si eres fuerte o débil, famoso o no famoso.

This volume started out with one of the best arcs in the entire series, and I mean this from the perspective of fandom creators being given a lot of material to work with. One of the issues I faced with this novel was Dokja's insane jump in skill level near the end that was inconsistent with the pace the author kept for the rest of the series. The other major issue was that the emotional he-will-die-soon scenes came a little too early on in the novel, making it difficult to believe they would carry much weight when there were still several episodes left to fix everything.

“That man is the world I wish to save.”

Damn. That ending though. I need to process what happened.

While I was reading the last few episodes I kept frowning. I was so anxious that something will happen and also worried about every character. The fights weren't bad guys vs. Kim Dokja's Company anymore. More like "It's a complicated situation, please resolve it with minimum damage to everyone involved!" kind of reading experience.

So many great arcs in this volume! The Great War, the Apocalypse, the Journey to the West, the Worker's Revolution (haha, our own beach episode), and the Final Story... Even when some bits seemed to be dragging a bit, I didn't care. I'm sooo invested.

My babies all deserve the best, but especially Kim Dokja:
[He has been alone for a very long time.]
[To someone like that, telling him that he’s not alone a few times won’t suddenly change anything.]
[You need to tell him, always be next to him, and reaffirm it for him.]
[Until he realises that he’s truly not alone anymore.]

Whenever it's implied he's still alone deep down, still aloof, I hurt for him. Please shower him with hugs and kisses, people.

We're almost done. And I don't think I'm ready.

Maybe I'm just gaslighting myself, but I strongly feel that there is a very specific reason, not only for the whole series but particularly for the 4th volume, to be this long a book.

Having read all those negative comments about this volume, I never would have expected it to be this entertaining a journey. I hope not to ever forget all the fun I've had.

PS. My honest reaction after Kim Dokja described Yoo Joonghyuk saying:

(disclaimer: I don't actually ship them, though I think of them as soulmates.)

*This review is based solely on chapters 373-481 of the webnovel

Definitely started to feel the length and repetition of the scenarios in this volume. Unlike the beginning of the webnovel, where the scenarios and how Kim Dokja subverted them in increasingly interesting ways was just as engaging as the wider mystery of what the Star Stream is, I find myself less and less invested in the scenarios. They all seem to play out and conclude much too similarly.

One highlight of this volume however was The Wizard of Oz land, which I could not have anticipated lmao. Otherwise, what is most keeping my interest is the mystery surrounding the Fourth Wall, what the xx of the scenarios is, and my love for these characters.

One of the issues I had with this novel was the insane jump in Dokija's skill level near the end, which was inconsistent with the pace the author maintained for the rest of the series.

The other big issue was that the emotional scenes of him dying early came a little early in the novel, making it hard to believe that they would have much weight when there were still many more volumes to fix things.

As I read the last few volumes, I kept frowning. I was so worried that something was going to happen and also worried about every character.

The fights were no longer about the bad guys versus Dokija's group. It was more of a "Here's a complicated situation, let's solve it with minimal damage to everyone involved!" reading experience. There were so many great chapters in this volume! The Great War, Apocalypse Now, Journey to the West, Workers' Revolution, and The Last Story...

Maybe I'm just fooling myself, but I feel like there's a very specific reason, not just for the series as a whole but especially for volume 4, for it being such a long book.

I FINALLY FINISHED! This book really is just about fighting fate and actively fighting the universe as it tries to shoehorn you into a neat little conclusion. I love how meta it gets with the idea of stories, like how your experiences they physically make you up, and just their power. ahhhh it makes my brain go brrrr.

More than ever, Vol 4 really solidified the fact that ORV is one hell of an epic.

ORV has such such a compelling story with a group of incredibly well written characters, each of them having depth and immense character growth as the storyline progressed. Not only that, it makes use of clichés and transforms them into something completely new and infuses them with something that has the ability to move and touch your heart. There are stories for every reader out there (pun intended) such as stories about the suffering of being human, the pain of losing someone you love, the sacrifices one must make in order to achieve their dreams, the power of family and friendship that transcends everything else, and so many more.

The authors clearly spent a tremendous amount of time planning this novel out because they cleverly revealed what it truly means to be a human and what humanity encompasses through the stories as told by Kim Dokja's Company. In addition, Vol 4 was just full of plot twists beyond imagination and there were times where I just had to stop reading in order to digest the words properly because a particular scene or arc was just that impactful. Also, I cried a bunch in Vol 4.

In a sentence, I think Vol 4 can be summed up by something KDJ said in Ep 92.
- however, if everything would end as a scenario anyway, then I should be the one to decide which scenario to live in.

These people, despite all odds, chose again and again to live life the way they want to. In a world that doesn't care whether they live or die, they will keep moving forward to that conclusion until their last breath.

I didn't look up any spoilers but I know that the ending is gonna wreck me, just like how it ended up wrecking everyone else who read the final volume and epilogue.

I enjoy the meta-discussions about stories in general and about the plot of the current book itself. It's difficult to talk about what I mean without spoiling elements of the plot, so I'll just say this. When the explanation given for the story so far looked thoroughly farfetched, I was irritated. But having the characters call out the ludicrousness of the plot point and pointing out that this seemed like something a substandard novel would do somehow made me accept things. Furthermore, I really love what the author did with his discussion of things just not being able to be imagined by the audience as opposed to being impossible. I especially enjoyed that one scene in the episode in the novel on the squared circle. I now have hopes and expectations for getting good answers to the how and why of this world, but I don't know if the author will deliver or revert back to "well, you already knew Ways of Survival was a badly written novel". I'm pretty excited to find out the answers though and I trust Singshong to take me through the final leg of this journey.

I almost forgot to comment on the translator switch. The translator was changed near the end of the previous volume and I was wondering if it would be really irritating or jarring. It turns out that I got used to it very quickly. One thing that helped me was that I was reading a version of the book where the names were not changed. See the below link for more info:
