Apocalypse Gates Author's Cut #7

Unexpected Dev-elopments

Rate this book
Alvin was happy to finally give Gothy one of the things she’d been begging for all along— a plane— so he was understandably upset when it died in its first, short-lived flight as they helped the Red River Army Depot fend off a horde of zombies from Dallas.

Gothy was happy to get a replacement for the plane, however, and the armored vehicle sporting a BIG gun pleased Alvin as well. With the Bradley Fighting Vehicle in their possession, he couldn’t help but wonder what could possibly be a real challenge in the future.

Alvin made the decision that they would all take a few days to learn what the Bradley was capable of before they ventured further east. Its Bushmaster gun delivered a hell of a kick to anything with armor, though Alvin wondered how they could acquire TOW missiles or high-explosive ammunition to boost their damage even more.

After Alvin and his group wiped a miniboss out without so much as breaking a sweat, Alvin should have been expecting more changes to the game he now inhabited. After all, he seemed to be a nexus of Dev-elopments as the game went on.

(This book contains adult situations, in all their horror and glory, including but not limited to: sex, abuse, drug use, and murder. It also contains graphic sex scenes, which portray elements of BDSM and harem. You’ve been warned.)

Can't believe I missed this one, but let me review it now. I might be just a tiny bit biased, but I loved it.

Overall this series has been less satisfying than Daniel's other offerings. Nearly everything Mr. Schinhofen writes is exceptional, some truly wonderful (see Aether's Blessing). The two exceptions have been the Apocalypse Gates series and his book the Greenways Goblins. The issues with these books are the same; The main characters are not sympathetic and both stories seem to lack a overall story arc.

A book that is simply some characters traveling about, the end, does not hold a readers interest. It is as lacking as watching someone else role play simply to be playing. Without a story, striving, a climax and a resolution to whatever the story entailed, you end up with a book that is "eh" at best.

Think about it; what if the Lord of the Rings was simply Frodo wandering around. No reason to be doing so other than "because". Kind of lacking, yes?

This can be overcome to some extent if you have interesting characters, but in both of these series the protagonists are not likable. The question these characters answer throughout most of their books is "what would it be like if I crapped on everyone around me, and was powerful enough that I could get away with it?"

This finally changed in Unexpected Dev-elopments, and Hero and company start to become more human, but by this time it is a bit late to the party for the series. Certainly For Goblins. Maybe for AG.

Finishing this book I thought the author did better, but the series is still aimless and I found my reaction was "okay, I know this will probably be the last one, but I really don't mind that".

Would I read another AG book? Sure. Even at his worst Daniel Shinhofen is a good writer. Would I rather be reading Aether's Revival # or the next Binding Words? Yes I would.

If the author provided an actual story arc for AG, instead of aimless wandering, would I be enthusiastic about AG 8? Probably. The characters are actually changing. If more time was spent with character growth and getting to know the MC's I would be much more interested in further books. The best scene in this entire book was the date fight between Hero and Desiree. That showed me more about the dwarven hottie than anything else in the whole book!

Now, all the critique aside, I still gave the book 5 stars because, as I said, even at his worst, the author is still very good. My issue is just that, as some of his other series show, it could be much better.

awesome

Probably the best book so far in the series, i loved every second of it! I really enjoyed the dev shake up and everything that come of it. Kinda sucks they lost half the armor rating on vehicles. Fantastic book keep them coming

Sleep? Bah I have a book to read!

So if you're reading this I'm going to presume that you've already read the first 6 books in this series, if you haven't, why are you reading this go read book 1 Rapture or where ever you left off last! If you've loved the prior books then odds are you will continue to love Schinhofen's writing with this installment although likely like myself you'll also be mildly frustrated once you reach the end and join those of us who found ourselves forgoing sleep last night when we realized that the new volume was available. Be warned as the description says contains graphic descriptions of intimacy often with multiple participants so if you're about to write a review or leave a 1 star review because your feelings got hurt don't bother because you can't say you didn't have SOME chance of being warned.

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.

I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.

Cheers

Still fun

Overall still a good story and I am looking forward to the next one. I wish the author would tone down some of the interactions between the main characters. At this point and time we get it. He loves them and they love him. We don’t have to be reminded in every conversation. It’s fine to do that stuff in stories but space it out some so it doesn’t feel like they are saying it just to keep convincing themselves. They were insecure at the beginning so that made sense but they should have grown as characters enough so they don’t have to keep forcefully reinforcing there love.

Another solid book in this series, and I feel that they're getting better as it goes along. The relationships are a better-balanced part of the story than I found in some of the author's earlier works, and overall it's a good story that I continue to enjoy.

One thing I don't understand is why, with the thousands of tanks in the USA, Alvin and the don't have one yet. A Bradley is ok, but if you really want to put the hurt on big things a 120mm (or even a 105mm from an older M1 Abrams or M60A3) is a much better choice...

Just Awesome

The thing I love about Daniel Schinhofen's work is how his characters continue to evolve as people. They don't remain as a standard stereotype. There's also the fact that he seamlessly blends in mixes of action, commedy, romance, sex and small day to day things like having a meal. This is possibly one of my all time favourite books in this series. Really looking forward to getting this on audible and also the next book in this series.

Another S&M tale of Alvin and the girls

Alvin’s Team Asshole ride again through another game infused quest for XP and upgrades. Killing mobs and mini bosses with their impressive kit of vehicles and weapons of destruction. It was fun and the few sex scenes that were not fade to black were well written and provided more insight into the characters personality so it’s not just for ‘show’ for those that like explicit scenes.

Loved it

Great continuation, ties up some loose ends and adds new enemies and friends. Good to see Alvin grow and grow his family. Love what happened to Sammi. I am hopeful to see where it goes and what she adds. Super sad about Jarvis. Please leave a review so the author continues to write this series.

Well worth it!

I've read the other books and this one is a continuation of the story. It has answered questions from the others and contained many laughs and puns.
But alas more to come so now we must wait for the next in the saga. As with all his book, we the readers can't wait for out next fix.

Great read

Excellent addition to the series. There is good character development with a lot of the older acquaintances making another appearance along with some new ones. Love the newest addition and hope to see more of her. Gothy got just about everything she’s ever asked for in this book. Oh well. Sharing is caring.

Another good read

I like this series, gonna need some beastkin soon though. Gotta love those fox and cat girls. I'm glad gothy has been recognized as a higher sexual being by a higher being because she seemed too much for a human. Woulda either had her as aphrodites chosen or part succubus asap.

And another one!!!

Great book and awesome addition to the series! Can’t wait for the next one. I’m usually an audiobook reader because life requires multitasking but this author is one of the few that I will lose sleep to actually read because audiobooks can take so long to be released.

High octane battles with a little romance on the side

Are intrepid adventurers continue in this fun-filled romp of adventure, monster slaying both human and non-human. There is lots of heart pounding battles along with pure fantasy going on in this story. The fun kind of fantasy along with erotic romance. I cannot wait for the next book in the series but I guess I will have to.

Hero & Co.

In Unexpected Dev-elopments (Apocalypse Gates Author's Cut Book 7) Daniel Schinhofen takes us back to the universe of Hero and his wives. Another great addition to the series, Daniel keeps the story going in true Schinhofen fashion. Fast moving and as packed with action as it is packed with action! Highest recommendation.

Expanded Dominance

Another great foray into a world demanding a strong hand, firm control, and a caring touch. New places, characters, events, growth, and changes. Notable changes. The crew seems to have come together well [heh], and established relations with important groups, so now it’s just a matter of surviving what the world throws at them. Gods know what that will be. (No, really.) Definitely recommended (20+) for adult readers.

Awesome as usual

A favorite series of mine. Love all parts especially the exploration and new discovery. Harem is fun And is kept fresh and not to intrusive. In my option the best of the author who tends to get to lovie/emotional late in his series. The world here is continuing to evolve and grow which leaves much to read and do. Looking forward to the next book.

Was a great time

I was kinda upset in the beginning of the book. But after reading I understand, Dan is trying to finish this series. I hope he does and with the way these books are setting up. I hope delta world brings these characters over there. Wouldn't that be something. Team A-hole and the Dark King both in one series. Dan ' Bravo Zulu '

Good again

Still enjoying the series. The only complaint I'd state and this is personal preference, is I feel like the sex scenes are too long. Introducing a new person to the scene and fleshing it out is expected but feels redundant when it's the same old people. Again only a personal preference.

Still going strong, kicking butt and taking names

Team AH has terminated most of the monsters that were giving them grief. It seems that they have also come to an understanding with the developers. Only the greys still pose a hazard due to their more advanced tech. However, now they are taking sides in a battle between some gods and their wife. What could go wrong?

Absorbing LitRPG

Alternate universe, LitRPG, post apocalypse, fantasy races, BSDM elements, harem adult situations

Al and women continue to handle big threats and build alliances across the west and mid west remnants of the USA. characters continue to be well written and unique. The kinks are less of a draw, but that's just personal preference. Well edited. Will buy book 8.

Another great read.

I can't put my finger on why but once I start one of Daniel's books I have a hard time putting them down. It's another great story, with tying up some loose ends, and laying out what may be coming.

For the Team

What is there not to love about this series? Alvin, Gothy, Mousie, Desiree, and now Sammi... Every time I pick up a new Apocalypse Gates book, the only thing I find I'm wanting for is for them to last longer.

FINALLY

Probably the best one in the series so far. Taking care of plotlines from other settlements really help bring things together. I also liked the inclusion for more people into the base.
