At the End of the Storm: Stories from Liverpool's Historic Title Win

Rate this book
As Liverpool ended their 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England, they were followed by their equivalent from the world of sports writing: a team of elite talents, assembled to leave all competition trailing in their wake. This is the story of Liverpool’s title win in the longest season, as told by the writers of The Athletic. Never in the history of football writing has a league race been covered in such depth by such a talented pool of writers as the newly-assembled staff of The Athletic. The result is an alchemical blend of inside access and expert analysis; great ideas and beautiful writing. Liverpool’s title win is relived in real time, in 360 degrees.

Articles include profiles of each of Liverpool’s title winners by their former youth team coaches; on-the-road features from the hometowns of some of their international superstars, including Oliver Kay watching Sadio Mane score against Manchester City in the company of the striker’s family, in Senegal; Daniel Taylor watches Liverpool-Man City in the company of Kevin Keegan and James Pearce spends 90 minutes analysing Virgil van Dijk; plus there’s exclusive interviews with Jurgen Klopp, and the club’s US owners.

For the true believers out there only; I count myself as one [hence, the 4 stars].
This book is a collection of articles that appeared in The Athletic during last season [I am a fan of James Pearce], so it is more an amplification of last season, as opposed to a history. That's good and bad. There a fair amount of repetition, and throughout most of the book the games themselves are merely background, or a point-in-time barometer. Good chapters, such as when one of the authors watches a game with Sadio Mane's family home in Senegal, and the chapter with short reminiscences by prominent Reds' youth coaches.
Really, it's metadata of the season.
But it's nice to relive that amazing season, even if it IS still somewhat fresh in our minds [especially nice since I am reading it after the Reds' 4th consecutive loss, which hasn't happened in almost 100 yrs].
Apparently, there's a video out with the same name - I'd bet that would be a bit more exciting.
Seeing Klopp fist-pump at the Kop is definitely more exciting than reading about it.
Worth a read if you're a Reds fan - maybe in small doses.

I believe this is just a collection of the articles revolving around Liverpool FC from The Athletic during the 2019/2020 title winning season. If you're a subscriber, you've probably read most of them, and can probably give this book a skip.

If you're like me (non-subscriber), this was actually a good follow-up to Allez Allez Allez by Simon Hughes from the previous CL winning season. I came into this book expecting significant overlaps in content, and was quietly surprised to find very little of them. And as usual, the quality of the sports journalists at The Athletic (at least the ones covering LFC) like Hughes and Pearce continues to be top-notch.

As an American Liverpool fan, I enjoyed this. The Athletic followed and reported them well this year. I felt they gave good attention to many smaller stories that happen within the large story of Liverpool winning the PL title after the 30 year drought. YNWA!!
