DCI Kenny Murrain #4

Stilled Voices

Rate this book
STILLED VOICESWhen will the voices stop? The murder of professional astrologer Andrew Gorman seems a straightforward case for DCI Kenny Murrain – a tragic death resulting from an interrupted burglary. But when Gareth Clayburn, assistant to stage medium Justin Bannerman, is found dead in identical circumstances, Murrain begins to suspect the murders are linked. Meanwhile, Geoff Nolan, television personality and professor of psychology, is developing a new series exploring the psychology of the paranormal. Starting with Bannerman's work as a supposed spiritualist. When Murrain receives an unexpected approach from the security services, he realises that the links between the killings lie deep in Murrain's own past and his own paranormal gifts. After days of rain and with floodwaters rising. Murrain finds himself in a race against time to prevent further deaths. In a shattering climax at Nolan's riverside home, Murrain finally comes face to face with an adversary who shares his remarkable gifts, as the book races to its dramatic and potentially tragic climax. Praise for Alex Walters‘A talent to be reckoned with … A strong story line, muscular prose and a real sense of pace…a police procedural for a new age’ - Daily Mail‘…Right up there with the best police procedural thrillers of the last few years. Expect to hear much more of Walters in the future.’ – Mark Timlin

I am loving this series, i like all the characters and their quirks, unusual storylines. The build of the story worked for me, however i did feel the ending was abrupt and left loose ends.

Not as good as book 3.
I like DCI Murrain’s psychic abilities but this book is about murders set around his and several other peoples paranormal backgrounds and for me it wasn’t as interesting.
Love the development of the characters (police team) though.
Can’t say much more without giving it away..
It won’t stop me reading book 5 but I can only give this one 3 stars..

Disturbingly chilling!

Having read the three previous books in this series I was a little puzzled why I was finding it a little difficult to actually get into this story. All became clear the further into the book I got , the paranormal isn't my cup of tea even though I like the fact DCI Murrain has a gift in that spectrum.
I found this storyline rather confusing in all honesty, but enjoyable all the same, possibly because the characters pull you into the story.
Good well throughout plot that keeps you guessing right up to the shocking ending!
An excellent read, but sadly not my favourite in this wonderful series!

This was really interesting, a story developing and tension building. How disappointing then, that the end just happened abruptly with no real resolution for the reader. Is Joe really dead? If so, why? He was one of the main members of the team and nicest characters. Is the killer still at large? Is there another book to come to explain all this? And the other characters, heavily involved to begin with but mostly sidelined by the end. The last couple of pages are rushed and make for a very unsatisfactory end. Annoying because I’d enjoyed it up to that point.

Stilled Voices by Alex Walters is book 4 in the DCI Kenny Murrain book series. This storyline is rather dark focusing on people’s telepathic powers, such as those that Kenny Murrain experiences.
The weather also plays an integral part in the build up of the story, because of the heavy rain causing flooding. There is also at times a biblical theme to the storyline because of the heavy rain and flooding.
This storyline covers murder and death, one of which is unexpected and will have serious repercussions on the murder team.
Highly recommended

Another great read!

These are excellent police procedurals even before you add in Murrain’s intriguing abilities. Alex Walters builds his characters from the ground up so they live and breathe. Great stuff.

We'll I am pleased that the last sentence is Kenny telling us he will be back, because I cannot wait for the next instalment. I found the beginning a bit slower than usual in the series but it made up for it before long. It was interesting going more fully into Kenny' s odd psychic feelings and making them a bigger part of the plot.

Never volunteer.

In the previous books there has been just a little of the paranormal. But lots of psycopaths.
This one has the paranormal to the forefront, and the psycopaths are one a whole new level.
The English weather is its usual miserable.
No doubt symbolic.

Another great story

Another great story in the SCI Murrain series. Lots of interesting characters and a plot that had many twists and turns and an ending that I did not see coming.

At a loss to rate this book - particularly because of the ‘end.’ Do I continue the series…….? That remains the question.

2.5星吧,就是这里面警察全都毫无作为,而且越来越灵异,最后一本也看了,不咋好,不推荐。

This is the fourth in the series featuring DCI Kenny Murrain. It is an at times disturbing tale and leads to a dramatic showdown from which nobody escapes unscathed.

Murrain has a sense when things are not as they should be, leading to him "seeing" and sometimes hearing things that are not on others' wavelengths; however, this is not always a good thing.

A number of individuals are targeted and murdered by a twisted and psychotic killer, all linked by an academic study from some twenty years previously. Murrain took part in the study and so is potentially a target himself.

When an astrologer and then a stage medium's assistant are found stabbed, there doesn't seem to be an obvious link. That is, until an intelligence agent appears who seems very keen to speak to Kenny. It is through him that the link is made and Kenny realises he may also be in danger.

A retired academic's wife is the target of a curious break-in and it appears her late husband led the study. He died in a supposed hit and run. The study also links TV presenter and psychologist Geoff Nolan, whose wife also took part. It is at Nolan's riverside address that the chilling denouement takes place.

One thing is for sure - Kenny Murrain has unfinished business and it will take him into a very uncomfortable place, personally and psychologically.

A great addition to an excellent series and I look forward to reading what happens next.

Chillling

This novel was absolutely intriguing. The subject of paranormal experiences has always interested me, so this was something that I was looking forward to reading, and I am pleased to say I wasn’t disappointed.

Having read the previous DCI Murrain stories, I am extremely familiar with his “gift” and have always found it extremely interesting. I was keen to read this one as the title promised that we might find out more about this particular side to the tenacious detective, and it certainly gave us a much bigger insight. Although as the story advanced, I started to wonder whether this might be the end of Kenny. There was plenty going on and at times it became a little confusing with so many facets to the plot, however it all started to come together nicely, and just as I thought I had guessed who the murderer might be, I soon realised I had jumped to conclusions too soon. The ending was a big shock (not in a good way) and quite chilling. There were a few inexplicable things happening, which were quite fascinating and left me wondering whether we might find out a bit more about that in the next chapter of DCI Murrain and his team.

This was a beautifully written book, with very believable characters who come to life in the hands of this brilliant author and I am eagerly awaiting more.
