Ahren can hardly believe his luck. His apprenticeship finally comes to an end, and Khara’s interest in him is growing by the minute. He and his companions leave the Southern Jungles and sail westwards, this time in search of two Paladins, who are apparently living a peaceful existence on one of the Isles of the Cutlass Sea. Yet their quest proves full of difficulties, for a war among the pirates has transformed the Cutlass Sea into a bubbling cauldron, hiding its own tragic drama. While Ahren and his friends do their utmost to win over the two Paladins in their attempts to defeat HIM, WHO FORCES, the High Fang, SVEN, is nearing the consummation of his fiendish plan.
I was born in Krefeld, Germany in 1976 and still live there under the caring eyes of my wife and two Norwegian Forest cats. Originally a publishing salesman, I couldn't resist the lure of writing, and after over a dozen years of playing the gamemaster in pen-and-paper groups, not to mention reading hundreds of fantasy novels, I decided to finally try to write a story myself that I thought might be worth telling. And so my novel Ahren was published in Germany, the first in the best-selling series The 13th Paladin.
When I am not creating new worlds and stories, I like to relax by playing pen-and-paper and story rich video games, reading or binging on TV series. I also practise Jiu Jitsu and the art of handling ancient Japanese weapons like the Katana or the Bo Staff.
“Let’s see, you’re: hideously disfigured? Blaming me for the consequences of your criminal actions? Vowing revenge at any cost? Great. Here’s some food and enough gold to get you to the dark lord’s fortress. I’ll see you again when you’ve built up your evil power! Superb.”
The Sven part is rather annoying. Also this is what, book five, and they’ve found like two of the paladins. I’m out.
I got lost in time reading these books . I binge read the first 5 books and now i am waiting really impatiently for the 6th and 7th books to be finished translated to English and published. I'm really wishing i could read German so i wouldn't have to wait to continue this epic I will not ruin the story so i will just say i really recommend this series to everyone who likes any genre of fantasy books from michael j sullivan to game of thrones to Stephen aryan to Dave wilmarth or Brandon sanderson to name a few . If you like any of these authors you will love getting stuck into this story. I have about 30 books in my kindle reader and 430 in my audible app but although I always leave a star rating out of all those purchases I have left less than 10 written reviews so I hope that this will more than telling you about the story and ruining the plot for you will say all that needs to be said about highly recommending this series to all readers of exciting action fantasy. Ahren is on his Forest Guardian long week test by following the river until he meets up with the other at the mouth of the river. Then they continue their journey toward the Cutlass Sea to the two paladins: Fiska and Aluna. Finding them is the easy part, getting them to resolve their differences and work together so they can join the other paladins was very difficult. Ahren and Kara have the most heartrending conflict to face.
I wonder if the fact that the others companions (ancients, paladins, etc.) are so old is the reason that Ahren’s has better ideas and advice. They can’t think out-of-the-box.
Footnote: 1) The narrator’s voice of Kara doesn’t sound right. It sounds like she’s always whispering even when she’s talking normally, loudly or even giggling. Makes her sound too sweet than she really is. And towards the second half of there are several skips, blips and repeats in the narration.
Fave scenes: Ahren’s fight with the big spider, Cullen & Celsina play fighting, Ahren & Falk flying from ship to ship and Kasobo retrieving the armor.
There is too much travel and not enough plot. The books need more suspense, more lines of action that come to fruition later. Some more success, especially strategic and added power for Aiden. Maybe magic, that would be fun. I'm having a hard time liking the wolf. He needs more humility. I'm not sure but there is too much individual ego there to create a bond. To much competition and desire for being the winner at the expense of his co-partner. Maybe it's the put down humor that is keeping me from really seeing a true bond in that relationship. Over all it's a great story. Beautifully written. It's the length of time between when something really happens to move the story forward, that I began to have trouble with. Still potential to pull these books into an extrordinarly good series.
I wasn’t sure what to expect honestly in the beginning, and now I wait (impatiently) for each book to come out! These books are extremely well written and pull you into wanting more from each page! The character building and emotional complexity of each character is what I like best about the 13th Paladin series. Can’t wait for spring when the next addition comes out!
This has to be the best in the series so far! Lots happening and plenty of action and suspense. Kept me up most nights as I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Well written and thought out. Have been reading fantasy fiction for over 25years and this series has to be one of my favourites can't wait to read next one.
Very creative turns in the storyline, with lots of action and suspense, making it hard to put down. The well meaning lead characters are extraordinary, and at the same time very human, as they address their huge challenges . Looking forward to the next book!
Oh man, what a ride! Pirates, sea monsters, more pirates, a monkey stealing armor from a dark one, and a quest to save two estranged lovers from the depth of their self-destruction. Ahren is finally graduated as a forest guardian, and his relationship with Kahra couldn't be better, but will the tales of the two estranged lovers be too much for their burgeoning relationship?
I am 5 books in and enjoying every page! What a great adventure, I love the diversity in characters, and all of the various relationships within. I strongly recommend picking up book 1 if you are thinking about starting this series!!! Book 6 here I come.
I have read all books in this series and this book like previous before was fun to read. Good action and was interesting to see how Athens cohorts powers of magic or sword fighting came into play. Look forward to next book.
Read the entire series! You will love it! The characters are very well thought out and excellent sword and sorcery tales!!! Can’t wait to read the next one!!!
This series of books keeps you from putting them down and they are really realistic as the heroes are just as flawed as the villains and don't always come through without injuries.
Excellent story line, characters on a constant path of growth, both mental and physical. Intense, very descriptive action sequences. Characters are all like able, with the exception of Sven.
I was not sure when I started the first book. Now I can't wait for the next one to come out. I would recommend these books for anyone who loves adventure, monsters, evil bad guys and battles.
Once I read the first book I was hooked. Truly a favorite of mine. A series that keeps you focused on your screen for the whole day. When I buy a house I'd buy the hard copies to showcase this series of Ahren.
This one took a really interesting path for character development and relationships. I feel like it focused much more on the romantic side of things, which I've enjoyed but isn't quite what I was wanting from this series. Onto the next!
The Isles of the Cutlass Sea is such a fantastic adventure. The 13th Paladin is one of the best young adult fantasy series written. Thankfully, the translation from the original German is easy to understand.
This series is great adventure for the mind! It completely takes you in and the characters are well thought out I think! Another great installment to a great series!
