A dark sorcerer with a deadly plan attacks Gavin's adopted city. The Chain Breaker Series continues.

After capturing the sorcerer called the Apostle, Gavin decided to remain in the city of Yoran where he’s become comfortable. Work that had been plentiful has dried up and comfort becomes complacency.

While new friends help to find jobs, they’re not the kind of jobs an assassin trained to be the Chain Breaker should take. He’s trained to kill, not track down relics in a city that long ago banished magic.

When pushed to save a young boy, Gavin finds himself dealing with much more than he bargained for. A sorcerer known as the Mistress of Vines has come to Yoran. In order to stop her, he must come to understand a part of himself he was trained to ignore.

It will take an assassin without equal to stop the Mistress of Vines.

Only this time, the Chain Breaker might not be enough.

Another fast paced, magical book with the characters personalities developing further. Less focus on the protagonist and more about the “group” dynamic and the tale of two jobs..!!
Not as good as the first but still enjoyable to read. Lots more is revealed about the magic in Yoran and those who have the ability to use it.
I felt that I got to know Gavin and the others a little better throughout the story which kept the plot moving along nicely. I found it entertaining and amusing at times that some characters can be a bit dim, nobody is perfect I’m glad to read..!!
And on to the next one we go..!!

I’m really enjoying these books! I absolutely love Gavin and Wrenlow’s friendship. You can see how much they respect and care for each other. Gavin is like a big brother. Gaspar is an interesting one with quite a few secret that he’s never willing to divulge. This just like the first book is a fast paced page turner. 5 stars.

4/5 stars.

Fast, action-packed. Still a bit more tell than show in some cases but overall enjoyable. Some mysteries were deepened and revealed and others sort of fell flat. Looking forward to digging into book 3 still. Gavin isn't really a compelling MC but I'm sticking around for the supporting characters.

Competent writing, but the story itself frustrates me.

Gavin does not ask enough questions. He just takes on jobs, and the WHOLE time it is only question after question that he does not have answers to. And some things that he questions, he ignores, only to get bitten by it later.
That does not sound like an assassin to me that has been trained by the ultimate best...

Sometimes I wonder if the writer has planned anything ahead, or if he is just free flowing writing...

Thank you to author D.K. Holmberg, who provided me a digitial advanced readers copy of the book for an honest review.

The book focuses on assassin Gavin as he copes with a dark sorcerer from his past, who is attacking Gavin's adopted city. This book is the second in the Chain Breaker Series. I really liked the first book and this continuation of the series did not disappoint. Much like the first book, the protagonist is continuing to hone his skills, despite being one of the best fighters or assassins in the world, and certainly in his area of operations. The author repeatedly referenced "core strength" in both this and the prior book in the series, and spoke about the character's initial lack of acknowledgement of this core strength possibly being magical in nature. In the course of the second book, Gavin appears to embrace this idea.

This book really seems like what one might right about a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, from the point of view of one of the characters, in a "low magic" campaign. Gavin has a team he put together, which expands over the course of this book, to include more individuals uniquely equipped to deal with threats that arise; a team that is about the size of a typical Dungeons and Dragons party. One might say this has characteristics of urban fantasy, although that is typically more modern in nature. In fact, Gavin appears to me to be what would result of trying to tweak an Eldritch Knight prestige class to accommodate an assassin. One could say "core strength" is equivalent to "mana pool" or "spell power", depending on the game system you are playing, and that the depletion of the core strength referenced by the author is similar to that temporary depletion of a spellcaster using their available magic power, which regenerates over time.

The author does a great job of developing some of the secondary characters introduced in the first book, as well as introducing new ones that seem like they will be part of the ongoing story. There is still some mystery about some of the secondary characters as well as about some of Gavin's background. As in the first book, the author found a good story to tell and told the story completely, without leaving major parts unresolved. And yet, the reader is left understanding there is more to the story waiting to be told. That is the hallmark of a great series... a story completely told, yet leaving the reader wanting more.

The book talks about numerous fights, from an assassin's point of view, so there is certainly some violence in the book. Yet, the violence does not appear to be gratuitous in nature. In fact, despite being an assassin, Gavin is presented as taking care in accepting jobs, and expanding his work from his normal profile to take on other jobs, such as finding lost and kidnapped children. The book identifies the need for all of us to pay attention to our moral compasses from time to time, and to reevaluate our current path, which I think is a good message for all to hear. Moreover, the book speaks to the larger topics of revenge, rehabilitation, and reintegration. The author shows characters making changes in their lives after confronting difficult moral choices. There are a couple of minor references to sexual conduct, which appears to be pretty tame and passing in nature, certainly not graphic or gratuitous. I think it is appropriate for a mature teenage reader, and is enjoyable by young adults and adult fans of fantasy alike.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be purchasing a copy to reread in the future!

So I am not sure about this book, it had a decent story line but fell short in a few spots...

Erica aka Mistress of Vines originally didn’t offer money for the job but later in the book she said she told him to name his price that was Davel Chan...

He pesters Gasper like he’s a teenage child instead of an adult assassin, I don’t know if this is the authors attempt at humor but it’s poorly done and takes away from the story...

Why would he not talk to Imogen about the girl he fought on the way to Davel Chan’s?

Teaching Wrenlow to fight? They covered this in the first book that he tried and didn’t work, that Wrenlow just wasn’t getting better...

The fact that Gasper left out so much freaking information is a major plot hole... I get it it involves his ex wife blah blah... That was very very valuable information to the mission they were on, not just oh hey here’s a tidbit but MASSIVE information!

Because of these points is why I gave it 2 stars, the story line had a lot of potential but man some of these plot points are pretty bad!!!

I have been coming across more authors lately that seem to forget their own writing and go against something they already said! I am not sure if they don’t reread their own material or if they’re just trying to pump out material to fast....

Gavin Lorren is an assassin for hire and he arrived in the city of Yoran believing that the city had rid itself of magic and sorcerers but was soon to find out otherwise. It seemed in fact that the city was teeming with enchanters, sorcerers, magic and magically enchanted trinkets and Gavin found that many of these powerful magic wielders were children. He is hired by two different people for two different jobs, both of which were not the sort of job he usually embarked upon, however he accepted and at times it seemed as though he had taken on more than he could chew! I really loved the fast paced adventure, the quick thinking and manoeuvres Gavin uses when faced with magic and it suddenly seemed as though magic was everywhere in Yoran. Could he find the Jade Egg and could he keep his friends at the Roasted Dragon tavern safe when all he seemed to do was bring trouble down on all their heads. Gavin thought he had kept a low profile as was his way, however it seemed everyone in Yoran had heard about his exploits and his great fighting skills. Was it time to move on or did he have to stay to see this problem through? Maybe we will find out in book 3 how Gavin's life continues!

Well, the second book seems like it is just more of the first. While I enjoyed getting to meet Gavin in book one, I was willing to put off certain things since this was the first book in the series. Now though, we are in book 2 and we've met him and his crew, yet Gavin does not seem to be learning the things that life is trying to teach him. Again we find him taking jobs while not understanding who or why they are asking for his services. Again we find that he is embroiled in things that he doesn't understand, yet not because he is not intelligent, but because he just makes assumptions and does not ask questions.

At least, he is starting to think that he just MIGHT have a bit of magic. There is that.

So, if you cannot tell, this book frustrated me. There is still a lot of action, but action without purpose, or at least without knowing what the desired outcome or goal is - can be frustrating. Apparently, he has earned a reputation in Yoran. It is too bad that he can't figure out what it is about that reputation that is true.

Apparently, the next book is not yet out and that's okay. I think I'll take a small break and come back to Gavin and his crew in a while.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Gavin Lorren is still in town. While Gavin is thinking of moving on, his friends have foisted a job on him, that includes saving a child, and he is persuaded to accept the job. In the meantime, Gavin watches as some apparent thieves steal an item from a carriage in the middle of the day. The apparent theft is so brazenly executed that Gavin isn’t even sure of what he saw.

After accepting the job of finding and rescuing the child, strange things happen and Gavin and his crew begin to think there is more to this rescue than meets the eye.

Thus begins another chapter in Gavin’s life. Not a typical job for him, the rescuing of a child, Gavin seeks to untangle the mystery of what is really going on. The more involved he gets, the more tangled the web. If you enjoyed the first book of this series, you will most certainly enjoy this tale. It is well-written with strong characters, great world development and some twists to boot. Pick up your copy and get involved with Gavin. You’ll be glad you did.

I will post this same review for all three books.
I've read the first three books of this series and have decided to stop. Very unusual for me.
Initially, I was inclined to give the first book three stars. It was far too chatty and repeated references to looking inside oneself for strength to meet the various challenges began to grate on me.
I decided to read books 2 and 3 in spite of my initial irritation. My initial annoyances began to fade. References to finding one's strength took on new dimensions and the chatter seemed to diminish (or I became accustomed).
I reassessed my initial rating and will now give it 4 stars. This series is not for me at this stage in my life. I expect that I would have been more amenable to this writing style as a younger man. The story lines are strong and diverse. The challenges are growing in scope and danger and the characters have begun to be better defined. I am sure there are individuals who will find this series quite to their liking.

Not sure

Good story, but WAY too much repetitive filler: enchanter enchanter enchanter enchanter enchantment enchantment enchantment enchantment enchantment core reserves core core reserves core reserves blahblahblahblahblah, ACK!!! In some ways the writing style reminds me of Terry Goodkind and Jean Auel (everything after her first book, The Clan of the Cave Bear). There’s a lot of tiresome repeating of explanations, too much silly chatter, continuity errors, things like that. I’m glad there aren’t very many grammar or spelling issues. (Not saying that I could write a better novel - I know I can’t - but editing/proof reading is one of my things.)

It took a lot out of me to finish reading this thing, so I’m gonna take a break and read stuff by other authors. And take a nap.

characters bicker throughout the book

The author continues the story and has the main character start to build a “crew” much like a D & D game with mystery swirling around each of the characters abilities. This is interesting, but reading the story with the characters continuous bickering and arguing to this level is annoying at best. Normally, I can read a story for hours, but I found myself having to take long breaks as I was frustrated by this constant annoyance. If you are comfortable listening to friends or family bicker in front of you, your enjoyment will be more than mine. I was not impressed.

A good book. Clean content. Wasn't as invested in this second book because it is sometimes hard to follow the logic and conclusions Gavin draws about the characters and events going on around him. He doesn't really lead you to his conclusions, rather they seem to come out of nowhere at times. Also, the antagonist seems to come from nowhere but is referenced to a past event - possibly a book I haven't read yet? If not a previous book then there isn't enough back story to have buy-in. A bit tricky to sort out relationships between all the players in this book.

Starting to really like this series.

I held off writing a review until I read the second book. This series is really growing on me. Holmberg does a really good job keeping the reader's attention by building up just enough suspense and intrigue to make it hard to stop reading, but doesn't go so far that it turns maddening. Very good character development that had me caring what happened to them all by the end of this book. Strongly recommend for both new fantasy readers and us grizzled veterans.

The Chain Breaker Book 2 (The Jade Egg)

Several times I found myself wanting to stop reading this book and be done with the series. But once I start a book, I’m destined to complete it. The book is interesting and makes for a very good series but it’s all the double questions the characters put fort and answers that refused to be given toward situations that could have been spared. This book is like a modern day back yard tv series with endless verbiage that benefits….no one. Just answer the dang questions and stop keeping secrets.

This was an excellent book. Even though I don't know how it's possible I like Gavin more after reading this book than I did the first one. He does seem to keep getting his friends tied up into new trouble but it wasn't all his fault. I love watching his personality shift and change. There's a lot more info about Gaspar in this one. That was fun. I recommend the book and the series.

I received an ARC and I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Good Read

Good storyline and character development. Each book being a single uncomplicated quest with just a few sidebars could be improved. Previous books I’ve read were better. This series(first two books read so far) seems like it was more of a junior book. It was well written but needs more development and complication. This could have easily been a 5 star if it didn’t feel like a one quest book and more of an ongoing story. We’ll see where it goes after the next book.

3-3.5 stars

Liked the book, but I do hope Gavin starts to listen to his inner voice more. Most of his problems deal with him ignoring that "something was off". And for being a master assassin, he sure does not plan out his jobs in greater detail, it's more like planning by the seat of your pants. But the action is good and curious to find out what king of magic he does possess so I'll probably read on in the series. :)

Overall a phenomenal book that gets you hooked reasonably quickly and then keeps you interested. The amount of action is a good balance to not have constant fighting that would make it boring but with enough to be enjoyable. I was originally concerned with how these books would flow as a series but after reading a couple I can say all I have read are tied into the previous and future books masterfully.

Yoran isn't supposed to have magic users, at least not according to the treaty. However, when Gavin is hired to rescue a boy from the Captain's keep, that boy turns of to be a girl and an enchanter. He is also hired to find a jade egg. When be gets a lead in it, he's attacked by sorcerers. So much for the treaty. Now he has to figure out why the different magic users are out to kill each other and the captain.

Gavin returns to the dragon to find Jessica has found a job for him. But who is this women who wants him to rescue her kidnapped son from the captains fortress. Plus he also has a job from a sorcerer who wants his stolen Jade Egg back.
Want follows is a truly thrilling adventure for Gavin and his friends with plenty of surprises and twists and turns.
Would definitely recommend this story

This was a slight improvement over that last story with better pacing at the expense of any internal character conflicts. We get a few new world building elements, such as enchanters (sorcerors had been previously introduced). Over all, the world became a lot more interesting but the characters less so. Still it was a quick and easy read even if not particularly memorable.

An exciting continuation of the first Chain Breaker book.

His story brings Gavin to Yoran where he learns more about his power. He must work through a large number of plot lines to get to the place where he learns more about his own powerful and makes a decision leading to the next book in the series.

A very goodread!

Exciting story line, magic and more.

An exciting read with many twists and turns, slowly revealing Gavins origins and powers.
His morality is key to understanding the training instilled by Tristan, going against all he learnt under such violent circumstances that he wasn't who he had been trained to be.
Looking forward to the next revelation.

Could be so much better

The authors repetitive stating of facts he has given previously feels like fillers. The main character has some serious blind spots and his abilities often come off like deux ex machina. Still finished it because plot is interesting. The secondary characters need more development also. They all have potential.

Okay, quick read.

Though Gaspar annoyed me with the whole, "watch it boy" whenever Gavin was trying to ask questions and get a better understanding of what is going on. Like, dude, he needs to know what's up and understand the situation, keeping him in the dark doesn't help anyone. 🙄 His questions were reasonable and the constant trying to shut him down got old.

"The Jade Egg" finds Gavin being hired to do two jobs he wouldn't normally take. One job has Gavin searching for a young boy after being hired by a desperate mother and the other has Gavin hunting down the titular jade egg. This is a great sequel to "The Chain Breaker" and filled with action.
