Witches who play with fire are bound to get burned.
It's my second year at the academy, and I have to prove I'm not the villain people think I am. Now that I've joined House Spark, I've learned three things:
First, I'm a fire witch who's impervious to flames. Second, my magic is nearly impossible to control. Third, everyone's scared of what I could become.
Turns out every fire witch in history was corrupted by her magic, and I'm next in line if I don't figure out how to keep my flames from turning into a firestorm.
Welcome to the Academy of Shadowed Magic, home of the last witch in the world.
Excellent 1) The female lead grew and matured while remaining multi-dimensional, relatable and likable
Good 1) The settings were again rendered beautifully 2) The series arc continued to progress 3) The story had a well-developed beginning, a middle and end 4) The female best friend character's characterization became consistent 5) Decent people on the side of 'good' were added or revealed thru expanding their role 6) The really bad messaging in the first book was dropped
Mediocre 1) The world-building was still broad and generic 2) The world continued to be trite 3) The storytelling was less shallow but still kinda plain 4) The male best friend characters characterization was better but still not good 5) The romance did not become compelling to the end but it did avoid ickiness, insta-lust and insta-love
Bad 1) The teaching methods were still ridiculous 2) Having the lead female in second year after only completing a single semester made no sense
The female lead's complexity really makes the story.
The character development continued and strengthened as Clem made her way towards greater maturity with the trials she encountered and the friendships she surprised herself with as she had been such a (defensive) loner up until this point in her life.
The next book is not yet out and I am So Sad!! I want to see her next steps towards her goal. You will have to read it yourself to find out what that goal is because I’m not going to give it away. I’m hoping the next book has a wee bit of romance happening, that might have started in this book.
good witches don’t cheat (academy of shadowed magic book 2)
good witches don’t cheat (academy of shadowed magic book 2) ~~ The second book did not disappoint! It’s packed with action, secrets, and just the right amount of budding romance. I loved how Clementine’s character continued to grow while facing even bigger challenges, and her inner struggles made her feel real and relatable. The banter between characters kept things fun, even as the plot thickened. The pacing felt just right, keeping me engaged from start to finish. By the time I reached the final page, I was already desperate for the next book. I honestly loved this installment just as much as the first—maybe even more!
