Peak Performance is the definitive guide to the great sporting legacy of Ingleborough and the Yorkshire Dales’ Three Peaks.
This beautiful hardback book unveils the complete sporting history of one of the country’s most iconic mountains. More than 200 years of athleticism, perseverance and tenacity are brought to life through personal stories, previously unpublished photographs and several new artworks and illustrations.
Long the stage for the world class Three Peaks Race and 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross, Ingleborough and its sister mountains are already familiar territory to Europe’s most intrepid adventurers and elite sportsmen and women. The history of these two iconic events, along with that of the Yorkshire Dales’ original ultra, the Fellsman and the Ingleborough Mountain Race are uncovered in greater depth than ever before, with testimonies from the pioneers who created them and the selfless individuals who paved the way for others to excel, along with some of the extraordinary athletes who have made history on the mountains.
I found this a fascinating read, which packs a lot into its 144 pages. It is quite local, covering Ingleborough's sporting legacy. But the country shows, fell races and the Three Peaks bike race have an impact far wider than just Yorkshire. The book is very well produced, and also well written and illustrated, (although printing historical photos on non-gloss paper can sometimes be an issue, but only on a couple here). What I did particularly like was the author's approach to moving through history on each topic. As I read it I was thinking that I liked being given more specific details in the early history of a topic and progressively less so as we got more current (so, for example, the Three Peaks fell race this millennium is covered in a page, which is fine). Recommended.
A wonderful well presented book full of fascinating well researched information about events and the characters, some of whom I came across, connected with the various Ingleborough events. Picked it up and didn't put it down until I had finished. Brought back great memories of my running days in the 3 Peaks and Fellsman. A must read if you have taken part in any the events covered by Peak Performance.
