When Alicia's lab mate dies, there's something about the official story that doesn't make sense. She doesn't have time to look into it though, she has only two weeks to finish a paper, prepare a seminar, and ace a job interview.
But her questions about the death are bugging her, and her concentration isn't helped by her new friend Martha doing a bit of 'Miss Marpling'.
And then Alicia herself comes under suspicion.
Enjoy the twists and turns of this new cosy mystery set in the beautiful sandstone buildings of Sydney University.
'Great story ... Had to keep reading to see whodunit!!'
'The Martha-Alicia moments were so soothing, like the granny scenes from a Miyazaki anime.'
RJ (Ruth) Amos has a PhD in Chemistry and has taught and researched chemistry for about ten years at two Australian universities, meeting some fascinating people and hearing almost-incredible stories. She decided to start writing those stories in novel form because she feels that others would enjoy hearing about them just as much as she does. She’s added a murder or two because that makes the story that much more fun. Ruth loves reading a good mystery in front of an open fire, walking along the beach with her husband in both winter and summer, and chatting with her two grown-up children, and she is convinced that Tasmania, where she lives, is the best place on God’s good earth.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A different city, a very different situation for the amateur detective, who wanted nothing to do with the suspicious death. Well written characters, enough detail to place the mystery in a believable setting. Almost like the chemistry research that the heroine was performing, like preparing an experiment and then stepping back and allowing the process to continue at its own pace. Again, there were lots of potential suspects and the ending was especially satisfying, with justice being administered. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a little science with their sleuthing.
The final book in the Deadly Miss series was the best in the series. Fast-paced and well-written! Again, the author kept me turning pages to find out what happens next! I certainly hope RJ Amos is working on more!
I've enjoyed this series with clever plot lines, good writing, and enough actual science to add extra interest. I would like more character and plot development to add depth and stretch things out some. These books are over before I'm ready for them to be done.
I think this is my favourite of the Deadly Miss books so far. Alicia seems to be growing into her character - much less annoying. She is maturing in her task of "Miss Marpling" with her investigations being much more natural and accidental. I liked the flashback style, that allowed the important characters in Tasmania to remain in the story even though it was set in Sydney. I also liked the motherly character of Martha, even though she seemed much too close to Alicia in only a couple of weeks - in fact most of the friendships seemed a little too fast in that respect.
I hope Alicia takes the 1 year job in Sydney - after all, how many murders can a small city have? And then she will be offered a similar job in Tassie or another city if she wants it I'm sure :-)
