This is the second in a series called Fairmile by the author of famous Tudor and Plantagenet women novels. This is different because it is of ordinary women and men during the ill fated reign of Charles the first (1625-1649). The divide between those with power and money and the poverty of the lower classes is dramatic. Alinor, a poor woman, falls in love with a mysterious and well to do man who travels from France to spy and rescue Charles, a king battling Cromwell and his parliament. It does not end well. Twenty years have passed and in 1670 Alinor and James meet again. Mysteries, children and new characters flesh out their continued story. There may be a third book to come in the series. Gregory is meticulous in her research and details of the times.

I loved all of her Tudor books, they were stand alone. But it did help reading them in order it kinda helped to know the history to know what might happen next I think this book would have been better if I had read the first book to understand the character thinking. Although she does write so as a reader, I can pick up and go for it now. do however plan to go back and read the first book and the third book. I would definitely recommend this book.I have enjoyed all of Philippe Gregory’s books. She does her research to make her characters align with the times they are living. This book definitely shows the different status the wealthy as well as the destitute and how they must conform to survive the times.

I’ve read both Tidelands and Darktides now and have enjoyed both immensely. I just came here to say that I have never enjoyed a more diabolically manipulative character as I did in Livia in Darktides. And oh the irony for our dear misguided James Avery, who is at turns a tender lover and empathetic who can turn arrogant and misogynistic when it suits him. I listened to both on Audible and the narrator was superb; I will never hear the word antiquities in any way other than how Livia speaks. I’m very much looking forward to reading Dawnland, but I have found that a little space between to decompress and sit with the stories and read something lighter in between has worked for me.

Ms. Gregory is an amazing storyteller and I’m so grateful for her.

This book is a continueation of Tidelands which takes place in Sussex, and was a good story. Things take a downturn in Darktides and it seems that no more matter how they try, they can't seem to get it together, but stay with it. It will not end the way you think it will, but the way it should, at least in my opinion. See what you think.

The story was good. I like the way Greagory progresses the timeline.
