October 10, 2011 began as a sunny, warm day. However, after a fun hike to Union Falls, the weather turned on us! We were caught in intermittent snow, hail and rain! By the time we reached the fork at Bechler Canyon; Christian and I were in Stage 2 hypothermia!... The snow had covered our tracks, so which direction should we go?!... Confused, I suggested that we go the opposite direction that Kyle suggested. My suggestion turned out to be the WRONG direction! A 14 mile hike turned into a grueling 22 miles, with Christian and I fighting "HIDE and DIE" hypothermia for many of those miles!... Kyle March took charge (later winning a Boy Scout Heroism Award for his courage and leadership in the face of danger and life-threatening challenges)! At 2:15 am, when we had not returned to the car, my husband, Val, who was waiting with two younger grandsons began driving to St. Anthony to alert Search and Rescue. Not knowing whether we were dead or alive, tears blurred Val’s vision!!... This is Book One in the SURVIVOR series, which chronicles the miracles, prayers and protection that attended us that night; as well as the faith, courage and perseverance that was required during this high adventure! (This was the 2nd big event which led to Val's first serious life-threatening hospital stay!) Imagine, Kyle and Christian March and Diana Johnson were the ones rescued from Stage 1 and Stage 2 (HIDE and DIE) hypothermia; yet Val was the one admitted to the hospital 3 days later!!)
