I’m in hell, but some witch I know calls it Arizona.
At least Tucson’s an excellent place to hide from the hefty bounty on my head, now that the entire supernatural Community knows that I’m the last phoenix. Catching me comes with a set-for-life kind of price tag.
I don’t blame the bounty hunters; business is business after all. But I’m beyond pissed at the maniacal mage who outed me and caused this whole mess.
Trouble seems to find me wherever I go, though. Only a month into my desert exile, a grim reaper shows up and dies on my doorstep. The necromancers are trying something new, and if they get their hands on me and my resurrection ability, both the human and the fae world will be facing a mad man’s terrifying reign.
Oh, and did I mention I’m being stalked?
If you loved Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunters, Ilona Andrews’s Hidden Legacy, or Seanan McGuire’s InCryptid series, then you will devour The Last Phoenix series.
WINGS OF WINTER is the 3rd book of 7 inThe Last Phoenix series, a kickass urban fantasy containing fast-paced action, snarky humor, sexy grim reapers, zombies, a hearty dose of swearing, and a healthy splash of romance.
Stephanie Mirro writes bold, adventurous fantasy for readers who love a little heat with their heartbreak, and maybe a splash of chaos. As a proudly neurodivergent author, she creates fierce, complex characters—neurodivergent ones included—who tackle impossible odds armed with sharp wit and questionable life choices. When not crafting mythology-rich worlds or morally grey heroes, Stephanie can be found bingeing heist movies, searching for her next caffeine fix, or accidentally setting things on fire in the name of creativity.
The books keep getting better. The writing style is not so much, I keep rolling my eyes when something that's established, like how shifting works for her, is explained again. It's book 3. Your readers, if invested, would pick this up already. Please stop treating us like we are reading an intro. Anyway, I won't remove a star for it as you can ignore it with enough practice.
FMC is growing on me with every book. The MMC...well can't help like him, he is a charmer 😉.
The story starts some time after the last book. There is still danger, and it's following her. There's more action, death, discovery, and spice.... We finally get some steamy action, even if it is short and restful. So more steam, a little outter smut.
It ends on a cliffhanger and an epilogue from his POV, which is a nice touch.
Now, where has our little bird flown too 🤔. Onto book 4 to find out... maybe after a break from the writing style... maybe
An unlikely love story but it works and I want more.
This is the third book in this series. I've really enjoyed them so far. Each book is better than the last. This is a slow burn paranormal romance. There is some great world building and the characters have really grown on me. I like our heroine; she's feisty, impulsive and somewhat irreverent yet she always seems to get the job done. Her love interest is more of a stickler for the rules and the match is unexpected for him but he wants her just the same. This book finished with a huge, shiny hook and I can't wait to dive into book four. Shame there's a two month wait.
Every time I read a book with this character, Veronica, I just love her more. In this latest, she’s back in Miami, and they are all still on the hunt for William and the Risen. We also get a couple new characters that I’m liking. The tension really heats up in this one between Veronica and Thane, and I am excited to see what comes next for them. Speaking of what comes next, I am also excited to see what comes next after the events at the end of this one, including the epilogue. This is a great urban fantasy with a romantic element, and this latest is a great addition to the series. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I never thought I would love a reaper but, who can resist Thane's hotness???... I can't!!! 😁 #lovegrumpyalphaholes He and Veronica make a perfect match but they can't be together, even if they love each other... Can they??? 🤔😩😭 This installment is amazing, action-packed, unexpected twists and turns, full of intense emotions and a new character that can finally answer Veronica's questions about her origins... Not that the damn unseelie fae will let her have them!!! 🤬 Can't wait for the next book, need to know where these growing feelings will take our beloved couple... And how they will kick William's **s!!! 😉🥰❤️
I blew through the first 3 books in just two days. I couldn’t stop reading. V is great and I love slowly finding out more and more about her. I’m excited to see where book 4 takes us.
This book is full of action with a love story mixed in. The way Than and Veronica feel For each other is obvious just waiting for them to figure it our.
Great twist at the end of a fabulous story! New characters, new challenges, and a surprise ending made this a book I couldn't put down. Now I will be impatiently waiting for the next one....
Absolutely love this series!!! Hate to have to wait for the last two but have it noted on my calendar. Thank the stars we still have writers such as this one who don’t think they have to add page after page of sex scenes. Just the right amount of romance and action to keep you glued to it. I would recommend this to all ages. From teen to older readers like myself.
I think it’s the overall plot that keeps me going on this series. The individual scenes and character interactions are…artificially angsty. Feels like a teen drama at times. But the story arc apart from the characterization is decent.
This is book three of The Last Phoenix series and Veronica Neill is stuck in Tucson, Arizona, to avoid all the bounty hunters and opportunist members of the supernatural community that the Unseelie fae William set on her, when he revealed her true identity as the last phoenix to one and all. William has been building an army of Risen, using a large group of necromancers, mages and fae, wanting to take over the fae realm and get the winter court to be in charge. V managed to destroy part of his plans in Miami, when she used her phoenix powers of rebirth and the fire that accompanied it, to eliminate most of the Risen and some of the mages and fae who were helping him. She wants him caught and would gladly kill him for putting her life in Miami in peril and taking away the comfort of her friend Kit and her sort of relationship with reaper Thane on hold!
She has only been in Tucson for a month, when she steps back into danger, when she passes another member of the supernatural community, of which there should have been none. When she loses sight of him, she gives up but then finds him being attacked by some of William’s mages, far too many for him to cope with and they have a weapon that can be used against reapers and even angels, which is deadly! The reaper is killed and this brings V back to Miami and the headquarters of the DEA and Archangel Adam’s office. It also reconnects her with her personal reaper Thane, who she has definitely been missing. Her ex-witch friend Kit now has a new girlfriend called Angela and is in love, in a really short time scale! She has missed out on so much, but her life is still in danger. The necromancers and William want to get their hands on V, to use her powers of regeneration and resurrection, to take over the fae and human worlds.
Adam tried to have the bounty on V cancelled, but there are still others out there, who are listening to the promises William is making them, to continue to hunt her down, no matter who else gets injured or killed in the process. More reapers and even some angels have now gone missing or been killed and it seems the necromancers are trying to use their powerful magical powers to make stronger Risen, like they made with shifters who could still use their animal forms once dead and being controlled by William and his minions. Alliances are needed within the supernatural community if they are to defeat this ever growing army. V has another issue, when she realises she is being stalked by a cloaked figure and this brings about a shocking revelation, that reveals far more than she knows about herself and her true identity. Adam has agreed to tell her more, but not until they deal with William and his necromancers. Whether they will still be alive after walking into another of his hideouts and figuring out someone is still leaking details from their end, causing more problems than there should be. Watch out for the fierce Kit, when she steps up to the plate at V’s side! Things are hotting up in V’s life, both personally and around her phoenix identity. I can’t wait to see what happens next and the preview of the next book, just makes me even more eager to get ahold of the next book! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I'm loving this series there's so much happening u just fly through the pages eager to find out what happens next 😍 Veronica and Thane are finally giving into their feelings for each other even if they both know that perhaps forever is not on the cards for them.
Book 3 starts where 2 left off with Veronica in hiding in the desert slowly going stir crazy with no contact to her real life and going by the name Maddison Fox. Living where no other community members are leaves her feeling pretty lonely but for someone with a hefty bounty on her head it's the safest. So when she crosses paths with another supernatural it shocks her and she instantly wants to know who he is but he disappears quickly. When she comes face to face with him again it's to find him being attacked by necromancer mages. With her cover blow she finds herself back in Adam's office and in the middle of the war that's gotten ten times worse in her absence. Refusing to leave again she joins in trying to find a way to bring the necromancer Fae William and his whole operation down. Thane and Veronica become closer well as close as u can in the middle of a war 😉 when she discovers she may not be the last phoenix after all after discovering someone stalking her left a feather behind. When the final battle goes down Ivan the other Phoenix is captured and through doing so the necromancers could siphon his power to raise thousands of dead at once, Veronica acts without thinking and follows William and the Phoenix through a portal which snaps closed behind her. With no idea where she's headed V has only one thing on her mind and that's to save the other phoenix.
„Wings of Winter“ is the third installment in Stephanie Mirro’s supernatural urban fantasy seven book series “The Last Phoenix”, which follows Veronica Neill fate as very special kind of phoenix, an avian shifter (Falcon) working in which she would describe as ‘acquisition and recovery of magical artifacts’, only her enemies would dare to call her a thief, with the pertinent consequences 😉. But being a thief is the last of her past problems, the present problem involves an unknown stalker and some very unpleasant necromancers.
Veronica is gone into hiding, trying to throw her pursuers of her scent, bounty hunters are hard to fool, thus the desert seems like a good choice to lay down, after all is… deserted… until the grim reaper dies right at her door, and she is officially busted. The necromancers are fully intended in getting her resurrection gift, no matter what, even over her own dead body, after all….she will come back. The gloves are out, because letting the necromancers win, could be the end of both realms alike, human and fae.
Stephanie Mirro’s original blend of history, mythical lore, fast-paced action and good developed characters thrown in the middle of unexpected situations flows into the story and makes this new series already a must for fans of good-written intelligently constructed UF with a taste for snarky comments, witty humor, the whole menagerie of paranormal and a very sexy DEA (Death Enforcement Agency) agent on the side 😉
Our heroine is not fond of hiding out, but with the rather substantial price on her head, she sees it as the only chance to stay alive. Of course, that only works if she can stay hidden...
This is book three of the series. Probably not the best place to start, but I am pleased to say the story still stands up well even if you have no read the earlier books. You will be missing some of the backstory, but all the essential bits come through just fine.
This is an urban fantasy story with a rather unique protagonist. A phoenix character is not something you see very often (if ever!). That gave it several points right off the bat. The story is also well written and easy to read with a fascinating and well developed setting that offers familiar place names with some decidedly unfamiliar features. The characters are also very well done and likeable, particularly our heroine who is tough and smart, but more than a little outgunned. All that combines for a fast paced story that grabs your attention at the start and never lets go. Overall, a highly enjoyable story and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for review purposes.
Veronica hates being in Tuscon and having to hide her identity. But soon she discovers the enemy has found an even more sinister way to get the upper hand: they know how to source reaper magic. I will not reveal anything else, as the story is ongoing and Veronica gets more and more bits of information about her parents and heritage.
I still enjoy the books, but I do feel the arc is drawn out. I notice I am skimming some parts. The series will consist of 7 books; I guess the story could be told in less. The writing is really good and I love the characters but I am a bit done with the Risen and evil William. I am interested in Veronica and her heritage and relationships with Thane and Kit. This book ends on a cliffhanger, but the next book will be out in no time.
PS: still love the beautiful covers!

This is a series that I fell in love with and breathlessly listened to it. This third book is not different - finished it in 2 days and it was a wonderfully entertaining story. I suggest you read/listen to the other two books first, because it helps a lot to get to know the people, places, universe. The worldbuilding is quite nice. This book in particular is even more action-packed than the first two and there are all kinds of plot twists that I didn't expect. My only complaint is that the next book isn't out in audio yet. I'm unsure if I want to wait for it or continue the series as ebook. I would miss the narrator if I choose the ebooks, because she definitely blew life into the main character.
This story is amazing!! The beginning was a little slow at first, but it picked up quickly. I love the world the author has created; it's fulled with details and interesting histories. The characters are always a delight and it was fun to meet Angela. I enjoyed the twists and turns of this story, learning more about what Veronica knows (and doesn't know) about herself and doing some light realm traveling. Plus the growing romance with a certain reaper... I am so looking forward to the next books!!
I love the narrator!! I hope she narrates the rest of the series! She does a fantastic job. She is articulate, funny, and really gets into the characters!!
First off, if you didn't add the audiobooks of this series to your library, go do that now. You're doing yourself a disservice by not hearing V's voice in your head whilst you read. Everyone needs that flash of sass and diva class during the journey. Second of all, the Phoenix isn't the only character with the ability to heat readers up from the inside. The Thane Train is a real steam engine! Finally, take some magnesium or some other muscle relaxer, because we have some inTENSE, buttpuckering action going on in here! And you HAVE to get the next book after or....
This series just gets better and better as each book comes out. This one was a riot and full of action, danger and parts of a few secrets revealed just for fun. I was hooked form the beginning as I thought that the story would just be slow as Veronica is in "hell" but then it went crazy and I read it in one sitting. It was sooo hard to put down. I had to see what happened next. I was not disappointing and love the ending and need to see what comes next. The hints were just mean at the end.
V was bored as heck in Arizona and trouble always finds her dragging her bale into that the fight against the mages, Risen and Fae. I like this kick azz lady who is the last Female Phoenix and wish the slow burn that is her desire for the Reaper Thane could progress but she has to have a man who can impregnate her when the time is right, sigh details, details. The vampire queen and the Fae queen are as arrogant as the Angels. We’ll see how long it is before the Risen cross into their territory.
Holy crap! This one is a barn burner! A real sit on the edge of your seat and chew fingernails barn burner. How many times can Veronica be caught and somehow manage to either escape or get rescued? What is going to happen between Thane and Veronica? Especially now has been given his wings? Where did that portal take her and is V going to be able to save Ivan from that god awful William? So many questions so it’s on to the next book to find my answers!!
I am addicted to this series. Veronica is in hiding in Arizona until she becomes aware that the necromancers are up to no good again. She returns with a weapon that can easily kill grim reapers. Once again, she teams up with that ‘sexy-as-sin’ grim reaper to stop the necromancers. However, now that the necromancers know Veronica is a phoenix, they want her. When Veronica convinces a new friend to join them, the new friend gets taken instead of Veronica. We all know Veronica will do anything to help her friends. I also liked how we got Thane’s input at the end!
I’m loving this series it’s a fantastic urban fantasy but it consists of 7 books I just don’t know how this author is going to do it but I’m looking forward to reading them all. I loved the characters, the storyline and the plot it’s full of action, adventure, danger and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages. Sorry guys no spoilers but if you like badass heroines and sexy guys well I believe that this book/ series is for you and I definitely recommend this book.
Veronica is hiding out in Arizona when she stumbles on a reaper being attacked by mages. She takes his body back to Adam who reveals that the necromancers are targeting reapers and angels. Veronica and Thane help out by getting the local pack and the head Vampiress to agree to help. But will it be enough? And what is Adam not telling her about phoenixes?
Loved this book. Veronica falling for Thane was perfect. And Kit? Girl is kick ass. So fun!
Veronica is now hiding out in Arizona and needs to figure out exactly what she’s going to do. The risen are spreading more and there’s more to learn. I still have a lot of questions and want the next book so badly. The romance is pretty slow burn and still simmering. I’m hopping it’ll heat up more soon. The world is amazing and the story is so much fun. I can’t wait to see where things are going from here.
I love this series the more we learn just makes the world come alive. Our fmc as is our handsome reaper and a few other characters. Also get some new characters Someone you love someone hates him we may not be sure of. Our fmc isn't in AZ long lol and gets to return to Miami. Yes you guessed it, trouble found her! She returns to her friend and aiding the angels and reapers, because now the necromancer are killing reapers!
A cliffhanger, noooo! But what a cliffhanger it is!!! Did not see that coming until the very end. Some unexpected twists, that really made this an exciting read. Great to see the character growth of Veronica, hopefully she will get some answers in the next book.
Just when things finally seem to be looking up for Veronica, things get so much worse. Things are getting increasingly complicated, the mages, the undead, a secret society of bad guys, a secret guardian, feelings… pesky feelings. Veronica has to make some serious decisions and the consequences of those decisions may just be catastrophic.
I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for the next one to see what will happen next. Veronica is everything that you need and want in a heroine and Thane will make you wish your own personal hero was like that. I laughed, cried and was on the edge of my seat throughout this book. I would love to see more of Kit and Angela as well as how Ivan is going to heal.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
