Meade Lake #3

In Winters Past

Rate this book
From the time I can remember, it was always the three of us. Me, Tommy, and Shane.

We were young, doing things we shouldn't have been doing.

They say the water here in Meade Lake freezes four feet deep. But that winter had been unseasonably warm...

After we lost Tommy, Shane packed up and moved on, leaving me to figure it all out by myself. To figure out who I was without my two best friends.

But now, Shane is back in Meade Lake. He’s changed, but under that cold, hardened exterior, I can still see a hint of my best friend.

The boy I once loved.

We’re reliving our glory years, laughing at the memories, sorting through the pain. And each time, he stands a little bit closer, lingers a little bit longer.

But with every touch, I feel that ice-cold barrier form around my heart.

He showed me once that he could walk away and never look back. I can’t give him that chance again.

A celebration which takes a devastating turn, forcing one individual to make a heartbreaking decision. In Winters Past is a slow burn best friends-to-lovers emotional read. Seamlessly transitioning readers between the past and the present, Danae Colbert transcends readers throughout a journey of grief, guilt, pain, and healing. An enjoyable read.

In Winters Past is the third title in the Meade Lake series. I’m really enjoying these stories in the Lake Meade world, and Jules and Shane’s story was an emotional and captivating second chance love story of friendship, love and grief.

This was beautifully written story and captures your attention with this emotional and angsty romance. I just feel that the ending and resolution was rushed and could have been explored more.

In Winters Past is a good read. It's book three in the Meade Lake series. It can be read as a standalone. I have read the first two and have fallen and love with Meade Lake and was excited to get back there with this story. Jules and Shane were best friends and heading towards something more when tragedy happens. Shane deals with it by leaving town. Eleven years later he is back in town. These two have so much to deal with but they have a strong connection and chemistry. This one is the great second chance read with a lot of feelings.

The past 11 years, Jules has managed to move on with her life and be as happy as she can be. Since her world changed abruptly and her best friend walked away from her from a terrible tragedy. But, Shane is back and she isn't all that happy about it. Life in Meade Lake without Shane had been lonely but she moved on. But here Shane is, and he's everywhere her and her friends are. Their reunion is rocky, but Shane has made it clear that he's just in town for work.

After reading the first 2 books in the series, I knew I needed Jules' book. What these two have been through, heartbreaking and just plain sad. Running away from self guilt never really made him forget how much he loved Meade Lake and his love and friendship with Jules. While they work on their friendship again, their feelings grow stronger and stronger everyday. But, Shane is supposed to leave again, but at least this time, she's mentally prepared for the exit. This story was pretty heartfelt, sad and heartwarming. I would totally recommend this series, it just gets better and better.

Shane's back and Grey's not really ready to see him. Too bad the town seems set to conspire against her, and soon she's running into him while on the job. But, though she may have had to see him again, she doesn't want his friendship or a second chance for him to leave her with another broken heart.

Time (and meddling townspeople) have a way of softening one's heart, though. Will Grey's heart soften toward her former best friend? Will she ever find out why Shane left her just when they were supposed to start their future together?

This one is a heartfelt tearjerker. The same tragedy that tore them apart took on even more significance and Shane bared his soul to Grey, and I felt my own tears falling. But in the end, I can happily say I loved reading as Shane and Grey got the second chance and the happiness they so richly deserved.

Taylor Danae Colbert is a fairly new author to me, in fact this is only the second book I have read by her and I’m really struggling to understand why she hasn’t crossed my radar before now, I’m certainly going to be checking out other works by this very talented author as soon as time permits.
This is a story about second chances and friendship, it’s a heartfelt romance that touched me on so many levels and it captivated me from the first page to the final line. I was in engrossed in Shane and Grey’s story and there was no putting down until I had read the final words. You know a book is special when it stays with you long after the final words have been read and this book In Winters Past you get those very special feelings. Shane and Grey grew up in Meade Lake but a tragic accident has Shane moving to California to live his dream, problem was that dream was meant to be for Grey and him so when he come back home for his brothers wedding at the Willington Resort he really doesn’t know how Grey or how the friends he left behind will greet him. Grey can’t believe the boy who stole a piece of her heart as well as her dream is back n town and she does her utmost to avoid him but Shane has realised what he did wrong and he is determined put things right.
Will the past be to much for Shane and Grey or will the secrets from the past make them stronger, I guess you need to to read the book to find that out.
Looking forward to reading more from the residents of Meade Lake as well as looking up other books by the very talented Taylor Danae Colbert.

In Winters Past totally destroyed my emotions on every level, and I'll never forget it. Jules & Shane were best friends when tragedy hit them through their third best friend, Shane headed out of town without Jules, leaving her all alone to move on. Now he's back for his brother's wedding, and Jules has no desire to see him, yet, he's everywhere. I have to say that I was fully on Jules' side because to me, he acted selfishly by running, leaving her to deal with everything on her own. Now that doesn't sound like a best friend does it?! They start to talk, spend time together, and even get closer but there's an expiration date since he will be leaving again, and she doesn't want to be hurt again, so it's not as easy as it sounds. Yeah secrets are revealed that make things look different, but I had a hard time with him abandoning her. Of course I'm not a girl who forgives easily because that's just me, but I won't lie and say that this story didn't hit my tear ducts because it totally did, so you know, I have issues I suppose or most likely Taylor Danae Colbert is just that brilliant. So get your tissues & hit those one click buttons as I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

5 star review of In Winters Past by Taylor Danae Colbert (Meade Lake #3)
Taylor Danae Colbert is a relatively new author to me and I will certainly be looking into her other books as soon as time allows. The writing was strong and I found myself whisked away to Meade Lake such was the descriptive writing.
In Winters Past is Grey and Shane's story and it was an entertaining read that held me from the first to the last chapter. Aft-er tragedy struck, Shane left Grey and Meade Lake behind to follow his dreams. Returning for his brother’s wedding he has no idea how his former friends and Grey will be when they see him.
As secrets are revealed will it bring them together or tear them apart? This is a story of love and friendship, a second chance if yo will and although there were times when I was a little frustrated, overall this book left me with a smile on face.
Can Shane and Grey come to terms with the past, forgive the hurts and take another chance at finding happiness together? One click and find out.

Grey was still reeling from a devastating loss when her best friend Shane left her and his hometown behind and she was left having to pick up the pieces of her life alone. Even though more than a decade has passed when he returns for his brother’s wedding it brings up all the pain like it happened yesterday and is counting down the days until he leaves once again.

Shane regrets not only the events that caused him to leave town but the way he left as well. When he sees Grey the feelings between them are stronger than ever but if they are going to have a future together, they must first overcome the past.

Although their journey took us on quite the emotional ride after everything that Grey and Shane have been through I really enjoyed seeing them get the happiness they both deserve.

We are taken back to Meade Lake, this time for Ty Hunter’s wedding, which brings the reunion of Jules and Shane, high school best friends, who have been separated for ten years.

Ten tears ago, Shane was the high school swim team champion, Jules and Tommy his best cheerleaders. The three were inseparable. Jules and Shane had a thing going but Jules kept him friend-zoned. Her parents’ marriage failure made her mistrustful of love and she never wanted to ruin this wonderful relation she had with her two besties. Everything came apart one day when Shane suddenly left Meade Lake, went to college in California, and never contacted Jules again.

With all her dreams shattered, Jules stayed in Meade Lake and moved on, with the help of her friends Ryder and Derrick and their wives Milla and Kaylee. Also her cousin Kirby and best friend Luna. Her home life with an alcoholic mother was a nightmare during her high school years but her mother straightened her life and went sober. So life is good for Jules, except that she never forgot Shane.

Ten years after he left, he suddenly returns for his older brother’s wedding. Jules is in charge of the wedding cake. Their reunion is awkward; Shane is regretful and Jules is resentful. Their friends are careful and hesitant, happy to welcome their old friend back home, and mindful of Jules’ feelings.

The main feeling I felt while reading this story was regret. Jules was broken when Shane left her and now that he’s back she feels anger and resentment. Shane seems eager to spend time with Jules and rekindle their relation, but she shies away from spending time with him. Shane has a sadness in his eyes all the time he deals with Jules. I got the feeling he repents his actions and how long he stayed away. Coming home again brings back the feelings he had for this little town and Jules.

Their way to each other is not easy, mostly because Jules feels a lot of uncertainty. She suffered a big loss when he left and doesn’t want to feel another loss again. Shane’s work in California is pulling him away and you can feel he’s torn in two directions. I was angry at Shane, I felt he took a coward’s way out and wanted Jules to lash out at him. But the heart wants what it wants and they were finding a way to each other again. I didn’t agree with some of Jules’ actions and the way she coped with Shane. Also, Shane was very submissive and let Jules lead the way. I felt he needed to be more proactive.

I loved this bittersweet tale of second chance and very much felt the intense love between these two friends. They were lost but eventually found their way. I was also glad to revisit with Derrick and Ryder and their wives. I felt good to see their group, so together and supportive. Now I’m hoping to read Kirby and Luna’s stories soon!

Another wonderful and emotional read from this author.

"I want to take all the time in the world when it comes to you."

Jules Grey has lived the past eleven years without her best friend, Shane Hunter. He'd graduated early and left town without saying goodbye after a tragic accident. Now, he's back for this brother's wedding and looks like he wants to pick up the threads of their old friendship, but she's resistant. She's worked hard to move on without him and having him back in her life, after he cut her out of his, is beyond hard. However, it's difficult to deny the old easiness and multitude of memories - good and bad - between them, as well as the chemistry that was always present when they were teenagers. Unfortunately, he has a job to return to on the other side of the country, so she needs to be very careful with her heart around him.

"My body wants him, but so do I. I want him to hold me, kiss me, talk to me, listen to me cry. I want more."

I'm crazy about this author. She has been one of my best finds of the year. Her writing is simply wonderful - so evocative and emotive. Jules was strong, independent and generally content with her life. She had her fears and insecurities but she knew who she was. She recognised her weakness when it came to Shane, but even though the story was told from her POV, it was also clear that Shane had his own vulnerabilities. He was such a decent, caring guy who was messed up by the loss of their best friend. I loved that, in the present day, he was stoic and let Jules set the pace of their friendship. I loved that he was a hugely popular guy and came from a wealthy family, but as a high school kid, he was still so kind and thoughtful. This was such a fab story that gripped my heart. Loved it!

In Winters Past is a highly emotional, heartfelt romance in the Meade Lake series by Taylor Danae Colbert. Jules and Shane's story goes back and forth between their present-day reunion after a decade, and flashbacks to the evolution of their friendship as high schoolers, leading up to the tragedy with their third friend, Tommy, that ripped them apart.

The story is an emotional rollercoaster. It is so well-written, and tugged on my heartstrings all along the way. The abandonment that Jules felt when Shane left was heartbreaking, especially since he was her one safe place. Those feeling never went away, and her struggle to protect her heart when Shane returned to town is so well-written. As everything unfolds and the whole story is brought to light and revealed to the reader, I sobbed big ugly tears. There is a lot for Shane and Jules to unpack and work through as they first rebuild their friendship and then a romantic relationship. But it was an incredible story with a heartwarming ending after all of the heartache.

On a broader note, I love how close-knit this group of friends is, how they rally around one another and support each other!

So a word of warning....Do Not start this book at 1130pm!!!! I was useless the next day as I just couldn’t put it down .... I was totally captivated by this beautiful story, my heart wrenched at the pain and loss, my chest ached as we got to know the history of this amazing friendship.
The author has cleverly woven the past with the present in such a way that each snippet was enough to keep you totally enthralled and desperate to know how these two would finally get the chance to be together.
Shane and Jules are two very lovely characters with a truly special bond, a closeness that radiates off the pages as you read, I couldn’t help but fall in love with both of them. My breath hitched whilst reading the tragic circumstances that broke their teenage hearts and severed their friendship for eleven years.
Now Shane’s back.... does Jules have the strength to stay angry at him or will the pull of their unique connection be too much for her to resist? why should she deny herself that feeling of belonging and safety that only comes with being with Shane? But will it all be fleeting as he prepares to leave again?
A fantastic friends to lovers story which will stay with you long after you finish reading.

This is an ARC review. All opinions are solely my own.

In Winter's Past by Taylor Danae Colbert is book three of the Meade Lake series. These books need to be read and read in order. This was a quick read that was packed full of content. This quick read takes the reader on a full roller coaster of emotions.

This book reunites Jules and Shane after being separated for several years. Their relationship is explained in flashbacks to explain how they got to where they are today. There's teenage confusion and adult consequences. This book goes through entire relationships quickly without making the reader feel rushed through the process.

At the end of chapter 9, my romantic high school heart skipped a beat. Taylor Denae Colbert captures what every girl in high school wanted to hear from that best guy friend who friend zoned her, "I want you to steal mine [hoodies] instead." I cheered and applauded when I read this line. This is possibly the most swoon worthy line I've read in quite a while.

I cannot wait to explore of Taylor Danae Colbert's writing.

Oh my stars. My heart. This story will hit you so hard with the feels that you will feel everything that these characters do. I have been in love with this series and getting to find out Jules and Shane’s story will gut you and you learn so much more of the moments that also happened in prior books. My heart was in my throat within the past chapters, learning how these two because each other’s everything to nothing. Then when we are in the present ones, how these two interact and so much more trying to overcome their grief and their past to forge a future.
There is a lot of push and pull between these two. It felt like it could have been a second chance romance though these two never had that before but it is also a friends to lovers story because of how much these two were everything to each other without crossing that like. I found the truths hurt but healed them. The answers that Jules had always been seeking from Shane. Then after that ending, I am dying to find out what happens in this magical lakeside down. I have hopes on whose story will be next!

I love my visits to Meade Lake and this latest book was everything I didn't know I needed. Jules, Tommy, and Shane were best friends. Three beautiful individuals who demonstrated just how males and females could be just friends. They were a great support system to each other and the rest of their friends. But when tragedy struck, one of them runs away. In winters past, they lived and loved to the fullest. When a wedding brings the one who got away back to Meade Lake, it takes great willpower and an open mind to listen and finally open their hearts to love. Of the three books in this series, this one shattered me. I felt their pain. Their joy. Their anger. Their love. And at the end of it all, forgiveness for what happened in winters past sealed the pair that was left.

I received an advanced copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.

Shane and Jules became instant best friends. Until one day everything changed, Shane left and Jules was left to recover from her broken heart. Eleven years later Shane finally returns to Meade Lake, but will they be able to move one from the past?

I absolutely loved Shane and Jules. Their friendship, their relationship and them navigating through the pain, grief and love they both share. There is so much chemistry between them and despite everything that has happened it is still there years later. They finally have a second chance together, but can they work through everything and take that chance they both deserve.

I absolutely love the Meade Lake world. The town and the group we have gotten to know with each story.

In Winters Past is a beautiful, emotional second chance romance and a MUST READ!

This is the 3rd book in this amazing series and is Shane and Grey’s story. When tragedy strikes Shane leaves town to follow his dream, leaving a heartbroken Grey behind, and now he is returning to town for his brothers wedding, he has no clue how his friends and Grey are going to react. Grey does her upmost to avoid Shane, but he is equally determined to make amends. When secrets are revealed will this be the end of them, or can they overcome and move on together? This is a beautifully written story which is a heartfelt romance, and has heartbreak, emotions, friendship, and love. I was hooked and captivated throughout this addictive page turner and look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I recommend for all.

I recommend these books a million times over. This entire series is woven together with tales of love, friendship, family, and tragedy.

Meade Lake is beautiful background for a heart-wrenching story. Taylor is an incredible storyteller. Though this was a romance about Jules & Shane... we got Tommy’s story as well.

I am a sucker for a friends to lovers story and this one just tore me to shreds (in... like... a good way). Pain and love spent a lot of time tangled together in this story. I felt those emotions as much as Jules and Shane did.

I’m sad the series is ending with Jules and Shane... but I know these characters will be in my heart for a long time to come. That said... I wouldn’t be mad if Taylor gave us a follow-up novella! 😉

In Winters Past is the third title in the Meade Lake series featuring Shane and Jules. This title is both a heartfelt, and heartbreaking small town romance. Jules and Shane’s story is an emotional and entertaining story of family, love, friendship and grief.

Shane and Jules both grew up in Meade Lake but he left to follow his dreams after a tragedy for eleven years without appearing to ever look back. They both struggled with the grief and pain of their loss, but fate and their friends keep throwing them in each other’s path. Their connection and chemistry between this pair is undeniable and I look forward to future additions to the Meade Lake series.

I have fallen in love with this series more and more with every book! And In Winters Past is the perfect addition to it. The characters in this beautiful lake town constantly take my breath away – like Tommy, who is so full of life, and hope, and joy…he’s just incredible. Cue the tears.
And the way Jules and Shane weave around each other, desperately trying to reconcile the past while navigating the present and their feelings for each other…I couldn’t wait to read on to find out how it ended, but then I didn’t want it to end either!

This is such an adorable friends to lovers romance! I loved the back story and how the author switched back and forth between the past and present. It really added to the story taking place in the present time. I was hooked from the very beginning. The author gave us a little mystery that pulls you in. I fell in love with the characters from the very beginning. They were all so amazing! The ending fell a little short. I would've loved a more lovey ending. It is a HEA, but ended so abruptly. I wish there was more to it. Overall it was an amazing book! 4.5 stars!!

This is book 3 in the Meade Lake series. Jules is a cake decorator in the small town she grew up in. Jules, Tommy and Shane were best friends. There was a horrible incident that changed them forever. Shane comes back to town for his brothers wedding and Jules and Shane are forced to deal with the past. Can they be friends again? Can they be more? This was a emotional read and a great friendship journey. This is a new author to me. I would Definitely read another book by Taylor.

Another emotional read in this series.

This has been a heartfelt, heart hurting emotional series. Jules and Shane were best friends along with Tommy until something happens and three become two and then just one...Jules.

Shane returns to town and it's not going to be so easy for Jules to forgive and forget.

This series tugs at your heart strings and Book #3 is no different.

Well, Taylor Danae Colbert does it again. I didn’t think I would be able to fall more in love with this series—then, in walked Shane and Jules. Their story is so raw, honest and heartbreaking and everything that makes a book amazing. At every turn of the page, I was there with Jules winding down the mountain road of Meade Lake and laughing/crying right along with the Meade Lake crew. I can’t wait to see what this author does next!

Grey and Shane knocked my heart off and crushed it into pieces. These characters captured my attention completely and no matter how I prepared my heart before reading a Taylor Danae Colbert novel I always end up an emotional mess. This is so good. My heart can't contain with every book of Meade Lake Series. As well as the other book of this series ..Shane and Grey stories was heartbreaking and full of emotions. As every chapter of their past unfolds .. my heart aches for them. I can't help but to cry for Tommy. He's one of the characters that I really love. But then Taylor redeemed the whole story by giving us a happy ever after that we needed. And I always love her for that. This a heartfelt story that everyone should read. Highly recommend.

Taylor’s books are always amazing. I’m kind of obsessed with Shane. Jules story broke my heart multiple times. I loved the flashbacks of their friendship in high school & how special it was.

I wish there was more Meade Lake after this!
