Mosul, 2007. Private First Class Jack Bradshaw is on his first deployment with the 75th Ranger Regiment. Their mission: capture a high value member of al-Qaeda in Iraq who has been driving the insurgency in the region.
It will be Bradshaw's baptism by fire, and no-one--especially Bradshaw himself--knows if he will emerge unscathed...

While his main focus as a reader is special operations history, geopolitics, and self-published action thrillers, he simply enjoys a good story. When not reading or writing, he’s hitting the gym or diving into video games.
An action-packed intro to Forsaken Patriots. Author Steven Hildreth, Jr. goes back to explore the early days of Forsaken Patriots protagonist Jack Bradshaw's military career in this short story, delivering all the lethal tactical realism that readers have come to expect from Hildreth's writing, in a compact package.
Outside the Wire is a single op, unconnected from the broader series, with no larger plot beyond the story of soldiers tasked with a raid on a high-value target in Iraq. If it feels random, that's because it's meant to be--Hildreth captures perfectly the feel of Rangers simply following their orders, with no sense of the bigger picture, or even if there is a bigger picture amid the chaos of war.
Great little story, and I look forward to the release of Vermilion Boiling!
This short story is about a platoon in Iraq, written by a veteran who has walked the walk. From one veteran to another, well done Mr Hildreth! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 I will be reading the rest of the series!
This is a short story. One op and get out. Find the high value target that has been supplying insurgents. They got a whole lot more bang for their buck than they expected.
