Ed Weinberger
3 books19 followersEd. Weinberger, who has written for such diverse comedians as Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, and Johnny Carson, began his career in the early ’60s with Dick Gregory. He wrote and produced for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, co-created Taxi, Dear John, and The Cosby Show. He also executive produced and created Amen, Sparks, and Good News. Honors include three Golden Globe Awards, a Peabody, and nine Emmy Awards. In 2000, he received The Writer’s Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the author of the one-man play A Man and His Prostate, which starred Ed Asner and toured nationally for five years. In 2017, he co-authored the book The Grouchy Historian, An Old-Time Lefty Defends Our Constitution Against Right-Wing Hypocrites and Nutjobs.

I enjoyed this book, aptly titled. Not sure I would call it fun; I'm so sick of the whole political mess. Would not call it surprising either, as some of the dialog is straight from the horse's mouth. I'd say there are some scary items in here, and as it is not yet January 20 (45 more days), I'm beginning to hold my breath again. We will survive as a democracy, though things will never be quite the same.

Gotcha! Inside Trump’s 2020 Campaign is billed as satirical fiction and parody. Unfortunately, not much seemed like fiction. Most of the stories are pulled straight from the headlines, and what isn’t feels like it just hasn’t happened yet.
Let Ed Weinberger pull back the curtain to give you a glimpse of what could very well be conversations taking place behind the scenes. I read this book on the night of the last presidential debate before the election. The book is chillingly accurate up to this point in time.
Many conversations will leave you chuckling over the foibles of politicians and media personalities. I suspect your political leanings may influence how much you enjoy the book. But, I believe many readers, American and foreign, will get a kick out of this story.
The author shows why he is so successful in writing for television and comedians. He reaches right into the heart of a scene and pulls out the gems to make you see the lighter side and chuckle over the absurdities of politics.

This is the antidote to the Trump plague that has gripped the land for 5 years really. You see Trump for what he is - a simple, sad, silly man - and you have a grand laugh at his expense. It’s called a satire, a parody - no doubt to avoid lawsuits - but every word has a ring of truth. Many juicy bits about Trump, Melania, Iranian and Jared. No innocents were harmed in this book. But you see for yourself the empower has no clothes, or shoes, or hair, or honor, or dignity. Trump is no longer scary to me. It’s like once you get out of bed, throw open the closet door in the night, and see no one is there it is comical and you experience great relief. That’s exactly how this book made me feel. I see the comedy and I feel the relief. Enjoy Gotcha! I did.

This is the most offense book I have read –EVER!!!!. How any author can totally defy the ONLY President who ever started fulfilling his promises on the first day of his job is truly a horrible, ugly person. There was NOTHING funny in this book and it was all an insult to our current President. It only got a l start because you can’t give a 0!!!

This book went in depth on the behind the scenes focus on President Trumps Campaign. Ed Weinberger even went in on the personal lives of the family including Trump himself. I do have to say I have to be impartial but there were parts of this book that were tough to read and tough to accept and comprehend. But I know that there are members of our community that do have strong political views and will consider to read this book.

Sorry but I gave up on this book. Very choppy and certainly not funny. Perhaps it’s just me but this book isn’t for me.

Since Trump's election, I've read many serious books analysing how America got to what I, along with many others, consider a crisis of democracy, so it was refreshing to read a parody about it. This facetious satire of one of the world's best-known men delivers a funny parody making light of our current president's most conspicuous traits as well as his most momentous and noteworthy gaffes.
The book takes you through all the familiar events of the last year to recent election and the result. The staffing changes are there, as are darker things, like Putin, North Korea, and Charlottesville, though they're not the main thing. I suppose the author wanted to leave the serious stuff to serious analysts; they concentrate on parodying Trump's arrogance, incompetence, and growing instability. How It All Ends, which is the question on many of our minds, make me laugh out loud, when author predicted that Trump would refuse to leave the White House after losing the election.
Ed. Weinberger has now given us an outrageously funny novel equal to the absurdity roiling Washington. The explosion of topical gags in “GOTCHA! Inside Trump’s 2020 Campaign” will — one hopes — someday require a host of footnotes to explain, but let the future worry about that. In this book author blended reality and fiction seamlessly, and given all that's happened since Trump took office, the whole convoluted plot seems so damned plausible!
In 'GOTCHA!: Inside Trump’s 2020 Campaign', Ed. Weinberger uses a strong story that has some degree of possibility to weave quite the tale and keeps the reader on their toes as they try not to tear up with laughter as it relates to the countless moments of mockery that emerge throughout. With strong chapters that keep the story moving and a cast of characters, many of whom depict real personas in the Washington sphere, Weinberger entertains like few others can. One can only wonder what 'The election 2020' will bring, but whatever it is, the history books will surely be full of footnotes about the craziness these past four years have been.
Worth a read no matter which side of the political fence you stand on because let's face it, we all make mistakes and laughing at someone else's faults makes our own imperfections a little less glaring and a lot more tolerable. This great piece leaves no stone unturned and keeps the reader snickering throughout, permitted they have an open mind and do not mind a little political ribbing. Recommended to those who can handle a little mockery of the American political situation, as well as the reader who needs a little humour to lighten their post-election cycle mood.

GOTCHA! follows the life and family of Donald Trump during the 2020 election. It vividly both imagines and reports on the coronavirus and how it has impacted America, along with predicting the future of January 2021, and his unwelcome stay at the White House.
I enjoyed how the novel incorporated both real-life events and educated guesses on how the presidential election would occur, and did not state any explicit biases towards both sides. Of course, even though this book is a satirical play on the Republican presidency, I did notice that it felt like just that. A satire. There were no over-the-top statements or parts of the story that threw the reader off, or created a prejudice against or with the author's point of view. I also appreciate how the author did enough research to create an image that included the world of FOX News and the other countries' leaders.
The book did a good job with the amount of quotes and politics that it included.
One thing that I would add, is that the story seemed to be kind of bland. I get that with the COVID-19 virus spreading around, (and my - possible - reading mood interference) it would be kind of hard to make other elements of a story seem important. And, I also do get that this may have been the author's point. Overall, I enjoyed the book for what it is, and I hope to make future correlations between the book and reality as time goes on!

I found myself reading sections of "GOTCHA!" and having to google to see whether an event included in the book actually happened. The book's publication date must have been fairly recently, as the book includes Trump's Covid-19 diagnosis on October 2nd.
In its best chapters, this book nails it. I found the chapters "Trump's Photo Op at the NRA" and "The Second October Surprise" to be spot on, excellent satire that made me laugh and shake my head at the same time. In other chapters, the book struggles to make its statement, again, likely because the current political climate in the United States is so topsy-turvy that satire has a tough time finding a mark. It's a quick read and has enough laughs in it to keep a reader occupied.
Sadly, the book's closing prediction may turn out to be all too prescient. I won't give it away, but I can see Trump acting as written in the closing chapters.

Are you looking for something quick to read that you can chuckle at? This would be a fun read, no matter where you are politically because honestly, the last few years has been bananas. It's like SNL writers are in charge of the daily news, and this book reflects that. It's an insider view of the last campaign cycle and what happened next. It says 286 pages but the pages are larger print (larger than normal size, I guess) and the margins are wide so there isn't much on each page, you can easily get through this book in a day. It's not uproariously funny book but I did smile and chuckle throughout and it was definitely entertaining.

Ok, so I understood what I was getting going into this book. Anti-Trump poison, 'satire', Trump Derangement Syndrome, ridicule, insult and disrespect.
I wanted the book anyway, though, because of the cover ----- I like Trump memorabilia ------
I read the book. It was not nearly as funny as it promised to be. Really not funny. So much Ill - will towards President Trump.
I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway, and I thank the author and publisher.....

Uproarious. Visionary. Astute. Pinpoint portrayals of Trump, his family and relatives, staff, government accomplices, and familiar sycophants. A must-read. The imaginary yet oh-so-realistic scenarios -- dating from this past March to the election and beyond to January 2021 -- present a laugh-out-loud escape from each challenging day of this “presidency”. Highly recommended!

The blurb for the book states that this is a work of fiction/satire. The legal statement about characters reinforces that by saying that said characters do not resemble anyone living or dead. Balderdash, hogwash, and utter nonsense. Okay, okay...I know that this is an entertaining, witty, spot-on take on an administration which should be, at the very least, caricatured in such a manner. (Editor's note - the author of this review despises the current squatter in the White House, his criminal enterprise, and their enablers.) While reading Gotcha, I felt as if I was reading the actual notes of meetings or transcripts of phone calls that now reside in the Trump Presidential Library. (Editor's note - that was satire of a hyperbolic nature.) In other words they sound just so damn real, that I found myself emitting negative comments and many naughty words as I was reading, adding to my limitless loathing. Personal feelings aside, I was really laughing my arse off. Kudos to the author for a page turning way to survive the dual pandemics we are experiencing..Covid-19 & #45. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

3.5 stars for this one from me. Writing satire for the Trump presidency is an unenviable task. I found myself reading sections of "GOTCHA!" and having to google to see whether an event included in the book actually happened. The book's publication date must have been fairly recently, as the book includes Trump's Covid-19 diagnosis on October 2nd.
In its best chapters, this book nails it. I found the chapters "Trump's Photo Op at the NRA" and "The Second October Surprise" to be spot on, excellent satire that made me laugh and shake my head at the same time. In other chapters, the book struggles to make its statement, again, likely because the current political climate in the United States is so topsy-turvy that satire has a tough time finding a mark. It's a quick read and has enough laughs in it to keep a reader occupied.
Sadly, the book's closing prediction may turn out to be all too prescient. I won't give it away, but I can see Trump acting as written in the closing chapters.

This is a political satire book. Some satire mixed with some facts. If you enjoy political satire or president bashing you will love this book. Written by the same writer who wrote for Bob Hope, the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and The Cosby Show just to name a few.

This hilarious fictional take on the reelection campaign of Donald Trump was a fast read! With all of the negativity surrounding politics right now, it was nice to just laugh about it with this fictional story.
