I am a big fan of Erin Johnsons other series, and was hoping this book would be as good.
It really was!
The characters are great, I really hope we haven't seen the last of rudie and her sisters , and archer too.
It was a lovely story, and great for getting into the Christmas spirit.

Murder rocks Holiday Haven! With Christmas just around the corner, will the most Chrismassey place on earth be clouded in gloom? Not if Rudie can help it.
Rudie is special. She can see and talk to ghosts. As one of the owners of the only funeral home in Holiday Haven, it's a useful gift as well. When Phillipa is murdered she appears to Rudie and tasks her with finding her killer ... or be haunted for the rest of her life.
I know I said this about the last one BUT what a magical and fun Christmas cozy! This series is just too much fun and I'm sad it's over.

I really enjoyed Cocoa Curses and would definitely read other books from this series in the future! It's a light and charming Christmas-themed read that doesn't hit you over the head with Christmas which I greatly appreciated.
The protagonist Rudie has an interesting profession, as she runs the town's only funeral home with her sisters. She uses the connections she's made through work and her ability to communicate with ghosts in a smart way to help her solve the mystery.
The mystery itself flows very nicely. It was easy to follow along with Rudie's train of thought about the case, though the mystery itself was not simplistic either, with many possible suspects and angles to consider.
The mystery is not the sole focus of the book, as the reader learns more about Rudie's life and her insecurities about feeling excluded from the town due to her job and gift. This was an interesting sideplot that was well-integrated into the overall book. Not that it's the end of the world, but I did find it to be a bit cliché at points, in case that's anything that people really want to avoid.
I'm not sure if they were discussed in previous books as this series is a multi-author endeavour and this is the first book in the series that I read, but I would have loved to have to known more about some of the background characters and suspects. I guess I'll have to read more of this series to find out!

Book 5 We are back in Holiday Haven with different characters. Another Author is in this 5 Erin Johnson. This is about Their a witch that can talk to ghosts. Her 2 sisters Fix and Donna and her own a funeral home that was their parents. Since Their talked to ghosts she felt like she and her sisters were black sheep in this Cheery place where there is Christmas everyday. But as her nemesis Hannah say this Holiday Haven is not for gloomy , depressed as in death. So Rudie has low self esteem. She would loved to go out with Archie but she was shy. Rudie was in a event Santa's Little Helpers to raise funds for different causes. This year they were making sugar cookies for one of Rudie favorite place. The North Star Reindeer Sanctuary. Her nemesis Hannah was leading the pact and she made Rudie do clean up job. When the 2 cochairmen women Connie and Phillipa were arguing like usual. Everyone in the Chalet John Nicolas and Dr Das witnesses it. Phillipa got poisoned. So when Rudie was doing her funeral Phillipa the ghost said you better find my killer or I will keep at you all your life. Well Rudie found some things that Phillipa did that she could believe. This is the first book 5 that had an actual murder in story. It was a good one too though

My Heart Grew 3 Sizes
I'm not a Christmas person, but I am a paranormal cozy mystery kind of gal. That being said, I love everything Ms. Johnson writes and figured that if anyone could write a Christmas story I'd want to read... it would be her. I loooooooooved it!!! It was a great adult twist on the classic Rudolph story. This Grinch wants more Holiday Haven! Luckily this is a shared world with four more books by for more authors. Now, the only problem I'm having is deciding which one to read next.

The right book at the right time: a charming Christmas mystery that ended up being surprisingly moving. I also thought this was book one of the series when I picked it up but I don't think it matters; the five books seem to be interrelated stories in the same town with different protagonists and not overly sequential.

Rudie Hollybrook lives in the town of Holiday Haven, near Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole. Holiday Haven is a happy and cheery town, leaving Rudie a bit misplaced. She’s always seen herself as an outsider since she can see ghosts and operates a funeral parlor with her sisters, Vix and Donna.
Despite feeling like an outsider and dealing with a bully, Rudie makes sure to include herself as part of the community by volunteering at the Christmas Market. During the festivities, one of the chairwomen of the committee, Phillippa, falls down dead. Of course, the departed woman’s ghost appears to Rudie, stating she was murdered and insisting Rudie solve her murder. Not wanting to be haunted by an irate ghost, Rudie puts on her sleuthing cap and does her best to ferret out a killer.
Rudie is a fun, caring, and interesting character. She’s not perfect but continues to try and embrace who she is and her abilities. She reminds of myself – non-confrontational and puts up with a lot of garbage from others. Her low self-esteem prevents her from standing up for herself. I love the relationship Rudie has with her sisters Donna and Vix. When Archer enters the scene, Rudie lights up and I enjoyed her interactions with him. How he treats Rudie really impressed me.

Wow, I loved this book, one of a series of 5 by different authors set in the cosy little town of Holiday Haven, I can see the potential for developing a series just with these characters.
Rudie is the director of the only funeral parlour in town, and her specialty is seeing ghosts, normally the friendly type who just want to pass on a final message to their loved ones. When a local do-gooder is murdered at a Christmas festival in front of the whole town, the angry ghost demands that Rudie identifies the killer. Rudie teams up with local newspaper editor and long term crush Archer, suspects abound, was it the disgruntled granddaughter, the dashing doctor, the grieving father or the local mean girl etc.
Supplementary characters as usual in Erin's books are great, Rudie's 2 sisters especially, and of course there has to be an animal around - in this case the cute and sweet snow fox familiar.
The book focuses on the mystery and the magic, the romance is sweet but doesn't develop in leaps and bounds - another reason why more about these characters would be great. It isn't a long book, I recommend you sit down with a hot cup of cocoa and some cookies to set the mood and enjoy!

I was hesitant yet excited to check out this new world of Christmas. It's not a holiday I celebrate, and I usually steer clear of holiday themed reads for it. BUT this book was fantastic!
I loved how Erin wove the magic of Christmas spirit into the town without making it majorly cheesy. If I were to imagine a town derived from Christmas it would be this world. From character names to the small attention to every detail it was a magical read.
With funeral home antics, personal growth and budding romance this book is going to be a must read to get you in the holiday spirit! I love how well Erin builds a mystery, always leaves me guessing, and turns out to be a oh that makes so much sense moment at the end.
If you love paranormal cozy mysteries, with witches, magic and small town drama you will love this book. (Note: LGBT characters, fist pump!)

This is a fun book that's part of a collection by different authors. I started with this one and really enjoyed it. Rudie is a witch who can see ghosts, something that is unique to her and makes her feel like something of an outcast. She runs the local funeral home with her sisters. The story gets going when a local woman is killed by poisoned cocoa and the ghost demands Rudie solve her murder. Rudie enlists the aid of Archer Olson who works at the local paper, he's also her longtime crush.
Will Rudie be able to find out who killed the victim? Will she become a victim herself? Will her love interest pan out? Find out by reading this book!

A great cozy mystery
Rudie, funeral home director and witch able to see and speak to ghosts, loves the small town outside of the North Pole she lives in with her two sisters and white fox familiar. As the story progresses there is murder afoot, mysteries abound, and she may not survive if she can’t solve it in time. Erin Johnson’s contribution to the Winter Witches of Holiday Haven is a great cozy mystery with plenty of Christmas themed characters and settings.
I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Cocoa Curses by Erin Johnson is another cute cozy paranormal mystery set in the North Pole suburb of Holiday Haven. Rudie is a sweet witch with a particular talent of being able to talk to ghosts. When a member of a volunteer group that Rudie belongs to is poisoned at the Christmas Market, she must find the culprit before Christmas. A satisfying mystery with likable characters.

I enjoyed this final book in this interesting series. The story had good characters and included a part of the Christmas community that is often overlooked. The plot was good and I enjoyed the story.

I just loved this book! Set in a shared world with books by other authors this one stands on its own. We meet Rudie who runs a funeral homes with her sisters. This makes her feel like an outsider in town but she loves it their anyways. One talent that is only hers is the ability to see and talk with ghosts. This comes in handy when a death happens and the ghost wants her to find her killer. With some help from her crush, a reporter, she proceeds to do just that. Makes for a fantastic cozy mystery that will put you in the holiday spirit. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Rudie has always felt like an outsider in a town priding itself on Christmas/ holiday cheer. Not only is she a funeral director at the family funeral home but her power is to see ghosts which isn't so cheerful. When the co-chair of her volunteer group dies from poison in front of her, it was distressing but more so when the cranky lady insists on haunting her until she finds out the murderer. Rudie finds some benefits to the investigation.
The stories in this series are fairly light, quick and easy despite the sinister act that always happens. I kind of love the Holiday Haven setting with all the quirky holiday details and getting a glimpse of those who feel a bit outside of the community. The juxtaposition between reindeer, candy canes, magic and mystery are fun enough to continue.

We follow Rudie Hollybrook as she is trying to solve a mystery and trying to keep Hayley, her nemesis, from hating her even more. Rudie is our point-of-view character, and I loved her from the beginning. She is such a great person to follow and to see her be with her crush. Holiday Haven is such a cute town, and most of the people that Rudie runs into while working at the town are pretty cool. The only person who isn't is Hayley, and the whole reason why she doesn't like Rudie is petty. As a person, Rudie is definitely a people pleaser and wants to try her best at fitting into the town but doesn't think that anyone there likes her. Her growth in the novel is fantastic, and I liked every minute of it.

A big task to do without any hints from the deceased on where to start. Okay, let alone with what she wanted Rudie to tell her only granddaughter Noelle the next day. So, Rudie sets off to figure it out. I loved how she goes about interviewing some people, especially with her crush, who happens to be a newspaper reporter. I thought I knew who did it, but I didn't get the why until later on.

One of the many things that I like about Ms. Johnson's books is that the characters always have such funny sayings. Like in this one, there were many "Dear Santa" and some others that I'm forgetting about, but they are super cute. I am giving it five stars and recommending it to anyone that loves reading holiday paranormal cozy mysteries.

Rudie Hollybrook's story is in three parts in the Winter Witches of Holiday Haven Multi-author series. I purchased them as a boxset and I am reviewing them individually.
Rudie and her sisters run the Hollybrook Funeral Home, having taken over when their parents died. Rudie is very active in the community, working with Santa's Little Helpers a volunteer group working to raise money for local charities. It's at one of those venues that this story opens.
They have a Christmas Cookie Chalet at the Christmas Market and today, Rudie along with Dr. Dash, Nikolas Sage, John Merriman, and Hayley who had managed to put herself in charge were working that first day. Hayley is Rudie's nemesis and assigned her to trash duty, so she was running back and forth to the bins across the way next to the tower. She spent little time in the Chalet, so she wasn't there when the Chair and Co-chair of the organization arrived. Connie Blitzen and Phillipa Lightstep while always arguing over something, were both devoted to making every event a success.
Phillipa had taken a drink of her cocoa and suddenly collapsed, and no number of spells from Dr. Dash could revive her. I should mention here that Rudie can see and communicate with ghosts. Phillipa's appears to her and demands she find her killer, or she'll haunt her until she does.
Now on top of everything she normally does, Rudie has to figure out how to find a killer. One of the first things she needs is a suspect list the next is someone to help her sort everything out.
The first people she puts on her list are Phillipa's granddaughter Noelle and her boyfriend Xander. She found the whole of the consultation for the funeral to be a bit off. Of course, she'd have to add everyone at the Cookie Chalet when Phillipa died as well.
Archer Olsen is the owner and editor of the local paper, Hark the Herald. Rudie frequently visits him with obituaries to be printed, and she even flirts a little. He serves her favorite coffee in a Santa mug while they do business. I think he likes her too.
From the funeral to the investigating, this is a page turner. Each little hint leads to more questions until the answer is found.
In spite of the murder, this is a fun read with just a touch of romance.
I'm already reading the next book.

Heartwarming and cozy

* All of the reindeer names are characters within this book. For example, Rudie is for Rudolph, Vix is for Vixen, Dr. Dash is for Dasher, etc.
* The setting is cozy and comforting. That's a feat given that it's a funeral home.
* The blossoming romance is incredibly sweet.
* Loved the main character. Every character was very well fleshed out, but Rudie (the main character) is incredibly sweet.
* The mystery was interesting and kept me guessing until the end.
* The ending was incredibly heartwarming! All of the feels!

🌟 Overall, I loved this cozy mystery. It has an unique setting and the characters are interesting.
The part that stood out for me is when Rudie and her sister have to go out in the middle of the night for a death call. I called the funeral home at 4 am when my dad passed away. The main thing that I didn't think about before is that there are workers who have to get fully dressed up in the middle of the night so comfort the family and retrieve the body. Like at the time, I wasn't thinking at all but now I think back on it, it's pretty amazing that people get dressed in suits at 4 am just to comfort me and my family. She then went on to explain how much of a honor it is to handle the deceased loved one. The author is right, it is a big honor that's full of trust.
There are scenes dealing with a funeral parlor here and there, but it's done in a very tasteful and cozy way. That's a feat since it's such an unusual setting.
The ending left me a little bit teary eyed, but only because it's so heartwarming and sweet.
Definitely recommend this book and I look forward to the next story for these characters. This one is going to be one of my top books of 2024.

(Winter witches of Holiday Haven)
I think Erin Johnson is an underrated author. She writes cozy fantasy, cozy mysteries with small town vibes. This is my second series written by her. Before this, I had read an entire 10 book series back to back (Spells and caramels) So, I can tell her books are well-written.
The world building is done in such a way that there is enough information for the reader to imagine the vibes, the atmosphere and the town as if we are looking through our protagonist's eyes and experiencing it right beside her....but, at the same time it's only a few paragraphs which is why we don't get bored or there isn't too much info dumped. In fact, the world she usually creates is so fascinating that it makes me want to be there. This was the same as well.
Coming to the mystery - I loved that I wasn't sure who the culprit was until 70 percent in the book which was when our protagonists solved their mystery as well. Even then, I didn't know how they had committed the crime. So, I wanted to read more...which just says how good this story was. There was also a sweet romance subplot in this that I enjoyed reading. I love it when the couple are like partners-in-crime or teaming up to solve cases like in this. We also got to see some heartwarming family moments and I love when authors write about career oriented women. It's just that they're usually very few and not that well written. But, I loved Rudie and her family.
Erin Johnson also writes clean romances. So, if you are looking for something like that or otherwise, do give this book a try.

This author was the reason I started reading the books in the Holiday Haven series. I enjoyed the other book in the series but have to admit this was my favourite so far. Each book is written by one of five talented female authors, each book is about a different sets of characters and very different mysteries, this book and book one the only ones to have a murder to solve, with the location the only constant and sometimes a live interest. I have liked the characters but somehow this author has you actually caring about the characters also. The mystery was good. A bit obvious who the killer was right from the start and with no real twists but it's just a fun winter read that is unusual from the rest of the cozies out there, especially her job. The reindeer names used as characters was also fun and added to the feeling of Christmas.

It also doesn't help that her witchy powers let's her see and talk to ghost. To help her image and to wear some bright colours for a change, she volunteers at the annual cookie selling fund raiser where a tragedy strikes. A fellow volunteer drops dead and her ghost asks Rudie to find her killer. Rudie is in the perfect position to ask her grieving family and co-worker questions to get to the bottom of the death. With the help and skills from the newspaper owner can they find the killer?

Well Happy Christmas to you too! Erin Johnson’s Christmas novella is the perfect festive whodunnit to put you right in the mood for some holiday cheer and a sweet cup of hot cocoa… uhh… minus the poison of course!
The mystery to solve is who killed well-known town figure, Phillipa Lightstep. Her ghostly presence demands Rudie get to work immediately to solve her murder! Poor Rudie decides to acquiesce to avoid a Christmas haunted by the fastidious phantom. Although Phillipa was very active in charity works and renowned for being a rule stickler, investigations soon prove that the lady was up to some no good dealings. Which of those dealings got her killed though? Mixed motives lead us to uncover varied suspects, some with more opportunity than others. It doesn’t take too long to figure out the most likely culprit, and once more pieces come to light, the motive is also clear. The big reveal is cute and gives Rudie a chance to confront some of her own self-doubts.
The Christmas factor in this town, located right next to North Pole, is unsurprisingly spectacularly high and utterly charming. You’ll want to visit Winter Haven to experience the town’s charm for yourself. Food, drinks, decor, parties, charming stores and cute pets all combine for the perfect setting.
To top it all off, Rudie is a cute protagonist with just the right combination of drive, flaws and sweetness.

I loved Erin Johnson's Spell & Caramels series and her Magic Market series. So, I was excited to have the opportunity to read Cocoa Curses, Book 5 in the Christmas themed Winter Witches of Holiday Haven series. Each book is written by a different cozy paranormal mystery author. All of the stories revolve around the residents of the town of Holiday Haven which is close to the North Pole. Rudie Hollybrook and her sisters run the Hollybrook Funeral Home. The Christmas Market is in full swing and Rudie is volunteering with the Santa's Little Helpers booth. She'd like to be making and baking the cookies, but she got trash and cleaning duty. Then there's a scream and a murder at the booth! Rudie has to organize the funeral and that night the angry ghost of the departed appears. She demands that Rudie solve her murder or she will haunt her for the rest of her life. Rudie has no idea how to solve a crime but shares what happened with Archer, the newspaper editor and her secret crush. He says he'll help her. There are lots of suspects to check out and possible danger to them both. I really enjoyed this book. I think a full series could be based on just these characters and their cute, quaint little town.

I love Erin Johnson! She can write funny, cozy stories that makes you feel good every.single.time. She’s the queen of puns and I have been in love with her work since the very beginning.
Cocoa Curses is perfect for a good snowy day when it’s too cold outside and you want to snuggle up with a good book. It’s funny, full of Christmas vibes (or rather Witchmas vibes) and as always, a good, short story well written.
This book takes us to Holiday Haven, a cute little town near the North Pole where everything should be merry and jolly. The thing is, it’s not… at least, not all the time. Rudie loves her town and would love to fit right in, but she’s a witch, she sees ghost and she’s the co-owner of a funeral home. When a coworker for a charity she’s volunteering for is murdered, Rudie will find herself diving into an investigation regarding a lot of secrets kept well hidden in this tiny town.
The plot is easy, the story, sadly, way too short! I want more! The characters are interesting and Rudie and her sisters are a family that would be very fun to know more about. I was entertained and had a blast reading it. Cocoa Curses is book number 5 of the Winter Witches of Holiday series written by different authors.

This is the last one in a series, Winter Witches of Holiday Haven, of five by different authors sharing the same physical area of the North Pole. The North Pole is like a large region, kind of like NY City with its burroughs. It is unusual for crime to happen in this area and there seems to be an abundance of spiritual/paranormal individuals in the North pole.
Rudie Hollybrook is a witch that sees ghosts. She feels out of place since she doesn’t know anyone else that can see & hear ghosts. This trait helps her in her day-to-day business as the director of the funeral parlor. She usually uses her talent to pass on messages from the newly departed to their loved ones.
At the Christmas market, Rudie sees a woman, Phillippa, die from drinking cocoa. Phillippa’s ghost demands that Rudie find her killer. With the help of her familiar, a snow fox and a reporter, Archer, that she has a crush on, she tries to find the killer.
Erin Johnson never disappoints. I love her characters, her imagination, and her ability to tell a story.
Having read two of the five has enticed me to read the other three.

As always, I love this book by this author. It's set in the wonderful village of Winter Haven. Rudie, along with her two sisters, Vixen and Donna, own the only funeral home in town. This makes her feel she's an outsider in a place where everyone else has an upbeat job. To make matters worse, she can see ghosts. Rudie is a volunteer at her club's Christmas Market when she sees a woman die. Later, her ghost comes and tells Rudie she will haunt her for eternity if she doesn't find out who murdered her. Along with a handsome report, Archer, who works at the "Hark the Herald" newspaper, she starts investigating even though she's never done it before. There are lots of twists in this mystery and I figured out who did it just as Rudie did. And, like her namesake, she learns that she has a unique gift and people do love her. Its a fun book to read with the added puzzle of figuring out the names of all of the reindeer the characters are named after. Some are obvious and others not so much. I am excited to read the other books in this series.
