Bailey's book achieves it's stated purpose. On the first page he writes,
"Hundreds of books have been published on how to become a better leader, and new ones can be added to our shelves nearly every month. In fact, I've written a couple of them myself. Most of these books primarily offer techniques and methodologies to help you expand your leadership skills, and many of them can be quite helpful. But I think most books on leadership miss this truth: you'll become a better leader as you become a better person. The best leaders, I suggest, aren't those who have learned the most tricks and techniques of leadership, or are skilled in 'taking charge,' or have memorized a bunch of leadership principles. The best leaders have a high level of spiritual maturity they've learned to walk with God in intimacy and let that relationship spill into their leadership."
I enjoy leadership books that focus on the 'how to' of leadership. The danger is that sometimes just knowing how to lead can give a false sense of success and security. I think many leaders fall into this trap.
Bailey focuses not on how to in this book, but on who we should be as leaders.
My only criticism would be his use of different Bible versions. Some were virtually unrecognizable and that was a problem for me.
However, it is a good book and I think would be helpful.
