Thirteen stories lurk within this book, each more twisted than the last. From ancient graveyards to silent assassins, forgotten holidays and mysterious tumors - these disturbing tales will feast on your unsuspecting brain. But if you can brave the darkness within, perhaps you will emerge unscathed...
What a superb cover! Quickly I turned the page on my e-reader and started with the first of overall 15 stories in this anthology. Most of the stories evolve from everyday situations and turn into some nightmarish scenes. Monsters in the Flesh, Parlor Tricks, Mother, Maiden and Crone, Silent Night, Unholy Night... you'll get easily through this collection but somehow I had expected more. More twists, more horror, more gripping moments... I don't know, the writing was a bit too modern for me. It was okay but nothing to stay awake all night.
Overall, not a bad read. I appreciated the different subject matters throughout and the art before each story was a nice touch. But some stories felt like they didn't belong, and I can partly see why now after having read the whole thing... Still don't like the ending and would have preferred if the last story wasn't there.
I think this author isn't for me with the writing style, which is too bad since there are some interesting ideas here!
Monsters in the Flesh, 3.5 stars Truly fascinating. Set quite the picture. I can see why it ended where it did but I am curious about what would happen next.
A Grave Mistake, 3 stars Fun! I would have liked to know more. But, at the same time, I do think this was a perfect ending and great way to go about things. Mostly I want to know why. To a lot of questions...
Parlor Tricks, 1 star Meh. Nothing really worked for me on this one. It was written differently and I was not a fan. Also needed more editing. The others too but especially this one.
The Currency of Life, 2 stars Too much explanation. Not much going on. Should have made me sad. TW:
Maiden, Mother and Crone, 2.5 stars Liked the ending, even if it did seem a but abrupt.
The Exoplanet, 1.5 stars Very interesting concept but I didn't like the execution.
Beyond Salvation, 1 star 1.5 Again, very interesting especially with the disorder. But something was lacking and I didn't like the ending...
Silent Night, Unholy Night, 1 star Felt entirely out of place. I just really don't have anything to say about it.
Soul Cleaver, 3 stars lower end Feel like this woulda been better if it was longer, able to be fleshed out a bit more. Wouldn't have to be much. Has a pretty solid base. I was worried for a min about how it was going but it pulled through.
Blinded By the Light, 2 stars Didn't work for me. Somewhat interesting though.
The Ghost Plane, 2 stars Couldn't keep my interest... Think it's just the writing style.
Chrysalis, 3 stars Middle ground here. I do like how it was open-ended up still obvious.
Heart of Ice, 2 stars Flipping of switches happening here.
The Eccentric Gourmand, 2 stars Yelp, that sucks... Okay read overall. Not much to it.
The End, 1 star Huge pet peeve of mine. More so how it was even the whole book.
The Library of Nightmares is a collection of fourteen (though the description states thirteen) flash fiction horror tales. I was excited to see this short collection offered through Kindle Unlimited because I love flash fiction, and I love tales of horror and things that go bump in the night. My excitement faded after I read the first offering.
Scrivener’s collection starts with a quaint tale of body horror titled Monsters in the Flesh. Now, I say quaint because the story itself was predictable, reminded me of many television episodes, and was neither good nor bad. The second story, A Grave Mistake, possessed more potential and presented a fun graveyard tale. But again, it was predictable and reminiscent of so many other graveyard-inspired tales.
The remaining journey through Scrivener’s tales was the same “safe” journey, with none of the stories standing out from the rest. Scrivener’s writing style is a tad too distant, but that is to be expected with flash fiction. However, the grammatical errors, stylistic choices, and formatting left something to be desired. Another trip through the editing and proofreading process was needed.
Overall, The Library of Nightmares provided a safe journey through the wading pool of horror flash fiction. I am sure many will enjoy this collection, but for me, Scrivener played it too safe with many of the tales and didn’t make the theme their own. I would pick up another book by them and give them another chance because there is something in their voice, but it’s muffled in this collection.
Evening everyone Don P here with a review of Library of Nightmares an anthology written by Ray Scrivener. Here we have 15 stories wrapped up in a fitting book cover all filled with nightmarish tales of betrayal, loss, unnatural greed and hopelessness. From monsters to serial killers, no one is safe from Ray's pen with clear and ominous descriptions of terror. One of my favorite stories is the exoplanet where the story takes you far into the depths of space and deep into the pit of humanity.
To anyone who wishes to read this book, strap in because you're in for thrilling tales and as the title says, Nightmares.
wonderful torment lie waiting for the readers of these stories
Thank you Mr. Ray Scrivener for this collection of some truly scary stories. I know everyone wants to know which is the best, but what tickles my fear meter may mean nothing to you and vice versa, so I can’t say. From my perspective some that I read at night, I do wish I had not and others were just as frightful during the day. But there were no stories I could put down once I had started them. Thank you again for the nightmares and the constant need to be looking over my shoulder during the daylight hours.
I love the horror genre and anthologies are by far my favorite. This collection was really enjoyable. Some of the stories were quite creepy and I liked how the last story summed up the whole thing. Highly recommend!
I love the way you leave tthings it makes the tales so O interesting. I will be wa itching for more. Tell you what you keep writing them and ill keep reading them sincerely Christine Dunne Harlingen Texas
Absolutely loved this collection. The stories are well written and have the ability to keep you enthralled from the first page to the last page. Definitely will read more from this author.
Th ese stories were good and I liked them. I am an author as well and I hope to write some cool creepy ones myself. The ending was also nice. Would read more of his work.
Rather disappointing read. Mostly the run of the mill horror, monsters and bizarre ghosts and things that go bump in the night. Somewhat entertaining however nothing exciting or different.
