On the evening 19th August 2013, a minor girl arrived at Kamla Market Police station Delhi to file a complaint of rape, Delhi police immediately came into action. A few hours later, an FIR was registered and at 1:45 am the girl was taken to LNJP hospital under police cover for the medical examination which confirmed sexual assault.
As the crime had happened in Jodhpur, next day early morning Delhi DCP called Ajay Lamba, who was DCP of Jodhpur and informed him about the FIR. Delhi police escorted the girl and the parents to Jodhpur on 21-August and handed over the FIR and other documents to DCP Ajay Lamba.
All this work was done by Delhi police in less than 48 hours and it all happened when the accused was one of the most powerful religious Guru in India – Asaram Bapu.
Most of the times we criticize our police forces across the country, but these are the incidents which make you respect the Police.

You can read this just to know the hard work done by our police. After reading this my respect for our police force went up, officers like Ajay Lamba and his team make the country proud. They ensure that justice is delivered.

Along with sympathy for the victim, admiration for her bravery and courage and hope in Indian Law enforcement system following are my (subtle) takeaways from this book:
1. Never ever indulge in Person worshipping. It not only damages your logical ability and putting rationale to things but affects people around you. Case in point here is Victim being too afraid to tell her parents about the rape fearing that her parents wouldn't believe that their "Respected Godman" can commit such crime which could have affected the case adversely and denied her justice that she deserved.
2. Justice still depends on how police works for you. With so many nuances around law, it becomes pivotal that Police not only investigates the case thoroughly but does a good job in filing paperwork like chargesheet, evidence, et al. We have many incidences where investigation proved the charges but paperwork submitted to court was so pathetic that Court couldn't act on it.
3. Laws are complex. Do not expect to get justice just because you are on the right side of things.
4. Stay away from Cults and Fanatics (or even from people who stand for it)

Wow! An underdog IPS officer and his team taking on the mighty Godman down with just an honest investigation..unreal to believe. But need so many of such brave duty bound ppl to get the rogue and mighty down to truth and justice.. sounds filmy, but this real life incident makes us all believe in the impossible.. fundamentally, most GodMen r either fugitives already, or committ heinous crimes towards the greed to aquire power, influence or even money.

I always wanted to read this book since the day I saw this published because I want to understand the mindset of such brillant police officers while working on such a high profile case.
How the political angle effect such cases by giving vague orders to bureaucracy. I didn't followed the whole story of Asharam live when this happened, so can't verify the authenticity of events mentioned in the book, but with my reading experience I can say, they look real for sure. The event from the start till the judgement portion is explained as a first hand account and as much detail as possible. The political angle is edited in some part I feel, that sir being an IPS officer is quiet understandable.

ENGAGING, TAUT THRILLER
I am not much of a reader, but I had heard of this case, so decided to read it. Trust me, this book pulled me in like none other! Congratulations to the efforts of the authors - Ajay Lamba and Sanjeev Mathur and the publisher - Harper Collins for bringing a gem of a book out.

I really enjoyed reading this book on audio - it’s a true crime podcast and the sequence of events creates a great air of mystery and thrill.
A well written true crime book from India about a pedophile saint who got punished for his vile acts.

A superb first-hand account of the investigation, arrest and trial that convicted the Godman in the sensational case that rocked the nation! The book is brilliantly written reproducing conversations verbatim between the cops, accused and all other principal characters, giving the reader a thorough and unique insight into the minds and challenges faced by the investigating officers, and the psyche of the accused; it also includes the FIR of the survivor. After reading this book, one cannot help but admire and applaud the honesty, integrity and persistence of the Jodhpur Police Force, along with the bravery of the survivor, which resulted in bringing down such a powerful person amidst dire threats and various acts of intimidation. A spectacular debut by DCP Ajay Lamba and Sanjeev Mathur, this is one of those phenomenal page-turners that keeps you spellbound and riveted throughout!

This book is NOT worth spending time and money on.
The poor writing style displays the urgency for the author to work on their English, grammatical and story building skills. The story is heavily dramatized and uses a very pre-conceptualised approach.
It seems like a carefully woven story with cruel intentions.
No true reflection of the incident is revealed at any given point, where only a false and dishonest narrative remains.
The author lacks any logical explanation on how their ideas intertwine to Asaram's situation and lacks conclusion.
Everything is too repetitive as the same illogical idea repeats itself in different forms.
It is obvious that the author lacks expertise on the incident and the image of the Godman he tries to portray.
The book is clearly stitched inappropriately with a pre-conceptualised objective rather than a reflection of the truth.

As a citizen of the period that witnessed the affair of the conviction of Godman Asaram, it surprised me how the police managed to do its job in such an effective manner. Make no mistake, I’m not trying to cast aspersions on DCP Ajay Lamba and his team. But given how the rich and powerful seem to get away with practically everything in the modern society, there was an apprehension that the man, who had a following in crores, would surely find this loophole or that to stay out of jail. It’d have disappointed a lot of people had that happened, not least the victim who filed the FIR against Asaram. But to the general public, it’d also have been another “what-else-did-you-expect” moment. That the Jodhpur police, led by the aforementioned DCP Ajay Lamba, made sure the guilty was convicted, is a heartwarming story on its own.
DCP Lamba has co-written this book alongwith Sanjeev Mathur. The writing style is lucid. The authors have made sure that the layman reader can also understand the legal underpinnings of the whole procedure. At every point, when there’s a risk of the text getting heavy, there are enough explainers to counter that. The first-person account also allows us to get a peek into his mind. Of course we’ve all read and watched a lot of crime and detective fiction. But the true-crime aspect of the story elevates this book from another run-of-the-mill police procedural. That the crime and the furore are still fresh in the public mind adds to the pull of the book.
The book opens with a brief life history of Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani, the man who took on the title of Asaram Bapu. Once this finishes, it jumps straight to the day when DCP Lamba got information about the FIR filed against the godman. From there, it proceeds in a clear chronological order. DCP Lamba takes us through the way he assembled a team, engaged in mind games with Asaram and his lawyers, and made sure the victim’s courage and gumption were supported throughout by the police and the prosecution team.
A revealing aspect of the book, for those who weren’t following the coverage of the case at the time, is how the Jodhpur police had to play almost a game of chess with Asaram and co. while making sure that the law and order situation remained under control. Arresting him was a big challenge indeed, but taking him from one city to another, with all the hullabaloo from his supporters in both the cities, required heist movie-level planning. Similarly, getting the right team of prosecutors was another big challenge. We now know that the police succeeded, but the knowledge of it doesn’t make the read any less thrilling.
A minor quibble I have with the book are with passages where a few aspects seem to have been repeated. With all due respect to the officers involved in the case, after a certain point, it became repetitive to read that there was a danger on the team and that the police were dead certain not to let Asaram get away with it.
Another issue, and this is actually a credit to the book, is that the book finishes too soon. It grips you right at the start. It makes you feel all the aspects of the fight. But in a matter of 200-odd pages, it just finishes. I said earlier that this is credit to the book. That’s because the book’s brevity ensures that even casual readers won’t feel bogged down. On my part though, I’d have loved to have some more detail on the investigation process and the sort of machinations from within the system, if any, that the officers had to face. Then again, it’s a fine balance to keep between exhaustiveness and compactness, and I think the authors have tread that best.
The-then outrage against the criminal case and the continuing scourge of violence that women across social strata continue to face in our country says a lot about our society at large. But this book shows us that a dedicated team of law enforcers can make sure that even the most powerful of law breakers face justice. In the bleakness that is 2020, this is a ray of hope.

The book starts by giving a brief summary of Asaram’s entire life, from the time he was born, his younger years, personal life, his rise in later years as a famous saint and the reach of his Ashrams and followers. The book has been written by Ajay Lamba(IPS) the then DCP(West) of Jodhpur who headed the investigation team hence the book is a first-hand account of all the happenings.
In August 2013, a young girl studying twelfth standard in one of the schools run by Asaram and housed at the Gurukul hostel, was taken for treatment to the Godman after her hostel warden convinced her as under the influence of evil spirits. On the pretext of treatment, she was sexually assaulted and raped by the Godman; her parents who were staunch followers of Asaram, soon lodge a complaint after realizing the injustice that happened to their daughter. As soon as the details of the case are shared, the DCP springs into action and in the next ten days, the Jodhpur police arrested Asaram at his Indore ashram.
The book details the meticulous planning and execution that was required by the police force to arrest such a high-profile personality who had thousands of followers and important connections in the political circles. Starting from selecting and forming multiple teams, assigning respective tasks, coordinating these teams, briefing the media daily , handling hostile followers— DCP Ajay recollects how this herculean task was successfully accomplished as his team even worked without a break for forty-eight hours before the arrest.
The struggle of the investigating team does not end with filing the charge sheet and submitting all the evidences in the court, as most of the team are transferred before the court proceedings are complete and multiple hurdles are created as the case is taken to closure. The author reminisces the innumerable threats to himself, family and the team who were deployed on the task and what kept him going in the middle of extreme challenges. Since the book is narrated by the person who headed the entire investigation, even the minute details of this case are captured while not dragging the pace.
The author impresses with a balanced outlook, by not glorifying either the crime or the accomplishments of his team. The judicial details of the case like the IPC Sections involved, evidences, co-accused are also detailed which make the book an authentic account. As common people we quickly judge the police force as biased and controlled by the politicians, but this case proves when the people upholding the law and order of the country perform their duty honestly despite the million hurdles, the stature and clout of the accused does not matter at the end.
A true crime account that is narrated with utmost sincerity, this book is a must read if you are intrigued to know what went behind the conviction of one of the most popular godman of the country.

Seeing as Asaram bapu was in news all over the place when he was convicted in 2018, we might get an impression that we know everything there is to know about him. Afterall, the various news reports covered it in extensive details.
This book however is most useful for people like me who had heard about the case but never had any intention to dig further into the story. In fact, the reason I picked this book up was because it was written by an IPS officer. My curiosity was not about Asaram and his case, it was about how he managed to game the system to stay free for so long and after all these years, what finally brought him down? Navigating infested waters of Indian political and judicial system is a well crafted skill that not everyone possess. What was special about this man that he was able to keep his con up for so long.
In the quest to understand the complexity of the system and the man, I would argue that even the people familiar with the case would find something of value in this book.
Right from the beginning this is a police case recounting of the rape of minor. While the crime itself was heinous, what was even more repelling about the case was the way the man behaved. With almost no regard at first tonthe rule of law, then crying and using every trick in the book of goons.
We think of going to police when we are in trouble, now imagine who would they go to when their life is in danger? This book humanised the officers who are trying to do their best while creating an island of excellence in this sea of apathy from the force in general.
Some of the most impressive tactics were at display throughout the handling of the case. The arrest in Indore was my favourite in the way police were able to out think the mob. Officer Lamba's strategic mind is the spine on which this narrative is built.
In the end, there was a little bit of luck that it happened too soon after Nirbhaya and the first case was registered in Delhi. Had it been in Jodhpur, who knows, this case would've been dead on arrival.
Kudos to the police officers, the judges, the unsung heroes who protected their family when Officer Lamba's village was supposed to be attacked, but most of all to the parents and the victim who dug in come what may. In the face of multiple killings of the prosecution witnesses, I cannot imagine the courage that everyone had to show to get through the entire trial.

The media was in a frenzy when the godman Asaram Bapu was accused of raping a minor. Although the details of the trial and the conviction are public news, little was known about how the notorious godman was brought to book. A team led by Ajay Lamba, then DCP Jodhpur (West) arrested the godman within just ten days of filing of the FIR. Gunning for the Godman: The True Story Behind Asaram Bapu’s Conviction by Ajay Lamba with Sanjeev Mathur gives you the inside story.
The book is an extremely detailed account of the investigation. Right from the first complaint by the victim to the final verdict. We are introduced to each team member. Made privy to the exact thought process that went into selecting them. The struggles of the Jodhpur Police team with jurisdictions, legal loopholes, political and departmental pressure. The subtle and not so subtle threats that the team received (and continue to receive). The “regular” transfers to weaken the case. And the tactics used by the defense lawyers.
The book begins with a short biography of Asamaram Bapu. It tracks his beginning as a refugee from Sindh (now in Pakistan) to the godly status. What follows is quite a pageturner and some sections do read like a thriller. The writing style is simple. There are a few conversations that are included verbatim but do not take away from the narrative. Post the verdict, the author also provides minute details of the sections under which the godman was convicted.

The book begins with a short biography of Asamaram Bapu. It tracks his beginning as a refugee from Sindh (now in Pakistan) to the godly status. What follows is quite a pageturner and some sections do read like a thriller. The writing style is simple. There are a few conversations that are included verbatim but do not take away from the narrative. Post the verdict, the author also provides minute details of the sections under which the godman was convicted.

MY REVIEW:
The well-known (disreputed) God man Asaram Bapu, is known for his so-called "spiritual and godly personality" was arrested on the charge of assulting a minor under the POCSO Act. Little did everybody know that this arrest would open a while can of worms to the shady and disgraceful empire of Asaram alias Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani. This book provides a hands-on account of the entire case as it is presented by the chief officer of the investigating team, DCP Jodhpur, IPS Ajay Lamba. It makes you feel like a first-hand witness to the case. It is minutely detailed in its presentation that's something obvious as it comes firm the desk of a law upholder. It is a professional habit for these legal officers to be minutely specific about the entire case. But at a certain point, it feels as lot stretchy as some very trival and irrelevant points are also mentioned, which I guess just to increase the length of the book. Otherwise, it's quite an interesting read and must say it is no less thrilling than a detective novel. It has ignited the interest formore true crime reads.
The author Sanjay Manthur has presented account of the officer in his exact words as it can be seen in the work. A definit one-time read.

3.5 Star for the Book - A Definite read
Courageous real-time story of David Vs Goliath happening around us. The evident fall of Asaram and is carefully depicted by Mr. Ajay Lamba, showing us the true nature of the Godman and the fasad around him are nothing just some deliberate spiderwebs.
The part where Asaram was arrested, was fascinating and almost looked like our Bollywood climax and better. The police had so much learned from the previous Ram Rahim incident a year back.
Although we got an inside scoop of how the police were working on this case, It was written in the color of black and white and no shades of Gray. Everything was good at the police end and no politics of it was mentioned, a narrative that deliberately keeps itself on the line of Satyamev Jayate, which is understandable as Mr. Ajay Lamba is yet to complete his service but still interesting.
The story of the victim and police are inspiring and credit to the victim, the victim's parent, all the witness (some whom are dead during this trial), and the Jodhpur police team for their planning execution and then watertight paperwork which helped in eventually convicting Asaram.

Gunning for the Godmen was not only a riveting read, it made me feel proud of the Indian Police Force and the judicial system in India. Even the free press played its part. I admire the bravery and tenacity of Ajay Lamba and his team that brought justice to an underprivileged, vulnerable victim despite all odds. There is a ton of information in a case like this, and the authors have deftly picked and presented a highly readable account of events. I particularly liked the part where we get an insight to the inner conflicts of Lamba's mind and his true values triumphing over his fears. With people like him serving the nation, the authors for bringing the story to the public, and the publisher standing by both, my faith that justice can prevail even against the mighty and influential, is restored. Even though you know the end, the authors maintain the suspense and pace. A highly recommended read.

Gunning for the Godman is a must-must read in true accounts. It has been written by Ajay Lamba (IPS) and coauthored by Sanjeev Mathur. Ajay Lamba was in charge of the investigations. This makes the book so authentic. It was a difficult case for the police as Asaram's followers include top political leaders of all prominent parties. The book is based on a story that starts from the FIR in Delhi and ends at the conviction of Asaram in Jodhpur. It has all the elements of a potboiler, but the truth in this case is stronger than any fiction. The writing style is crisp. Officers like Ajay Lamba makes me feel proud to be an Indian. The book is unputdownable and forces you to keep turning the pages till you reach the end. Highly recommended.

This is the true story behind the capture and conviction of Asaram Bapu in a case of rape of a minor. The author Ajay Lamba is the IPS officer who was the head of the investigation for the same case. He along with Sanjeev Mathur has done a good job with the writing of the book. The style is lucid and it seems like a crime thriller going at a tremendous pace. With only 200 pages it is a fast read. If you like the genre then you should definitely give it a go.

Self styled God man Asaram has many followers who are well educated and are in positions if power. They have stalled further printing of the book as of now. I mentioned this as I know a few of them and have seen the level of fanaticism. Considering these facts, its amazing that this sort of a book has come out. It contains mostly the details of the investigation, perils faced by the team and the conclusion. Its well written (and is easy to read and understand).This is a must read for anyone who believes that "crime never pays".

A simple no holds barred account by the investigating officer in the asaram case about the strategy for investigation, arrest and subsequent fight for justice for the victim. It's written simply, lucidly and fearlessly. It's a good account of the case and gives an understanding of the workings of our criminal justice system, how evidence is collected and how asaram, with his muscle power and money power tried in vain to thwart the victim. Read to get a sense of the case against a powerful godman in india, and the stand of the victim and police in getting justice delivered.

One of the best books I have read, 'Gunning for the Godman' is a book that everyone must read. This true incident which happened a few years ago is well known and documented, but the thrill of reading the way in which a determined effort by Ajay Lamba and his police force to nail the culprit, the powerful Asaram Bapu, a self styled Godman, in the words of the Police Officer himself is extraordinary. The writing style of Sanjeev Mathur is excellent and almost unveils the incident in the format of a movie thriller. An engrossing non-fiction tale which reads like fiction.

It took me weeks to get this book delivered since it went out of print due to legal issues. And I must admit that it was worth the wait. The book is as gripping as a thriller, only that the incident is true and that makes a reader dig deeper into the narrative. The writing is lucid and keeps a reader engrossed. I look forward to the visual adaptation now.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. Kept me hooked from the start to the finish. It has a complete movie appeal to it despite being a true story. How Ajay Lamba lands the case, how he forms the team and how they nab the Godman has been wonderfully narrated by Sanjeev Mathur and makes for a very compelling read.

Insightful and thought provoking account of Asaram's final fate
It is a good book to read as it details the account of how Asaram the Godman was brought to justice. Salute to Ajay Sir and his team for their wonderful work that lead to Asaram's arrest and finally sealed his fate. Thank you!!! A must read!!! Not for Asaram Bhakts though :p
