It was the contribution by the brilliant writer and teacher of horror Madison Estes that drew my attention to Road Kill: Texas Horror by Texas Writers vol. 5, published by the ever-awesome HellBound Books, and it’s safe to say my attention remained throughout.

Although all the writers did an ace job, Madison’s Twilight Zone-esque episode of insanity exhibited profound imagination and, I have to say, depravity, as well as a black humour perfectly fitting of the ordeal at hand. I can’t give anything away with a story so rich in concept and inventiveness, but I will say I’ll never hear the bleep of a microwave the same way ever again.

As always from HellBound Books, the talent in this collection is stellar, and Madison’s opening nightmare only paves the way for stories that descend deeper into darkness with every turn of the page.

Congrats to all the contributors and HellBound Books on a grotesquely brilliant volume.
