When a Highlander who won’t marry...
The last thing Ronan Calder needs is marriage. He’s got enough to worry about without a wife. After losing his sister and mother in childbirth, he has no desire to relive such tragedy or to inflict it upon another woman he loves. If he could convince his father as much, everything would go according to plan.
Unfortunately, his brutish father insists on parading potential wives before him as often as he can arrange it. Not once has a single simpering lass captured his attention. Not once, that is, until Ronan mistakes the clan’s new scholar for his father’s latest attempt to sway him to marry.
Meets the only woman who’s ever tempted him...
Barred from study at Oxford because she is a woman, Adelina Matheson ventures deep in the Scottish Highlands to prove herself a true scholar. Sparks fly when the laird’s son mistakes her for his future bride–before he discovers her true identity, that is. With her heart pulling her toward Ronan, Adelina knows she’s risking her future. What she doesn’t realize is that she’s also risking her life.
Their love threatens to destroy everything.
As their worlds collide in a whirlwind of danger, intrigue, and passion, Ronan and Adelina must decide if their love is worth the incredible cost.
A Highland Autumn is a forbidden love, noble/commoner, steamy medieval Highland romance. It can be read as a standalone, or as the first book in the Seasons of Scotland series.
Sophia has been writing down stories since she learned how to use a pencil. She loves learning almost as much as she loves writing, pursuing both her undergraduate and master’s degrees. Most of her studies involved Ireland and England, and she is excited to expand her research into Scotland. She’s been thoroughly enjoying the background reading!
After marrying her high school sweetheart, attending grad school, and moving nearly ten times in as many years, Sophia and her husband settled into a lake house in northern Indiana. They live happily in the middle of nowhere with two little boys, two atrociously rude doggos, and one ornery cat.
Oh how I love a heroine with an attitude! lol I thoroughly enjoyed this story written by Sophia Nye, a new to me author. Well written with plenty of adventure and excitement to keep you turning the pages.
Imagine being the first female scholar at Oxford?!! That is Adelina's greatest wish and when she's offered a chance to prove herself, little does she know the trouble she will get herself in! I so enjoyed the banter between her and Ronan, the Laird's son. She can give as good as she gets:) Not only is she out to prove herself, she's asked to decode a clue that has to do with naming a traitor amongst the clan and time is running out, danger lurking in every corner. In between all of that, she's fallen for Ronan but knows that he will never marry her because she is common born. He also thinks his clan is cursed and doesn't want to endanger her but sometimes it takes love to overcome all!!
Definitely a book worth reading and I look forward to reading more from this author.
There are some solid lovely portions of this book, particularly in the author's descriptions of the landscape, surroundings, events, etc. I particularly was struck by the description of the backyard of Adelina's father's home towards the end, and by the description of a wall crumbling from heat.
However, while the story idea was a good one, the execution wasn't strong. The biggest issue is lack of depth in the characters, especially the main characters. Both Adelina and Ronan come off as spoiled and temperamental juveniles, and I found it difficult to connect with them on any level.
Secondly, as with most people who would pick up a Highland romance novel, I'm a huge fan of the Outlander series. While it isn't entirely fair to compare an author's freshman effort to such a series, the truth is that this is the same genre but comes off as a YA attempt at same...until you hit the sex scene, which was unfortunately about as short and bland as an inexperienced couple's first time.
Thirdly, while adding local slang terms to the actual dialogue portions is good, over using them in the text between conversations is overkill and comes off as trying too hard. It actually distracts from the story itself.
I'm not trying to be intentionally harsh, just giving an honest critique as I feel that Ms. Nye could definitely grow this into a much stronger series.
I romance with a little mystery and a dash of danger.
This is my first time reading this author. I enjoyed her characters in this time. Nice blend of spice and character development. I like all the little nuances like the offensive sending a woman to be the scholar or her struggles to get into Oxford etc.
3.5 stars...my initial reaction when I started read this was something like: wow...this is NOT well written. But...I gave it a chance. It's not that there were grammar errors or misspellings or anything like that...it's just very simplistic and doesn't feel fleshed out. But I will say that I LIKED these characters. It's a very predictable story...nothing memorable or surprising here...but the more I read the more I got into it and at least wanted to see everything play out. Can't say that I'd recommend it or that I have plans to read more from the author...but I don't regret reading it and it passed the time.
If you have a love for a good Scottish medieval love story then this book is for you. It is a wonderful story of love conquering all, in a time when societies classes did not marry beneath them. In a time when females did not attend universities to further their education, nor be employed to positions of power. A time when Scotland and England were at war. It really is a great story, a history lesson wrapped up in intrigue, betrayal and fear.
The adventure was really exciting and interesting. The characters were amazing. The intrigue was so awesome for the last few chapters I was on the edge of my seat. Thanks for sharing your story and can't wait to read the next adventure.
This book is captivating from start to finish! The characters have a lot of depth, and they really come to life as you read. Within these pages, you will find a delightful romance, enticing action, adventure, and a compelling plot. It's easy to get drawn into the world in this story and not want to come back! Great for fans of many genres, I definitely recommend this book if you need an uplifting read.
Adelina wants to be the first woman in Oxford. She is smart enough but not of Nobel blood. She was sent to the highlands to be a scholar. Ronan son of lard Calder doesn’t want to marry but one look at Adelina and her red hair turned him to jelly. There was a fire and Adelina saved the Lairds life. It didn’t attempt if she wasn’t a Nobel Ronan is going to marry her.
Great Book! Twists and turns along with harrowing experiences. Adeline was a great character with a strong will. Ronan was a little weak but showed strength later in the book. Descriptions of the area and what was happening were good. A must read.
Some books just warm the heart. Some characters just make you smile. The banter between the main characters of Sophia Nye’s A Highland Autumn had me grinning throughout most of the story.
The heroine Adelina is beautiful, brilliant, and she has attitude! Her personality matches her glorious red hair. Given the circumstances she finds herself in, she needs every ounce of strength she can pull from within – and she rises to the occasion.
My favorite thing about the hero is his modern, open-minded way of thinking. Ronan doesn’t immediately acknowledge his feelings for Adelina, but I believe he loves her from the moment he sees her. What’s very obvious is that he cares so much, is so drawn to her, that he hardly knows what to do with himself.
From the halls of Oxford University to the Scottish Highlands, from Latin musings to murder, A Highland Autumn twists and turns its way to a very satisfying conclusion.
The book bio promises steam, it’s barely steamy. The plot and the assassin was just very meh. Even the interactions between the MCs weren’t very chemistry filled. Ronan was an ok character and Adelina was an ok character, but overall both were uninspiring. The supposed romance between them wasn’t crafted very well and the way Adelina finally gets admittance into Oxford is kinda lame. I guess it has a HEA but I also expected more from that too. A wedding night. Or a baby, especially since that was the whole reason Ronan refused marriage. But no, it’s just Adelina walking into Oxford.
