im more of a killian girl myself, so i was bummed this prequel focuses on marcus instead. but i completely understand why.

the 37th legion has always been famous in the dark shores books, so its fun to get a firsthand account of the event that created their notoriety. i also enjoyed agrippa - hes a wonderful character for comic relief. this book does a great job at showcasing his connection to marcus, which readers will want for ‘gilded serpent.’

and while this story is enjoyable, its just such a pet-peeve of mine when authors write prequels that are relevant to the main series plot, but dont publish them until after a few books. why not start the series with the prequel and give the readers what they need first? its so annoying to get the information after its useful.

so its unfortunate that readers will most likely have already read the two books in the series, but i do think its good for readers to pick this up before ‘gilded serpent’ next month. agrippa plays a role, so its worth being introduced to him and knowing his background.

overall, this is a good supplementary text that gives readers additional insight into characters pasts and the dark shores world in general - i just wish we had gotten it sooner.

Reviewers say it gives them the same vibes as Spartacus, 300, Troy, Gladiator, and The Song of Achilles

1. It is a full length young adult NOVEL at 70k words, although it is shorter than most of the novels I write. But is most definitely NOT A NOVELLA.

2. It takes place in the same world as my YA epic fantasy series DARK SHORES, but a few years earlier.
3. It contains a fairly significant amount of romance.
4. You do NOT need to have read DARK SHORES to read TARNISHED EMPIRE (you can start with TARNISHED EMPIRE).
5. It has 3 points of view (so is multi POV). Marcus (one of the point of view characters) is a main character in DARK SHORES.

Triggers: Swearing, violence, war, sexual content, character death, alcohol consumption.

For anyone who's wondering what the reading order is for this series:
- you can read Tarnished Empire
- you can read Dark Shores
AND
- you can read Dark Skies in any order
BUT ALL THREE MUST BE READ BEFORE READING Gilded Serpent!!!

In comparison to other prequels that I’ve read, this is more than a novella with over 200 pages of Ancient Roman perfection, so it's actually more of a companion novel. <3 Unlike the first two books in this series, this is more mature and faster paced, as it throws you straight into the action! Yay!

It follows the perspective of Marcus, the legatus of the 37th Legion, who is a strategical genius that we later meet in Dark Shores. However, we also get perspectives from two new characters: (1) the 37th’s primus, the sassy Agrippa, who definitely kept me laughing and (2) Silvara, a laundress who is tasked with seducing and spying on Agrippa, and unfortunately, I couldn’t bloody stand her!!! :/

I’ve always been #TeamMarcus, so naturally, I absolutely loved him here. Although I will say that for something being advertised as a “Marcus prequel”, it seemed to be more centred on Agrippa and Silvara? This was a shame because I feel like we didn’t spend as much time with Marcus as we could have. There was so much to be explored in terms of his backstory that I feel like there were some squandered opportunities here. Regardless, his was my favourite perspective to read. My poor baby had all the lives of the 37th on his shoulder as he had to juggle keeping them safe, navigating legion politics, and trying to limit as much bloodshed as possible. He never wanted to be fighting this war, but nor did he have a choice, and nor would he leave his men to fend for themselves. He is a strong and just leader to the very end and I love him.

Agrippa quickly burrowed his way into my heart with his sass and humour the moment that he arrived on page, yet I will admit that his constant animosity towards Marcus (aka his superior) out of jealousy and his incessant poor decisions by disregarding orders - which later left the Legion vulnerable to sabotage via Silvara and company - did make me less keen on him as the story progressed. But by the time the end of the book came around, I was heavily invested in his character arc and thus, SHOOKETH by the ending! (How on Earth could you leave it like THAT, Danielle? I DEMAND ANSWERS!!!) I can’t wait to see what becomes of him in Gilded Serpent because, as he is a new character, we don’t see what he’s up to in the other two books.

Silvara was a very wishy-washy character who I wished didn’t have a perspective (two perspectives were more than enough…let’s be real here). I can’t put my finger on why I disliked her as soon as she appeared, but I did. Usually I enjoy when the female character enters into a relationship with the male one with the intention of being their undoing, only to fall in love with him (see: Cruel Beauty, The Shadows Between Us, The Bridge Kingdom, etc.) but it just DID NOT WORK FOR ME HERE. I think part of the problem is that she was a generally weak character. Unlike the ladies in the aforementioned books, she’s not a strong, badarse heroine. Rather, she’s very whingey and lax in her spying. She has a hundred reasons as to why she can’t do certain things and doesn’t actually accomplish anything. She wants to save her people, but doesn’t want to harm Agrippa either, which is understandable, but her inaction only makes a bad situation worse. Ugh. I really hope that her role in the future books will be lessened to a degree because I truly did not see the purpose in making her a major character. She didn’t bring anything to the story, in my opinion, aside from a lukewarm romance.

All in all, I really loved this book. It’s not a very emotionally heavy read, which I appreciated. Instead, the action occurred at breakneck speed, while I hung on for dear life, enjoying every last second of it. Despite being longer than average for a prequel, I still found it too short, which makes it a success in my book. The best authors always leave their readers satisfied, yet still hoping for more, which Danielle definitely did here. It has everything going for it: politics, battles, humour, loss, jealousy, betrayal, loyalty… I can’t wait to see all of them again in Gilded Serpent!!!

Glory always had a price.

This is described as being a "Marcus prequel", but it's honestly more about Agrippa, and it's okay because I really like him.

You can read Tarnished Empire before or after reading Dark Shores and Dark Skies, but I would recommend reading it before Gilded Serpent .

This novella is a little over 200 pages of battle strategies and fighting with an Ancient Roman vibe. It is more similar to Dark Shores than Dark Skies, but it felt more mature than the other books in the series, probably because we see more of the conquest strategizing and fighting. It is also fast-paced and full of humor and action. I really had a good time reading it.

Tarnished Empire is told from Marcus's, Agrippa's, and Silvara's points of view. It happens while the 37th is under the command of the 29th and their cruel leader. Both Legions are "working together" trying to conquer the city of Hydrilla before winter comes, but it’s no secret that the men of the 29th are abusing their power over the 37th, and Marcus cannot wait for his legion to be free of the horrible 29th. We get to see the strategic genius that is Marcus, and if you loved him in Dark Shores, you will probably love him even more after reading Tarnished Empire.

One big surprise for me was Agrippa. He is a funny, sarcastic, and very clever character, and he definitely made me laugh out loud a few times. We also get to know Silvara, a laundress part of the camp of followers (people who follow the legion to exchange their services for money) and tasked by the rebel forces to seduce Agrippa and try to learn the big plan for conquering the city of Hydrilla.

I did not care much for Silvara, mainly because she was working against Marcus and Agrippa and I love them both. I really enjoyed learning more about the tough choices that Marcus has to make as a Legatus and about how he is trying to keep his legion brothers safe while navigating legion politics and also trying to prevent the mass murder of everyone in Hydrilla. I also loved to read the playful banter between Agrippa and everyone else and to see how he was juggling between respecting and even admiring Marcus, and also hating him for what he did to him to gain the position of Legatus of the 37th.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book, and it does help me understand better some things I read in Gilded Serpents. If you like the Dark Shores series, I strongly recommend reading this novella!

Tarnished Empire is a prequel installment to Danielle L. Jensen's Dark Shores series.

Released in January of 2021, this story was just what I needed to tide me over until Gilded Serpent, the third book in the series, was released. It was oh, so satisfying.

In this story, we learn more about the notorious 37th Legion, which Marcus leads as Commander. If you've read Dark Shores, you should be well acquainted with him.

You may recall Marcus as being a smart, powerful and fair leader. In this story, he's not quite as accomplished, or respected, as he will be someday.

He and his men are assigned to an outlying territory to squash the last resistance to the Senate's rule. It's a sticky situation with a lot of innocent people falling into harms way.

Agrippa, a soldier in the 37th, and a friend of Marcus, plays a central role in this narrative. He is a charming and engaging character, who brought some light humor to the mix.

I loved Agrippa and was happy to hear that we are going to be getting more of him in Gilded Serpent!

His romantic interest, Silvara, is a washer woman, who is secretly part of the resistance. When Agrippa and Silvara begin a relationship, it's anyone's guess what secrets will be shared between them.

Overall, I found this to be a good story. It kept me engaged and I really enjoyed the action scenes, as well as the behind the scenes political maneuverings.

I loved learning more of Marcus' backstory, as well as more about the Dark Shores world in general. This is the type of world where every detail is interesting.

Jensen's world-building is top notch. This series is currently underrated in my opinion. If you are sleeping on it, wait no longer.

Start this series!! It's so good!

Personally, if we were to discuss reading order, I would recommend reading them in publication order.

Even though this is a prequel, I would read Dark Shores and Dark Skies prior to this one.

Wow, what was the 2nd half??? 🤯🤯🤯

August 24th, 2021
Tarnished Empire is the prequel to the Dark Shores series. Do not go in expecting a full-fledged novel with character and plot development even though it is the length of a full novel. This prequel is a START to great series. It sets up characters and plot points in an excellent manner for the beginning of an epic story.

Agrippa is by far my favorite character in this story. I loved his sense of humor and charisma! He brightens up the gloomy setting and brings out the best in all other characters. I am very interested in how things will move on for him outside of this novel. I can't wait to find out, I think he will be making a presence in the 4th book.

Marcus is definitely an interesting character. I know there is more to him than just a loyal and duty-bound protector of the 37th legion. This prequel allows for a quick peek at Marcus, but unlike Agrippa, his character is still left a large part mystery.

The second half was my favorite; it was filled with action and plot twists. For a prequel, I'm pretty impressed. The first half was slow, but I understand that it was to lead into the second half. However; still wish the was a little more to the first half.

Anyways, great prequel. I already have the first book on my Libby shelf, expect the review for book 1 soon!

Loved this! Dark Shores by, Danielle Jensen makes so much more sense with this Prequel/Novella. After reading Dark Shores, I felt like I needed some backstory, and Tarnished Empire fills in the gaps that were missing from the first book. If you like stories of ancient Rome, forbidden romance, and legionnaires fighting to survive a ruthless Senate..look no further.

This book leaves you wanting more! The pacing is fast and action packed. The romance is so good and heartbreaking. I'm definitely team Agrippa now! I'm excited to start reading Dark Skies to see how the story progresses.

Agrippa.

That’s it.

That’s the review.

I’m lying 🤣. But Jesus Christ if I don’t worship the ground he walks on...that man is perfection.

So anyways a little backstory, I’ve only read Dark Shores and I did like it....but I did NOT care about Marcus one bit. Knowing this was mostly from the perspective of Marcus is what made me a little less interested to pick this up, but then I looked at the gorgeous art Gabi did for Agrippa and I was...I was at his mercy 🤣.

So when I went into this I was a bit frustrated because I couldn’t recall any of the major plot points from Dark Shores 😭 and I’m suuure there were some connections and nods to Dark Shores that the version of me with a decent memory would have picked up on.

The thirty-seven legion was aaaamazing. I loved that we get to learn more about them and their previous conquests. Their various enemies and how they basically liberated themselves from them. I loved—despite not loving HIM—the relationship with Marcus and Agrippa. Their bromance was adorable and very complicated. I just enjoyed all of it.

Now moving on to A G R I P P A.

This hilarious, beautiful man.

As soon as he walked into the page I was just butter. Him and Silvara were an instant ship for me. Even though Silvara is....HER (I won’t spoil) I still shipped them. I loved their cute moments where Agrippa would carry the laundry for her and she would blush and smile 🥺.

I just...I just loved the entire dynamic, the way their relationship was forbidden, the way Agrippa was vulnerable when he was with her... ALL OF IT.

Okay after my beta read I’m going to reread Dark Shores because I think Danielle finally reeled me in with this little book.

Re-reading this one, feels like coming home after having not read anything in this world for quite some time now. I feel like this prequel book is such a magnificent addition to this series and am happy I started with this one again for my re-read of the entire series in preparation for the release of Scorched Earth.

ORIGINAL REVIEW '20:

Troy meets gladiator and 300 in this awesome new addition to the dark shores series. This was such a great read!

I Loved reading all three pov’s and there’s yet again a fantastic balance regarding (among other things) politics, storyline development, character development and romance. And then there’s also Danielle’s addictive and impeccable writing style of course, which is just the icing to the cake and makes it an unputdownable read from beginning till end.

Cant wait to now do a reread of dark shores & dark skies And to afterwards then delving into my e-arc of Gilded serpent that’s been waiting on my kindle to be read!

Gods, how I love this world and Danielle’s writing so incredibly much! If there’s a new ya author/book series you want to pick up, make sure it’s a book by Danielle l. Jensen (ANY will do 💖) I truly cant recommend her writing enough!!

And my friends that’s how it’s done- Danielle Jenson is the master of her skill and this is another perfect example, detailed review to come ❤️

Tarnished empire is another peek into the massive Dark Shores world that Danielle has graciously blessed us with. It happens before dark shores but don't let that take you a step back from this because the book falls nothing short of its successors, if you loved Marcus from Dark Shores this is your chance to see him and learn more about him as he starts his journey as a Legatus of the 37th. What came as a huge surprise is how the author tightly yet masterfully packed such a rich plot into a mere 200+ pages book, if this doesn't speak volumes about Danielle's brilliant writing I don't know what else can

The plot line is simple yet completely filled to brim with tension, political intrigue and a test to the loyalties within the brethren of the legionnaire's, the added bonus to this incredible book is a heavy dose of sarcastic humor brought to you by my newest book boyfriend Agrippa- The primus of the 37th, his effortless sense of humor, wit and brutal handsomeness added such a flair to the book, I wondered if he even overshadowed Marcus at times which again is completely justified if he did.

Silviara the infiltrating laundress from a rebel camp is perfect match to Agrippa, the romance per usual is intense, bold and swooning just as how it is in every other Danielle's book, the woman knows how to write a good romance along with playing with your feelings by twisting your insides ;) the forbidden love trait adds tensions to the already edgy plot which makes it a binge worthy book. A very special mention to Agnes who is equally charming and might make your sassy grandma look like an angel (in a good way)

Don't miss to read this beautifully crafted masterpiece which will take the experience of reading upcoming release "Gilded Serpent" a few steps higher

TBH I almost didn't read this - who are we kidding, I am physically unable to leave well enough alone lol.

Dark Shores & Dark Skies were cool, but I didn't feel that rush, ya know??

This was so interesting and schemy and nuanced.
Part of me wished I had read this first?
But I also have a deeper appreciation for this story and this world after having read DS1 & DS2.

I'm looking forward to diving into my ARC of Gilded Serpent!
There are a lot of balls in the air right now, so many things to see through,
but I have faith that DLJ will do it masterfully.

The second time I’m writing this review because Goodreads ate the first review I tried to post. And spent 30 min writing. I was really proud of it too UGHHHHH. Trying again.

“Glory always had a price.”

Tarnished Empire is easily one of my new favorite DLJ books, and easily my favorite book of the Dark Shores world. Though significantly shorter than her other works, Tarnished Empire packs sooo much goodness into every single page. Filled with action, romance, humor, conflict...Tarnished Empire perfectly sets us up for Gilded Serpents later this spring.

Though you can read the first three books in any order, I’d recommend starting with Tarnished Empire, then reading Dark Shores, and then reading Dark Skies. Regardless, you need to read all three books prior to Gilded Serpents. If you don’t read Tarnished Empire, you’ll be really confused when a certain witty, handsome character walks onto the page in Gilded Serpents.

Speaking of witty and handsome, I am in love with Agrippa. He’s by far my favorite character of the Dark Shores world. He’s hilarious, handsome, intelligent, loyal, and he cares deeply for those he loves. He’s not just some soldier...he’s so much more than that. I’m desperately needing to be reunited with him in Gilded Serpents. Like, ASAP.

Thanks so much to Literary Bounds Tours and Danielle Jensen for providing me an early copy to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“What good is proof when the culprit is judge and jury?”

Hail to the queen because Danielle L Jensen just played with my feelings again and I’m not even mad about it.

Set in the world of Dark Shores, Tarnished Empire is another masterpiece that I thoroughly enjoyed reading from the beginning till end. I am #TeamMarcus through and through however, the introduction of a new character in this world inspired by Ancient Rome made me question my loyalty.

This book made me laugh so much from the first few chapters and then a moment of realization came when I was already tearing up and remembered that this was written by Danielle L Jensen and that was warning enough. Having read her previous books, I know that her writing would make me feel everything. Feel the happiness. Feel the world around you. Feel the betrayal, the pain. Fall in love with the characters and their suffering and suffer with them till the end. And that’s exactly what happened to me while reading Tarnished Empire.

The dynamic between my old love, the Commander, Marcus and the Thirty-Seventh’s Primus, Agrippa was perfect. The broody Marcus and the hilariously witty Agrippa = perfect pairing that I would never get enough of. Add to this the sassiest of all sassy, Agnes. Oh I wasn’t ready for her and you're not either.

This also made me stay up late at night plotting murder, the antagonists would just get under your skin so easily that would make you pray that they die a painful death.

Tarnished Empire was written so well in multiple POVs that differentiates the very distinct personalities of Marcus, Agrippa and Silvara. And that ending? It was perfectly plotted you would think that the genius Commander was the one who plotted it. I loved everything about this world and story and I can’t wait for the release of the next book in the series! Definitely a must read!

strength didn't always come from standing alone

4.5 🌟
Wow, what an amazing prequel! I liked Marcus in Dark Shores but getting to know him better in this book, without Terianna, was amazing. Not to speak of Silvara and Agrippa who are both portrayed as deeply conflicted characters. They're torn about a lot that goes on in this book, as well as Marcus. You can feel that they're torn and Jensen won't let them find an easy way out of their dilemmas.
The story was thrilling, told from three different povs and that without confusing the reader. With what I know now, I feel the desperate need to reread Dark Shores because I will be looking at some things differently. I highly recommend to read this book first when you're thinking about starting this series.

What. A. Story. Oh my goodness.

I liked Dark Shores. I really enjoyed Dark Skies. But Tarnished Empire won me over on a completely different level!!!! This was so damn good. I thought this novella would be the equivalent of what ACOFAS is to the ACOTAR series… a bunch of bonus scenes that wouldn’t entirely hold my attention or something that felt slow moving. I was SO WRONG. This was fast paced. The chapters are the perfect size. We get new characters introduced here. We grow attached so quickly. We get additional insights about characters we already care about from Dark Shores. We have hope for good things to come. We have our hearts stomped on. Repeatedly. Towards the end of the book I could not put this down! Because there is just something magic inside these pages.

This was my favorite book in the series yet. Which is really saying something because I’ve loved them all. First there was Marcus. Then there was Killian!!!! And now?!! AGRIPPA. Gahhhhh! Danielle L. Jensen is SO DAMN GOOD at bringing her characters to life and making them truly unique with their own voice. All her characters are crafted so differently! It’s really something special. Agrippa was such a joy to read. He is charming and hilarious to the point where I was laughing out loud while reading! And man, don’t get me started on Yaro….. 😩

I split time between the audiobook and eyeball reading the physical book for this incredible novella, just for reference. The audiobook was done by Tantor Audio with Will Damron narrating. Will did an excellent job splitting the narration between three different characters (Agrippa, Marcus, and Sylvara) and he really brought a lot of life to the story.

I am so excited to see where Gilded Serpent takes us!

Reread June 2025: JUST AS TRAUMATIC AS THE FIRST READ.

Thank you to the author, Danielle L. Jensen for an eARC!

A MUST READ.

Set in the Dark Shores world, this book about Marcus (and some new characters) is definitely worth the read. It’s especially recommended before Gilded Serpent (book three), but can be read at any time!

I loved this. So much. I love Marcus, and getting more of his background was exactly what I wanted. I didn’t realize how much I would fall in love with the other characters too. AGRIPPA? Yes, please. He is a new addition I didn’t know I needed. He’s snarky and funny (actually laughed out loud a few times). Agrippa keeps you on your toes and has a strong heart full of loyalty and bravery. Oh goodness, y’all need to get to know him too.

This book burns hot and fast, yet doesn’t feel over done. I loved the romance and how it developed. The push and pull, leaving me with many questions. All beautifully written.

I don’t want to spoil much of the story or what happens and more. It’s filled with a lot of fitting information and characters I wouldn’t mind getting even more stories from. I’m even more excited for Gilded Serpent now and can’t wait to dive in.

Overall audience notes:
- Young adult fantasy + romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: kisses / make-outs; one little detailed fade-out love scene
- Violence: battles, swords/arrows, loss of friends/loved ones, starvation

First and for most, I want to thank Danielle L. Jensen & Literary Bound Book Tours for sending me a copy of Tarnished Empire in exchange for an honest review.

I’m going to start off by saying that I truly believe Jensen is one hell of an imaginative writer. The way she intertwines her stories and her characters is admirable.

Speaking of characters, I love the three perspectives in TE. Marcus is obviously my favorite as he is a freaking dreamboat. Marcus is such a strong commander that is torn between doing what’s right for his crew and what he has to do for himself. I also love love love the storyline that Agrippa and Silvara share—such an enjoyable love story soaked with forbidden love. I love Agrippa’s sass and sarcasm. I find Silvara to be such a powerful female with a heart of gold.

Now, I will tell you that by chapter 20, I was invested and I needed to know what was going to happen.

Overall, I enjoyed the time I spent with this story!!

Danielle L Jensen is one of those authors I always wonder HOW she is not more well known?

I love this series and this was no exception, we get introduced to a new member of Marcus' 37 legion and have appearances from our old favourites.

It's a prequel but I would highly advise you to read Dark shores First! Otherwise you just won't understand Marcus.

It is a novella but doesn't read like one (by that I mean the normal fluffy novella where nothing happens except they do some dull hobby/party/dinner etc) this is a complete short story and the ending has got me EVEN MORE excited for Gilded Serpents

N.b I love Agrippa!!!

Update : did a relisten to this book . And same experience. I am now excited again waiting for Scorched Earth !!

ATTENTION ALL ROMAN HISTORY LOVERS!

If you, like me, became enamoured with everything Roman when your grade 5 class talked about the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, then you NEED the Dark Shores series on your bookshelf.

This is a prequel novel that follows Marcus, The Commander of the Thirty-Seventh Legion, a fierce and hardened group of men, raised from childhood to be the fearsome fist of the Empire. We also meet Agrippa, a soldier in Marcus' legion with a snarky tongue and loyal to all ends, and Silvara, a rebel determined to free her father and brother from the Empire's clutches.

This is best read before the upcoming release of Gilded Serpent!

This brilliant novel was fast-paced and exciting from the very beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to get some backstory on Marcus (hey book boyfriend!) and why we see him troubled and riddled with guilt in Dark Shores. Seeing him in such a powerful position made me sympathize with him and the scrutiny he is under. The Empire is ruthless, and the other characters we meet that are high ranking officials overseeing Marcus' leadership made me shiver. Danielle does not sugar-coat the lengths these men will go to to achieve their goals. It is bloody and gory, and while it was unsettling at times, you are able to understand the underbelly of the Empire, and this is necessary for the books that follow. Marcus is a beautifully written and complex character and I look forward to seeing where his story picks up in Gilded Serpent!

Meeting Agrippa was definitely a highlight as well. Who doesn't love a sassy and fit character? Agrippa had me laughing out loud several times, and his kind heart made me swoon. He is loyal to the Thirty-Seventh to the end of his days and that is evident in every inner monologue we get from him. Agrippa is fiercely protective of his friends and that was what made him so relatable. His entanglement with Silvara represents his inner turmoil, torn between duty and following his heart. Agrippa's continuation is guaranteed to be a highlight of mine for Gilded Serpent.

Silvara was an irritatingly wonderful character (does this even make sense?). I loved her confidence and independence but my poor baby Agrippa was caught in the crossfire! I am interested to see where she ends up later in the series...

All in all, this was a great addition to the Dark Shores series. Any extra content I can get (prequels, novellas, etc) always have me even more excited about the story. This novel added complexity to Marcus (a character I had already met and adored in Dark Shores) and introduced us to two new characters that will come into play in Gilded Serpent. It is thrilling seeing Danielle assemble all these game pieces and I am on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what is next!

"When will you Empire boys see that the path they push you down is not the path you must follow? When will you see that there is another option, if only you were willing to fight for it?"

A commander. A Solider. A rebel. Marcus, the Thirty-Seventh's legatus, has a budding reputation: Prodigy of Lescendor, the brightest mind, undefeatable, a strategic genius. He is forced to give Proconsul Plotius Grypus a strategy to conquer Hydrilla and stuck under the control of the older Legatus of the Twenty-Ninth. Marcus longs to liberate his soldiers. But, obey or die. Agrippa is the Thirty-Seventh's primus. Every aspect of his life is governed by legion law. He has a reputation for getting things done that no one else can manage. He is a risk-taker and not one to back down. Silvara joined the rebel forces in order to save her family. She has the chance to save her people. To be a hero to Bardeen but at what cost? Silvara desires to be powerful, dangerous, untouchable. Someone who left her mark. She is deeply and profoundly beautiful. A dangerous weapon. As the battle rages, the trio must weigh and measure risk and reward and determine if they are willing to go for victory. For glory. For the Empire. *hands slam against armored chests in salute*

Oh, ho! I am OBSESSED with this story! Completely and utterly consumed! Danielle L. Jensen writes first-rate characters and her supporting characters are equally fantastic. Agnes, the ancient Bardenese woman. ADORE her true knack for sass. I fell in love with a pretty Empire boy. 🥰 Agrippa. He has a good heart and is genuine. And I need MORE of that lively little cinnamon roll. I was cackling loudly and wildly during several scenes. The last 10 chapters will have you like: someone pass me the waterskin of whiskey.

Tarnished Empire is brimming with FIERCE romance, devoted and loyal friendships, and animosity. Manipulation! Retaliation! Betrayal! Individuals who enjoy tales about the harsh world of ancient Rome will devour this story! Welcome to the Dark Shores, readers . Begin with Tarnished Empire if you're new to the enthralling, cruel, and barbaric realm of Celendor. I cannot wait for the conclusion to Dark Shores! Bring on Gilded Serpent!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you x 100 to Danielle Jensen for an advanced copy! I am infatuated with this world and my ships/OTPs!

With a lot of thanks to Danielle L Jensen whom provided me with an E-Arc edition of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have read the other two books of this series and I loved those. So when their was a posibility of me getting an e-arc for this book I took my change. And it did not dissapoint.

I loved how we got a look inside the world of Marcus before Dark Shores. And I really like it how sassy Danielle can make her characters. Also the amount of politics in this book is really nice.
I can't express my love for this book properly in writing I think.
But the romance, politics and adventure is a very nice combination.

Just read the book, I promise it won't let you down if you liked all her other books!

Tarnished Empire is a YA fantasy romance inspired by ancient Rome ( yep you heard me), featuring flaming romance, epic battles and lots of political intrigue!
Let me quickly explain the situation:

Winter is coming and with it war and bloodshed: a castle surrounded by legions under siege, an icy wind blowing through the legion camp, legionnaires dying one by one, innocent starving people, forbidden love, betrayal, heartbreak, treason, with the theme of camaraderie and loyalty in the center of it all.
Marcus, Silvara and Agrippa see themselves in precarious situations over and over again but what do they choose to overcome their obstacles? What is the right thing to do? What is wrong? Do I follow my heart or my duties?

Even though I have always been #TeamMarcus I gotta admit our handsome Primus Aggripa was such a nice addition to the cast! He’s an idealist and the tattoos plus his flaming romance made him so much more alluring!! Not to mention his humor! He’s hilarious!!
And Marcus’ quote in the end?
“I HAVEN’T DONE ALL THE THINGS I WANT TO DO YET.” —— omg goosebumps! If this isn’t promising enough for the sequel books I don’t know!!!!I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE EVERYTHING HE’LL DO IN THE FUTURE

You can read Tarnished Empire first without fear of spoilers BUT be sure to read it before the third installment of the Dark Shores series which is called Gilded Serpent and comes out April 2021.

I loved this book. It was such a fun yet heartwrenching read. It takes place prior to the events in Dark Shores and focuses on Marcus and Agrippa and introduces new characters, including Silvara with her fellow rebels.

Marcus felt true to character to me, so there was no big surprise there. What was an utter delight to me was Danielle Jensen delved deeper into Agrippa's character and it was a joy to behold. He was snarky and sarcastic, with a deep sense of loyalty and sweetness. I enjoyed learning what led him to ending up in the Dark Shores labeled a deserter and commanding the enemy armies. While I enjoyed his interactions with Silvara, I didn't feel as much of a connection with her. But I do hope to see more of her.

I look forward to the next installment in this incredible series. It has become one of my favorites.

As always, an enemies-to-lovers masterpiece. I don't know why I'm surprised, Danielle L. Jensen never disappoints. As usual in her writing, there's a well written enemies-to-lovers plot line, the male lead pining trope, and great political world building. She excels at writing enemies-to-lovers plot lines that are based around an element of forbidden love for political reasons. The characters are great, the political world building is fascinating, and I am continuously impressed. This book was absolutely incredible, a great addition to the Dark Shores universe. My only complaint, is that being a prequel, I didn't expect such an open ended ending. Hopefully we'll see these characters later in the series.

There's no honor in war. It's your life or theirs. That's the way of it.

First of all, let me write this one out; I didn't like Silvara. It was the same feeling I had with Killian in Dark Skies. I'm sorry. No matter how much suffering she'd been through in this book, I never liked her. Period.

I liked the overall story though; partly entertaining, partly thrilling, and whole lot of action. Good people, bad people, complex people, all mixed in one melting pot. The outcome was good balance, and I enjoyed it a lot.

It looks like this author can't do nothing wrong. Every book or story by this author is better than the one before.

This book is incredibly gripping, action-packed, and dramatic.

It's actually a prequel to the series and I haven't even read the first book, but it doesn't matter because it was so good that it didn't matter if I read the book out of order.

This is more a novella than a prequel, but it is also described as the beginning of Marcus story.
You can read Tarnished Empire before the whole series because it's also a standalone story about Agrippa.
I'm not sure who is the main character in this book, but it's definitely Agrippa's beautiful, forbidden love story ❤️ and indeed the beginning of Marcus story.
Has Agrippa changed Marcus opinion or motivation about life and loyalties? Probably.

I don't know what's going to happen in the series, but I just wanted to say that I love Agrippa.
He's a hilarious character, but also a great friend.
There are actually no friends in the life of a legionnaire, but he considers his comrades as his family.
I hope I'll read about him in the other books in the series.

I just started book #1. Dark Shores seems to be just as good, if not better.

When it comes to fantasy, Danielle L. Jensen is one of the best authors.

I was surprised how easy this read was. I really like Marcus but it wasn't his book. It added to his character but it gave more depth to the whole story. It also made me immediately want to pick up and re-read Gilded Serpent. This tale is vast and so enjoyable i just want to have this deadly adventure with them. Good thing my memory came back before the last page and realized who the fuck is Agrippa. Must be read before Gilded Serpent!

First I would like to say a BIG thank you to Danielle Jensen for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review! Like everything Danielle has written I absolutely LOVED this book!!

Tarnished Empire is a novel that takes place in the world of Dark Shores. I'd suggest reading it after Dark Shores but you can totally read it before too! But you DEFINITELY need to read it before reading Gilded Serpent (book 3). This book provided so much insight into Marcus and those of the 37th!! I loved seeing some of my favorites from Dark Shores and recognizing little fun tid bits here and there. But hands down my favorite part was getting to know Agrippa. He is my new favorite (I mean other than Killian, because #teamkillian for life). His super classy humor had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion but he was so much more than just his jokes. His fierce loyalty to his brothers of the 37th made my heart melt. Danielle you need to stop writing such amazing men because if your men are the standard I hold all men to well...my dating life is seriously screwed.

Anyway...this book was seriously amazing and I HIGHLY recommend it and this whole series!!! Tarnished Empire comes out Jan 26th, 2021 so be sure to get those pre-orders in ASAP!!
