Listening for God: Discovering the Incredible Ways God Speaks to Us

Rate this book
We all long to know the will of God in our lives, to obtain answers to our prayers, and to receive tangible evidence of the personal care of our heavenly Father. We deeply desire to hear His voice. And here’s the good God is not silent. He is constantly reaching out to each of us. Often His voice is quiet and can be heard only in prayer. He frequently breaks into our lives with timely remedies, miraculous encounters, and surprising circumstances that can be explained only by the reality of a loving and caring God. Popular Catholic author and radio host Teresa Tomeo has gathered an inspiring collection of such “Godcidences” from her life, as well as personal stories from a variety of Catholics—including broadcasters Joan Lewis, Al Kresta, Steve Ray, and authors Greg and Julie Alexander—of the unmistakable ways God has spoken to them. In these pages, you’ll read about ordinary and extraordinary “come-to-Jesus moments,” such • The mysterious man who appeared to an anxious couple at a deserted train station in Italy to give them assistance … and then just as quickly disappeared • How a six-word sentence from a husband to his embittered wife served to redirect their marriage from bitterness toward reconciliation and renewal • A business offer that arrived out of the blue, just as financial ruin threatened the future of a wife and husband recently jolted by an Alzheimer’s diagnosis • The unexpected link between a young woman’s moment of despair, as she curled up on the floor of her shower, and the day she kissed the ring of Pope St. John Paul II • How a car accident led to a life-saving ultrasound for an abortion-minded mother • What the Holy Spirit inspired a woman to say in a casual airplane conversation that transformed it into a never-to-be-forgotten encounter These and many more profound and intimate stories will deepen your faith as they remind you of the active presence of God in your life. Each comes with lessons for you to apply to your life and reflections to help you grow in your ability to hear and respond to the still, small, powerful voice of God.

I picked this book up while window shopping at a Catholic store near me. I was in a hard season and looking for something gentle and comforting—something that would help quiet my mind rather than challenge it.

Each chapter stands on its own and tells a separate story, which I didn’t realize when I bought it. It wasn’t what I expected, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise. The structure made it easy to pick up and put down, and I found the overall tone very calm, reflective, and soothing.

This isn’t a book I’d put on a must-read list for Catholic or biblical books, but it is a lovely, peaceful read—especially if you’re going through a difficult time or just want something soft and grounding. If you have the money to spare, I’d say it’s worth picking up for that purpose alone.

Very Catholic-oriented which is not a terrible thing but it was harder to relate to. Interesting compendium of several short narratives of people seeing angels, miracles, loved ones that have passed, with study guide type of questions before and after each chapter. Well annotated. A good summary chapter. Knocking off a star or two due to intense focus on a single faith practice, just my opinion.

This was an interesting book, where each chapter was a different story about a Godincident - or a way that God communicated to the author. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter definitely provided food for thought about one's own experiences, and provided good direction for our parish book club discussions. A very enjoyable read.

Very interesting stories about the way people see God butttt I gave it 3 stars because it was a little silly and I’m also not catholic so it was confusing at times. But if you are catholic I bet this would be great!

Nice stories of people hearing from God. O ly the last chapter gives any practical ideas and they are pretty basic. Again the stories from many different people are lovely.

Impactful stories to remind us of God's intimate presence in our lives. He loves us, cares for us and never leaves our side. Inspiring and hopeful.
