Status-Read up till chapter 33

UPDATE, 01.02.2016 I am still very much a noob when it comes to manga so I am not really in the position to comment on how the artwork/plotline compares to the others, but to my untrained eye, it looked so soft and pretty. As for the story, I think I have watched enough anime to know what's bound to happen. And c'mon it is super clichéd, but I don't think that has ever deterred a reader fangirl. (in fact, we live for that kind of shit)

The plot is nothing close to spectacular; debt ridden 16 year old girl*** starts to work as a housekeeper for a grumpy author boy (who also happens to be ridiculously good-looking - think gangly Kurt Cobain with black hair *__*) and surprise surprise, they fall for each other. Yeah, not much happening here.

Despite my cold bitchy exterior, I have a heart that's as squishy as a marshmallow, and oh, my God just look at this. The way they interact is so cute! >.<

But oh, no! A love triangle looms on the horizon.

Please let it pass. I love Sensei!

I'm so excited to see how the story pans out in the future volumes, this manga is totally adorable.

Also, because I am a pretentious asshole, I am leaving this here. <3

***There's no Lolita-esque monkey business happening here, thank goodness.

Meh. Typical high school aged girl who has to live with an older than her but still on the younger side grumpy, hot guy because she needs to work because her dad can’t adult and owes money to someone. Typical “ba-dum” feelings start on her side and possibly on his. She’s “blackmailed” into being the lackey of a jerky high school boy and grumpy older guy assumes they are an item and she won’t tell him, or ANY one for that matter, that the boy took something of hers that she values and threatened to destroy it if she won’t do his bidding.

It’s also something with a timely value, so not sure how long that threat will work? Shrug, whatever, I don’t care.

2, not impressed maybe I’m burning out on this trope, stars.

Premessa:

Stile: 3/5, not my cup of tea a livello di tratto ma comunque interessante.

The beginning of the Manga is good. The plot isn't much surprising but it's not boring.

I enjoy mangas as long as it's entertaining. This Manga has romance, humor, and cute scenes. I agree it's very cliche but it's just fun and not cringy.

Poor Fumi is, literally, poor and that’s even before she contracts a near-fatal case of Bad Manga Dad Syndrome. With her home taken out from under her, she’s forced to work as housekeeper for Akatsuki, a novelist with a savage glare and harsh tongue and all the other stuff you expect to slowly melt over time.

Now this is more like it. No offence to Mika Yamamori, but I find In The Clear Moonlit Dusk kind of a chore, since it seems fixated on a girl’s desire to be seen as every other girl rather than celebrating how cool she is. This, however, feels adjacent to Daytime Shooting Star in the best sense of the word.

It isn’t up there with that story, which is probably a genre classic for me, but it cribs enough from its predecessor while doing something sort-of new. Fumi is a great character, all business and money, but without letting it drag her down. She’s very easy to spend time with.

Akatsuki hasn’t done much so far, except what’s expected of him. He has to look good, need to be cared for, and make with the tsundere until he thaws out and the sparks start flying. It’s all pretty obvious, but this sort of stuff is completely Yamamori’s wheelhouse and she gets the dynamic just right.

Part of me wonders if this is in direct response to her earlier series, just because it appears to be leaning hard into the potential age gap thing yet again, despite somebody with the weirdest reason to hate Fumi showing up later on to fill out the rival role.

Either way, it’s very easy on the eyes and entertains the brain, so it’s impossible to say that I didn’t enjoy this story. It was a hoot and when the relationships are playing off one another it does a good job. There aren’t many gut-busting laughs, but there’s some strong comedic chops in all this.

Now, it’s not perfect. Our aforementioned rival is a bit of an arse and I don’t enjoy storylines based on coercing people into slavery as a general rule (look, that’s what happens!).

This also leans so hard on tropes that it isn’t funny, between deadbeat dad and the rival and the ‘hot but angry now less angry’ male lead and ye olde panty theft (this looks like it’s about to be a hero moment until it does what we expect of it), which presumably snuck in from an old shonen magazine.

Overall, however, it’s worthwhile because it’s mostly written well. When the story makes a misstep or two it tends to correct itself pretty quickly or go off on some other amusing tangent. I’ve got plenty of rope for this mangaka based on how good Daytime Shooting Star ended up.

3.5 stars - no rounding up because this needs to get itself figured out and I want to see where it’s heading. Still, even if it exists in a typical space, they’ve put up some really nice wallpaper.

Updated Review: 2/10/24: I enjoyed this MUCH more then I did the first time! It was much more engaging and had fun seeing the characters in this story! Though I HATED that one guy who showed up. Dude, get over yourself if you're holding a grudge for THAT long and when you were THAT young. Definitely my least favorite part of this first volume, but everything was good! Looking forward to the next one!

Original Review: 10/28/22: 3.5 stars

I'm not sure why, but I didn't love this story like I thought I would.

There's definitely nothing "bad" about it and I can only think that maybe I wasn't head over heels for the story simply because when I read this I had a horrible headache? I had been waiting for my medicine to kick in and was hoping for a romantic comedy to help alter my focus, but I wouldn't say this is a romantic comedy in the sense I was looking for. It definitely has some fun humor from time to time and definitely enjoyed Fumi and Sensei's conversations because they have a great dynamic that I definitely am interested in seeing more of!

However, my favorite part is *definitely* the writer aspect! That was the number one thing I was most excited about concerning this story (before reading and during reading) and it was awesome! Sensei really captures the quirks of writers and as sort of an ex-fictional writer, I really really appreciated seeing that represented in fiction! I had to laugh when I felt like Fumi was calling out writers everywhere with this though:

description

Bahahahaha! Sooooo true!

Overall, this is a really easy-going story that I think is a great one to read if you're looking for something "warm and cozy." I don't think the story itself is really that, but there is something casually relaxing about it that I would like to come back and give this volume a second chance again. I think it was just sort of a moment/time where I didn't connect as well for some reason, even though it has a lot of the same beats I love in shojo manga.

Yamamori hasn't altered her artwork from Hirunaka no Ryussei. And I am glad she didn't.

I love the clean pencil work and proportioned figures. And the interaction between the characters is so well flowing. And mind it, I read English translations,so it is expected something would get lost in meaning. Yet, the manga hits the right points. It is well balanced and devoid of the troubling fetishes that are common in other Japanese and Korean manga.

For a better review (full of cute scenes from the manga) read Anya's review.

The story-line can be quite similar with sensei's previous works, which is Hirunaka No Ryuusei, but this time I prefer the sensei in this story more than the previous one! I hope he is the main character this time! I love the drawing style a lot, very refreshing and nice to see! I'm looking forward of how the story will go from here! Yeah! 4 stars!

Read to ch.10

Status: On-going...

Genres: Slice of Life, Shoujo, Romance.

The Story: Because of her father's debts a 16 years old girl called Fumi gets chased out of her house and decides to work and live as a housekeeper in a writer's house who happens to be ridiculously good-looking.

My Thoughts -so far: A bit cliche but man, it can be really funny and cute as hell. I'm so team Sensei!!! No love triangle so far and I hope it stays that way.

Art: This is shoujo so it's 'girly' and 'sparkly' (SHUT UP. I LOVE IT!!), but there are also lots of details when needed.

I'm so team Sensei hehe ;)

Okay, I'm hooked! This is interesting! Mika Yamamori really knows how to tug at my heartstrings.

I don't really like age gap stories (especially if the other party is still in the minority crowd) but since the author weaved the story decently, I'll continue reading. This is really nice, sweet, and poetic. I'm a fan of sensei's In the Clear Moonlit Dusk, I adore that book so much, so you can see why I'm still here. And I'm a fan of her art style, just such eye candy for me!! I just remembered this book exists under her name, so I immediately looked for it!

Although, honestly, I already shelved (to read) it last month because it's a Mika Yamamori work, but when I found out that the guy is an adult, I took a step back and read other books. But maybe, the timing is right now, when I finally realize that there are some age-gaps with a nice and clean plot with it. This one's the perfect example, so far.

I'm still torn between giving it a 4.0 or 3.5 because of the age-gap tag. I'll come back.

This is a cute series starter with potential to get better. Fumi is sweet and her unusual passions are amusing. I like her connection with the writer, who at first seems rude, but is in actuality just so wrapped up in his writing, that he sort of has to relearn relationships. There is an annoying side character who I feel may cause a love triangle, which I'm not looking forward to, but I'll stay open-minded.

"I'll protect you. So lean on me".

Charming art, charming leads, promising romance. But for a story so grounded in realism, the 10 year old rivalry about a tot race is kinda extra. But then again, maybe not so much. It's crazy what can stick in one's mind as worth bearing a grudge over.

Update: I am older and wiser than I was and I just cannot under good conscious like this sort of a premise. The thing is, I am the teacher's age now and I would never ever look at a high school boy no matter how mature and think - hey, maybe having a romantic relationship with this tiny human will be a good idea. It will never be a good idea and no amount of context will ever make it okay or acceptable. Its not the end of the world. Its still a beautiful drawn piece of art and while I don't think its an author's responsibility to always have a morally upstanding narrative this is where I would want to draw the line. Children will continue to have crushes on adults, there is hardly anything we can do about it, but as adults its our responsibility to not normalize it. And the easiest way to normalize it is through story-telling. And just ignore my extremely cringe review below, thanks.

-----

it's yamamori mika. So the art work was beautiful. and the writing style is also amazing. the way she draws her characters gives them a lot of depth even without much plot to support them.

I would have given it a four-star. but the plot premise is veryyyy similar to her last book (hirunaka no ryussei: read it. it's awesome.). Older guy, high school girl, one other high school boy who will eventually like her. etc. etc.

the characters are pretty different from her last book though. which I like. I like all of them. and the story is half-funny and half-doki-doki which I also like. (yeah. I love romance.)

unlike most shoujo manga, the MC is not irritating. very endearing and likeable and very cute. This is a trend I am noticing in many recent shoujo manga. the authors are willing to write about strong ladies. Not that I mind weak ladies. You just get bored when every manga has the same old mary-sue character who first gets forcefully kissed by a boy then falls in love with him. Nope. That is not done.

I think I have found a great romance-comedy to follow.

PS: I finally changed my rating to a four-star because lead male is unbelievably hot. I want!! *drool*

This was super sweet and cute, though I have to retract 1 star from my rating for that horrendous boy that popped up in chapter 4. That grudge of him made no sense, no need to turn all violent and mean. :| It just made no sense and I hope he will either get karma after him, or that he will disappear. Hopefully he won't become a love interest. *shivers*

❖ Please ignore my rating, as my ratings are more for me than for you. Thank you! ✌
❖ Whenever I review, I ask myself the same set of questions, based on my personal standards for manga.
❖ I also talk about manga on my BookTube channel.
❖ I make friendships through twitter.
❖ I don’t include content warnings for manga because there will almost always be something harmful included as the medium does not follow reader health guidelines and the cultural norms in Japan are different.

--

❖ ❖ ❖ REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN ❖ ❖ ❖
Are women framed as objects or subjects? Are there female friendships? Is any girl-hate resolved? Are women portrayed as capable? What did I think of the female protagonist or love interest?
The protagonist is believable, relatable, and likable, like all shoujo protags should be. Her personality, interests, skills, and strengths are obvious, and she has a female best friend. I immediately like her and feel for her during her time of crisis. The only thing that's not healthy is that this is an age-gap romance and an employee-boss romance, and that always brings with it some qualms; however, the author has already had the protagonist slap her boss twice and even had her put him in his place verbally once, so the power dynamic isn't the worst it could be.

❖ ❖ ❖ ENTERTAINMENT, PLOT, AND STORY-TELLING ❖ ❖ ❖
How quickly did I feel invested? How quickly am I going to pick up the next volume? Did I laugh? Was I moved to tears? Was the fantasy world-building unique and intriguing? Was the plot thrilling or its progression unique? Did the mangaka utilize or challenge tropes well? Did the characters have believable backstories that are not tragedy porn?
Even though the plot started a little too quickly, I was invested from the first few pages due to the focus on contemporary building and then setting up the slow-burn romance. The premise in and of itself is basic, as are the tropes, but the author takes care not to insult our intelligence, and that's something that's crucial to me when reading contemporary. There is a love triangle, which I'm not wild about, and the other dynamic is hate-to-love I'm sure, but it is interesting.

❖ ❖ ❖ ROMANCE, OTHER CHARACTERS, & OTHER DYNAMICS ❖ ❖ ❖
What did I think of the characters? Are the character dynamics organic? In contemporary, are family and friendship dynamics explored alongside the romance? Did I swoon? Do I ship the couple? Is the love interest kind and supportive of the protagonist?
Like I said, I love the protagonist already. I value the love interest and the way we're learning about him, along with the choices and statements he makes. I can relate to him, which is common for me with male love interests, so that's another plus. I do ship them, but I also wonder if the teenager was included to challenge the age-gap. Right now, the boss is becoming the protagonist's family and I'm worried it's fatherly rather than husbandly, but I have a feeling the author will continue to give power to the protagonist. The love interest is often kind and very supportive of the protagonist. I'm not getting enough of the female best friend, but I'm hoping that will come!

❖ ❖ ❖ ART ❖ ❖ ❖
What did I think of the art?
It's pleasant and another reason it's easy to take this work seriously.

I’ve been looking for a cute comedy romance manga and that’s exactly what this is.

The story follows a high school girl whose dad ends of racking a lot of debt and moving abroad, and she takes a job as a housekeeper in a writers home. She did not expect the writer to be as young as he is, and he intern, did not expect his housekeeper to be as young as she is. As she tries to keep this grumpy writer fed and his house clean, she finds that he’s not as mean and grumpy as he acts. Will she be able to melt his heart?

I had a lot of moments in this manga, where I was smiling and laughing and squealing just a little bit. The first volume really gives you all the feels. Some people may struggle with the age gap (not that it’s really confirmed how big the age gap is) but I honestly don’t notice it too much, nor does it bother me.

I’m really excited to see how this relationship forms and although it has a lot of the cliché moments, it’s still adorable, and I am loving it.

I’m on the fence about this one…it’s giving Fruits Basket-Kamisama Kiss vibes and the art is pretty and the comedy is funny.

BUT why does she have to be 16 while the main guy is some indiscriminate “adult” age (not sure how old yet, but definitely a whole ass adult)….

And that being said….WHY am I okay with Tomoe from Kamisama Kiss being some old ass fox spirit with a high schooler but this one bugs me? Who is the real problem? These stories or the fact that I’m fine with them if the guy has white hair and little fox ears?

I obviously have some self reflecting to do 😂

And truth be told, the main character is so cute and funny that I’m tempted to keep reading this series 🤣😭

One of my fav manga!

I’ve already read it, but it’s being released in English and I just got the first book so decided to reread and review it too!!

Fumi is very responsible and like a mom. Always worrying about her family and taking care of the house. Her dad put them in a terrible predicament and now she has to be a live in housekeeper for a famous novelist.

Akatsuki comes off grumpy and he’s very dedicated to his work. He feels bad after giving Fumi a hard time and starts being a bit nicer to her. Although he has a tough exterior, he’s soft on the inside.
