Pursued by the inhuman Tangata, Lukys flees on foot through the wilderness. He and his companions make for the ocean, a stolen ship their only hope—but even that may prove fleeting. For should they reach the island of Perfugia, a war is brewing between the kingdoms of humanity. Lukys fears he will find only more death on the shores of their homeland. But they have nowhere else left to go.

Meanwhile, the Queen’s Archivist might hold the key to peace. Standing before the City of the Gods, Erika has dreamed of this moment her entire life—so why does she feel such dread? The City is nothing like she imagined, plain stone buildings in place of soaring towers. And the Gods have sworn against interference in the struggles of lesser beings. She must make them see the truth, convince them to abandon their ancient laws, or humanity will fall. And the Tangata will rule, ascendant.

Amazing! The characters are strong and the friendships forged by determination and trust.
Greed and power has corrupted Queen Amina and she is out to destroy everything and everyone who doesn’t submit.
The Old One Maya has taken over the Tangata and corrupted them in pursuit of the power she wants.
Lukys and his small group of recruits and their Tangata mates escape to Perfugia and are met with hatred and betrayal.
The twists and turns are intense. I absolutely love this book and series and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Good Series Start, Miserable Follow

First book in series was interesting and entertaining . Second was OK but after killing off best MC left a huge hole …didn’t leave any characters I was interested inor root for. One MC has character turn around that’s not credible and kinda kills his series.

Way too many subplots . Doesn’t make sense unless you consider author went overboard pushing his enlightened, PC theme, agenda? Ruined good story.

Not r commended

This is such an intricate and amazing series whereby Aaron Hodges manages to weave three strands of the story simultaneously so that on the one hand we follow Lukys and his friends as they try to escape with their Tangata partners from the New Nihelm community, stealing a boat to do this and not knowing where they were travelling to. On the other hand we follow the story of Erika who together with the Goddess known as Cara, in truth an Anahera, and the spy for King Nguyen, Maisie travel to the mountains of the Gods and there face the wrath of the Anahera for what they saw as Cara's betrayal of her people. As well as following the story of Adonis and the Old One, now the matriarch and his mate, who ruthlessly takes the Tangata who did not manage to escape New Nihelm on a track through a snow storm which killed many outright. The Old One was ruthless and powerful and was in search of death and dominance. What all these strands of the story have in common is the many questions that were raised in the minds of all our characters as they encounter a different view of the world than the one they previously held be this regarding their Gods, their prejudice against the Tangata, the magical artefacts so sought after by the archivist, and their idea about the Sovereigns who ruled Perfugia. I was so engrossed in the story from start to finish and cannot wait to get my hands on book 4 of this awesome series where nothing is what it seemed, Hodges plays around with our minds in this tale full of change and challenges!

I felt this novel was full of cascading levels of intrigue with deadly betrayals. I was totally immersed from the beginning. A truly enjoyable and captivating read. I loved it...

The author finds Lukys's deep into battle with the Tangata's, but Lukys finds out something very different about the Tangata's. So much fighting but you learn people believe in you as a leader. Exciting times but what about the Gods and the so called Old Ones? Read and find out what happens to the lives of so many fighting for freedom. Good reading!

Although I liked Lukys' arc, the remaining two POVs were just not that interesting. It was hard for me to even care about them. And the whole Anathera pomp was for nothing. I have a feeling the author had dug himself too deep trying to take the story away from the tropes.

even better than the first two

Great character development, interesting twists to the plot that I didn’t see coming. Some I did but even those were done well. Read it immediately:
