The Rescuer #2

Surrounded by Silence

Rate this book
Lonely billionaire, Samuel Barron, has finally met someone he finds himself falling for, but can he handle a romance for a gentleman whose entire world is surrounded by silence?

After public humiliation, Sam Barron has come to the realization his billions can’t buy him love or happiness. Despondent and feeling like his life is in a downward spiral, he comes to realize he needs some professional help. Despite trepidations, Sam turns to Jason Parker, a social worker who at his heart, is a rescuer. Even though Sam had been so hateful towards him in the past, Jason can’t help but think Sam deserves to suffer. Jason tells Sam straight out, “You’re a spoiled brat without a shred of humility!”

Jason has deep concerns about helping Sam, but might be willing, if Sam volunteers at a soup kitchen. Grudgingly, Sam accepts Jason’s condition, and while performing his volunteer work, meets the flirtatious Noah Wagner. Noah is close in age, attractive, and Sam likes the way he feels whenever he’s around him. Noah is the first person Sam has known who is pro-foundly deaf. So, how is Sam to navigate a romantic interest with a man who can’t hear a word he says?

Surround by Silence, a Contemporary Gay Male Romance, is a sequel to Mr. Huffbind’s debut novel, The Rescuer. However, this book can be read as a stand-alone. If you enjoy a story where the villain becomes the hero, you will love Surrounded by Silence.

Eric Huffbind is a man of many talents. He is a hopeless romantic, licensed registered nurse, has been a travel agent, and the eternal social butterfly. Among his passionate interests are history, genealogy, romance, and travel. Like so many other individuals, he has a long bucket list. On the list, to no surprise, was writing a novel. He pulls from a lifetime of raw emotions: be it love, happiness, sadness, tears, joy, anxiety, fear, disappointment, or achievement.

Although, my stories are love stories between two gay men, regardless of your sexual orientation, my novels are meant to rekindle the true spirit of romance and love in your heart.

Mr. Huffbind was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and has remained in southwest Ohio for his entire life. He shares his life with his husband, an autistic son, and his Pomeranian.

A most enjoyable read. This is a romantic tale of a man's amazing journey to becoming a better man and in the process finding the happiness that has eluded him. It is an extraordinary tale in that it explores the world of a man born deaf but also gay. The characterization is great and the story is full of incident and suspense. Much recommended.

SURROUNDED BY SILENCE is the second book in The Rescuer series and while it does feature some of the characters from the first book, can be read as a standalone because the issues raised are discussed in this book.

Sam has reached rock bottom and has realised that for all his billions, he can't buy happiness. He reaches out to the one person he thinks can help and manages to convince him. That is how Sam ends up working in a Soup Kitchen.

I enjoyed this book so much more than the first (sorry, Mr Huffbind!) The writing style is not as stilted and flowed more naturally. The dialogue was more believable and the "I love you's" weren't bandied around as quickly or as often.

The terror that Sam feels toward the end of the book comes across clearly and was extremely well written. The whole problem with learning ASL was also easy to read. As someone who was learning BSL, I know how daunting it can be but also how rewarding.

All in all, this book was completely enjoyable and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. With no one else to blame but himself, Sam's personal depression has effected not just his personal life but it now it is interfering with his company. Humility is what others say he needs if only the could look past his life altering mistakes. Working in a soup kitchen just may give Sam more then humidity it just may bring him closer to having a real chance of happiness that is if Sam can get Noah to forgive him for a mispoken mistake. Reading about Sam learning to be more human than a spoiled billionaire was interesting, with the way his interactions with Noah and Oliver, brings the readers closer to understand and forgive the reckless acts from his past to present.

Sam's major growth. I found it very unprofessional of Jason to share with his partner, things said in a private counseling session with Sam! HIPPA and integrity!!!??? How perfect was it that the big perfect billionaire would fall for someone deaf and lower income- melting my heart!!! Oliver's parents disgusted me. Such vile selfish creatures hurt me to my soul. I appreciated the lengths Sam went to to free Oliver to be himself, and ALL the reparations he made towards Jason and Chris- MASSIVE!! A real feel good read.

Eric Huffbind's Surrounded by Silence is the second book in The Rescuer series.  This  contemporary MM Romance is a touching, emotional story that delivers hurt/comfort, forgiveness,, brokeness, and personal growth.  The story is wonderfully crafted and the characters make you care for them and their story.  My heart was warm after reading.

I do like a good redemption story, and God knows Samuel needed redeeming. He was totally clueless in the way of social norms, and thought he could buy his way out of everything. He does play quite a big part in the first book in this series, the Rescuers, but I do think that this second one can be read as a standalone.

Jason, the social worker, one of the MCs from the previous book, takes on Samuel and helps him work towards his redemption. It's not plain sailing, Samuel proves a hard nut to crack, however, Noah, his love interest, also helps Samuel to find his way.

The story is a good one, I liked meeting Jason and Christopher once again. There were also some new interesting secondary characters introduced. However, I did find the style of writing somewhat 'stiff' and overly formal in parts, which did pull me out of the story at times. Three and a half stars.

When I first read the blurb, I was smitten. Redemption? A super-rich and powerful former antagonist getting his own story? Another hero who is deaf? Silver fox men—not one but two? Sign me up!

First, I really liked Sam. I never read the first book in the series, so I didn’t go into this knowing his previous nefarious behaviour or personality. I only knew Sam from this novel. He’s rich. He’s out of the closet after being outed through some kind of humiliating media exposé, dumped by his wife who divorced him, and now he’s now full of remorse.

Sam is a billionaire who is lonely. He feels like his life is out of his control, realizing this he talks to Jason, a social worker. Jason calls him a spoiled brat and to volunteer his time at a soup kitchen. There he meets the flirtatious Noah who is deaf. Chris and Jason make recurring appearances in this story also. This was so much better than the authors debut story. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

Interesting story. Sam was absent from his own life. When he finally realized he could do something about his guilt over past deeds, he jumped right in. He didn’t have to work too hard to get over himself once he decided to. It kind of seemed that everything he needed fell into his lap.
Noah was a breath of fresh air. I liked him. It would have been nice to get to know him better. Nick and Oliver are quite the pair. Good kids, it seems.
All in all, it’s a good story about redemption. Good job!

I chose to read and review this book. I like reading this type of genre. This one was well written. I enjoyed meeting the men and seeing how they interact together. I was surprised in this one and how a man who is deaf gay finds his life in this one. It has a lot of suspense mystery drama full of emotions worth reading. I recommend it.

Fabulous book. It’s proof that with effort and a little help anyone can change. Money May buy you objects but it doesn’t buy love, happiness, or a decent soul.

When I started this story I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. It sounded like just another rich billionaire. As I got more into the story there is a lot going on here and I found myself having a hard time putting it down. Yes Sam is another rich guy but thanks to Jason he gets the surprise of his life. On Jason’s advice, Sam’s life changes forever. There are a number of times Sam stumbles and there are times I wanted to smack him. I felt overall the story flowed well and has likable characters. I think there are a couple things I question. I can see Sam being emotional but I think it felt too excessive. I also question if the subject of implants died or was ever addressed between Sam and Noah. Overall I think it’s a solid story that addresses a number of issues.
