Now that I’ve killed Shadow Knight, all the villains of Grayville think that they can have their run of the city. And they are all led by the Maniac. But what these idiots don’t realize is that hunting villains is my favorite pastime, and now that the Shadow Knight is dead, it’s open season. Time to bag some trophies.
This part 5 drags on the series, with a predictable showdown with the Maniac. (Who was conspicuously absent in the body of part 4). Clearly the author wanted to save the Maniac (and also Optimo) for their own predictable parts of the series, and is dragging out story material into thinner and thinner slices with a lot of filler added. The premise initially seems to be a kind of horror story where the maniac would capture and manhandle all of the MC's many superhero girlfriends. I hope I'm not spoiling anything when I say that the actual story turns out to be considerably less exciting, instead very predictable in a story that is disappointingly shallow. Also, some of the science here is crazy. Heroes without superpowers jumping out of a plane to land on the deck of a boat (without a parachute!)? Check. Stepping out of the way of a bullet after it has been fired? Check. Not sure if this is just really lazy writing or an AI producing typical AI nonsense? Still, a few points for the effort of creating a memorable supervillain nemesis. Pretty sure I'm stopping here, instead of having to listen to part 6 as well, where undoubtedly the superhero Optimo will be made out to be a villain in some contrived unlikely way and then dispatched with too much ease.
There's only one reason I gave this a four, I'll get to it shortly.... the writing style (as usual) was excellent. Mr. Jacobs' flow is right up my alley, the perfect amount of meat and potatoes. The narrative moves the plot without sacrificing quality for repetitive, pointless, drivel. If you like the series, it's a 5. SPOILER ALERT. Consider yourself warned 😉.
Don't say I didn't warn you.......
The Maniac's POV in previous books was fantastic foreshadowing. Simply put (and to get Logan to possibly read it) I gave this a four because there was not enough of a "flesh out" for the Maniac. I was looking for Beacon to be the mastermind/ low key Maniac in some crazy twist, or for him to be a long lost relative of the Crow. I enjoyed the absolute shit out of the book, i just feel like there was a lot of opportunity lost with the character. How did he snap? Why did the crow work so hard to hide him? I'm hoping there is something else coming, either a super twist where he's not dead, or some sort of exposition on him. Past that one tiny personal issue, this book is a solid 5!
I gave Logan a 5 star rating because this series appeals to my sense of justice. I am sick to death of our criminal justice system letting career criminals get away with murder and the protagonist and friends feel the same way. Way to go bud, keep stacking the bad guys up like cordwood. If you feel the same way give this series a try I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Tony Stark meets Lex Luthor indeed. This series has always been an attention grabber from the first book, and this latest addition is no different. Loved seeing the teammates develop and grow, coming to trust Miles and their powers more, gaining confidence and kicking butt. Especially loved the character development for Aileen.
Really digging this series and I really really can’t wait till Norma hits full stride in her powers. I really hope she can dial her powers in more like the average strength of a strength based super hero. It was alluded to with the average marksman piece and average fighter pilot. Those are different than just average pilots.
If you like superheros, and you are all sorts of frothy in all sorts of ways about the show The Boys, this is the series for you! It is incredible and really unlike anything else you might pick up in a related genre, its honestly even better than The Boys!
Evil Genius finally goes after the Maniac. The fight sequence and analyzing of the opponents was amazing. If you haven't gotten into this series yet, then get into it. I can't wait to see how he takes down Optimo.
This has become one of my favourites from Logan and it keeps getting better, the characters are heading in the right direction and the story has so many possibilities. Love it
The whole book was like a rollercoaster ride and man when it was finished i was left equally satisfied and eager. I can not wait for the next book in this series and I'll probably be checking Amazon everyday till it comes out.
This author has easily become one of my favorites in this genre. The characters and worlds he creates are truly amazing. I'm anxiously looking forward to the next book and seeing how he develops the MC and his group. Keep up the good work Mr Jacobs!
The author definitely turns the genre around and makes for a very entertaining read of how reality would interact in a world with superpowers. Very entertaining.
It is weird that this is the only series of Logan's I like. Maybe it does everything with superheroes that I have always wanted. They should be able to kill supervillains no questions asked. Can't wait for next book
Still tickles me to pieces when I read these stories. A little bit harem action is beginning to take over. I'm not too big on that. I'm more of an action packed fiction reader. Still a decent read. On to book 6!
Miles is coming into his own as the Evil Genius. The Maniac and his plan is finally defeated. Great series with well written dialogue, fun characters and excellent action both adult and regular. I think you will enjoy the books!
