Swoon-worthy

Dr. Shaun Patterson, accomplished neurosurgeon, altruistic, caring, currently works for Doctors without Borders in the Ukraine. She speaks two sign languages. Jozef Koba is second in command and enforcer of one of the premier crime families in eastern Europe. Jozef notices Shaun, is intrigued by her, and decides to abduct her for a job because of her unique skill as a doctor and non-verbal communicator.

Sin of Silence teaser

An unlikely pair -- someone who protects life and someone who takes it -- yet the story of this uncharacteristic couple yielded all the feels, all the romance reminiscent of fated lovers of great romance novels of yore.

When this love story unfolded within the dark mafia backdrop, I was struck by how much emotion it evoked. Overtures of old-world, almost gothic romance throughout, there were moments where I felt I was reading a modern and gritty, fairytale retelling with a dark prince charming. The characters were so well-developed as to live in their feelings and their personalities, to like them, the good and the bad ones. Jozek was perfectly ruthless, yet unmistakably charming and loving to the woman he claimed, a growly mobster who knew his way around a gun as well as a woman. His only weakness was the doctor for whom he displayed sweetness and romantic gestures but could also devolve into searing jealousy and protectiveness. I loved the dichotomy of his character and how it was expressed in the book, as well as how Shaun came to unwittingly develop feelings for this antihero. Shaun's character showed excellent range, at times strong, confidently fighting back, as well as poignantly vulnerable, sweet, and generous. I loved that they were an interracial couple where that difference was not really noted between them -- they were just two people who were developing feelings for each other. Rather that difference was subtly celebrated in peppered praise of the color of her skin, the beauty of her features, her hair. They were simply an enviable couple. Side characters -- family, friends, and enemies contributed integrally to the adventure of the story as well as shaping the main characters' storyline.

This story was a medium burn, allowing the chemistry to build between the main characters and enjoyment of various mafia plot lines. Interactions between the main couple were steamy, given to lusty gazes, and their love scenes were fire and commandeering. There was no denying their attraction for each other. The story was written in the third person point of view, not my preference as it created a certain disconnectedness to the characters, but even so was well-written, still sparking the emotions. By the end, I was a champion to this couple's love.

The cliffhanger ending is marked upon my heart for life and stirred my emotions like no other. If a real life Jozef existed, I would have him as my hero. Excellent read.

This is an excellent book written and destined for greatness.

I haven't seen such high-quality writing for a long time. The story touched my heart and swept me away with emotion. Reading such a story is beyond words.

Among the best characters I have ever read, I would have to say that Jozef and Shaun were two of my favorites. My heart warmed when reading about them and I loved getting lost in their world. The way they met and the way they found their way in their new norm just grabbed my attention. The interaction between the two of them when they were in the same room was always rich, steamy, and interesting.

Jozef’s presence alone commanded respect, despite the fact that he couldn't speak. Throughout every scene, the author added his wordless language that was actually relevant, adding a layer of sophistication to the text that meant that readers could actually understand him without him moving his lips.

When he grunts or growls or does his sign language, I feel a slight surge of excitement rush through me.

A phenomenal amount of word-building and character development was also displayed in this novel. Throughout the story, Jozef power and its importance are slowly introduced to the readers. Although he undermines Shaun's position as a doctor, over time he comes to trust her, and although it seems like a sudden change, it doesn't happen overnight, especially after the growing tension between them turns into more.

Book contains several unexpected twists and turns, as well as major plot elements that are hinted at towards the beginning and are revealed in a surprising manner near the end.

What I like about this story is how Shaun's inner and outer thoughts contradict each other. Her overconfidence and impassiveness are all a façade when she is panicking, but on the inside, she is terrified. I thought that was fantastic because it managed to pull at readers' heartstrings with a real sense of vulnerability, and it also highlighted how scared she was when she realized how dangerous Josef really was.

Research has been done by the author, and that has evidently shown. She entrapped the audience with a story that was impossible to duplicate.

How did she achieve such interesting, intriguing, and compatible characters despite the complexity of the stories?

It is immeasurable how clever this author is, and her mind is a mystery to me. Simply mind-blowing. It was absolutely amazing. The characters in Nikita Slater's books are vividly brought to life. Although I did not foresee what was going to happen next, I did not feel betrayed by the author's decisions because Ms. Slater very skillfully constructed the story and every surprise contributed to the overall effect.

This book is worth getting, and I can't wait to read the follow-up. This will be a thoroughly enjoyable and fulfilling experience for me. There are not many books quite like this and I doubt I'll read anything else as fascinating as this one.

This was a new to me author and one I'll definitely be reading more from.
What a fantastic way to start a trilogy.
For the first half of the book I struggled with both characters and plot, yo-yoing between loving and being frustrated, especially when some things didn't completely add up.
All I can suggest is to stick with it, some things will click into place, and then of course there's that ending...
Look forward to seeing what happens next.

These characters made a mark in my soul. I've read several of this author's books and she has yet to fail me in delivering characters that I will not like. She perfectly portrays, in my opinion, person of colors amazingly and with care. This author is my champion when it comes to writing dark underground romances because she can truly captivate me with her characters' dynamics and complexities.

Josef and Shauna are polar opposite and yet they make a perfect pair. The emotions were captured in a precise definition - the push and pull, the struggles, and the torment. The story build up was thrilling, to say the least. I've read this author multiple times and I must say that there's a reason as why and it is shown in this book. She simply let her characters shine by being perfectly flawed and human in my eyes.

As for the ending, the next book is not that far to release and as always, this author knew how to end her books with your mouth hanging.

The author is clearly talented and the book has potential but I couldn't get into it and I don't see myself reading other two books about this same couple. The backstory of H's uncle and aunt is more interesting than the MC's own story: arranged marriage between enemies who hated each others but then fall in love after years of hate and forced proximity? Give it to me, ASAP. I don't like the built-up and don't feel the chemestry between the MC. It's all telling and no showing. An example? Their first kiss is basically off-page. WHY?!
Also I hate when insta-connection are written as slow burn when clearly they aren't. It's only boring, frustrating and we don't even get hot smut.
I find the heroine annoying. What's the point in writing this strong/confident/independent super woman if she acts TSTL the moment she met the H just because he has bulging muscles? *eye roll*
H is interesting but too soft for my taste considering this is supposed to be a captive/captor romance.

The couple: Jozef and Shaun

Romance trope: mafia
Series: Sinner's Empire
Length: 364 pages

Plot: Shaun is a doctor working in Ukraine with Doctors Without Borders. One day, mafia enforcer Jozef sees her communicating in sign language with a young boy and decides to kidnap her to help a prisoner of his. Jozef can hear but cannot speak and so uses sign language, and Shaun will be helpful. If he has to kill her afterward to preserve anonymity, that's just the way it goes sometimes. But for the first time ever, he can't bring himself to kill someone, so he takes her with him. His solution? They'll marry. If they don't. he's afraid his uncle won't accept his decision to keep her alive. ButShaun has no intention of going along with his plan quietly, and there are outside forces working against them.

Commentary: Absolutely lovely! The writing was clean and the story progressed at a good pace. Shaun was simultaneously strong and vulnerable. Sometimes I think she cried too much (at everything, really), but honestly, if I were in her situation, I would cry all the time too. Jozef was violent, bordering on unhinged, as though nobody had ever questioned his rough handling before. He did like to fling Shaun around and didn't seem to know his own strength sometimes. That made for some really tense moments (for me, at least - I kept waiting for him to really hurt her and then have to live with the consequences). But some of the most quietly heartbreaking moments were when Jozef admitted to himself that he felt guilt about taking Shaun away from her life and her choices - but not enough to let her go. But by the end, we see a true love blossoming between these two lost souls, right at the moment that danger strikes!

Next book in the series: A Silent Reckoning

This are my thoughts in the whole series and not just book 1

Book 1 - ⭐⭐⭐
Book 2 - ⭐⭐
Book 3 - ⭐

Proceed with caution as this very long review (aka rant) will be full of spoilers

BOOK 1
At the start things were looking up. She's a woman of colour, a neurosurgeon, top in her field, and in the first few pages seemed like she would be very badass in fighting for her freedom. But things took a very quick turn for the worst. I had to suspend my logic in a lot of places.
For example:
1. The man is standing over you pointing a gun at you with the clear intention of murdering you and you are admiring his fingers.... Girl... What??? How?? Why??
2. Exactly how do you sense a man's desire for you while looking down the barrel of a gun? The gun that he is pointing at you??
3. What is a neurosurgeon doing operating on a heart? Chile, I don't care how smart you are or how many years you spent in medical school. If your specialty is in brain surgery and not heart surgery, please step away from me
4. This woman cannot read the room. The sheer amount of times that this woman brought in the hippocratic oath anytime the mention of Jozef killing someone came up... Dear God🙄. You've been kidnapped by the mafia. What do you expect them to do? Babysit??

BOOK 2
You'd think that the author would do something different with this one but the we just got the same storyline that was in book 1 dropped in book 2.

Jozef's been in prison for a year now and Shaun's back in Canada being depressed and shit. She says she doesn't have Stockholm Syndrome but.... *insert side-eye here* Yeah right
Anyway once our resident stalker bribes his way out of two life sentences or some shit like that, he quickly hops on a plane, goes to Canada, and proceeds to kidnap her again.

The author really tried to make Shaun seem like an independent woman but it all fell flat. She keeps saying that she wants to go back to work but gives up the minute he says no. Like why would you keep telling us how brilliant of a surgeon you are, how you crave freedom and then proceed to not fight for that??

Did I also mention that she stops in the middle of a bloody shootout to cry because she has broken her oath as a doctor because she just shot someone??? A SOMEONE WHO WAS F**KING SHOOTING AT HER?!?!?!.

This so called brilliant woman keeps telling us how she's worked with Doctors without Borders before in war-torn areas but it somehow NEVER occurred to her that she needs to learn how to protect herself. She cannot shoot a gun and has never taken any kind of self-defense class 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️. She just waits for people to save her then cries about how they've killed and she shouldn't kill because she's a doctor. LORD JESUS HELP ME WITH THIS ONE

BOOK 3
You thought things would get better? They didn't. Nothing happens in this book.

She never learns how to protect herself, always complains about having bodyguards (clearly forgetting that she's in the mafia), refuses to marry the man even as she still wears his mother's ring, does not care to use birth control even as she keeps saying she doesn't want kids (she's a whole doctor!!! Oh and she also states that she doesn't want to use it because she doesn't think that HE would want to use it - Are we in the 21st Century or am I hallucinating??) and somehow solves some complicated brain tumor thing because let's not forget, she is a brilliant surgeon.

Basically in book 3, Shaun continued to be a judgmental idiot and a doormat, and most of the book was used as a set up of the two upcoming series which I believe will center around Leeza and Saskia

I’m a huge fan of the author. I must say she did it again. She wrote an amazing, complicated tale. I never heard of a scenario like this one. Jozef was the silent, broody anti hero of my dreams. He’s so wrong he’s right. The good doctor is everything. She’s a fighter, a do gooder and smart. I couldn’t put this book down. I read it in one sitting. This story is full of intrigue, betrayal and suspense. I sweat bullets, got tearful, and laughed. This book had all the feels. It also was crazy hot! I am a member of the quickcocks group if you know what I mean. ;-) I couldn’t wait for this story to heat up. It met ALL my expectations. I was really impressed with the author, she really did her homework. The scenes seemed so real. The action was so realistic. The medical stuff was correct. I hate cliffhangers but I’ll forgive this. I already preordered book 2. February’s a long time away. I’ll be waiting. I highly recommend.

Sin of Silence is the sharply written, sexy and intriguing first book in what looks to be a fantastic series by Nikita Slater. This story was jam packed with angst, suspense and steam, with captivating characters and a great plot.

This author is so good at creating multi-faceted characters that completely pull you in. I loved both Shaun and Jozef and their unique character traits. The tension between them and their intense interactions made for some fabulous scenes. I loved how Jozef slowly softened when it came to Shaun, yet didn't lose the strength and ruthlessness that made him who he was. Shaun was a fabulous heroine as well, a great combination of soft and strong. I really enjoyed their chemistry and the way it builds as the story progresses. I am looking forward to seeing how their feelings for each other will fare with all the turmoil surrounding them in the coming books.

There was never a boring moment in this story. I loved the way the plot flowed, and the pacing of the intimacy between Shaun and Jozef was perfect as well. The ending was an intense one that has me itching to get to the next book. I am really looking forward to the rest of this series.

Nikita Slater has totally mind blown me this time. I have been reading her books for over a year and she still manages to amaze me. Sin of Silence was not at all what I thought it would be. This book totally screwed with my mind and left me hanging on the edge of my seat page after page. The hostility relationship between Josef and Shaun was amazing and the chemistry you see build as the story moves is indescribable. A very unlikely companionship forms for the both of them leaving them needing each other for two very different reasons. This book does end on a cliff hanger but it is worth it. Nikita builds and builds on this story leaving your imagination to run wild while keeping you tied up in knots waiting for the next shoe to drop. This book has everything one needs in a great book. A rough and tough alpha, a no nonsense, independent woman, and a dysfunctional relationship that grows into something more. I cannot wait to see where Nikita takes this series! If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I definitely would!!

This was one of my favorite books this year!
Nikita done it again, a 5+*!!!
I love the badass that Shaun was! brave, strong.
I adore Jozef! A j/p H!
The author know how to made me love Jozef even if he was such a hard man.
The cliffhanger was to die for... I can't wait for more... February can't come soon enough!!!!
The writing is perfect and couldn't put it down, read it in one sitting.
What I love the most was that Jozef was a non-verbal person, and that is very hard to find!
Congratulations Nikita 💞

An Enforcer for his family, Jozef is on a mission and kidnaps Shaun not just because she is a doctor in a foreign country, but because she knows sign language and can communicate with the nonverbal Jozef. There are several times in their first interactions where Jozef terrorizes and is seconds away from killing her, as is his plan….but something prevents him from going through with it; a connection that snaps into place between the two. He then decides that the only way he can protect her is to keep and marry her. Shaun is then plunged into Jozef’s dark and confusing world.

I loved the characters in this story. Shaun is the epitome of a strong, smart, likable heroine. She displays her spine and spirit in her dealings with Jozef’s family, who are simultaneously brutal and welcoming. Jozef’s aunt was probably one of my favorite characters and I need more of her. Jozef is a complicated, dark anti-hero who has such a deep seated vulnerability that it was hard not to want to hug him. Yeah, hug the assassin. I can’t blame Shaun for her attraction to her would be killer. The chemistry between Jozef and Shaun is inexplicable, but undeniable.

The first in a series, the book ends on a cliffhanger that had me wanting to demand the next book NOW, but you won't be disappointed if you start reading this before the next one comes out. Fast paced, action filled with lots of steam and really interesting characters.

Sin of Silence is a complex and well written story that grabbed me from page one.
Jozef is a complicated character to write and Nikita did it flawlessly and with great care. Shaun was shown to be struggling with her role in the Koba family as she she waffles back and forth between acceptance and denial.
This story was written with such detail and passion that it felt very real.
But that ending, Nikita I need to know what happened!

Got as far as chapter 17.

Okay. So homegirl has been kidnapped, but she is still thinking with her hind brain. All about Jozef's bulking muscles. And everybody has warned her, family or death and she keeps reiterating how she's this top surgeon, but so far only 1 legit escape attempt.

Like there was no actual chemistry between the two of them. It was just looks, the most mundane of human touches and of course, his bulky muscles because homegirl is almost 6ft and is a thin girl, but where her body fails to fascinate him, her ability to know how to communicate in sign language and her rare spunk suffice to carry his interest. Miss me with that bullshit.

I hate to be the bad guy, but a black chic in Czech (or was it Ukraine?) and up until chapter 17, not 1 person has said a racist thing towards her/ acted like the way people act when they have never met black people ever. And mark you, we initially meet her in a war zone, then she spends most of her time up until where I reached, in the countryside. It was too "idyllic" in setting.

In short. DNF.

Loved the H. He’s j/p and protective. Less enamored of the h. I never care for the older experienced over achievers. She keeps insisting her mafia captors address her as “Dr. So and So”, which I found super eyerolly. Also, she tells the H that she did the whole football team in college. 👀🥴🤢

Good story... not sure why this series is 3 books, but I will continue reading. I did quite a bit of skimming because there’s lots of mafia business that I don’t care about. I’m here for the romance. 🤷🏼‍♀️😅

No one writes a mafia anti-hero like Nikita Slater and once again, she’s nailed the brief. Sin of Silence kicks off a brand new series for this author and it didn’t disappoint. Travelling in her familiar stomping ground by giving readers an alpha anti-hero that’s bad, dangerous and oozing sex appeal, she’s put a slightly different spin throughout this story by having Jozef, the male lead, non-verbal and needing to sign to communicate. I loved this addition as it gave the story a different, fresh perspective using this trope.

Shaun (the heroine – the name threw me for a moment, too) is a neurosurgeon working for Doctors Without Borders near the front line during the fighting in Ukraine. After seeing her use sign language, she’s kidnapped by gunpoint by Jozef, the second in command and Enforcer for the Czech Koba crime family, for the dual purpose of helping a prisoner of his recover enough for him to resume questioning whilst also having the capability to communicate with him through sign. Knowing he should put a bullet in her when her services are no longer required, Jozef can’t bring himself to end her life as he’s drawn to the doctor and the connection they have. Instead, he makes the radical decision to keep her for himself, doing the only thing he can to keep her safe from the family…marry her.

This book was a great read and had a few of my favourite tropes: mafia, a forced marriage, a bit of suspense, a good splash of build-up and steam in the relationship, an intelligent female lead and a tattooed mafia king pin. The two main characters were complete opposites but it really worked here as they had an inexplicable connection. I loved that Jozef was non-verbal and he and Shaun signed to each other. It was sweet and added an extra layer to his character as he finally found someone who got him. If you’re familiar with any type of sign, the author doesn’t following sign grammar when Shaun and Jozef communicate and she put in a disclaimer about this at the start of the book. I thought this was great as it took into account that this doesn’t follow authentic sign grammar (which is an important part of sign culture) while explaining why and keeping the integrity of the theme solid.

A minor plot point is that there’s a possible rat in the organisation. There’s also Shaun being overwhelmed by her new life as a mafia wife, her being accepted into Jozef’s family and, of course, the fact she was publically kidnapped. Being black, Canadian, educated and a rule follower, Shaun finds acclimating to her new life difficult. She did make a couple of questionable choices that I found strange considering how educated and worldly she is but it didn’t drag the story line down. There were some great secondary characters throughout the book as well and I hope these continue to pop up in the next instalment in this series. I found a couple of parts a little bit repetitive, especially Shaun saying she had been kidnapped and was now the soon-to-be wife of a dangerous mobster who she was attracted to. There’s the usual ‘he’s a bit of a monster but I turn to goo whenever he’s near me’ business but it didn’t bother me as the story line held up on its own. There was also a tiny bit of other woman drama if that floats your boat.

As for the two main characters, I really liked them, especially Jozef. He was dominant, jealous and possessive and the author did a great job of showing his softer (dare I say sweet?) side when he was with Shaun. As for the latter, I loved that she was intelligent and independent. I saw another review say that she found it arrogant that Shaun introduced herself as a doctor. Each to their own, but this was actually a highlight of the book for me. I thought it was fantastic that she owned and was proud of her title – why should any woman talk her achievements down because it makes others feel uncomfortable, jealous or aware of their own shortcomings? What, is this the 1950s and women can’t be proud or successful? Sheesh. Studying for years earns you the right to use ‘Doctor’. That’s not arrogance and Shaun rocked it. Yes, I’m aware this is fiction and no, I’m not a doctor lol. Also, just a bit of a warning for some readers – there is physical assault towards women in the book. It’s only brief but it’s there, along with Shaun’s kidnapping.

I won’t spoil anything here, but I didn’t guess the ending at all and thought it was great. It had a bit of a twist and while it is a cliffhanger, this is not a novella or one of those books where the author splits one story into three books to drag it out when it could have just been one book. This is a pet peeve of mine and believe me, I’d be calling it out if this happened here, but the book was a decent length with plenty going on. Obviously be warned, though, that it is a trilogy.

Overall, this was a really entertaining read. I always know what I’m getting from this author and she’s hit all the right spots for me in this book, too. The captor/captive vibe combined with the somewhat arranged marriage reeled me right in. I’m really looking forward to the next in the series.

I was given the opportunity to read Sin of Silence in advance of release. This is an extraordinary book for both the depth of the main characters and the themes. It's a long review, so buckle up. I don't think there are spoilers.

Let's start with the characters.

The H and h were real people struggling to reconcile themselves to each other. I loved them both so much.

I think Ms Slater wrote an amazingly complex female character. Shaun's personality traits were attuned with those of a physician and neurosurgeon. Shaun is stong but kind, and naive but intelligent. Her naivete comes from her unwavering moral compass and her choice to believe there is goodness in all of us (despite the evil in many). She lives in a bubble of her own making until Jozef takes her.

It's difficult for Shaun to transcend her core beliefs when faced with a criminal life that is being forced upon her. Despite it being romantic fiction, it's a real representation of what we all face at some point in our lives, either because we're in situations foisted upon us or of our making. Shaun's inner dialogue represents the conflict between her growing feelings for Jozef, her needs and desires as a woman, and her core beliefs. Yep, we've been there (though hopefully not in a kidnappy way), and aren't we all hot messes as a result?

Her insistence at being called Dr. is a wall she's built around herself to protect herself from a racist, sexist world (given that she's female and black). How will she get respect if she doesn't demand it? In her profession, respect could be the difference between life and death. It's a way of maintaining a modicum of control when the rest of her life is out of control. This is a woman who is proud of her accomplishments and it's nice to see a character in a romance novel that isn't full of self-doubt and stands up to the H with a mature, thoughtful approach (until those cursed hormones kick-in).

Bravo to Nikita Slater for admirably managing the delicate balance between specialist doctor and woman. Shaun is 34, which is about the time most neurosurgeons finish their residency. The Doctor may have been a little ahead of the curve, but that's why we have a curve in the first place - because of the outliers.

Now, on to Jozef. Oh my god!!! My favourite Nikita Slater H used to be Mack, but sorry Mack, there's a new guy in my life. I loved Jozef - what a wonderful, perfectly complex character. Ms Slater challenged herself by having to identify with the H through his thoughts and emotions. It made him multi-dimensional in a way I've not seen before in Nikita's books (don't get me wrong - her other Hs make my heart pitter-patter unnaturally, but Jozef is my new official book boyfriend).

His depth of feelings for Shaun starts to rule his life, which makes him question his loyalty to his family. He has his own set of core beliefs and they align with Shaun's, though the two don't see it (as a reader, you have to look beyond the dialogue to where the overlap is).

Do they both value life? Yes, but core beliefs are complicated. Most of us value life, but what does that really mean? For Jozef, it's protection and loyalty to his family. It's all he knows. For Shaun, it's a broader value. They both value family - Jozef's is obvious. He'd kill for them. Would Shaun? Probably. She loves her mother, misses her. Mom has been a huge positive influence in Shaun's life so why wouldn't Shaun want to reach out to her. The idea of a mother not knowing what's become of her daughter is heart-breaking.

Sin of Silence deserves 5-stars because of the amazing characters, the engaging plot, and the fact that there's going to be more Jozef and Shaun in my future. Yep, it's a cliffhanger, folks and I'm not usually a fan of them because the characters have to be amazing for me to want more of the same. In Sin of Silence, the characters are that amazing and there's so much potential for growth and change. I can't wait.

The family's feral dog is in love

Jozef Koba was raised in a mafia family to be the guard dog enforcer of the Koba family from an early age and he did his job well. When he needed help to find and rescue his uncle, he knew that Dr. Shaun Patterson was the ideal person. He'd been watching her and knew they spoke the same language. He was intrigued by her exotic beauty, her intelligence, and the kindness that she showed to others. He needed her goodness and kindness in his life. He did not hesitate to take a life and Shaun did not hesitate to save a life. They were extreme opposites. When it came to eliminating Shaun because of what she witnessed, Josef could not do it. He refused to kill an innocent, a doctor whose talents were so needed, a beautiful woman inside and out. Jozef knew the only way he could keep her and so his plan was hatched. In the process, he fell hopelessly in love with the good doctor and vowed to destroy the world if anyone harmed her including his family.

Shaun was in a state of shock with what was happening to her life. All she could think about was getting away from the enforcer and his family. She was a doctor and no way could she adapt to the mafioso lifestyle. She too was falling for the enforcer and wondered if she was suffering from Stockholm syndrome. She could not explain her feelings for Jozef. They were drawn to each other and the sex was so satisfying to both of them. Josef showed Shaun a side of his personality that no one else ever saw. He was learning how to be tender and loving. But there were some that did not like their relationship. When the good doctor was poisoned, Jozef took the fall. It was an inside job, Jozef vowed to take care of whoever was responsible.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a well-plotted head rocking drama. It's a good thing I waited to read this series after I bought all of the books or I would have been P.O.'d because I hate cliffhangers. I can't wait to read the next book. Hopefully, we will find out who poisoned the good doctor and how Jozef will handle his arrest.

“She was his. Period. No questions, no negotiation, no escape.”

This book has several things going for it. You have the obvious mafia-brooding alpha, intelligent-strong willed female that catches his eye, resistance, chemistry and then the connection that even when brutal may be intimate.

"Ability. Your cousin has a different ability, not a disability. The way he communicates, it’s unique and special. It's not a disability, but something to celebrate."

Just when you are rooting for her to get her way he messes with your mind and you start shifting your agenda. I love that they have something unique to them and not just the alpha being strong willed to get his way. It adds a whole new dimension to this masterpiece.

“She wanted to hate him, but she couldn't. Every moment she spent with him sucked her in more. Yet every moment she spent with him, she learned something new and terrible about him.”

Loyalty.Pride,Family.Jealousy.Control.Regret.Obsession.Passion.Power.Mystery.Posession.Code.
Revenge.

“One day you will find your normal again. It might seem difficult now, but you are resilient.”

This book has several messages about overcoming diversity, disabilities (or abilities), and opportunities...especially during this time~as we are living in a pandemic...I think we can all use a little encouragement even if it comes from a brooding, stubborn alpha.

“If someone on the inside had betrayed him, then he would take down the house of cards himself one card at a time until their entire legacy was dismantled.”

To be continued…

This book will have you on the edge of your seat and dreading when you flip the last page. Thankfully there is more of this power couple right around the corner. I’ll be waiting...not patiently...but waiting for A Silent Reckoning (Sinner’s Empire Book 2). Available February 2021!

She did it again! This lady sure knows how to get you caught up in her mafia stories! In all of her stories! This one was no different!

I loved the juxtaposition of a healer and an enforcer falling in love. One person who is sworn to do no harm the latter person sworn to do just that. How can these two very different people find love in the midst of such madness. A white knight (of the lady variety) seemingly ill fated lovers connect so beautifully in this story. Their chemistry and fire fairly leaps off of the pages and warms you and sears your soul with such an epic tale. I was so lost in these polar opposite characters and you could feel their heated gazes.

There is so much going on but I don't like to give it all away so I rather tell you how the book made me feel than what it is about. It was wonderfully written with skill and intelligence and well developed characters that you rooted for and respected even if they didn't always do what is right.

The heroine Shaun was so well described that even though you could hear her inner thoughts as one might in 1st POV you don't feel as if you miss out on what she was feeling. The same can be said for the alpha antihero Josef. You can feel how attracted he was to Shaun and how much he wanted to protect her. His feelings for her were quite fierce and wonderous to behold.

This whole story is quite swoony and it has a cliffhanger that isn't hard to get past. In my opinion it only adds to the heady anticipation of the second edition of Sin.

****TOP 5 Reads of 2020***

This worked for me on every level. The complex and page turner plot, the character building, the dark factor, the secondary characters, and basically I could go on.

It’s no surprise by now I’m a huge Nikita slayer fan and will always one click everything and all the things she releases.
This may be my all time favorite releases by her, yet.

There was originality for me and I loved it.
The heroine a kick ass brilliant doctor and the Antihero who stole my attention and heart without muttering a single word...

Nikita Slater has created an amazingly good dark romance, with incredibly well developed and written characters. Which, frankly, is exactly what I expected from this author and why I keep comping back for more. Jozef and Shaun have taken over my mind and imagination.

I was hooked by the first page and. Could. Not. Put. This. Book. Down. And I can’t stop thinking about it. The way this author built this story, adding and adding more is spellbinding.

And that ending!!! I cannot wait for February- so worth it! Highly recommend - a true 5-star read.

Sin of Silence is a complex and well written story that grabbed me from the very start.
Jozef is a complex mafia enforcer and ends up abducting Dr. Shaun as she is able to communicate with sign language. This is an unlikely pair as he takes lives and she has vowed to save lives, but the author is able to create an amazing story with a shocking cliffhanger. I can’t wait to see what comes next in February.

Sins Of Silence- This story focuses on the development of characters not usually at the forefront. The characters are written incredibly well & come off strong representing the story well.
This story follows a very ethical Dr Shaun who falls in the hands of a very skewed Mob enforcer Jozef. The power play and dynamics of two individuals that find themselves drawn together but from two very different worlds. Although steamy at times, this book wasn’t over the top and It shows the development of their relationship more so. Be warned this story leaves off on a pretty heavy cliffhanger which is hard for someone like me who likes to power through a series BUT the sequels due in February. The next book will be anxiously awaited, meaning the authors done her job hooking us in to continue the journey of Shaun & Jozef. Read it, you won’t be sorry 🙂

I really enjoyed this story. It’s dark, it’s gripping, it has one hot as hell anti hero. This book was action packed. Shaun was no pushover. I love it when the h has a backbone. She does not let Jozef walk all over her. Jozef is non verbal, and uses sign language to communicate. It’s was nice to see a story that flowed flawlessly in that aspect. The story does end on a cliffhanger. I can’t wait to dive into the next one!
