Anders Roslund is a Swedish author and journalist. He is the founder and former head of Kulturnyheterna (Culture News) on SVT, Sweden's national television broadcaster. For many years he worked as a news reporter – specializing in criminal and social issues – and as an Editor-in-chief at Rapport and Aktuellt, the two major News programmes on SVT.
Roslund regularly collaborates with Börge Hellström, and together they make up the writing duo of Roslund & Hellström.
Detective Superintendent Ewart Grens six months from retirement is alerted by colleague Mariana Hermansson of a break in with nothing apparently taken from the same address of the worst crime scene he has ever seen for which he never secures a conviction. Seventeen years ago Zana Lilaj survives the brutal slaughter of her family. Meanwhile, former under cover operator Piet Hoffman receives some shocking threats which demands he takes certain action or his beloved wife and family will pay the ultimate price. The story is principally told by Grens and Hoffman who work together to solve what appears dangerously insoluble.
Well, that’s how you grab a readers attention and hold them in a vice like grip until the very end! This novel is impossible to put down, your eyes are glued to the pages, perched on the edge of your seat, as you just want to solve this huge puzzle. The danger, the huge danger that especially Hoffman faces as the world he has built nearly explodes, is breathtaking. The storyline takes us from Sweden to Albania and it seems as if all roads in the fast paced plot lead to Albania and across the border into neighbouring Montenegro. This is extremely well written, it’s action packed from start to finish as you get a ringside seat in a dramatic race against time, against perpetrators who are always one step ahead and who seem to have metaphorically tied their hands behind their back and shackled them at the same time. The characters are good, Grens is very complex, taciturn, trusts few but is excellent at his job. Hoffman is brave, inventive and creative and could have a starring role in Line off Duty daringly unmasking the villains and staying well below the radar. Their two storylines flow well and the complex plot connects cleverly. You get shock after shock, several are real jaw thunking to the deck kind and the tension is so taut a high wire act could cross it and as if that isn’t enough the author adds more layers so be prepared for palpitations! I had semi worked one thing out but still didn’t see that ending coming and I like that it doesn’t neatly tie in a bow as that would have been a travesty. Brilliant.
If you like your thrillers full of pace, with multiple bends and twists in the plot road, if you want action, suspense and tension so thick you could cut it then look no further than this very high quality Swedish jet black noir. The translation is outstanding too.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Random House UK, Vintage, Harvill Secker for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Una dintre cartile mele preferate citite in acest concediu.
Late to the party with the latest instalment to this series so just a shortie review. Finally got around to catching up with Grens & Sundkvist & really enjoyed it. It's a bit slower in spots that typical American fare but it's then you get to know your characters. It has a creepy, intricate plot with a fantastic twist at about the 80% mark that may dislocate your little jaw. It reminded me why I've enjoyed this series in the past & I'm determined to keep up ! 🤨
Although this is the ninth book in a series of which I’ve only read one earlier book, I didn’t find this a hindrance, as any relevant back story was revealed in the opening chapters. Criminal Inspector Ewert Grens is attempting to locate a 22 year old woman called Zana. Seventeen years before, Zana’s entire family was brutally murdered, leaving her as the only witness. Now her old home has been broken into and Grens fears for Zana’s safety. Meanwhile, the author’s other protagonist, security expert Piet Hoffman and his family are in danger from weapon smugglers. He suspects this is because secret information has been leaked from the police department and requests Grens’s help in locating the mole. As the story progresses, the two cases become intertwined. This is hardly a typical introspective Scandinavian novel but a fast-paced thriller, somewhat in the style of Simon Kernick with the action shifting from Sweden to Albania and back again. And there’s certainly plenty of action. I particularly liked the relationship between the two central characters. Once, apparently, deadly enemies, then reluctant allies. Now, if it’s not exactly friendship, it’s certainly one of strong mutual trust.
4.5 stars. An unsolved case still troubles Detective Inspector Ewert Grens, when he finds five-year old Zana home alone with the corpses of her father, mother, brother and sister. She is the sole survivor of an execution: why? When a bunch of thugs are murdered in the same style and the apartment is robbed, Ewert begins an investigation with his two partners and two cadets. Meanwhile, Piet Hoffman's family, with whom Ewert has grown attached, is threatened to get Piet to start a gang war using a military-style weapon. Somehow, secret police files have been obtained, and there is obviously a mole in the department, causing enormous stress on the investigating team. Trust no one. As Ewert tries to locate Zana, who went into witness protection with a new identity, but bolted from her adopted parents at 16, when she began to remember her past, placing her in mortal danger. Good plot, with mysteries galore, and the age old literary question of what is justice.
P.S. Why hasn't Book 4 in this series been translated into English?
This started really well, it piqued my interest from the very first chapters but then too many characters were involved and too many things happened so I got lost. I didn't have much time to read it but it wasn't like I couldn't wait to finish it either. I skim-read the last few chapters, though, and I have to say that the twist was really good and unexpected.
I think that the timing wasn't right so don't take this rating too seriously. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. 2 ⭐
KNOCK KNOCK would be noteworthy solely for the fact that it is Anders Roslund’s debut novel. Actually that is not quite accurate, as aficionados of Scandinavian crime fiction will quickly point out. Roslund previously wrote several books with the now-deceased Börge Hellström and a two-volume semi-autobiographical series with Swedish screenwriter Stefan Thunberg under the pen name Anton Svensson. KNOCK KNOCK continues the Roslund/Hellström series featuring Stockholm Criminal Inspector Ewert Grens and former police informant turned security expert Piet Hoffman. I am happy to say that it meets and exceeds the expectations created by its predecessors.
It should be noted immediately that one does not need to have read the previous installments in the series to appreciate this latest entry. Roslund, with an excellent assist from translator Elizabeth Clark Wessel, gives newcomers a recap of what has gone before as needed. Therefore, it is fitting that the book begins with a flashback to one of Ewert’s cases from approximately 15 years ago, when an apparent home invasion resulted in the execution of four members of a family. The lone survivor was a five-year-old girl named Zana Lilaj. Ewert was the responding inspector to the call and took the suddenly orphaned child under his wing, ensuring that she was placed in foster care under witness protection.
The troubled, taciturn and brilliant Ewert is now at loose ends; he is six months away from his mandatory retirement and is wondering what to do next. The present meets the past when he is summoned to a crime scene where a body is found bearing the signature wounds of those on the Lilaj family members. When two more people who have been executed in a similar fashion are found, Ewert is fearful that Zana’s life is in danger.
Meanwhile, Piet has been freed from prison and is running a successful personal security firm. His life is upended when an unknown person threatens to expose his past as a police informant to an illegal arms dealer who had been imprisoned because of Piet’s undercover work. The blackmailer has documents that were thought to be held under the tightest possible security by Ewert’s boss. Piet is now forced to revisit his old life and act as an intermediary in the sale of a large cache of weapons that technically don’t even exist. The penalty for failure will be the murder of his family.
A desperate Piet turns to Ewert, with whom he has had an extremely complicated and occasionally antagonistic relationship. However, it is clear that there is a traitor in Ewert’s department. The irony here is that both Ewert and Piet, who have trouble trusting anyone, must trust each other as their respective difficulties slowly converge. The story moves from Stockholm to Albania and back again, careening toward a conclusion that is by turns satisfying, tragic and unforgettable.
KNOCK KNOCK is shot through with images and scenes that are impossible to forget and are intertwined with a number of suspenseful vignettes. Anders Roslund is a household name throughout most of the world as a master of crime fiction, and this book is a sterling example of why.
UAU! Arrepiante e trepidante.
Knock Knock is an exciting story in which a police inspector and a former police informant are in a race against time to try to save the life of the only remaining witness to a crime from the past. Five candles on the cake. Joy. Impatience. The anticipation. Zana could not have imagined that the destinies of many people would be erased that day. Hers, too. She just wanted to sing Happy Birthday with everyone, yet her fate irrevocably changed that day as did those of family and friends closest to her. Crime Inspector Evert Grens was summoned to take part in an investigation in a Stockholm apartment. One family, seemingly randomly selected, was brutally killed. Only a five-year-old girl who was placed in a witness protection program survived. Seventeen years later, except for Inspector Grens, everyone has forgotten about the case. However, when he is informed that someone broke into the apartment where the massacre once took place, he will immediately suspect that someone has returned to clean up and cover their tracks, to find and remove the only surviving witness.
Grens' search for Zanzibar will intersect with the investigation of Pete Hoffman, a former police informant whose family is threatened by Hoffman's former employers from the underworld. Together they have seventy-two hours to solve cases and save innocent lives. This is a compulsive and exciting part thriller part police procedural from an award-winning crime writer at the peak of his powers. He writes with gritty realism, something I love when it comes to European crime fiction, and this Sweden-set tale keeps you on your toes throughout as the unlikely investigative pair race to save innocent lives. It's a terrifying yet believable story about betrayal and revenge, which brings together Ewert Grens and Piet Hoffmann - two of Anders Roslund's iconic characters - in an alert, scintillating and tense action novel. In three days, secrets kept sacred for two decades come to light, and finally, the curtain falls, revealing the most unexpected perpetrator in an explosive final twist. Highly recommended.
➕ inteligența copiilor, simnțul de a-şi recunoaşte părinţii chiar şi atunci când aceştia au altă înfățişare; ➕ imaginea negativă creată Suediei; ➕ modul perfect de a prezenta personajele, cu trecutul si viata lor; ➕ Piet Hoffman personajul meu preferat;
➖am văzut pe GoodReads că această carte este a-9 dintr-o serie🤭nu am idee cât se leagă între ele, dar sigur un fir e acolo; ➖către final multitudinea de nume şi locații m-a făcut să pot urmării mai greu acțiunea;

I so want to give spoilers but Anders Roslund has used Ewert Grens and Piet Hoffmann to bring to a some what ending to a hunt for the killers of Zana's parents and siblings. It all starts with the murders of three men who were the subjects of an investigation of Zana's family, only 20 or so years later. Everything was set up to get Piet Hoffmann to kill whoever he wanted to wipe out. But Piet set himself up to resist what he didn't want to do. Anders uses this to make everything take place in Sweden but also uses Albania as where the guns come from and also goes there to test Piet. Anders uses many scenarios to get your blood pumping and you do get it pumping.
