De verhalendief
Olivia beleeft haar avonturen altijd in boeken. Maar als alle boeken van de stad door de Verhalendief gestolen zijn, besluit ze dat ze net zo’n dappere heldin moet worden als die waarover ze vaak leest. Ondertussen weet de dief niet goed wat hij met die gestolen verhalen aan moet. Het is Olivia’s taak om de misdaad op te lossen, en de dief te leren hoe leuk het lezen en delen van verhalen is!

Olive was on her way back from the library when she dropped her book over the side of the boat she was travelling in.
Down at the bottom of the sea, an Octopus found the book and wondered what it was. He followed Olive and noticed how happy books made her. In fact, he notice how happy the books made all the town folk.
So Octopus decided he had to have all the books and that’s how the story thief came to life. But what will Olive and the town folk do now without any books for them to read?
The Story Thief is a sweet book that shows children how magical books and reading are and how they help them to use their imaginations.
I loved how brave Olive was and how much she adored reading and used all the knowledge she had gained from reading to help her locate and retrieve the books that the Octopus had stolen.
The illustrations are amazing and bring the story to life. A fabulous story and one I can see children adoring the whole way through.

Een superleuk boek dat ik echt heerlijk vond om te lezen. Een klein meisje, een enorme boekenworm, verliest een boek als ze met de boot naar de bieb gaat en dat komt terecht bij een grote octopus/zeemonster. Die is, natuurlijk, helemaal geinteresseerd in het boek (al weet hij niet wat het is natuurlijk). Ik moest enorm lachen om wat de octopus zijn plannen zijn en ik vond het nog leuker om hem te zien puzzelen met boeken. Van ze likken tot meubels maken tot andere mooie dingen.
En ik vond het nog leuker dat het kleine meisje op echt avontuur gaat. Niet in een boek. Nee echt. Iemand moet die boeken terughalen en zij gaat dat doen. Zo heerlijk.
Het einde en hoe alles opgelost wordt was fantastisch en ik zat met een grote glimlach te lezen. Ik wil nu ook even het boek in hoor.
De illustraties waren gewoonweg prachtig. Wat heb ik van ze genoten.

Ce bel album jeunesse aux illustrations très colorées et très détaillées prend pour thème central l'importance du Livre. C'est un de mes incontournables pour avril 2021 en librairie.
Olivia adore les livres, qui ont le pouvoir de la faire voyager et de lui faire vivre pleins d'émotions. Alors qu'elle en apportait justement quelques uns sur la chaloupe de son père pêcheur, l'un d'eux sombre dans la mer et se dépose devant une sympathique créature marine: un poulpe jaune géant! J'ai dit "sympathique"? C'est que ce gros mollusque est fort intrigué par ce livre et décide d'aller voir la petite fille qui l'a perdu. En la voyant dans son lit, réagir à l'histoire que lui raconte son père, le poulpe se dit que ces objets en papier ont un pouvoir intrigant dont il veut aussi bénéficier! Fort de sa propre logique, le mollusque géant vole alors tous les livres des environs. Ça c'est moins sympathique. Olivia part à la recherche du voleur, jusque dans sa grotte et découvre la créature marine, qui a tenté tant bien que mal de se "servir" des livres, sans succès. Elle décide alors d'ouvrir le livre qu'elle a elle-même perdu et commence sa narration. Emporté dans un tourbillon de mondes tous plus fabuleux les uns que les autres, le poulpe est séduit. Si bien qu'il rapatrie les ouvrages volés grâce à un immense navire fait des ces mêmes livres volés , apprend à lire et monte une bibliothèque sur bateau avec Olivia et devient rien de moins qu'un des plus illustres conteur de la région.
Une histoire remplie d'aventure et de livres dans un décor insulaire et sous-marin riche en couleurs, qui célèbre le pouvoir des livres, que ce soit pour leur capacité de réunir les gens, de voyager très loin sans bouger, de cultiver son imaginaire et de stimuler la créativité. Lire est également un privilège, qui ne s'acquiert que par l'entremise de l'apprentissage de la lecture, autrement il faut se faire raconter. J'aime que les deux aspects de la chose soient abordés.
J'adore le fait que la lecture ait fait sortir le poulpe de sa grotte pour s'ouvrir non seulement au monde, mais aussi aux gens.
Et j'apprécie l'apparence d'Olivia, assez loin des archétypes féminins standards et encore plus loin des stéréotypes féminins. le poulpe ( ou est-ce un calmar?) est fort mignon avec sa couleur solaire et ses petits yeux ronds. le fait qu'il se déplace dans la ville sur les toits m'a bien fait rigoler.
Et j'aime cette ambiance "Vingt milles lieux sous les mers", qui est d'ailleurs assez bien imagé avec la couverture. Les romans de Jules Vernes, par ailleurs, auront séduits un nombre appréciables de jeunes lecteurs, le parallèle est à faire!
Un livre pour lequel la plus grande des magie est celle des livres et de l'amitié.

Oh wat moet dat geweldig tof zijn: je eigen verhaal schrijven én illustreren. In die mate dat tekst en beeld elkaar verheffen en mooier maken. Carter is een held. Niet in het minst omdat zijn verhaal over een heldhaftig klein meisje gaat en boeken, veel boeken. Veel beter wordt het niet!
Samsara heeft echt haar best gedaan voor dit boek, de afwerking is prachtig; met oog voor detail (de streepjescode!) en een super uitnodigende cover.
Het verhaal van Olivia en de ‘Verhalendief’ is spannend, avontuurlijk, prachtig geïllustreerd en met een goede afloop. Niet onbelangrijk bij verhalen die je voor het slapengaan (voor)leest. Jong en oud gaan hun hart ophalen aan dit verhaal. Als je nog geen boekenverslinder bent wordt je het door Olivia en de Boekboot vast en zeker! Misschien nog een ideetje voor alle havensteden? Welke burgemeester waagt zich hier als eerste aan?

Wanneer Olivia met haar vader in een boot onderweg is naar de bibliotheek in Kraaijenbaai valt 1 van haar boeken overboord. Het verdwijnt in de diepte, waar het gevonden wordt door een bijzonder wezen. Nieuwsgierig probeert het te ontdekken waar het boek voor dient. Daarom volgt het wezen het spoor van Olivia naar de stad, overal waar het komt ziet het hoe mensen en dieren genieten van de verhalen uit boeken. Hij moet en zal die wonderlijke dingen hebben en steelt alle boeken die hij tegenkomt. Zo verdwijnen langzaam alle boeken uit de stad. Olivia laat het er niet bij zitten en gaat op onderzoek uit...
Een warm en kleurrijk prentenboek over de kracht en de waarde van boeken en verhalen. Leuk om te gebruiken bij een kringgesprek over lezen, verhalen en boeken. Natuurlijk uitermate geschikt voor thema's waarin boeken centraal staan.

Fantastic illustrations and a great story, perfect for bookworms, as someone or something is sneaking around and stealing all the books (and not even the finished ones!). Scandalous behaviour is going on and Olive is determined to get to the bottom of it!
There's lots of mystery in this little tale and the illustrations are hugely imaginative and spread across the page which was great - totally engaging and eye catching. Not one to be missed, especially if you are a bookworm parent reading to your baby bookworm too.

Een wonderlijk, origineel verhaal over de magie van boeken.
Prachtige illustraties en kleurengebruik!
Leuk om te zien hoe de verhalendief experimenteert met boeken om erachter te komen waarom iedereen er zo gelukkig van wordt.
Als kind had ik mij helemaal kunnen verplaatsen in Olivia die dolgelukkig wordt van boeken. En zo leuk dat zij als enige het avontuur durft aangaan!
Het allerleukste is toch wel het einde :)

It's an incredible littel childrensbook , with amazibg pictures and a very fun story. Olivia loves books and happens to drop one in to the sea ,where an octopuss finds it and wom´nder: What's this! Can I have it on my head or...

I love a story about the love of reading and the treasures that any book can hold and this story is so clever in showing everyone that an understanding of joy of reading knows no bounds. It teaches, it allows an escape and it provides the opportunity to be part of a community through sharing. Another favourite.

This is a family firm favourite!

Leuk prentenboek! Altijd leuk als een prentenboek specifiek over de kracht van verhalen en boeken gaat. Illustraties zijn grappig, niet helemaal mijn stijl maar voor het voorleesaspect en de verbeelding (vertellen en laten zien) werkt het goed.

Blatant prejudice against illiterate cephalopods. They are not all miserable thieves.
Happily, however, an outreach program convinces the townspeople not to press charges and, after being rehabilitated, the Octopus becomes a useful member of society.
