I am a fantasy author living in Scotland, United Kingdom and spending my days juggling the demands of an elderly, spoiled cat, two giant dogs and a host of fictional characters.

As far as the cat is concerned, she’s in charge and should always come first. The older dog’s favourite method of getting my attention is a gentle nudge with his head. At least, he would say it’s gentle. And the younger dog's attention-getting method generally involves playing with the loudest squeaky toy he can find.

This story very much goes along the same lines as all the previous installments, so I don’t think I can give an informative review without including the series, as a whole. Each storyline is an interesting mystery that has to be solved, this one is no exception. They take the reader through all kinds of twists and turns with moments of action mingled in. I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one!

The characters are also super interesting. Yvonne, especially, is a very intriguing gal - as is Guise (the MMC). However, that is also where my hesitation comes in. While the characters are interesting, they don’t grow at all throughout the series. There is no digging deeper to understand their motivations, no enlightening moments where we understand the why of their actions. Yvonne is a bit of an exception because we do get the basics for her motivations but even then it is only surface. The biggest frustration for me, though, was with Guise. He is such an anomaly as a main character. This is intriguing at first, but as the books continue and nothing more comes to light, it becomes frustrating and eventually infuriating. WHY is he the way he is? WHY has he loved Yvonne for so long? WHAT has molded him into the man he is? We never know. This is also true of every single other character, as well.

So… I leave this series having enjoyed tremendously the richly told stories. But I also leave frustrated and disappointed because the characters I grew to love were exactly the same in book six as in the first. And I still understand them no more than I did at the beginning.

REVIEW

The series reads in continuation, so has to be reviewed in entirety. Most of the plot carries over and a lot of sub-plots find resolution in this conclusive book.

Liked it. Found it to be engaging. The characters are focal points of the books. The plot is good but wouldn't live without the same characters to carry it through.

It is written well and in a picturesque style where adventure takes the tone of the book. No outstanding lines, however. There is also no explosion of adrenaline. Though some scenes are emotionally charged, and things do find resolution in a fantastical stuff-of-legends way, but it is not written dramatically with high tones of flair and pomp. And I quite enjoy the latter.

The romance in the books is slow-slow-burn, but MMC is always present with the FMC. There are no smut elements full of heat, more 'let's-make-love'.

I do recommend reading it for the fantasy it is. Even after a few days of completing the books, I kind of miss the small family Yvonne has made, and the home she has earned. This is definitely a re-read worthy series!

3.5/5; 4 stars.
A satisfying ending to the series. It didn’t blow me away but it was a good story and wrapped up a lot of threads.
I have enjoyed binging on this new-to-me-author for the last couple of weeks and definitely recommend her to my GR friends who like a good fantasy story that you don’t have to invest years of your life in.

4.5 stars for the storyline 😍
No comments about the romance! 😬

This series is excellent!
With strong heroine who had a tragic past and a hero who devoted to her.
The story is pulled me in and I couldn’t stop reading, until I have too!

However, the romance is still very thin, there’s a HEA for Yvonne and Guise.
But I still feel unfinished and why they just easily say yes to the potion Guise’s mum givens to him?
And why she wanted her son to have it?
Why no discussion about it yet? And the door still closed! 🙄.

Oh well, I don’t read this series for the romance part, and I satisfied with the story as a whole.
However, still a bit upsetting when so much potential could happen for this two 😐.

So I recommend this series if you want a fantastic storyline with the romance as a side dish only! 😜😂

❤️❤️❤️

(no original review - reviewed in March 2025 re-read)

This series is definitely a favorite. The cast is, across the board, fabulous. The worldbuilding is complicated and layered, creating such a rich world that is a joy to explore. And where this book lands everything is lovely - the Hundred making changes that will, beyond the end of the books, bring much-needed joy and stability to their lives.

This is a clean romance that has a slow build due to past trauma involving the FMC (we get teeny flashbacks of it throughout the series, as something happens that triggers a reminder, but nothing too dark or heavy imo), but I really enjoyed it. I feel like Guise and Yvonne landed somewhere so strong and lovely, the kind of supportive partnership of equals that everyone should have.

I'll definitely read this series again and again.

Read the series for the adventure rather than a well-rounded character history and development. Lots of little details were never explained even at the conclusion of the series, but I enjoyed the few journeys we followed in these 6 books and the HFN for our main couple.

This was a great series, it’s easy, quick reading with interesting characters and lots of action. This is the second series I’ve read by Vanessa Nelson and found both were great reads.

I absolutely LOVED this series, which is becoming the norm for me for Vanessa Nelson’s work. The characters, the world-building, the stories were all just so well-crafted and left me unable to not immediately dive into each book. The only thing I am immensely disappointed about is that I have not yet found my own Guise. Humph. FANTASTIC series, loved all of it.

I am so deeply attached to these characters, and so devastated that the series is over, but I'm content with the ending. It was lovely. I'll just be casually crying for the next few days... or weeks. Don't txt 😭

Seriously though I absolutely adored this series. The clean, slow burn romance was amazing, all of the characters were so realistic and loveable (or hateable), the plots were all fast paced with super high stakes, the magic system was so fascinating, and the writing style was a near perfect balance of description and action. Did I mention how amazing the characters were?? Because seriously. They're all so well designed, so well executed, and so well developed. I don't normally like when books have this many characters involved bc it just gets hard to follow and I end up only caring about one or two characters, but that was not the case here!! Don't get me wrong, Yvonne was my favorite for sure, and her and Guise together makes me giddy, but I could honestly read an entire series about practically all of the other characters in this and still be 100% as invested. I just loved everyone. I'm absolutely going to have to grieve finishing this series and saying goodbye to this world. Major kudos to the author for a job well done.

This is a review for all 6 books in the series as I read them pretty much in one sitting. This was the first book I read of this author who is new to me. Let me now just say that Vanessa Nelson has become a favourite auto buy for me! This series blew me away, the characters and the interactions between people are what make a book for me, even more so than the plot. And these characters stayed with me long after I put the books down. I anticipate that this will be one of those rare series that I return to read again. The world building was delightful and intriguing, Yvonne was powerful, but not all consuming and she was humble and believable. She went through betrayals, set backs and triumphs and I lived through it all with her. Honestly these books were amazing, go read if you love any sort of fantasy (although I think these were pitched with an easy world to understand so you could be new to the genre), light romance (not the over riding story emphasis, but what there was was clean and delightful) and heartfelt characters.

Extraordinary ending to the series!!! 💖💖💖

Wow, I am blown away by this amazing series. Each of the six books brings on a new adventure filled with action, mystery, magic, many surprises and a slow burn romance. Yvonne the FMC is such a great and complex character. She is tough, fierce, smart, caring, vulnerable at times and with the biggest and most generous heart. Guide, the MMC is also everything you can wish for the MC to be. Powerful, mysterious, supportive, fierce and yet kind when needed. Such a unique, original story full of intrigue, that is extremely captivating and engaging. The secondary characters are also an integral part of the story and add that much more to it. I am in awe of how beautifully written the series is and cannot wait to read more books from this author. The series needs to be read in order as there is a progression to the story. Very highly recommended 🥰😍❤️

The hundred
Just been reading the series "The Hundred" by Vanessa Nelson.  A very good series that has kept my interest throughout the books I've read so far.  Since I am reading book 6 that should show my interest.  Started the series last week and have not been able to stray from the story line.  Yvonne and Guise are great characters and certainly do not leave doubt of their dedication to each other.  As we progress through the story we see that they are very compatible.   The sorcerers they encounter definitely puts them at risk.  The characters affiliated with them are awesome as well.  Brea & Thorn especially not to forget the other hunars.  I definitely recommend this series if you are interested in intrigue, sorcery, evil influences, etc etc.  This a great read.  Thank you Vanessa.  Will be reading more of your books for sure.

Walk In Darkness, See Great Light

Hunar6

Well. Another series comes to a close. I will miss Yvonne and Guise, and all their friends.

There was such darkness in this story. Not cruelty, but definitely malicious. People believing they could get power for nothing, with deception costing them everything - their lives and their humanity.

But some of the selfish lived beyond their careless choices, and when faced with the prospect of responsibility, leaned toward maturity.

And, Yvonne stopped hiding from her desires, her dreams. Yay! She had always thought her bluntness a failing, but, it cut through to the heart of what was needed, every time. It brought her before kings and rulers, let her see mastery and commend it, and encouraged those around her, to grow beyond what had been expected.

A force for change, a call to possibilities.

Brilliant!

Series End

But maybe the universe has room for expansion. One can only hope.

The series was excellent and I still believe it would be a success in hard back. Even though Ms Nelson is English and living and writing in Scotland, I found it amazing that there was only one term that required any thought to translate. That was "shoulder-barging". I finally worked it out.

Finding a new author with work that needs to be read is always a joy. My next step is to find and start that next series.

I recommend this book, and if you happened to see my name tagged to any other reviews in this series, you can guess I recommend this series. You're right.

I recommend the entire series.

loved this series

Book 6-to be read in order finishes the series, ‘The Hundred’. I recently discovered the author, Vanessa Nelson, a few months ago. This is the second series I have read from her. Both series were excellent-well paced and exciting. Involving strong and compassionate main characters and sprinkled with a touch of romance, it was a joy to read. I look forward to discovering more worlds from this author!

A Wondrous Tale

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series of books. There have been almost rollercoaster speed of ups and downs pulling you along throughout this land of Hunar magic and wonder and adventure with an unstoppable force of an unassuming but Amazonian heroine that keeps you cheering her on to find her perfect place of peace both within herself, the people she loves and her surroundings. Does she find it? Read these great stories and find out for yourself.

Goodbye is truly bittersweet

Vanessa Nelson has a wonderful gift, creating worlds and characters readers are sad to leave behind.

This series is complete in itself, with room for many branches and stories of the wonderful peoples and creatures you will meet long the way. A world easily imagined, colorful and unique, I hope to revisit in the future.

An enjoyable read

Another excellent book in this series from an author who is fast becoming one of my favourites. This series is a lot darker than her other ones but still entertaining and a good read. Loved the ending with the storyline finishing satisfactorily and on a positive note. Highly recommend.

Exciting stories

We had non-stop action and new Hunar skills to surprise us. I did not get Yvonne and Guiss at the Far East (?) Court with the star. The star had requested them both to attend, and it was not included. Nor was the baby rescue. I was looking forward to both Events. Still a great, adventurous story.

Fantastic and very entertaining

I loved this series, this is my second time reading it and just as fascinating as the first time. I have read all her series and each series was so interesting I couldn't put the books down until I had read all of them. I'm deeply disappointed there are no more of her books to read. Hope to see more of her books.

A fantastic conclusion to the series

The tasks keep coming and dark things are all around. Confusing dark things no less.

Deadly animals where they shouldn't be, destruction and death with no reasonable cause, and no clear patterns to any of it.

Bound by promises, Yvonne will keep. And Guise at her side

enjoyed the series

The fantasy world where the characters were engaging. The age old fight between good and evil had a distinctive division that forced direct battles. Battles including magic and traditional weapons blended together. The main character held strong to her convictions without faltering. I recommend this series.

Finishing The Rising left me with a bittersweet ache. I was so hoping to witness the spring festival, and many of my other questions went unanswered. Still, I understand that these stories aren’t about tying up every loose end, but about confronting the larger forces shaping this world.

I adore every character in this series. When Modig appeared at Yvonne’s doorstep, I felt giddy, almost able to smell his warm, spiced cooking. Saying goodbye to Grayling, Sephenamin, Jaalam, Ewan, Pieris, Mariah, Joel, Modig, Yvonne, Guise, and even Ulla feels like leaving behind a home. This world and its people will stay with me long after the final page ❤️.

Amazing end of a series

Enjoyed this series so much. Intrigue, character building, world building, never bored. The end answered all the questions but didn't feel like a wrap up that doesn't feel like real life. So good.

I won't rate this one as I skipped from chapter 8 to the end. I suppose 6 books was just too much for me. I was losing interest. But from what I did read, this one looks just as good as the rest of the series. For me I'd like a little more romance.

What can I say this story was well written with memorable characters with a mass of good evil entwined within a most beautiful storyline. A series not to be missed.
